Winning the Central Division: an OOTP5-6 Dynasty
With the release of CBL Cardinals EXCELLENT roster file, I fired up ootp5 and decided to see what I could do with the Cardinals in 2004 and beyond. Chicago and Houston are preseason favorites and most sportswriters have the Cardinals finishing third.
This is the first time in a long time I actually feel "challenged" starting with the Cardinals. It'll be quite fun to see how I compete in the Central Division. I'm playing manage mode, normal difficulty setting. I don't have any house rules and I have trading set to hard and favor prospects. Maximum team cash is set to $50,000,000, no salary cap, and reduced ratings. I also have coaches and scouts set to "off" (players still improve, but every team is on an "even" keel). In no way do I plan on a dynasty like Chief Rum or Skydog, I'm managing every game, so it will go slow and unless someone wants to see something specific, this dynasty will be pretty basic. (Sorry, I don't know how people like Marmel, SD, CR, AE, JonInMiddleGA, and many others create so immersive dynasties) :) Note: If I win the Central, I'm not sure if I'll end it there or keep going. I thought about keeping it a 'replay' only one year career, but I wanted to keep my options open just in case. Trading was a hard option to keep on, for the simple fact I'm trying to reproduce this year, but it's probably more accurate this way. In baseball, it's impossible to know who will go where during the season. At least I started out with accurate rosters. ;) I've played two games, so excuse me for the stats in my roster. |

![]() Home Opener: Game 1 We start the season with a four game home stand against the Milwaukee Brewers. Matt Morris will get the start against Ben Sheets. We need to come out and win against a team like the Brewers, who also happen to have the lowest payroll in baseball.
WP Matt Morris (1-0) LP Ben Sheets (0-1) SV Jason Isringhausen (1) BATTING Doubles: K. Ginter (1, 7th inning off Morris, 1 on, 0 out.) Homeruns: B. Hall (1, 4th inning off Morris, 0 on, 0 out.) Scott Rolen hit the longest homer of his career, it went 436 feet. Nice win. Morris showed the fans he's ready for 2004 and Pujols went 3-3 with 2 doubles. I expect more of the same with Woody Williams on the mound. |

Brady Clark hit the longest homer of his career, it went 429 feet. The bats were silent and SP Luis Martinez pitched a jem as he allowed only 4 hits in 8 innings of work. I would have liked that win, but I'll take a 3-1 start to the season. Time to pack our bags and head to Arizona to take on the undefeated (3-0) Diamondbacks. Next up, a three game series in Arizona. My first concern, the bottom of my rotation is weak and although I'll give Marquis and Carpenter more starts, it might be a good idea to see what I have at AAA in terms of SP or maybe a FA. It will be nice to see Matty Mo back at the helm vs Arizona's 5th starter. Next game vs Arizona Probable starters: STL (3-2) M. Morris (1-0, 2.25) ARI (4-0) E. Gonzalez (0-0, 0.00) |

Taguchi wasn't doing it for me where I needed him. I need more pop and hopefully Lankford will be the guy I'm looking for. He was tearing it up in AAA, hitting 0.358 with 5 homeruns and 10 runs batted in. At least he'll get a shot, what he does with it remains to be seen. I get rid of C Chris Widger and add FA Henry Blanco who is an upgrade at defense. I also add 1B Brian Buchanan who has some pop and release 1B Steve Cox. ** Breaking News **
Zeile is about at the end of his career, I would suspect someone will pick him up when an injury happens. |

Man, the Cubs suck! The Oklahoma Redhawks suck! This is the worst dynasty I've ever read! ;)

That's the way it's supposed to be, isn't it? ;) The Cubs pitching is starting to come around, it's early. I have the Phillies next and then the Cubbies. Should be a good series. Todd |
Good stuff. I'm reading while doing my own in MVP. I really like that game I am having a hard time figuring out why people are hating so much on it. As for simulation it doesn't come close to OOTP but I like playing every once in a while.
Anyways, good stuff. I just lost Jason Marquis for the season so I need Carpenter to step it up big time for me (and in real life!). Keep it up. |
So what do you think of the real life Lankford or Robinson left field situation?
|
Quote:
I like MVP as well. Ardent and I had a good time playing a game against eachother. :) That stinks losing Marquis, who's filling his role for you? I guess I'll just have to read your next update! Todd |
Quote:
I used to be a big Lankford fan, so I hope he has something left in his tank. I really like the possibility of Robinson becoming a true leadoff hitter, whether or not that happens is up to him. The acqusition of Womack intrugues me, I know he's getting up there in age, but I'm hoping he gets back to his old form. Remember when he used to eat us up on the basepaths? Should be an interesting season, I do know.. or I've heard, the Cardinals are still looking for an everyday LF - so who knows what Walt is up to? Todd |
Not much, in the case that the trade was for an injured midfielder. :)

Quote:
Butler was rated terrible and his stats showed it. He was just taking up space. :) Todd |
Zeile won't be a space taker?
|
Quote:
Maybe, but he's a bench warmer with an occasional start for Rolen -or- if he's really bad, I'll cut him. ;) Todd |

If I continue into next year, I'm definitly thinking about rebuilding. I don't have much trade if I need someone down the stretch, which hurts. Hopefully I'll stay relativley injury free. I could see me moving a few veteran players next year. ;) Todd |
