Useless knowledge

I heard this on sports radio here in Toronto this morning, thought it might be an interesting topic for the first day back at school.

There are only 2 cities that use the same colours for all their pro sports teams.

Pittsburgh....Black and gold

Montreal....Red,white and blue.

Why would anyone know this?

Please post your useless knowledge.....i need some entertainment(slow businessday) :)

Suicane75 09-07-2004 11:19 AM

Lincoln had a secretary named Kennedy.
Kennedy had a secretary named Lincoln.
John Wilkes Booths brother saved Lincolns son from being hit by a train.

I think the size is a little misleading there ... much of O'Donnel's head is filled with air, therefore making the 8 pound range still very possible.

the bottom of a wine bottle, where its indented (convex? concave? i can never remember) is called a "punt".

MrBug708 09-07-2004 12:43 PM

Anne Boylin (sp) had 6 fingers on one hand. I raed that in a Disney Adventures when I was 12 and thought I'd never need that ever. I went on a Cruise when I was 16 and lo and behold, in a trivia game, that question came up and my team was the only one to get it right.

In the school where I'm student teaching, classes started today. I showed up in the morning, and was told I didn't need to observe today's classes, so I got an unexpected day off! But tomorrow is the first REAL day of classes.

Lock up your firearms and be wary of any teenagers hanging around your girlfriend's place.

I've read that the words silver, orange and purple are the only words not to rhyme with any other english words.

The definition of a rhyme is any word with the same last syllable.

The only words without rhymes are orange, month and oblige.

Actually, a technical rhyme has to match all the way back to the forst consonant sound of the last accented syllable.

You wouldn't accept a word like "misty" to rhyme with "beauty" -- even though they have identical last syllables. Instead, you would need a word like "duty" to properly rhyme with "beauty."

Or "booty" but that sends us down a different avenue altogether...

In some parts of the US month and punt might rhyme. Maybe even in a country song lyric, but not in proper english.

That's not what I was saying, but it's also true.

I thought the lack of rhyme with words that have entirely different consonant sounds was pretty evident.

There's certainly some poetic license involved, especially in music, but none of those words from Noop's list are true rhymes, of course.

When dolphins (the marine mammals, not the alleged football players in Miami) sleep, they do so one cerebral hemisphere at a time. That is, the halves of their brains take turns sleeping. This is thought to be an adaptation accomodating their need to constantly rise to the surface and get air.

Come to think of it, this might also be true of the Miami Dolphins front office. However, in their case it seems as though they are in a constant cycle of single-hemisphere functioning.
