X-COM II: Roll Call
Whoop! Whoop!
Roll Call! Whoop! Whoop! Calling all agents! Get your lazy, beer-bloated butts out of the brothels and get back to base! You've got a week to get here and get in shape, or we send captured Sectoids armed with anal probes to hunt you down in your sleep. Your planet needs you, and time's a wasting! This Earth is heading for its final confrontation with the alien menace, and you're swilling beer and watching football? Sheesh! Let's go, go, go! How to report back in... Simple. Post some kind of message here to let me know you're still around and ready to sacrifice your life for the greater good. Also, if you'd like to sign up, feel free to post here as well. Welcome one, welcome all! All you need is a warm body with functioning appendages, and I'll add you to the list. Once we finish up roll call, I'll move the active agents who are AWOL to the US base and do write-ups for the missions out of Europe and Asia. We'll be using new agents to guard our other low-risk bases and gradually get them to the active bases as agents in Europe and Asia get killed. I have to take a closer look at what was going on with all the agent movement when we stopped the last time. Depending on how this roll call goes, I might be able to post a mission this weekend. There were a number of agents due for guard duty that never reported, so I might hold up and wait for the roll call to complete. That way I can replace the AWOL agents that I brought into the game just as we were stopping with agents that are reading the dynasty again. I'll keep everyone informed, and will let you know more once I take a closer look at things. We'll either have a mission this weekend or next, so the wait won't be much longer in either case. This is it, people. The final push. Do or die. Victory or oblivion. Mars or bust. Let's rock 'n roll! GO FOFC X-COM! X-COM II Roll Call (After Mission 77) Code:

|
I"m reporting for duty sir!
|
Just updated the list! Except for Northwood DK (see below), everyone above this post should be good to go. Good turnout so far! Our USA inactives (the first dozen or so names) are staying about the same, which should mean that we won't have to switch around so many people. With as many people as we've got in now, I think I can fix up the two missions that were done before with up-to-date names so that we can start up again tomorrow. Probably have our first mission up late Sunday night. I'll start a new thread for the restart.
Tick tick tick, the clock's a ticking. I don't want to tip off too much, but not all of you will survive the weekend. There's death in our near future. Northwood DK: Patman, is Northwood DK your new login? Or are you new? Thanks! |
Northwood is a Dane who's living in Norway. I'm pretty sure he's not Patman. :)
|
Hmmm. Will the veteran, mighty pilot-turned soldiers known as CWII rise into the ranks of command?
Will he simply add more missions and experience under his belt, as the Grizzled Fighter he is? Or will he join his father, owner of the infamous Coffee Warlord Award, to be used as spare body parts for the brave soldiers who survive? |
Are there any backups for the early parts of X-Com II?
|
I have some of the very early X-Com reports saved to my computer. Do you want me to try and send them to you?
|
Here's my backup of the old x-com threads:
http://m1.311.telia.com/~u31120783/x-com.zip I've been meaning to put these up on a website but never got around to it... |
Thanks

It is amazing to me how jazzed I am about this Dynastys' resurection. Xcom and MOO were the two classic strategy games that, in my mind, still define the genre. They are the Earl Weaver Baseball of their respective genres.
In any case I am looking forward to splattering some Aliens GB. :D |
Swaggs checking in.

Its sad that X-Com came out in 1993? and still is the defining game, not only in the alien genre of games, but turn based strategy as well. IMO X-Com is the greatest PC game of all time. I've never been as captivated by a game as I was after discovering the game in 1994 during summer break between sophmore and junior years of high school. Its a crime that this game has never recieved a sequel worthy of the X-Com name. As I touched on earlier in this thread, I couldn't be more excited about X-Com Collectors Edition arriving here on Tuesday or Wednesday. I've been discribing the game to my wife, who then pretends to be interested in what I'm saying. |

Is it too late to report in?
|
Japh: Not too late at all.
Everyone: I'll be updating the list sometime on Tuesday. Busy weekend. First mission will be this coming Sunday at the latest. I'll aim for every Sunday after that. |
Alf III reporting GB !
|
Revrew reporting for action, sir! And by the way, boss, those $&$^%&$ aliens have cost me my job, my family, my pickup, and my dog. I no longer have anything to lose. Out with the old, cowardly Revrew determined to stay alive to the end. Give me a gun, and I will either ram it down the throat of the alien commander or let them pry it from my cold, dead fingers.

