FOFC 2003 Season Predictions

I was going to classify this as OT since it's about football. :D

How about a little pick'em action for the members of FOFC?

I will post the season's games, one week at a time. After that the members may pick a final score for one of the games that week. Only the first guess for a game will be taken so if two people pick scores for the Redskins-Cowboys, than the first one will be taken.

After each game has been picked I'll move to the next week. At the end we'll see how we think the season will end. I would hope to get serious picks in this and don't just say 49ers 95 Cowboys 0 because you're a 49ers fan.

I'll keep our predictions and update everyone when the season starts to see how we fared.

Okay, 1st week's games:

Jets 17 @ Redskins 21 - Syrinx (16-13 Redskins)
Cardinals 7 @ Lions 21 - TheLionKing
Ravens 10 @ Steelers 14 - Coffee Warlord
Broncos 17 @ Bengals 33 - RendeR
Texans 14 @ Dolphins 49 - DolphinFan1
Colts 27 @ Browns 21 - Alf
Jaguars 10 @ Panthers 17 - Radii
Vikings 38 @ Packers 17 - mckerney
Patriots 34 @ Bills 28 - BishopMVP
Chargers 42 @ Chiefs 45 - MIJB#19
Rams 24 @ Giants 21 - tucker342
Falcons 28 @ Cowboys 14 - JeeberD
Bears 24 @ 49ers 31 - Darkiller
Saints 24 @ Seahawks 10 - SplitPersonality1
Raiders 35 @ Titans 17 - CK#12
Buccaneers 24 @ Eagles 17 - Axxon

Not much interest in this thread, it seems. Maybe I should have added some straw man email with questions about the 2003 season to the start of the thread. Maybe I'll repost this at a political forum, they may talk football. :D

Back to the topic at hand: That had to be a tough call for you Jeeber. It should be interesting to see what our results are, if we can get through the season.

Darkiller 07-09-2003 05:08 PM

49ers 31 Bears 24

mrsimperless 07-09-2003 05:10 PM

I was going to propose something similar, but different. ;) I have always beena "fan" of sports gambling, and used to bet quite a bit in high school. Since I don't do it now but I miss the thrill, I was going to propose some sort of FOFC betting game for the football season. (Not using real money, of course.) Each person is given an "account" with, say $1000 or so, and they can bet on games each week. The winner is the person with the most money in their "account" at the end of the year. Would anyone be interested in playing?

mrsimperless 07-09-2003 05:11 PM

Dola.

Sorry for the threadjack, I should have posted this seperately. I like your idea as well.

Fritz 07-09-2003 05:11 PM

I think it is a tad early for a football pickem thread

EagleFan 07-09-2003 05:12 PM

I would be up to that as well. This idea was more just to see how close we came, as a whole, to the regular season and not a contest type of thing.

I like that idea mrsimperless. Count me in.

EagleFan 07-09-2003 05:17 PM

It would be a tad early for a contest, which this isn't, but what football fan has not already looked at the schedule and started to pencil in wins or losses for their team?

I actually do better with my picks at this time of the year than if I do them during the season, it takes all the worry about injuries and other crap (like how much has Randy Moss pissed off his team) out of the decision, just a pure gut response.

RendeR 07-09-2003 06:28 PM

Bengals 33 Broncos 17

With the game being Marvin's first game and being in Cincinnati, I think the intangibles for that game go the Bengals favor. That and it will be Plummer's first start as a Donkey. I was there the last time Denver played at Paul Brown. I sat next to a Broncos fan who was sure of a victory over the lowly Bungles and loudly voiced that opinion leading up to the game. A record breaking 278 Corey Dillon yards later, he wasn't quite so loud.

Very true, but, 33-17? I think the game will be very close. I'm just not convinced that the Bengals are going to be that much better this year. And don't forget it will be Palmer's first start as a Bengal....

Palmer's not starting this year. Kitna is. No great QB, but is familiar with the system and the receivers. He won't be asked to carry the team, that will be Dillon.

Don't be surprised to see a pretty drastic improvement. There certainly is room for it. I think we will see the team has more talent than thought.

As we find out how bad the attitude and work ethic really was around the team, the last 12 years are no surprise. For example, last year, off-season workouts usually attracted 4-6 people a session. (That is not an exaggeration) This year, the participation has been near 100%. Many of the team's woes the last few years can be attributed to conditioning. It would take half the season to work into game shape and by then, the losing had set in.

