worst logo ever?

I'm not a hockey fan, so this is the first time I've seen it. But how can a professional sports franchise possibly think this logo was even remotely good?

SackAttack 11-14-2005 02:36 AM

Well, come on. They're the Canucks. It's not like the nickname gave them a lot to work with.

Zippo 11-14-2005 02:44 AM

what's wrong with it? I like it.

Zippo 11-14-2005 02:47 AM

maybe you just need a bigger version:

JeffR 11-14-2005 04:44 AM

It's not even the worst Indian-art inspired logo in the NHL:

http://www.highlandmint.com/ProductP...YOTES_LOGO.jpg

Pumpy Tudors 11-14-2005 08:14 AM

Oh, please. The worst NHL logo in the past 20 years has to be that Gorton's fisherman thing that the Islanders used. :)

sachmo71 11-14-2005 08:16 AM

Someone bust out that 80's Blues jersey with the trumpets on it.

Shepp 11-14-2005 10:53 AM

It looks like they had a contest for the fans to design a logo and some 11 year old won.

AlexB 11-14-2005 12:20 PM

Not a sports logo, but the worst logo ever has to be the old English motorway service restaurants 'Happy Eater': a pac-man with it's finger down its throat to try and puke up the atrocities they served...

rkmsuf 11-14-2005 12:24 PM

worst.logo.ever.

sovereignstar 11-14-2005 12:25 PM

There ain't shit wrong with that logo. Might not be your style, but it's technically sound.

No. For someone to toss out the idea that a 10-year old could design that is pretty ludicrous. Pretty fair insult to the design industry.

You have to admit the logo is really ugly. Not really the fault of the designer, since he's just translating the vision from the team, but still ugly.

This seems to be getting way too serious now.

It is a pretty shitty logo. I'm sure its technically sound (no way a 10 yr old could do it) but that doesn't mean its a good logo.

Maybe I'm thinking too much here, but I had pretty much accepted that the whole "11 year old" thing was a conscious exaggeration.

Ksyrup 11-14-2005 01:03 PM

I'm trying hard to figure out what it is. First impression - the Rolling Stone Tongue, which has been cut out and placed on a pedestal on someone's mantle. Which would explain why it is black.

That's actually very similar [edit: ok, not very in implementation, but similar in thought] to the clip-artish logo I borrowed for Telluride, but more stylized. Is it a women's football logo (one would be surprised at the logos some of these teams have, there seems to be a bit of investment there)?

cuervo72 11-14-2005 01:17 PM

Dola - and style-wise, I would object to the white outline around the front/top of the hat, as it doesn't appear anywhere else in the logo. For that matter, the white only appears in the had and not the handkerchief or anywhere else...

what hat? what hankerchief? is that what that is?

sovereignstar 11-14-2005 01:20 PM

That logo was designed by Paul Yuan (the guy who works with Gary on TPB). I'm not sure if a team can claim it as their own or if it was made just for his portfolio.

I really like his work though and I'll PM you a link to his site if you want it.

Edit: Thinking about it some more, I bet that one is for the San Antonio team in TPB, duh.

Desnudo 11-14-2005 01:20 PM

I thought it was a killer whale surfing a wave.

MikeVic 11-14-2005 01:27 PM

Is it some outlaw cowboy guy?

JeffR 11-14-2005 01:28 PM

The Canucks logo is really a pretty obscure reference to anybody who's not familiar with local native artwork. It's a fairly literal representation of how the coastal Indians depict killer whales:

http://www3.telus.net/Coast_Salish_Journey/ernorca.jpg

What a killer whale has to do with the name "Canucks" is another question entirely.

sovereignstar 11-14-2005 01:32 PM

I figured most guys knew a little about Northwest Indian art with the Seahawks logo and all. But you might be right.

dawgfan 11-14-2005 01:38 PM

The sample posted by sov is a bad logo - it just doesn't read very well. Too stylized, and as proven by multiple responses, most people can't figure out what it's supposed to represent.

