WSOP Pool
Last year we had a WSOP pool for the main event, but I thought it would be more interesting if we did a pool for the entire event. Here's the idea:
1) You may pick 10 Poker players 2) To make it more interesting, you have to pick at least one female and one non-bracelet winner among your 10. 3) You will score one point for every $1,000 that player earns in an event. For example, last year, someone would have scored 5,000 points in the Main event if they had Greg Raymer. 4) Pick one player from your list as the person you think will win the WSOP. If you correctly pick this, then you are an automatic winner (and the highest pts person will be 2nd place). We're starting a little late, so we'll have to skip the first couple events. The first even that will count is Event #4, the WSOP Limit Hold Em. Therefore, all picks must be in by Sunday noon which is when that tourney begins. You can search for bracelet winners at - http://www.pokerpages.com/pokerinfo/...-winners01.htm Reply here with your selections.... |
The main event should have a ridiculsouly large number of entrants this year.
|

Impatient! :) It's there now. |

Kathy Liebert has won a bracelet. |

bump, we have 3 and a half hours
|
Event #4 is down to 15 people. Looks like everyone relevant has been eliminated. Those who had Hellmuth get 4.2 pts and those who had Duke get 10.135 (yes, I am gonna be that anal).
|
Event #5 is down to final table and none of our people appear to have made it this far.
Grinder 3.375 points. Ivey 2.410 points. Didn't see any of the other names in the money for this event. Are there any worries about spoiling events for people who might read the thread up until the big game? Obviously the information is out there for people who want to find it ... |
I think if you are reading this thread you are probably interested enough to follow the results
|
Whatever, dude. |
I was trying to figure that one out also
|
Sweet, I got 2 decent money finishes in the 6 handed no limit holdem tourney.
|
The people who have Esfandiari are gonna get some good pts out of this one. At least I had Juanda, and Duke in Event #4, so I'm off to a decent start.
|
did the magician win?
|
Quote:
|
Rocks and rings. He is so 1.4.
|
63.020 points for the Magician.
|
Go Harry Demetriou! I didn't pick him, but I really enjoyed watching him on ESPN's coverage last year.
|
34 people left in Event #7, including Hoyt Corkins, Barry Greenstein, Phil Gordon, David Williams (yay!), and Annie Duke. Points scored so far:
Jennifer Harman 5.285 |
Dammit, I guess I can't play?
|
Actually, I shouldn't have cut it off. Instead, anyone can go ahead and make your picks, but you can't score pts for any tourney that started before you made your picks.
|
David Williams 7.705
Annie Duke 7.705 Hoyt Corkins (anyone pick him?) 11.010 |
Female - Jennifer Harmon
Non-Bracelet - Gus Hanson Other - Howard Lederer, Dan Harrington, Daniel Negreanu, Chris Ferguson, Phil Hellmuth, Erik Seidel (ME), Minh Nguyen and Phil Gordon. |
Barry Greenstein 11.010
And I think we're all done for this event. Rooting for Phil Gordon. |
Event #8 (7 Card Stud):
Chris Ferguson 2.610 No one else we picked is still left. For those of you who still want to participate, the points scored so far are pretty miniscule. As the fields and buy ins both get larger, more pts will be scored. These early events probably won't matter so much in the long run in regards to who wins the contest. |
The 2K no-limit hold-em event is down to 49 and has a bunch of our players in it.
Violette 2nd in chips with 133k Giang 77,900 Seidel 60,800 Grinder 60,000 Luske 35,500 Other name guys in contention are Demetriou, Joe Awada, Dutch Boyd, John Bonetti, and David Plastik. I don't think anyone has any of the roughly 100 people who have already cashed. |
I should've picked Bonetti. That guy is funny.
|
Quote:
Well, since you invited me, I'll accept the challenge. I picked mostly favorites, folks who have seemed hot lately, and people who figure to participate in a lot of events. Sorry I'm so unoriginal. Don't take any of this seriously: WOMAN - Kathy Liebert NON-BRACELET WINNER - Marcel Luske YOUR 2005 WSOP MAIN EVENT WINNER (ha!) - Humberto Brenes THE OTHER GUYS - Phil Hellmuth, Scott Fischman, Chris Ferguson, Antonio Esfandiari, Daniel Negreanu, Dan Harrington, Gus Hansen |
Event #9 - No-Limit Hold'em
Winner: Seidel - 611.795 2nd: Violette - 295.970 And there were other players from our lists that cashed. Larry, are you going to provide some kind of an updated standings from time to time on this one? |
Yeah, I'll do a current standings tonight.
|
Sweet. Seidel is awesome. It looks like me and Chubby are the only two that have him.
|
I had Violette! Not bad for the female in my group.
|
Seidel is at another final table - 2K Pot Limit Omaha
Seidel, Arieh, and Ferguson are the players in our pool that have made it this far. |
Quote:
he is VERY solid IMO and I"m glad he's on a tear :) |
Haven't calculated the results yet, but here's a list of the players who scored pts so far. I probably have some people that weren't picked, but hopefully this includes everyone that was picked.

