Maybe J.K. Rowling can give books 6 and 7 more "adult" themes...
Recent photos of Emma Watson at the Harry Potter premiere....
![]() ![]() |
Did anyone see the recent SNL skit of all the Harry Potter characters reacting to a "grown up" Emma Watson?
|
Should I even ask how old she is?
as for the books, I haven't read them, just watched a movie or two, the themes don't seem to be THAT out of wack, what is it that disturbs you? |

She is 13 or 14. |
Ack, I wasn't trying to find out, I was asking IF I should ask, and now I see the answer is ....NO
I feel like a dirty old man now....thanks Ny ;) |
Anytime.

They're going to have to start shooting those movies in a hurry with these kids. They'll be aged out by the time they get to number seven (if they get to number seven). Then again, BH 90210 proved that you can have 30-somethings passably play teenagers....
|
They are already filming the next one. They do have a chance of getting them all done.
|
Quote:
Well Harry is supposed to be 18 by number 7, so even if they get a few years behind these kids still could most likely play them (a 22 year old playing 18 is not a stretch). I think many people don't realize that every book is a full year in school, so the kids do grow up in the book. |
Actually, I've read that while the original cast is under contract through the 4th movie (which has already started production), there's no guarantee that they'll be back for 5-7... what could screw it up is the fact that Rowling has slowed considerably when it comes to turning out the new books... no ETA on book 6 at all... and book 5 was released a year ago.
|
True, but while the book ages Harry & Co. a year at a time, the actors are aging about two years at a time. Granted, if they're running most of these productions consecutively, the age discrepancy will be minimal, but I'm reasonably sure the actors will be in their 20s by number 7 (which hasn't even been written yet, and neither has 6, so it could be even longer to get to those).

Will be interesting to see how many "silent" views this thread gets...
|
I believe this is the first movie that hasn't come out 1 year after the previous one. Probably has to do with changing directors.
A bigger problem I see is that the books grow increasingly thick along the series - the 5th book is at least twice as long as the first. The movies will have a hard time condensing them and retaining all the story elements. |
Is it me, or does it look like she's pointing to her nipple in the first photo? That's just creepy.
|
Dola (maybe),
That first photo of Emma is unfortunate - it makes her look like she's pinching her nipple... |

Now that you've mentioned it, it's kind of a turn-on. Who's got the kleenex? This thread is gonna look like the floor of an adult book store video booth by the end of the day... |
Sigh, no photos for me.
|
without sounding TOO perverted, I'd like to note that she appears to be growing into one seriously gorgious young woman, can't wait to see some films with her in them in about 5-10 years.

I am hoping her career takes a Dana Plato-esque arc. |
Quote:
Uhhh... why? As I recall, she died of a drug overdose. |
Even though they are only under contract until Book 4, I think they'd be crazy not to give the kids an extended contract. To switch actors midway through would be really wierd.
|
I imagine the 4 movie contract was done by the agents for the kids, so they could reup for the last 3 books at huge numbers.

she has man hands

Yeah, sure. You'd still hit it. |

Yeah, she croaked in '99. That was after she had knocked over a Las Vegas video store with a pellet gun and stole something like $160. Don't get me wrong... I wouldn't mind seeing Emma Watson do softcore for Skinemax someday, but I wouldn't want her to end up like Dana Plato... |
What you talkin bout Franklin?
Alyssa Milano is a desirable path |

I certainly don't wish death on her. Maybe I will root for her career arc to follow that of.... Shannon Tweed? Alyssa Milano? |
I've never read the books or seen any of the films (in fact, I didn't even know there was more than 1 film out already), but all I can say is...
I hope they film the final movie before the red-headed kid turns into Mick Jagger. |

dawgfan is correct...this is the first movie that has had a gap larger than one year from the prior movie.

While I'd love to see continuity in the actors for these characters, and while it would be nice to see them acting the parts at ages that are close to their real age, you also have to consider the negative side for the actors - if they were to stick to a yearly or very nearly yearly schedule, this would essentially remove any chance of 'normal' childhoods for these kids. Shooting on a yearly schedule I can't imagine they have a chance to go to school with kids their age, but instead would have to be tutored on-set the whole time. You have to wonder what effect this has on their socialization skills - on the one hand, they're all very big stars, on the other hand they may not have much of a chance to stay somewhat grounded.
I can see the 4-movie contracts working in a few ways - as pointed out earlier, it will give the actors a chance to leverage bigger paydays if the series is successful (which it most certainly is at this point) and it also gives them an out if these shooting schedules are too much of a burden on their lives. |

Roger Ebert said it best in the review for the second movie, "she is in the early stage of babedom". The upcoming release will unfortunately show her at the awkward stage but she will be stunning in the one they are filming now (and in any future movies). Yes, I think she is extraordinarily cute - in a spectator kind of way.

