Music Maven 3
I've posted before about an online game I developed, but I thought I'd pimp it again since a new version is starting this weekend - Music Maven 3. The game is basically an online Music Industry simulation game. Music Maven 2 was very successful and was around for about 2 years, with thousands of bands playing. It has taken me 18 months to complete MM3 so I'm very excited about finally being able to launch the game. (It took so long not because of the huge enhancements - but mostly because I took several hiatuses along the way.) As always, I strive to make the game as realistic as possible - for example, it contains hundreds of real music clubs around the world in which your band can play.
Music Maven 3 For those that enjoyed version 2, here's a partial list of the new features for MM3: Quote:
The first sim is Sunday night, so I encourage you to sign up now to not miss any sims. /end commercial |
I know I had quite a lot of fun playing and anyone who didn't give it a go and likes text based web games check it out.
to lighthousekeeper: I had one problem that probably caused me to stop playing and was wondering if you had addressed that. After a couple of months of playing, you had maxed out your musician abilities through practicing (the musical ones). However, the other attributes could only be changed in unbalanced fashion by resting (ie the max you could get from one ability would be 3 so that attribute on all your musicians would always be low while another you could raise 7 or 10 points in a day and so it was better to raise those). So, once your band became more "mature" in the game, the easiest way to advance your band was to go audition a new set of members because the points would be redistributed and it's much easier to raise the musical abilities because you practiced every day. So, basically, the best way to get the best band members was to completely replace all of your members and that reduced the "stickiness" of the game for me. SI |
i'm joining. i would have preferred the option when making my band to have a guitarest/vocalist as the same guy, however.
|

I'm not sure how long ago you stopped playing but at one point in MM2 I added many types of resting activities that allowed the musicians to raise a variety of attributes. But, I will definitely take a look at the balancing of resting activities to improve and addresss unbalance issues to try to make it more balanced (either have less improvement each month, or introduce more factors to reduce certain attributes). |
The Truth is in (emo).
It'd be cool if we had like a buddies system, like add group to a certain list to keep tabs on people we know. |
Quote:
In a way there is a buddies system in the form of Record Labels. Groups of friends typically create and join the same record label. (You won't be able to create a record label though until you've played the game for several days because you need at least at 20 rating in Popularity to create a record label.) |
Ok. See you have Bogarts (Cincy,OH) in the game, with a good rating to boot! Nice.
|
Fascist Eagle, the hard rockers from Houston are back (and because we can, we've got the 80's sax player in the rock mix)
SI |
The Outsiders are in.
|
Charlie Swager needs to get that plastic surgery (18 for looks, which is a little high for you anyways.)
|
and on top of being ugly, I'm a girl, too. :(
|
I had forgetten all about this game but am very glad to see it back.
|
I've played before a couple of times and found it a lot of fun :D

Same here. Looking forward to the changes and the games rebirth. |

Acckkk! Damn it all! Check before you hit submit on these things! ;) Lets see if I can get it right a second time. |

Watery Hands are ready to rock the fucking house. |

I'm in. 'The New Age' an Indie Rock outfit (of the Joy Division, Chamelons, post-punk ilk). From Manchester, UK of course. :)
|
Dola
A question. Do you need to buy instruments first before doing anything else? Or are they pretty much meaningless showing off? ;) |
"Downriver" is back again to dominate the hard rock scene

Meaningless showoff |
Do you think you will ever make a solo/career game like this?
|
Is there any way to try to tour together with another artist/artists? Or is the only way you can really do that by just trying to tour the same areas at the same time?
|
The Blind Fish (Indie) are in
|
Quote:
I started off making a solo game, but never finished - now the technology is outdated (VB6). link I would need to start from scratch and I've been telling myself that after I get MM3 up and running and stable that I'd go back to that. |
Quote:
Good luck. I think it would be a great entry into the genre and you would have at least one paying customer. :) |
My girls had better crank out some new tunes this month.
|
The Clap(Hard Rock) are ready to kick some ass
|
The Jive Turkeys (Comedy) are in, straight outta NOLA (New Orleans).
|
Canadian Myth is back and ready to climb the charts.

midnight EST. so about 90 minutes. |
any idea what time the sim is?
|
the website says EST. that's all i know. check the 'stats' button in the lower left hand side when logged in.
|
I could be wrong, but I thought it was midnight CT not ET.
SI |
I really wanted to play and couldn't figure out why I can't see the buttons. Then I remembered and checked the source . . . again, the buttons are flash. Huh? Why? Flash buttons?!?!? I have plug-ins disabled in my browser and haven't updated flash in ages. I had the same problem with the last version.
Oh, well. Guess no MM for me. Good luck to y'all with the game. |
is a month or week ran every night? just curious. anxious to get my dudes rocking.
|
Back in MM2, there was a month done per night.