Greenstein is chip leader (92k) going into the final table for the 1,500 Pot Limit Omaha tournament, with Jesus on the short stack (16k). They are just about to the money in the 2K 7 Card Stud event and Lederer is closing in on his first cash of the WSOP. Harman is among the chip leaders and Seidel is among the short stacks at this point. Here is what I have for updated player money counts - including current tournaments where guys have been knocked out (Hellmuth in 10th for PLO).
Seidel - 634.925 Arieh - 381.600 Violette - 304.795 Ferguson - 213.065 Gordon - 146.195 Hennigan - 109.510 Esfandiari - 69.590 Minh Nguyen - 48.345 M. OK, this is close to the standings - haven't subtracted points from Timmy and Honolulu for events prior to their picks, so those numbers probably come down a little bit.
Timmynausea - 1152.198 Hoopsguy - 671.878 Chubby - 668.230 Lathum - 626.250 Honolulu Blue - 368.440 TheLionKing - 363.078 QuikSand - 352.655 Larrymcg421 - 307.760 SirFozzie - 102.380 Seidel is the difference-maker in our pool at this point. And he has a big pile of chips in front of him right now in the 5k no-limit event as they are closing in on the money. Violette and Vahedi are also in good position for that tourney. Biggest bust so far? Hansen hasn't played any events, hurting quite a few people. Ted Forrest with zero cashes was on a couple of lists. Ivey and Negreanu have both put up paltry numbers so far, although I'm not sure Ivey is in all the tournaments like Negreanu. |
Where is Hansen. I have to wonder with the fields so large, are more pro's sticking to the cash games because the tournaments aren't worth the effort.
|
In my case, the numbers are going to come down a lot, probably putting me next-to-last so far.
I'm not too worried about Hansen yet. His style should be perfect for the mega-field, mega-point Main Event, where I expect him to show. Hellmuth and Negreanu are obvious disappointments, but there are many events left to go. |
Violette is chip leader going into final table today - 5K Pot-Limit Hold'em.

Is there any reason I'm not on the list? |
Um ... oops? Sorry about that.
Updated list includes Naiwf, and the results that are in from the 5K No-Limit tourney (as of now Devilfish, Raymer, and Minh Nguyen still in the final 24). Timmy - 1182.933 Lathum - 688.320 Chubby - 687.020 Hoops - 681.268 Honolulu - 388.890 LionKing - 384.193 QuikSand - 375.340 Naiwf - 334.335 Larry - 312.905 SirFozzie - 107.585 |
Final Table and Chip counts for event 22 $1500 No Limit Hold 'Em:
1 Greg Raymer $ 613,000 2 Peter Lee $ 461,000 3 Minh Nguyen $ 378,000 4 Devilfish Uliott $ 338,000 5 Steve Rassi $ 325,000 6 Mark Seif $ 305,000 7 James Carter $ 263,000 8 Bill Gazes $ 181,000 9 Webber Kang $ 166,000 They'll finish tomorrow. |
Will this satisfy the "Raymer is a fluke" segment?
|
Last night I read that the $1500 NLHE event that Raymer is currently leading will have a $600k payout for first. That could change our pool quite significantly. Raymer is in good shape. Thankfully, I have Minh Nguyen who will also be at the final table.
|
Woot. I have two final tablers in this one. Nguyen and Devilfish :)
|
Good table to start a comeback, Fozzie. Pretty big payouts in this tourney, thanks to the 2,000 entries.
