Board Upgrade - Report Issues Here
I plan to upgrade the FOFC message board software to the latest version of vBulletin on Saturday Morning (Eastern Time).
The board will be offline while the upgrade is happening. If there are any unforseen problems, I will post details at Skydog's forum and the front page of this site. Most of the forum styles will be unavailable for a short time until we can reimport them into the new software. EDIT - http://www.benelou.com/cgi-bin/ikonb...gi?;act=SF;f=2 is the address of Skydog's forum |

Among other things, this upgrade should get rid of the extraneous characters when cutting and pasting from Microsoft Word. :) |

That is excellent news :) |
Users may have trouble logging in after the upgrade but I will try to resolve that as quickly as possible.
|
Upgrade complete.

the new style is strange...info along the top instead of on the side. is that editable in our CP?
|
DOLA:
I DO like the quick reply options. I guess the top info bar on each post isn't that bad, just something to get used to. |
Quote:
Yes. |
Sweet, now the thread list doesn't jump to the top everytime you go back, it remembers where you were. I can now surf the 1st page 23% faster.

The board seems faster now. Maybe it just because there isnt much traffic yet...
|
Thanks for the hard work, Ryan :)

I will look into it. |

The board is moving much faster for me as well. |

You might ask Simms, I remember this happening with FOBL the last upgrade. |
Quote:
That was my plan :) |
Ryan, post details are on top now, though in User CP options I have placed it on the left. Is there something new or different I have to do to get poster details on the left?
|
Quote:
Boooo! I liked having it kick the replied to threads back to the top... |
Quote:
Fixed. If you prefered the other style (details on top), it will be back as an option soon. |
Thank you, Ryan... :)
|
Rock on :)

So did I. Now I have to reload to see which threads I've checked and haven't been updated (sometimes I will read a thread, hit back, and it will have been replied to again already), to refresh the list, etc. The other way was very convenient. |
I see nothing new.
Oh wait, I do now. ;) |
Hmmm. I have my WYSIWYG editor on, but when I hit "enter" to create a line break it does not show in my post. There shuold be two line in between this sentence and the last.
|
And now it works.
This is odd. |
Quote:
Just FYI, but I am still not getting details on top. Mine is set to top, but they are on the side |
I REALLY like some of the new features...
...now if only we could get the smileys fixed. |

Well, that sucks. The editor tools don't work in Firefox, which means to use them, I have to switch to IE (where the ads bombard me).
This was worth losing part of a Saturday for? :p |
Dola,
It's also interesting that a different set of smilies displays based on the browser I'm using (the classic tongue smiley in Firefox, the crappy pink one in IE). Cache issue? |
I get the crappy new smilies in Firefox, so that might indeed be a cache issue.
|
Dola-
Editor tools seem too work fine for me in Firefox as well... |
Not here. I activated them in Firefox and they wouldn't work, but when I went over to IE they worked fine.
|
Are you using WYSIWYG or the default editor?
|
Thank you for all your work for us, Ryan. :)
|
Quote:
they don't fix grammer, eh? |
The editor tools work when you allow gamespy scripts to be run.

This board update is great :D. I especially like the edit feature now (and no, I'm not being mean to jbmagic). And things are far faster. Well done!

[bitching] I've seen some of the good old blurrrrrrring going on when I was trying to scroll down pages before everything was loaded. [/bitching]
|
Quote:
Same here. it's set to top but is on the left. |
Top/Left can be set globally in the admin panel, but it applies to everybody. To make it a user-level option requires additional hacking, which has not yet been fully implemented. I think Ryan's planning to work on that.
|
Where are my line feeds. I'm entering white space between these lines, and it keeps on disappearing. I want my whitespace back!!
|
I'm now wondering If the whitespace will appear if I Go Advanced!
|
Dola, Nope! Now I've given up the use of punctuation and paragraphs. SincetheboardisjammingmywordstogethermaybeI'lljuststopusingpunctuationandwhitespacealltogether.

For any issues with WYSIWYG, QuickReply, or other javascript/ajax-based function, the first order of business should be to do a hard-refresh (ctrl+F5) and clear your cache.
The js and xml files were *heavily* modified between vb3 and vb3.5, and if your computer is picking up any of the old code, it could cause myriad problems. |

I have an issue, though I am not sure it's related to the upgrade. I can't stop getting email notifications everytime someone posts in a thread I've posted in. I went to the "CP" controls and turned off the notification, but I keep getting them. They wont stop.
Suggestions? |
Check if those threads are showing up in your subscription list. They would be separate from the global notification option.
If not, I'm not sure what the problem is. |
Quote:
They are. Some have "Instant" under the Notification column and some have "None." How do I make the Instant into None? I think that would solve the problem. I always liked Doug Gilmour. |
Check the box next to the threads you want to chance and in the dropdown below (where it says "Selected Threads:"), you can change the notification type.