I cannot connect to the database. :( I remember this problem very well. |
Oh man, we're in deep shit. We made $7 at one show... $7!!!
We're down to 8 dollars, and we only came up with 2 songs out of 21 days of militant practice. |
Sloth got themselves a new drummer and wrote a crappy (7) song called "Wrecking Ball."
|
Flair (Alt. Rock) is up and running!
|
The Klein Bottles Got 1 new song and lost lots of happiness
|
The New Age did lotsa practicing. Also, they have (bravely in some cases) revealed themselves to the world through the wonder of photography. Check 'em out.
|
Heh anthem wrote one song that they barely know. Also I cant seem to find a show for them.
|
Somatic did some practice and rest last month, but did not come up with a new song yet. We have a tour this month in the Northeast 4/1 - 4/5 so hopefully that will get us some cash.
|
Vampires of Doom wrote their first song, called Intro. Only my keyboard player has an instrument, so i suppose it's a keyboard-only instrumental...
How do you make money in this game? I'm already short on cash!!! |
Quote:
How can you tour if you don't know any songs? |
Quote:
I think the explaination is if you don't have a full set list (or an empty one in my case), it's "replaced" with cover songs. |
Play cover songs
|
Ok...I'm in as well with my alt rock band Strutter.
|
Quote:
If I didn't let bands play shows right out of the gate, then my fear is that people would have too little to do initially and quit playing the game right off the bat. |
Quote:
OK, that's fine and makes sense. I just didn't know it, so i've had my band basically practicing the whole month... :) |
Earworms, baby.
|
The Blind Fish wrote 1 song, made $16 on a tour and rested for a few days.
Next month we have a couple more shows, a bit more practice and the band is resting by watching Song Writing 101 on PBS. |
Well, crap! The Klein Bottle's Bassist is saying we need a new space...we have negative cohesion, but we did make $30 on our first show.
|
Flair wrote their first song, "Crazy", and lost a lot of money doing it;)
So who's going to set up the FOFC record label? |
Kleft practiced, toured and rested
I didn't learn any new songs, but I'm close... |
|
Short One Crouton has just penned their first song, "I Wish I Could Be In Your Pants (So You Could Feel)".
Hahahaha :) |
. |
Is the game going to be reset?
|

Um thanks. Dangers of quickly reading the forum. |
Shit. We've already been forced into an unrealistic tour of North America because we need the cash. Nothing like hitting the road with 3 songs.
I think part-time jobs should be an option for the band spends their time. |
Is the site down for anyone else right now, or is it just me?

Anyone have an idea for the label photo? SI |
Well, I was messing around with labels and disbanded "FOFC: The Label". When I tried to recreate it, it claimed to be successful but it didn't reappear (so likely the delete process doesn't quite work).
So now, the new label is called "FOFC Live!". Same great label, new, better taste. I even contributed a crisp, clean $1 bill to the label fund :D SI |
Applied.
|
Applied here as well. sterlingice you should have an maven mail from me.
|
The Blind Fish applied
|
PTSH(you dont wanna know what it stands for) applied
|
applied
|
Death to bbor, a heavy metal band from El Paso has just joined up...
|
I think I applied...
Not very obvious if it did. |
Quote:
I should probably make it more obvious when you apply to a label - right now you can see that info on the Band News page. |
Gotcha, I see it now.
Wasn't sure if it took, but didn't want to click it 100 times either. I am signed up though, so all is well. Yeah, a screen saying your application has been sent wouldn't hurt. |
Sloth has applied for the FOFC Live Label after selling out our demo tape this month! :D
|
I'll try to get you guys added but I want to read up about how you give a contract to people (you can't just click "accept" or something, you have to offer a contract to someone). But every time I try to search the forum, it dies "page can't display" but I'll keep trying.
For now, I'll just offer the max 5 album/5 single contract to all of you with a whopping $0 help from the label ;) EDIT: I've offered 5/5/0 to about half but I was thinking that there might be a down side to being tied down so long so the rest of you will be 1/2/0 since that will keep you on the label a long time (gotta get 8 songs) and it'll give us more time to check out labels. If you got a 5/5/0 and are worried about that, just reject the contract and try to join again. SI |
I think I'll make a little chart here in a couple of days (once people accept) with all the members of the label.
The following bands sent a message but didn't try to join the label so you have to do that before I can add you: Jive Turkeys (Pumpy) SI |
The Klein Bottles have applied.
|
Also keep in mind that there is a limit of 20 bands per label.
|
Quote:
|
Less than half that applied so no emminent danger of too many bands.