Sublime II reporting!
Damn, haven't been here for a while, but glad i made it back for this! |
I got my copy today. Had to do some tweaks and download a program to slow down my CPU in order to get it to run on XP and a 1.7Ghz P4. But I'm in X-Com bliss right now.
|
Quote:
I'm curious, what program did you download to slow it down? If I could get X-COM to work on my new P4 it would make things so much easier. |
Hmm I am running X-Com on my Athlon 1800, and I don't have to slow it down. Of course then I am using win 98 SE too. Hmm you guys using the latest edition the Collectors edition GOLD?
|
Glen: I'm running the Collector's Edition, but it's not Gold. I didn't even know there was such a thing as the Gold version of the Collector's Edition, and no Google search shows any hits on it.
For the hell of it, I tried playing X-COM on the P4 2.4 MHz machine. It works, but the scrolling is uncontrollably fast, and the alien turns go by so fast that my eyes can't even register anything more than a brief screen flash. There is also a problem with edges of the screen getting cut off, but I might be able to figure out something with that if I mess with my monitor resolution. In short, the game plays too fast, and I'll need to slow it down if I want to try and play on this machine. Be much easier to do the dynasty than on my laptop though, so I may mess with this a bit more. |
GB - There's an app called CPUKiller that you can get. It works quite well. Little slider bar that allows you to crank down your CPU speed to whatever you want.
I'd been using it to play Pirates Gold awhile back. |
Crank down on the Coffee. :)
|
Coffee: Great! Thanks. I'll try that for the speed issue.
Ardent: I stay away from caffiene. I'm too hyper for it as it. Maybe NyQuill would help? I've still got the resolution issue though. The top, sides, and bottom of the game screen run off the edge of the monitor's display, so they get cut off. I can't see the outside inch or so of all the screens. Any clues on how to fix this? Is there some setting I can mess with. Changing the monitor resolution didn't help. |
These 2 links helped me out quite a bit. I had the graphics problem and had to disable some things on my card, and also had the speed issue's. I'm using "Turbo" to slow my CPU down, I run it at 32% and the game runs great for me. The only issue I've had since is a crash that happens at random when starting a mission, not too big of a problem, all I do is make sure I save before the mission.
http://www.dwcs.net/xcom3board/28.shtml For this one, scroll down to "Game runs too fast". http://www.xcomufo.com/x1faq.html |
I haven't gone through the 16 pages of this post...just wondering...any time frame for our start?
|
Coffee:Humm...
CPUKiller did diddly for me. Even set at a 98% slowdown, the combat scrolling and alien turns go by lightning fast. Didn't look like it changed much. Herd: Thanks. Off to try turbo, and to look up the graphics problem solution. Ardent: This Sunday should see the first mission up. I can definitely run the game. I'm just trying to see if I can run it on my new computer instead of my laptop. Usually, I play on the desktop while I write on the laptop. Would love to see if I can still do that. I also may go out and get another monitor for my old computer, as my son will be able to use that one anyway. Either way, we'll get going this weekend. |
Herd: That fixed one problem. I fixed the stretching by changing the vertical settings for the monitor. Bingo. One problem fixed.
Turbo didn't help with the speed though. Battlescape still runs too fast. I think both Turbo and CPUKiller don't slow the newer computers down enough. Mo'Slo 4Biz looks like the best bet (they have a page devoted to getting the X-COM to run), but it's $25. Damn. Not sure I want to spend that just to get a utility. |
Hmm looks like I just imagined the gold part of the collector's edition. I really did think it was there though.
Strange about the scroll speed though, I don't have it installed right now, but I thought the scroll speed setting in the options menu took care of that for me. Geeze I hope I didn't imagine that too. There is also a great X-Com page that might help you out. http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~xcom/ There is a forum for that site as well where quite a few questions are answered. |
sorry being late but reporting for duty
|
It was still unplayable for me with the scroll speed set to 1 in-game. Turbo is working for me though. I have a 1.7Ghz P4 and 512MB.
|
AWOL no longer. reporting back for duty.
|
Reporting for duty!!
|
Craptacular is back from skiing. I'll return the rocket launchers to the armory shortly.
|
hey godzilla...my boy achilles reported in, yet you have him as awol...and i wouldnt get the turbo unless you plan on still playing this for a long time....what happened to that old slow down utility we used to use?
|
Ok, there we go. List is all updated! Yippee! Let me know if my secretary missed anyone's name.
The planets must be aligning, as we have had our best return turnout in years. Even stars from the early era of the dynasty--Shorty and Raven Hawk--have convinced their offspring to enlist in the grand struggle. All omens point to this being the final push. At some point in the next couple of days, I'll be putting up a new thread with a revised and up-to-date master list. Next, we'll jump right into action with our next mission, once I decipher my scribbly notes from the days right before my daughter was born. We are getting closer. It's time for war. |
Ah, haven't checked this thread in a little while.
GB, just to make sure I'm not missing the obvious here, have you gone into the settings section when you're in the battlescape and turned the speed sliders down? It *has* to be done on fast computers. I run X-Com on a 1.1 ghz, keep the sliders down a good ways, and it plays just fine. |
Great, soon I will be having fun at not knowing what I'm doing. That coupled with the walk on dynasty, HT and my 3 hour class. :)
|
Obviously, you're trying to get the Coffee Warlord Award. :)
Now, the question is, do you know the the CW Award IS? |
Quote:
No. But I do have four cans of diet Mountain Dew beside my monitor. Am I a shoe in? |
Doomed.
|
Quote:
Is that good? |
Coffee: Thanks for the reminder, but yup, I've been turning them all the way down when I check things.
Ardent: Don't worry. All you pretty much have to do is read along. If you want to make in character comments, feel free. Every once in a while, I may ask for volunteers. Volunteers often die, so plan accordingly. Sometimes I get confused and ask for advice. Actually, let me rephrase that. I often get confused and occasionally ask for advice when this happens. Feel free to chime in. Most of all, enjoy. You've got a chance to get a feel for things at first, because you'll most likely be stationed at some dump of an inactive base until there are, um, "empty bunks" at the more active bases. |
Quote:
Just like always. Sign up to save the world and get stationed in Iceland. :) Looking forward to it. |
Er, no, I think Iceland is pretty active compared to where you are going to start out. More like "sign up to save the world and get stationed in Tierra Del Fuego or McMurdo Sound".

Oooo! Ooo! You missed my name! I'm here! I'm here!
Oh yeah, and here's one obligatory sentence without an exclaimation point at the end. :) |
