Wow!
Mike Williams???
OK. Let's start the excuses for Harrington... 1. Mike Williams was a rookie who hadn't played football for a year. After a year under his belt he will really be ready. 2. Rogers was essentially a rookie after his first two seasons were lost. He'll really be ready. 3. If the Lions had taken Alex Barron he would have solidified the line and been able to protect Joey. Then, Joey would have had the breakout season. 4. If his receivers had only stayed healthy... 5. Having to look over his shoulder at Garcia all season didn't help him. 6. Look at how Drew Brees improved when a veterain like McCardell came in. What Joey needs is an accomplished veterain to throw to instead of all these young guys with "potential." 7. It's the offense. The Lions need to play to Joey's strength, instead of a passing game that relies on accuracy. 8. If the Lions could only put some talent around him... 9. Tedford should be the offensive coordinator. He knows Joey. 10. Next year will be his breakout year. Wait 'til next year... |
11. He sucks.
|
I'm still at a loss for words.
If Millen grabs Justin Tuck in the second round.... I'll forgive him. |
Your negativity makes me sad.
I think it was a great pick, since he was the best guy left on the board BY FAR. I wouldn't be suprised if Millen is sitting back taking offers on Williams as we speak. Even if we keep him, it provides us with yet another game-breaker, which is the best thing to get when you can. |
I also think it was a great pick.

You know. As a Lion fan I haven't considered this possibility. Maybe you might be on to something... GAR-SEE-AHH! GAR-SEE-AHH! GAR-SEE-AHH! |
I'm not actually sure what to make of Joey. I'm starting to think there's a strong possibility he just isn't very good. I think he could be decent with all these good recievers, though. Maybe I'm wrong and he'll turn out to be pretty good.
|
I'm also in the camp that Mike Williams was a great pick. I've just become a Lions fan if they keep him (although I'd still root for the Eagles or the Saints over the Lions.)
|
I like Mike Williams ... just not sure he was the best pick for Detroit.
|
so im the only one that doesent think joey sucks? he was throwing to guys named swinton and kircus and a williams that wasnt 100%. is it his fault that his WRs cant catch the damn ball?
|
It's funny. The last time the Lions took a WR at #10, it turned out pretty well: Herman Moore. Williams reminds me a whole lot of Moore. I hope Williams turns out to be like Herman.
|
Quote:
its his fault that the WRs are always injured. |
Quote:
Not entirely. Sure, Joey throws the ball where the receiver has to sacrifice his body to make a play, but if it wasn't for the defense, the ground, the frail human body, and physics I am sure Joey's receivers could stay healthy and he could have a marvelously medeocre career. |
Man.. Did Mike Williams mess around with Merrill Hoge's wife or something?
he cannot stand him |
joey just always looks so jumpy in the pocket, he needs to settle down
but that trio.. could be nasty. |
Only thing that ensures is the cheesers that play online in madden 2006 will all be picking detroit..
|
Quote:
whats a cheeser? |
Quote:
Why what did he say? |
Quote:
He has been badmouthing him for a week. He basically says Williams is only going to be a slow possession receiver who won't be able to be successful unless he has an explosive receiver opposite him. He thinks Williams shouldn't have been taken til the end of the 1st round. |
Quote:
Well, he obviously knows more than 31 head scouts. I mean, the man is a genius. |
Mike Williams is an excellent player but, like everyone else has said, the Lions have more pressing needs.

Actually, if you have followed the Lions off-season, they don't really have any "glaring" holes. |

True. Harrigington is a pussy. Garcia will be the QB by the end of the 4-5 week. |
Quote:
I don't think he said end of the 1st round, I believe he said he should be picked in the 4th round. He also said he would be out of the league, playing in the CFL, within 2 years. In response Mel Kiper told Merril that he was an idiot and Williams will be going to the Hall of Fame. |
It was an interesting pick for sure. It's a lot of money to invest in one position and it will be interesting to see if they can spread the ball around enough for everyone. The Lions had a horrible time converting on third down and scoring TD's in the red zone. M. Williams should help considerably in both areas.
I am not sure what it says about how the Lions feel about C. Rogers. Maybe they are more concerned with his Mr. Glass type body than they let on. R. Williams also has trouble staying healthy. The pick surprised the hell out of me, but I am ok with it. Shaun Cody was a solid pick and will help improve the defense. Though I was hoping Brodney Pool would slip to them. They need a free safety with good range. Not sure if Holt is that guy. |
Quote:
Well QB is one position they could have looked at but I think the addition of Mike Williams is better than the addition of any of the QBs left on the board. I think they could have certainly addressed needs at DL and DB. Dre Bly isn't exactly young and they will need to find his successor. |
Quote:
The Lions feel like they are "ok" on the DL with Hall, Redding, Rogers, and Wilkinson. Shaun Cody addresses their need there. He's pretty versitaille and can play DT or DE if necessary, like Redding. Bly isn't that old. He's still under 30, so it's early yet to be contemplating his replacement. I think the Lions may have gone DB with that pick if any of Pac-man, Antrell Rolle, or Carlos Rogers were availble at the 10 spot. None of them were, so... |
Quote:
If you have to ask, you probably are one. |
Mike Willams is Keyshaun Johnson #2.
|
Quote:
That statement is what hurt Mike this draft....The kid can game, and he, out of any of the WR's ran the smoothest, and most crips routes. Braylon has more raw talent, Williams understands the mechanics of the position, and honestly, some of the top WR's of the game weren't fast, they just understood the mechanics of their position. If the dumbass Harrington (I WAS PISSED, when the Lions drafted him) can get the ball to the WR's this year without setting them up for the punishment, the Lions will have one hell of a year offensively. I still worry about their Defense, I don't think they have done right there. But who knows. |
Quote:
Keyshaun, in his prime, without the "me, me, give me the damn ball" crap. I'd take that. |

