Enigma2 #1

Ah, the ‘80s.

Freshwater Trees

December 2004 United (a first of sorts)

All over the place, but Judge Wapner had his meltdown sooner than we expected

Seems like there's no love for the enigma2. Well, here goes. Maybe this'll kickstart things. Although it'll most likely sidetrack everyone.

Freshwater Trees - Possibly mangroves?

A type of ink - The only type of ink that comes to mind would be India ink. Maybe colossal squid ink?

Almost half of Alaska - Aleutians? Tundra? Devoid of people?

Sausage - Mmmmm...sausage.

Typical wedding registry item - Plate, spoon, butter dish, silverware, glasses?

Terminus - end, ending, ending point. Also I think it was an early name for Atlanta.

As for how any of this relates to the 80's, I'm clueless. Perhaps band names or names of songs? TV shows?

Well, I've probably ended up throwing people off track, so I'll stop now.

rkmsuf 02-09-2005 11:55 AM

The answer is Flock of Seagulls

Next.

Wedding item = China
Ink = India
Sausage = Italian

Countries theme?

weinstein7 02-09-2005 12:10 PM

Sausage could also be Polish
Birthplace of Boston's daddies: New York? (courtesy of Pedro)
Terminus: Atlanta (good call buzzbee)
United: My guess is that its someplace United Airlines started service to, but no idea where.

Okay, some tentative answers in bold. Location theme seems pretty strong. However, it seems we've got a mix of countries and cities. Not sure that we should.

EDIT: Ack! Changed from italics to bold since the quote is in italics.

weinstein7 02-09-2005 12:36 PM

To try another approach, there are 9 clues. Since the hint was about the 80s, I suspect each clue corresponds to a year, and the remaining year is the answer. Since we've got the location thing going, I think it might be some sort of champions, but I can't figure out what sport would fit.

cartman 02-09-2005 12:39 PM

December 2004 United (a 1st of sorts)- United Airlines resumed non-stop service to Ho Chi Minh City

cartman 02-09-2005 12:40 PM

also, Texas is almost half the size of Alaska

enigma2 02-09-2005 12:45 PM

Making no representations about whether you are on the right track or not, I just discovered that I left something off one of the clues above. I will make the proper edits.

Buzzbee 02-09-2005 12:47 PM

I was thinking it might be longitude since several of the locations are in the 80's, but I don't think that is it since all the clues don't fit

Based on the edit, I'm thinking New York is incorrect, and that it might be England (founding fathers).

weinstein7 02-09-2005 12:50 PM

Yup, that would be my vote as well. I sure got smacked down on that one :)

mhass 02-09-2005 12:56 PM

To conform to the country idea, Terminus might be Georgia and Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam.

Buzzbee 02-09-2005 01:04 PM

And Cypress = Greece?

I think for purposes of solutions (assuming we're on to something with the country references) Cyprus is itself a nation.

Haha, very true. It could be Cyprus, however.

Ach, beat me to it QS.

Of course, this still leaves the Wapner clue. I got nothing there.

Buzzbee 02-09-2005 01:23 PM

Ah, yes. After a quick bit of internet research, I have brushed up on my Greek history/Cyprus history.

Okay, possible links to this:

The People's Court
Rainman
...?

It made me think of the world court, in (I think) The Hague, Netherlands -- I suppose that's a possible. Doesn't ring true to me, like most of the rest do, though.

It is not pretty.

cartman 02-09-2005 01:29 PM

something we might be overlooking for sausage might be frankfurter, so maybe it's Frankfurt, Germany?

Buzzbee 02-09-2005 01:29 PM

Ok, this may be a bit of a stretch, but haven't all of these places had territorial disputes or social uprisings?

Cypress vs. Greece
England vs. India
China and Tienneman (sp?) square
Georgia splitting from Soviet Union/Russia
Iceland, well...uh nevermind.

weinstein7 02-09-2005 01:31 PM

I don't know if there's anything to this, but so far many of the countries that we've come up with have had some sort of civil war/independence struggle/seperatism issue etc. in recent decades.

Vietnam (Vietnam War)
Poland (end of Communism)
Georgia (independence/rose revolution last year)
China (Tianenman Square)
Cyprus (civil war)
England (a bit of a stretch...Falkland Islands?)
India (Kashmir)

Of course, this could be more of a commentary on the state of the world today than an intended pattern in the puzzle.

edit: damnit, i was beaten again!

Buzzbee 02-09-2005 01:32 PM

Same idea, but wienstein presented it a little more clearly.

Of course these all didn't happen in the 80's, I don't think. Vietnam was earlier.

mhass 02-09-2005 01:36 PM

The only thing I remember about Iceland in the 80's was the summit with Gorbachev. Ring any bells for the rest of them?

Buzzbee 02-09-2005 01:39 PM

Perhaps these are locations of summits/accords/signing of peace treaties?

EDIT: Obiviously world history isn't my strong suit.

weinstein7 02-09-2005 01:45 PM

Honestly I think the conflict angle might just be a coincidence. I mean, how many countries can you think of that DIDN'T have some sort of violent conflict in the last 25 years? Also, there are a lot of stretches there, especially with Cypress/Cyprus/Georgia.