Devilfish finishes 9th for $47,225. |
6 left in event #22. Here are the chip counts:
1 Peter Lee $ 716,000 2 Minh Nguyen $ 688,000 3 Mark Seif $ 508,000 4 Greg Raymer $ 483,000 5 Bill Gazes $ 321,000 6 Webber Kang $ 311,000 Here are the payouts for the top 6 spots. People with Raymer and Minh Nguyen should do pretty well in this one. I don't know if anyone has Mark Seif, and I don't know any of the others. 1 $611,145 2 $329,975 3 $202,790 4 $175,010 5 $147,230 6 $119,450 |
Saw something interesting on the David Williams blog about Ivey:
Quote:
I know a few of us have Ivey - obviously this is not going to help the cause ... |
Down goes Raymer. He finished 6th for $119,450. Minh Nguyen is second in chips right now. I think a few of us have him.
|
Mark Seif won the $611,145 prize for event 22. I don't think anyone has him. Minh Nguyen took second for $329,975.
Joe Awada made the final table in event 23 ($5000 7 card stud) if anyone has him. They are into the money for event 24 ($2500 NLHE). There are about 95 people left. I assume we have a few in there, but the only one I'm sure is still alive is John Juanda who is doing well. |
No one with Seif, who now has two bracelets. No one with Awada, either.
With 62 left in Event 24 Huck Seed has the 4th biggest stack (95k), Juanda is 9th (70k). I believe those are the only guys we collectively have that are remaining. |
Timmy is killing everyone in this game so far ...
Timmy - 1507.298 Lathum - 685.070 Chubby - 679.465 Hoopsguy - 676.738 SirFozzie - 493.060 (big jump up) Naiwf - 443.680 LionKing - 381.828 QuikSand - 371.405 HonoluluBlue - 318.005 Larrymcg - 307.760 Just a heads up ... found an error in my formulas for totaling the points between the last posting and this one. So a couple of totals are actually down from where they were last time out. Sorry for any confusion. |
Not sure if anyone has him, bu Chip Jett has the chiplead in the $5000 7 card stud. I would love to see him win, I've always liked him. And his wife is pretty hot.
|
Hell yes, that bitch is fine.
|
They're down to 3 in event 25. 2 are guys that I think some of us have.
1 Johnny Chan $ 635,000 2 Phil Laak $ 265,000 3 Richard Osborne $ 160,000 The winner will get $303k. |
Dola- It'd be Chan's 10th bracelet if he wins.
|
It is down to head's up between Laak and Chan now. Chan would be the first ever to 10 bracelets. (He, Doyle and Hellmuth are tied at 9.)
Another person that looks like she might get a bracelet in the lady's only tournament? Jennifer Tilly. She is the chip leader and they're down to 7. |
He did it. Bracelet number ten plus $303,025. It looks like only one person in the pool even has him. Congrats Chubby.
|
YEAH! Chan comes through for me!
|
Congrats, Johnny Chan!
|
dola
Thanks to hoopsguy for doing the totals for us. |
Down to 2 people in Ladies No Limit. Jennifer Tilly is still alive. Anyone got chip counts?
|
No problem. At some point I will take ten minutes to subtract out the points from the early tournaments from Honolulu and Timmy, but I don't think it is making any real impact on the standings at this point.
Actually was in a sit-n-go for about six hands at Absolute Poker with Lathum before I pushed myself out in the first stage on a three-man all-in. Really poorly played on my part - hoping my picks do better than I did in that one. |
tilly won
|
Finally some good news for the people that picked Phil Ivey - he is playing and doing well in event 27 ($5000 Pot Limit Omaha), along with several others on our list. They're down to about 25 people. Doyle, Hellmuth and Ivey are in the top ten (and also at the same table).
Only the top 9 get paid. In event 28 ($5000 Limit Hold 'Em), there are several of our other guys competing. No real news except that Negreanu is already out. |
Negreanu and D'Agostino (sp?) - can anyone think of another guy that has paid out more and won less than these two?
|
Negreanu has been terrible so far this year.
Doyle got knocked out in #27, but Ivey and Hellmuth are still among the top ten. I don't know if anyone has Toto Leonidas but he is up there, too. |
No one with Toto. He and Seif are guys that would have accumulated a lot of points so far.
|
Even better news for the guys that have Ivey. He is pulling away as the chip leader. These are the stacks from a few minutes ago. He has busted Toto since then, so he has even more.