Well, the Lions address the "developmental QB" situation by trading with NE and taking Orlovsky that QB from U-Conn. I was hoping they'd take McPherson with that pick, but oh well...
|
Quote:
I wasn't betting on us drafting McPherson, so I wasn't suprised. Har. |
Quote:
My bad. Hoge is even more of a tool than I thought in that case. |
I'm guessing this was a "butts in the seat" type of pick, something that would potentially excite the fan base with the possibilities. I speculate that this means that for one year, they'll all be together and then one of them will be dealt depending on performance. When does Rogers go into free agency?
|
Quote:
Hmmm....i doubt it was a "butts in the seats" pick. Considering they sodl out the Silverdome(80,000)constantly. And every game at Ford Field is a sellout and will be for quite some time. We just love our Lions here. :) |
I suppose that's true. Okay, a "buzz" pick then. Either that or they really, really, REALLY want to make sure Harrington's got no excuse for f-ing things up this year.
|
Harrington blows and blows. you'll get no argument from me about that.
However, this Three WR set they have now is perfectly tailored to Garcia, if anyone is believeing Joey will be the starter they are just going along with the PR stichk. |
I am a little tired of the Harrington (and Boller) bashing.
First off the excuses do have some merit to them. Second, it takes some time for guys. Some a little more then others. How many guys remember how great Trent Green and Rich Gannon were their first 3 years, or 6 years (yes I know they were not first round picks, and those guys have higher expectations)? Now, don't get all nuts on me. I am not saying they are good or great, but I do think now that their teams have upgraded the players around them a little more they should get one more good chance. I think the Drew Brees comparison could be a fair one here, since he was considered crap by fans (and others) and was on his way out. But the team got a little better as a whole, and he finally started putting into play what he had learned over the previous 3 seasons. I would give both Harrington and Boller a fair shot going into this season. If halfway through they are still sucking like before, then go ahead and bash them. Just keep starting them because the Packers play both Detroit and this season Baltimore. :D |
Quote:
The Packers play the Lions every year..they are in the same division.... |

Wait a minute, isn't our coach the last winning coach the Niners had? Oh, and he led them into the playoffs too right? |
Quote:
they play the Lions AND this season Baltimore. |
I miss Mooch as a San Francisco Coach. So far I like Nolan though.
|
So far Mariucci has done very little to impress. He has to take as much blame for the offense last season as Harrington. Harrington was basically handcuffed, the playcalling WAY too conservative. In the rare instances when Harrington was allowed to open it up more, or in two-minute drill type situations where they needed bunches of yards quickly, he looked much sharper. I feel that if they finally open things up a bit more then Harrington should be primed for a big season. If I'm wrong, at least we have a competent backup this year.
|
Az Hakim and Brock Marion have both just been released....
|
Wow.
Nice site Big Mike Williams. Sounds like Antmeister has been at work yet again... http://www.bigmikewilliams.com |
Damn, they did that shit RIGHT!!!!

I promise you that the Lions won't have a winning season with Mooch as coach. |
Quote:
I'll take that bet..... I suppose we can arrange some sort of bet... right? |
Well, knowing that idiot Mike McMillen he'll keep Mooch for 10 years of losing seasons.
|
Quote:
Who the hell is Mike McMillen??? Sounds like some bastardization of the Lions GM and their ex-back up QB. |
Matt Millen, lol.
He doesn't deserve to have his name spelled right anyways. |
Quote:
Wow, I don't know what glass pipe you have been hitting, but the West Coast Offense is about the QB, if you have a QB that can play, with TALENTED WR's, your offense will move the ball and score points. I promise you the Lions will have a winning season and at least Wild Card it this season. |

 Wow. (How appropriate has the title of this thread been throughout?) Millen's be a very solid GM. He had a rough go at it the first few seasons, there was a steep learning curve. But he's strung together a couple of solid drafts over the course of the last 2-3 years (Harrington depending) and has gone out and hauled in some quality free agents: Bly, Woody, Kennedy, Pollard, etc. I think he's pretty well respected in the league at the moment and I hope he stays. Perhaps after the first year or two such a comment would be appropriate, but he's come a long way and deserves some respect. Then again, success is measured in wins and that is one thing he doesn't reallly have... yet. |
Quote:
You know, I would normally agree with you here, but the NFC is so bereft of defensive talent right now, I see it happening right now, and honestly, they have a blue collar style defense, I think a lot of us will be surprised. However, I don't think they will get farther than the wild card round because they lack a big time LB. |
Quote:
Don't forget though, Bailey will be back and (hopefully) at 100%, and Lehman will build off of his strong rookie year. I think the linebacking corps is going to be better than most think. |
Who's their WR scout? I have visions of FOF where the Scout is rated Poor for Receivers. Look at the track record...
Or, the Coach is rated Poor for injuries. Dunno. |
Quote:
I think the latter is much more accurate than the former. Despite his injuries, Roy Williams had an oustanding rookie year. He was well worth the pick. Charles Rogers, in the handful of games he played, showed flashes of brilliance and showed that he could definitely play at WR. I don't think this is a matter of the Lions scouts mis-judging talent at the wide-out position, it's an injury situation tied together with mediocare-to-poor QB play (it must be said) and perhaps some poor offensive play calling. These wideouts, by all appearances, have talent. |
Beautiful catch by Roy Williams

You are kidding right? Garcia was (and is) nothing - it was the offense and T.O. making Garcia look good - he's never been more than a below average NFL QB. |
