EDIT: Whoa, what does it say about you when you receive 5 bottles of booze in a 3 day stretch? At least everything was different and there were no doubles. The stuff that I purchased is Bombay Sapphire gin, Jack Daniels, E&J brandy and some Malibu. Add that to the Newcastle/Murphy's Stout in the fridge and I'm ready for a blizzard of mammoth proportions. |

Laphroaig is certainly one of the more unique whiskies, but Lagavulin comes close to that peaty flavor. Most Islay whiskies hint at various degrees of saltwater, seaweed and peat, but Talisker (of the western Highlands) also is somewhat similar. |

Lagavulin(16) is the best generally available Islay malt IMO. Most all of them, however, have that smokey/salty taste. It is what Islay malts are known for, and they play it up. Lag will also run you a bit more than Laphroaig. FWIW, the best bargain single malt that I have had is the Balveine 10 year old. It's pretty cheap b/c it is only 10 years old, but it is also pretty mild and smooth. Nothing like the complexity of an Islay malt, but not harsh either. The best that I have ever had is the Johnnie Walker Blue Label. That was my present to myself when I got engaged. It's like drinking velvet. I don't see me getting another bottle until I have a kid or win the lottery. Oh, and since we are swapping stories, I once tasted some Lagavulin that had been "double aged" in sherry casks. It was like normal Lagavulin, but with a heavy sherry taste underneath it all. Way too heavy and complex for normal consumption, IMO, but a very unique experience. (I don't think that it is available here. The guy who had it got it in Scotland). |
Oh--and this thread has me itching for some single malts.
Any recommendations generally that people want to throw out would be appreciated. I'm always looking to expand my horizons. |

It was mentioned above in relation with scotch, because sometimes scotch is aged at least partly in casks that had previously served to age Port or Sherry. The result is the scotch picks up some of the characteristics of the cask's previous "resident". Malt; well There are two kinds of scotch, single malt and blends. When we were in Helsinki about this time last year, me, my boss, and one of my coworkers pretty much cleaned out the bar at the Scandic hotel in downtown Helsinki. I don't remember much after that, except for the sauna in my boss's room, then going on to the balcony immediately afterwards in the -20 degree weather to roll in the snow, then throw beer bottles into the construction site next door. Malt is one of the ingredients in whiskey. There are several kinds of whiskey, scotch, bourbon, etc. It's also broken into two camps, single malt, and blended. Most whiskeys in the US are blended. Seagram's, Jack Daniels, Jim Beam, Maker's Mark, they are all blended whiskeys. Most of the whiskey that comes from Scotland is single malt, and there are distinctive areas that produce varying flavors. I, myself, prefer the Islay style, as they usually have more of a peat moss flavor to them. As for port, it usually referrs to a specific kind of dessert wine that comes from the Oporto region of Portugal. It is usually much sweeter than dinner red wines. There are several varieties of this as well. The two most known are ruby ports and tawny ports. I prefer the tawny ports. And, as for most kinds of wine, there are certain years that are known to have produced exceptional batches. |

Ah to complete my thoughts from above, and add onto what the others have said.
A single malt scotch is the result or product of a single distiller's efforts for a season or year. In other words, they take all of the whisky from a single of their "treatments" for a single year and age it in casks, combine the results of the years work, dillute is a bit, bottle it and sell it as a "single malt scotch". A blended whisky is made by a distiller that purchases portions of other distillers' single malts, and combines them together. Hopefully the result is a scotch that is greater than the sum of it's single malt parts. Some blends like the Johnny Walker Blue mentioned above are better, well smoother and more complex than many of the single malts. For anyone starting out with Scotch I recommend trying a variety to determine your specific tastes. Fine liquor stores carry miniature bottles of the single malts and blends, so you can see if you like something for $5 rather than $75. As a guide Islay scotches are smoky and peaty with a bit of a saltiness. Speyside scotches are salty, and smoky and peaty. Highland scotches are lighter than the Islays and Speysides, much less smoke and peat. Last but not least. Don't drink it straight, and don't drink it over ice or with cold water soda or other wise. The cold kills the taste. If you are drinking cheap stuff(Scotch or otherwise)to have a good time, ice it up and get lit, that is fine. If you are trying to actually taste the scotch, then cut it with room temp bottled water. I usually go one fourth to one third water. The water really brings out a lot of the flavor and scents of the scotch. I used to think it was silly or at least not very manly to "cut" the scotch, but the difference is quite notable. |

When I bought my house it had the wet bar (located behind the bar in my photo) and I decided to buy a mountain of booze to go with it. The liquor is more of a decoration than a statement on my current drinking habits. To be honest, I expected to entertain a bit more than what happened, and even when I did people rarely drank. So now, I make a mixed drink every so often. More often, I put something in a coffee. I think the Stoli flavored vodkas are pretty darn good, but it would be almost as easy to flavor a drink with something else. For instance, instead of having a vanilla vodka it would be just as east to put vanilla in a vodka, or have vanilla schnapps. |

Also really once you have tried any of the above, you will lose any regard for Cuervo Gold. Which is odd, because that is what so many people think Tequila tastes like. |

This is about all I drink alcohol wise so I always make sure I have a little bit of all of everything on hand at all times. EDIT: All the hard stuff isn't in a "cabinet", its all in the freezer. |
I had Cabo Wabo about a month ago, and I'd definitely put it with the Patron's of the tequila world...Very smooth and palatable..