1 Phil Ivey $ 300,000 2 Ram Vaswani $ 230,000 3 E.C. Cohen $ 210,000 4 Avi Freedman $ 175,000 5 Phil Hellmuth $ 160,000 6 Allen Cunningham $ 140,000 7 Davood Mehrmand $ 110,000 8 Toto Leonidas $ 100,000 9 Robert Williamson III $ 100,000 10 Richard St. Peter $ 70,000 11 Eddy Scharf $ 70,000 12 Sigi Stockinger $ 50,000 13 Tony G $ 40,000 14 Surinder Sunar $ 40,000 15 Edgar Skjervold $ 35,000 |
Update on 27: They're down to 3. Ivey is currently 2nd in chips. He is guarenteed at least $194k. Here are the payouts for the top 3:
1 $635,603 2 $353,115 3 $194,210 Hellmuth finished 8th for $70,075. I think that covers all our guys. Devilfish is doing real well in event 29. He's the current chip-leader, and there are about 100 people left. They're into the money in 28 and a few of our people are still around like Annie Duke, Amir Vahedi and Men the master. Also Mr. Kotter himself, Gabe Kaplan. They are down to about 25. First place will be $404k for this event. |
ESPN is probably loving this WSOP. They've got some really good stuff to showcase so far: Johnny Chan winning his 10th (over Phil Laak), TJ Cloutier winning, Arieh beating Ferguson, Jennifer Tilly winning, Seidel beating Violette, and perhaps a Phil Ivey win (on a final table with Hellmuth).

Ivey won. That makes 5 bracelets for him already. The $635,603 should affect our pool significantly.
Annie Duke made the final table in event 28. Jesus won $3450 in event 29 and Devilfish is still going strong. Not sure who else if anyone else we have is left in that one. |
Ivey win has a major impact on our standings. Duke is 2nd in chips going into final table. Down to 45 in the no-limit event and Greenstein is faring well with Devilfish hanging around.
Chubby - 1613.175 Timmy - 1581.373 Hoops - 1328.458 Naiwf - 1148.440 Quik - 1095.895 Larry - 950.590 Lathum - 696.105 Fozzie - 578.855 Honolulu - 411.630 LK - 403.288 |
LIEBERT, HANSEN, HELLMUTH TRADED FOR TILLY, KAPLAN, INTERNET QUALIFIER TO BE NAMED LATER
MICHIGAN (API) - FOFC Poker Pool laggard Honolulu Blue announced a blockbuster trade, sending three noted poker pros to the rail for two celebrities and an unknown TBD. "I had to do something to shake up the team," said Blue. "We were simply not performing up to standards, and every day we fall farther and farther behind the leaders. Well, actually, we fall further behind everyone, but never mind." "I have nothing against the players who are no longer on the team. I wish them well. I just think the new players will add more to the club." Tilly is best known for three things - her Oscar nomination, those silly Chucky movies, and her rack. Kaplan is best known for playing Mr. Kotter on "Welcome Back Kotter," which was off the air before most of the current FOFCers were born. Blue is currently scouting PokerStars for the next WSOP champion. A few of the standout prospects are "RiverKing", "PoizinIvey", and "ACEKraker". |
Ivey got me back into the mix! He's always been my favorite player, and this just confirms it.
|
into the lead and I have Duke too
|
Very funny stuff, Honolulu.
Here is a hand that I found a little puzzling - Quote:
I'm wondering how a guy decides that this is the place to go in for his tournament life? He has 50k in chips, with blinds at 1200/2400 and 300 ante. Sure, there is a lot of money in the pot and he is getting 3-1 (assuming BG pushed 50k into 100k pot) on his call, but he got his best case scenario and ends up calling as a 57/43 dog. I would understand if he pushed hoping for a fold, but calling there seems terrible. Obligatory disclosure - I have Greenstein as one of my players. |
It's not a bad call at all. In fact, it reminded me of the Moneymaker/Boyd hand from a couple years ago, which people wrongly criticized Moneymaker for. If you correctly put the read on the guy (I don't know abut this specific hand, but Money clearly did) then you have a strong advantage. Barry was in a better position here than Boyd because he had a flush draw, but it's still not a bad call if you put the guy on overcards at that point.
Quote:
|
I think I may be fuzzy on the details of the Moneymaker/Boyd hand - I thought that call was pre-flop, when Moneymaker thought non-pair and was a slight favorite. In this case the guy is calling a bet to go in at 43%.
I'll go at this a little differently - would this be a call you would make if you knew you were going to win 43% of the time? There is very little chance he doesn't have two overs no matter what the flush draw is (2 hearts is possible). So here is how this one looks to me: 1.) He has a pocket pair higher than deuces 2.) He has a flush draw 3.) He hit a pair on the flop that is higher than deuces In any of these cases the chances of winning are no greater than 43%. 4.) He has overcards and now has six outs. Advantage caller. I think it takes a TON of moxie to make this call. But I'm curious if I'm the only one that sees it this way. There would be no discussion coming from me if he had pushed with his underpair. |