Excellent. Thanks for the help! |
So I was trying to find a theme I wanted since I don't like how MacOS looks now and I now cannot change it from rage. This scheme is awful and is driving me batty.

The new smilie package certainly adds a Maximum Football Forum feel to the atmosphere.
:banghead: |
When I tried to use the quick search function, I got the following message:
Quote:
|
Is anyone else having really long page load times? Since the switchover, it usually takes about 30 to 45 seconds for a page to load for me (and then it displays all at once). I am using the Sideline skin, FWIW.
|
My load times are actually quicker, especially now that the smilie issue has been settled.
|
Yup. Everything has been superfast for me...
|
I tried switching skins - that didn't work.
It's very strange. Since the upgrade, I've had consistently slow loading times (and I wouldn't be surprised to find out the pages take the same load time each time). The pages always load (unlike past board problems). And once they appear, they appear all at once. It really is making the board unworkable for me. I open a page, go read an article on another website, then go to the next page in a thread, read another article, etc. It takes way too much time. Is anyone else having this sort of problem? |
Ideally, all skins other than the default should be disabled until they can be rebuilt post-upgrade.
All the skins are made up of a collection of templates, many of which contain javascript and other code that may or may not be fully compatible with the new version of vB. It's very possible (I'd say even likely) that the "dirty" code now present in the older skins is causing any slowdowns you may be experiencing. Did you try the default skin specifically? Or just the other alternates? |
All the skins appear to be working for me at the normal speeds.
|
One issue I have discovered. On Rage you cannot go down to the bottom left drop down skin menu and change to another skin.
|
I switched to default skin (from Sideline) and it acts in the same manner. It seems skin-unrelated.
|
JG, I'm no techie, but I guess something to do with cookies, or adware, or something like that.
|
Quote:
Well, I'm a government computer, so my cookies are constantly purged and I have absolutely no adware or spyware. I don't have a problem with any other website but this one (and only since the upgrade). It's very strange. As soon as I click on a link, it immediately goes to the proper page, but takes 30-45 seconds to load and then it appears all at once. I'm wondering if it has something to do with using not-the-most-up-to-date version of IE. It's not totally out of date, but we are usually well behind with upgrades. Unfortunately, I don't have access to upgrading IE or otherwise changing the configuration of it. |
I use firefox.

Quote:
Well that would suck. I might have to give up FOFC until I'm done with this job if that's the case. I have to think there are other members here who aren't good at upgrading IE who might have a similar problem. |
Quote:
Can you run Firefox? I believe there was a way to load that browser on a USB drive and run it from there - handy, especially if your're surfing from multiple computers (and want to keep your bookmarks), or a locked-down machine that you can't install on. |
I can't seem to run Firefox on my work computer (although I do use it at home). My home computer works fine with the update, but my work computer is just sucking. I guess I probably won't be posting much (since I do almost all of my posting from work) until my job here ends in August. Oh well. See you all around.

Time Stamp Bug, again, this time in the Vanilla Coke thread: http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/...ad.php?t=48218
|
Anybody else having this problem?
I just noticed it tonight (3/21/06, 9 p.m. ET), that when I click on the little button to "go to newest messages" and IF I get one of the click-through interstitial ads, it doesn't show me the newest message, but starts me at the beginning of the thread. Not a deal breaker for coming here, but certainly inconvenient and something that didn't used to be broke. /tk |

Feel free to borrow the word "again" from my post ;) |
For whatever reason my problem has been fixed over the last couple days. To whoever did it, thanks.
|
Ok, I thought this would go away, but its not.
Every now and then, not every time, but often enough to really cramp things up for me. When I try to click on the links at the top I get a blank white page, with no source code, nothing. I can't back up and get to anything, I can't go to the editors, nada. Links just turn into crap white sheets. Is there a fix for this or what? I've already trie the CTRL- F5 thing, no go. I still get blank pages very often. I'm using firefox. Never had any problems before this update took place. HELP! |

Just happened in the "Thou Shalt Not Kill Thread"...
http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/...ad.php?t=48480 -- I respond to st.cronin's post #15 with my post #17 -- It takes me a couple minutes for me to post, but afterwards I notice that his post (#15) is now listed after my post -- st.cronin posts again, and his old post is bumped back to its old spot before mine, with his new post (#18) taking it's place |