The Canucks logo is bad as well - it's too busy, trying to do too much. The PNW native american artwork part is fine, but unlike the Seahawks logo which is clear and unfettered with any cleverness, this one tries to tie the whale in with the "C" and the idea it's "breaking out". There are too many colors, too much distraction in the overall lines of the artwork and it just doesn't read well at a small size.

Yeah, we may be 2-0, but we don't have the talent to maintain that. We'll be lucky to keep it within 14 points by the end of the game.

That said, I think we might surprise a bit this year. Hickman finally learned some good formations, and Markel knows most of them as well. That gives us quite a bit of options. Either way, it is better than the ones I had to work with last year!

Maple Leafs 11-14-2005 02:05 PM

Bad. It took me far too long to figure out what it as. It looks like the grim reaper kind of flailing his arm and leg around at first. It took me at least 10 seconds to get the "Outlaw" looking type.

I've been on the fence about the Canucks logo for some time. I can see both sides of the argument.

Glengoyne 11-14-2005 02:25 PM

I'm not a professional designer, by any stretch of the imagination, nor even an amateur, but that seems to be among the worst high profile logos I've ever seen.

It may not look, to a professional, like a ten year old could have done it. But for all of its professional glory it falls flat. It is overly detailed, and the details are small. I don't know if that is two criticisms or one. It is very busy, and what is with the broken top of the "C"? Does this logo have a message beyond "Cannucks"? If it does, I'd suggest that that message is cloudy at best.

So to a lay person this certainly looks like, maybe not a 10 year old, but a Jr. higher could have put it together.

Raiders Army 11-14-2005 02:29 PM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' old logo was pretty bad.

Glengoyne 11-14-2005 02:30 PM

As for the "test" logo.

Bad Logo. Too stylized. You really can't identify what it is. Perhaps with the associated name, it would make more sense.

At first I thought it might be an animated "A", throwing something, albeit with a towel wrapped around its waist.

Once someone said "hat", I thought it might be a blind-folded bird wearing a cowboy hat.

Ksyrup 11-14-2005 02:38 PM

I don't see a hat. Unless it's modeled after Donald Duck's hat.

Canucks logo = ugh
Arlington Pediatric logo = decent...not my style...not what I would have done with it, but decent.
Islanders logo = meh
sov's mystery logo = ugh. I haven't a clue what it was supposed to be. My first thought was some kind of shark or killer whale.

And I agree with cuervo, some of those women's pro football league logos are better than some of the newer stuff in the NFL.

The "test" logo reminds me an awful lot of the Ottawa Renegades logo, which I also think is bad:

My personal opinion is that if I have to struggle to comprehend a logo from a distance, it's too complicated. Just because a logo is a neat picture doesn't mean it's a good logo, they don't go hand-in-hand. My favorite logos, while somewhat boring, are almost always the "stylized letter" variety, like the NY Giants or GB Packers or whatever.

I live 30 minutes south of Vancouver and know all about the native artwork and everything else around here. It's still an unbelievably awful logo. But I guess it fits my feelings of the team.

Actually, my sister is a Carolina alum and she hates the ram addition to the NC logo. She prefers the more vanilla plain NC look.

Also that second UNC logo is just a knock-off of the Struttin' Wolf (which itself may or may not be a ripoff of I think Bucky the Badger doing the similar strut).

I also think the Ducks thing is horrible. People should have started selling off Disney stock after what Disney decided to do when they got their NHL franchise and named it after a kids movie. What's more they decided to be stupidly unconventional with the name since they are officially, "The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim", rather than the "Anaheim Mighty Ducks". Either way, it's crap.

A few month ago I watched a special on 20/20 or Nightline, I don't remember which. In the segment they took peices of art from a kindergarden finger painting class and displayed it at a moder art show. Next, they brought in local art critics to pick out the "professional" stuff from the "ametuer" stuff. None of the experts picked them all out, if I remember correctly the rate was about 50/50. My point is, that the critics always pointed out specific syles that the artis used and in essence how "technically sound" the paintings where. Even when they were created by a five year old.