They will have a solid O-line, a very good running back, a star in the making at WR in Chad Johnson complemented by a talented young corps.

More importantly will be a revamped defense with anywhere from four to seven new starters.

I'm not predicting playoffs as there was much room to improve, but if you followed the team, you'd know the changes have been drastic and improvement is almost certain.

I think this team is probably good for six or seven wins with the tough schedule they play this season. I honestly believe one of those wins will be against the Broncos in week one. Although my prediction would be closer to 21-17.

Thanks to Scooper for the very well stated reasoning for my pick of 33-17 over the broncos. I was leaning to say 24-17, but then thought about Marvin's history with defenses,a dn decided that Denver would be driving for the tying score and give up an interception or fumble which we get cheap points from.

hence 33-17 Bengals =)

I hoenstly believe this team has playoff talent, but with this seasons schedule (Holy crap batman) I am just hoping for 8-8.

Good luck everyone!

You can dog the team, but there are plenty of hard core fans. With the last 12 years we had to endure, we are arguable one of the most loyal of all fan bases.

The Redskins have struggled in the season starts in the past seasons.
That and even though I don't want to follow the Vick "hype", I somehow have the feeling he will make the Falcons become amazingly good...

Um, sorry. I am a Bengals fan thru and thru, but you are living in a fantasy world if you think they will go in and spank the Broncos in week 1. I read your next post and you sound exactly like I do when I get really drunk at a college football game (this is about the same time that I "seriously" discuss the Missouri Tiger's chances of taking the big 12's BCS bid) I would love to see the Bengals win and go 19-0, but face the facts that this team in no big improvement over any of the shit we have put on the field in the past decade! Marvin Lewis is going to change things? You had better look again to explain the Raven's fluke super bowl win. They played for their head coach that day.

If you honestly think this team is no better than any in the last 10 years, then you haven't paid attention to anything thats gone on with them.

Granted, nothing has truly changed until they put wins on the board. i won't argue with that. but when I look at the personnel moves. The offense sitting in its third year of the sme system, their second with the same starting key players, and a defense with additions who will bolster the weaknesses we had a year ago. I can't help but think we will be much more competitive.

They have a shit schedule, so I'm not dreaming about a playoff birth.

In picking the Denver game I'm not seeing a blowout, or a spanking. I think it will be close, and as I stated later on, they'll get something opportunistic, a Marvin's teams always do.

Now as for the comment about the team playing for Billick, in teh super Bowl, i MIGHT believe that. but they were playing defense ALL year long, so Marvin's program, attitude and coaching ability had a shit ton more to do with that super bowl win than billick's pep talks.

Billick might be an offensive guru, but as an overall coach he's crap. look at that team since Marvin left. Crap. period. The Ravens should be folded and moved to LA to replace the Hams.

I don't recall predicting that they will "spank the broncos" but on that day, a Benga's team with arguably worse personnel than the one that will take the field this year, certainly spanked the Broncos. I think we see a weak one "W", but it will be close. I agree with Render, if you don't see the improvement thus far, you haven't been paying attention. Playoffs? No. Not yet, but definately improvement.

Come on, someone here has to care about one of those 2 teams! ;)

ummm.... I'd hate to be the Cardinals, 2 losses in the same week, ouch!

I think he 49er's are playing the Rams in week 2

If any team could pull that off this year, it would be the Cardinals.

EagleFan 07-15-2003 08:24 AM

Damn, too much baseball lately. I need to change that game to 49ers/Rams. I'll take the scoe down from that one and that will give us two open games. DK, you've got another shot at the Niners game.

Titans 20 - Colts 13

Damn, I just missed my chance to pick the Titans game.

Anyway, nice pick CK :)

OK, I am so out of it in regards to baseball, it didn't even occur to me that you might have been thinking St. Louis (Baseball) Cardinals [or perhaps even the old St. Louis (Football) Cardinals].

I was trying to figure out how the mistake was made. I was all over the fact that the Cardinals are now in the same division as the Rams and 49ers, but I still couldn’t quite figure out how you could mistake one division opponent for the other… Now it all makes sense!

Darkiller 07-15-2003 09:31 AM

This should be a battle but on a good day, the 49ers now have the complete team over the Rams.

49ers 28 Rams 21
