The "What my desktop looks like" thread

I just cleaned mine up. It's pretty boring. What does yours look like? If you know how you probably should "Save for Web" or reduce the image quality to zero so as to pity those using dial-up.

Hurst2112 04-07-2004 08:55 PM

The f-ing mars volta!!! Right on!

I heard so much about these guys and never game them a chance because of who liked them. I then read that they were the torch bearers of mainstream prog. That did it, had to get the album.

Best move I made on a review suggestion. Certainly in a niche by themselves but if you listen, there are touches of Rush throughout...along with yes and King Crimson.

Ksyrup 04-07-2004 09:03 PM

Also a hefty nod to Santana with some of the percussion-heavy sections. Great album, and one that I held off on getting, much to my detriment.

Easy Mac 04-07-2004 09:07 PM

I concur with Hurst!

They're what Rush would be if Rush were younger today. Its so werid to hear Sparta and the Mars Volta and then think they were in the same band. Both are the top in their own genres, but I got to love the crazy 10 minute solos on a CD.

JeeberD 04-07-2004 11:37 PM

My desktop is a bit of a mess right now...

sabotai 04-07-2004 11:38 PM

If that's a mess, mine's a disaster. :)

I have a LOT of icons on my screen.

There was an old thread on this. I can't remember who it was that had a desktop that was insanely full of crap all over. But he said he knew exactly where everything was.

I used a program called tsDesk. You can find it HERE. HERE is a great resource that will help you get started... It is really easy, and I have no training in this sort of thing. It keeps your desktop clean, and very accessible.

MJ4H 04-08-2004 12:09 PM

This is my desktop at work. My home desktop is nearly the same though.

Hurst2112 04-08-2004 12:13 PM

That looks like the side of a van from about 79-81. Classic. I was expecting to see a chick with big tits (not the one in SDs desktop...um yeah, that's disgustin') silhouetted on the foregroud, on the beach. At least it's good to know Saturn's moons have a climate similar to Orlando.

Just hit "Print Screen", then open up MS Paint and paste it. Then save the file as a ".jpg". Put it on the web somewhere. Then when you are posting here hit "Insert Image". Then just put the url of your picture.

It's hard for me to see on this tiny monitor here, but it looks like a black knight on a black horse, in this abstract-metallic sort of way.

Inspired by the tsDesk user earlier in the thread, I redid my desktop using this utility and thought you should see that someone that doesn't know much about html and css can do it, too.

Bosco 04-09-2004 10:57 AM

How did you get the weather script to work?

MJ4H 04-09-2004 11:06 AM

This is the code I have in my desktop.html file. change the 77777 to your zipcode like it says to do.

Code:

function getWeatherUpdate() {

//                alert("running weather update");

//              change 77777 to your zip code

                var urlSrc = "http://www.wunderground.com/auto/raw/77777";
                var objHttp = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP");
                objHttp.Open( "GET", urlSrc, false );
                objHttp.Send();

                //fixme: no error handling

                var rsp = objHttp.ResponseText.split("|");
                var i;
                for( i = 0; i < rsp.length - 1; i++ ) {
                        switch( i ) {
                                case 1:
                                        document.getElementById('weather_temp').innerHTML =  rsp[i] + " ºF";
                                        break;
                                case 4:
                                        document.getElementById('weather_humidity').innerHTML = rsp[i] + " humidity";
                                        break;
                                case 6:
                                        document.getElementById('weather_wind').innerHTML = "Winds " + rsp[i] + "mph";
                                        break;
                                case 8:
                                        //find a pic
                                        break;
                        }
                }

                //run this every X seconds
                var numSeconds = 60*5;        //wait 5 minutes inbetween updates
                var wId = setTimeout('getWeatherUpdate()', numSeconds*1000 );
}

I recently switched from Win2K to WinXP and had to change up the look to something a little less bright and straining on the eyes than the default.

That's the best way I can some up with doing it. Either that or find free web image hosting somewhere since attachments aren't allowed on the board (probably a good thing since that would kill bandwidth)