I still think it's something happened in each city/country in one specific year in the 80s, but I don't know what.

TazFTW 02-09-2005 01:51 PM

Are we sure this is in reference to the 1980s?

QuikSand 02-09-2005 01:57 PM

I did more than my usual contribution to bona fide research, and have now ruled out "sites of world chess championships" from consideration. Carry on.

It might be a stretch, but I'm looking at Oscar nominated movies for Best Picture in the 1980s, and where they were based:

Vietnam - Platoon, Born on 4th of July
Sausage (Vienna) - Mozart
Georgia - Driving Miss Daisy
China - The Last Emporer
Cyprus (civil war)-???
England (a bit of a stretch...Falkland Islands?) - The Elephant Man
India - Ghandi, A Passage to India
Wapner - Rainman

Platoon, Amadeus, Driving Miss Daisy, The Last Emperor, Chariots of Fire, Rain Man, Ghandi

All won Best Picture in the 80s.

weinstein7 02-09-2005 02:12 PM

Wow, good call. I think we're on to it now.

1980 - Ordinary People
1981 - Chariots of Fire (England)
1982 - Gandhi (India)
1983 - Terms of Endearment
1984 - Amadeus (Austria)
1985 - Out of Africa
1986 - Platoon (Vietnam)
1987 - The Last Emperor (China)
1988 - Rain Man (Wopner)
1989 - Driving Miss Daisy (Georgia?)

Just leaves the Alaska clue.

mhass 02-09-2005 02:16 PM

It's not Africa (Out of Africa) or Kenya

cartman 02-09-2005 02:19 PM

Here are the winners from 1980-1990

1990 Driving Miss Daisy (1989)
1989 Rain Man (1988)
1988 Last Emperor, The (1987)
1987 Platoon (1986)
1986 Out of Africa (1985)
1985 Amadeus (1984)
1984 Terms of Endearment (1983)
1983 Gandhi (1982)
1982 Chariots of Fire (1981)
1981 Ordinary People (1980)
1980 Kramer vs. Kramer (1979)

Just leaves the Texas clue.

Terms of Endearment had Jack Nicholson playing a retired astronaut (Houston, we have a problem).

And most of the film was supposed to be based in Texas, as it was a Larry McMurtry story.

weinstein7 02-09-2005 02:26 PM

Alaska is a little more than twice the size of Kenya, so that might be the Out of Africa clue (it's a bit of a stretch, it's like 1.4:.6, but could be close enough.)

Still need the freshwater trees.

And was Driving Miss Daisy actually in Georgia? I was just guessing, I haven't seen the movie in years.

edited to add: Even better, it was actually set in Atlanta (aka Terminus).

edited again: FWIW, Ordinary People is set in a suburb of Chicago.

It's pretty much all over but the shouting, so here are a couple of more clues to keep it from dying on the vine:

Boston's Daddies. Boston Celtics. Ireland.

Lake Forest is where Ordinary People was based.
In the movie rainman Judge Wapner had his meltdown just after they talked about Cincinnati.

The theme seems to be where the setting of the movie was at, but I cannot correlate that to the movie not included on the list.

mhass 02-10-2005 09:30 PM

I've stared at a list just like Airhog's too long. Apparently we're supposed to reverse engineer the movie/setting to a clue like his. I've tried anything that seemed Kenyan to me and got zip.

Airhog 02-10-2005 10:18 PM

see thats what I thought, none of the other movies seem to fit anywhere else. but even if you move some of un obvious choices around. Im afraid that one of the clues I have is probably wrong.

Just bumping this to the next page for easy reference.

cuervo72 02-10-2005 10:21 PM

"Find where the missing one is, and that is your answer."

I thought the "missing one" was Out of Africa - I didn't see a specific clue for that one - but 'Kenya' and 'Nairobi' were not the answers (unless I had capitalization wrong). Or maybe just 'Africa'?

(I do wonder if there should be a convention in the enigma puzzles that says only lowercase is used in the solution...)

edit: I guess that's where mhass already headed with his reasoning...

There are a few other things that dont fit still. The Wapner Meltdown. Im not sure how cincinnati has anything to do with that, other than a line in the movie but it doesnt fit the rest of the movies, since they all refer to the locations of where the movie was, and Rain man took place in the midwest.

Also, this may be way off base, but the time period of the move Out of Africa, kenya was actually a colony of England during this time. But I dont think to relevant

enigma2 02-11-2005 08:29 AM

You guys are close.

Think of a sport, not involving a Boston team, but a sport that takes place in Boston every year.

That should, hopefully, put you over the top.

mhass 02-11-2005 08:30 AM

Distance running? That's the tie to Kenya? Oy.

Airhog 02-11-2005 06:03 PM

Im still not sure how the boston daddies clue fits to Kenya, other than the fact that the winners of lasts years event were from kenya. This would leave Chariots of Fire out, but I havent found the anwser going that route either. Im just stumped, and close to giving up, cause I dont see anymore progress...

In what country was Chariots of Fire set?

Airhog 02-11-2005 07:25 PM

It was set in england and france both of which I tried. also tried paris, united kindom great britain. I even tried wales, scotland, and paris.

Try england again. The answer is in your PM box.

Airhog 02-12-2005 07:31 AM