Well, for whatever it's worth, JKR has said that books six and seven will likely deal with more "adult" themes including romance as well as some of that other crap real people have to deal with. It has also been hinted that Dan, Emma, and Rupert (Harry, Hermione, and Ron, respectively) may need to be replaced in future Harry Potter movies because they are aging faster than their characters. Considering how long it's taken the movies to be made (which in part is due to casting and also in part due to producer changes), this is not surprising.
The first movie came out in 01, then the 2nd in 02, but the 3rd is slated for mid-04 (4 June in the states), and the 4th is still in casting and early filming stages. Considering that between movies 1 and 2 you could see major height/development differences particularly in Dan and Rupert (including Rupert's voice change), this makes the likeliehood of them changing characters out even more promising. ~tk |

'Potter' Kids Face Ax for Fifth Film The 14-year-old face of the "Harry Potter" (search) movies is getting too old to play the part, so his role may eventually be recast with a younger actor, producers admitted yesterday. The same goes for the other young "Potter" stars, Rupert Grint (search) (who plays Ron Weasley) and Emma Watson (search) (Hermione Granger), both of whom are also 14. "There will come a point when one, two, or all three of them will move on," said David Heyman, who has produced all the Potter films, including "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban," which opens June 4. "I don't know when that will be — with the fifth, sixth or seventh movies — but it's inevitable." Radcliffe, who will turn 15 on July 23, is now two years older than his character, and the age difference will just get bigger, because Potter only grows one year older in each successive movie and producers haven't been able to keep up the pace. There was only a one-year lag between 2001's "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" and 2002's "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," but fans had to wait a year and a half for "Azkaban." All three "Potter" stars are signed on for the fourth movie in the series, "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," which began shooting three weeks ago with director Mike Newell ("Four Weddings and a Funeral") and a projected release date of November 2005. But they don't have contracts for the fifth film, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," which is slated to begin shooting at the end of next year. After that, the picture gets even murkier, because the projected sixth and seventh "Potter" books haven't even been written yet. Author J.K. Rowling (search) has nixed rumors that she would deliver Book Six by the end of 2004 — and she hasn't offered a new release date. |
Well, on a positive note, if Emma Watson is out of work after the next film, it just accelerates her potential downfall into a Playboy layout and soft-core porn.
|
So we're supposed to be concerned because it's taking five years to complete four movies during which the main characters age four years? What the fuck?

Young Actors Can Complete Potter Series, Director Says NEW YORK (Reuters) - Despite speculation that the young stars of the Harry Potter films will outgrow their roles, the director of the latest installment believes they can see the popular series through to the end. "It would be amazing to have the whole series with the same kids," Alfonso Cuaron, whose "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" opens worldwide on June 4, said on Tuesday. "It would be priceless. It would be something very special, for the ages." "Azkaban" is the third of a planned seven films based on J.K. Rowling's best-selling book series about the magical students of Hogwarts Academy. Daniel Radcliffe (Harry) and cinematic sidekicks Emma Watson (Hermione) and Rupert Grint (Ron) have so far maintained their enthusiasm for the work, but many wonder whether they will physically outgrow the characters. The trio, who sign for one film at a time, have already begun work on the fourth movie, "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," directed by Mike Newell ("Mona Lisa Smile" and "Four Weddings and a Funeral"). The fifth book, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," was published last year. In the next movie, the young wizards are supposed to be 14 years old, which matches Watson's age. Radcliffe will turn 15 this summer and Grint will turn 16. Cuaron said it would be a landmark achievement for the trio that created the roles to make it through to the end. "Right now they're doing No. 4. There's only three more to go. I just hope they keep the same cast for the whole thing," said Cuaron, adding he would love to direct them again. "So far, they're holding up very good, the way that they are aging. I don't think Dan is going to get way much taller or suddenly grow another eye. Same with Emma, and Rupert is OK. "Let's hope. In the last one they're supposed to be 17. Say they're 19, I think they're going to be very good," he said. "That would be very special." The acclaimed Mexican director of Oscar-nominated movies "Y Tu Mama Tambien" (2001) and "A Little Princess" (1995), said he was so exhausted from directing the Potter film that he could not follow on for the next one. "I need a long siesta." sighed Cuaron. "It's two years of your life, working pretty much seven days a week from 7:30 in the morning to midnight. It's a long journey." Yet Cuaron, 42, said he would love to return and steer the trio through their paces again. "I would love to come back," he said. "My dream is that the cast would remain intact." |
I think any concerns about the actors being 2-3 years older than their characters is far outweighed by the benefits of maintaining the same cast.
Now, whether or not all the main cast members want to do all the movies is another question... |
Well, you know, people on Dawson's Creek and Beverly Hills, 90210 played teenagers until they were almost 30. So that gives real hope to Dan, Emma, and Rupert. :p
