Law and Order: Dennis Farina quits.

I read this in today's McPaper. That stinks - He was real good in that role. Tough filling the shoes of Jerry Orbach, but he did a fantastic job.

So this begs the question, who would be a great detective on L&O?

My choices:

David Duchovny
Ed O'Neill
The guy who played Aaron Pierce on 24

Fonzie 06-01-2006 12:58 PM

Mike Ditka

IMetTrentGreen 06-01-2006 12:59 PM

Why did he quit?

VPI97 06-01-2006 01:00 PM

They should put Chris Noth back on the flagship show.

wade moore 06-01-2006 01:04 PM

They've always had success with guys i've never heard of...

BrianD 06-01-2006 01:09 PM

R. Lee Ermey could be fun. :)

Swaggs 06-01-2006 01:20 PM

Would it be weird to see Dennis Franz as someone other than Andy Sipowicz (sp?)?

I think Chi McBride from Boston Public could be pretty good.

I always liked Andre Braugher, too. But since Homicide and Law and Order crossed over, I don't know how that would work.

I'd love it if Andre Braugher came on, good idea...

I recorded "Thief" on FX just because he was on it... wasn't too bad, but since after like 6 episodes i'm not seeing it, it must have been cancelled..

Anyway, with him being on Homicide, they could easily make him a transfer from Baltimore.. I don't see where that's a problem at all...

wade moore 06-01-2006 02:11 PM

Dola:

Duh, now that I think about it... The character "Munch" was on Homicide and is now on Law & Order: SVU, so there's even a precedent.

Heh - I had wondered about another cast member from The John Larroquette show...John Larroquette! But here I find out he's already playing an ex-cop turned attorney (on Hallmark) named...McBride!

stevew 06-01-2006 02:16 PM

Braugher was always the man on homicide.

True, and he's a good character.. but I think Homicide and SVU are the only places where he's had a consistent role?

Salvation. I have a deep hatred of the series. Mainly because it's on every channel, 24 hours a day, and that stupid noise.

So hypothetically, if you were getting ready to hit on a hot chick, and then you hear her phone ring, but it's the law and order noise.....you just keep walking?

they didn't? well, guess I can delete the few I haven't seen yet. I really didn't like it all that much, but when I saw there were only a few episodes left, I figured I'd muck through. but if they didn't finish it, I'm not going to bother.

I especially enjoyed how they put major spoilers in the show description, which I always ended up stumbling across when I went to record the show.

It wasn't the best show out there, but I thought it was pretty solid...

However, I can see why it didn't catch on, especially being on FX...

sabotai 06-01-2006 02:54 PM

I actually thought Theif was really good for the first episode or two. Just kind of fell completely flat after that, for some reason.

just didn't seem very consistent with me. these guys are all like the epitome of careful, professional bank robbers. they don't do jobs close to home, they don't interact with each other outside of the jobs. a great deal of mention is made about how they focus on the details

so, they pull of the first job...and throw all of that out the window. they steal stuff they weren't supposed to. they get made. they all follow Andre home. and then, suddenly, they have money problems and need to pull of this huge complicated heist with zero prep. in like 3 episodes they went from they guys from Heat to the Keystone Kops.

plus, Linda Hamilton is like 90 years old now. :(

Well if they want a TV show, there has to be some sort of conflict usually.

Yeah, and my impression is that it was money woes...

but i guess your point is how do these lifelong criminals all of a sudden have major money woes at the same time?

Swaggs 06-01-2006 03:17 PM

I forgot that Munch started out on Homicide.

I wasn't sure if Braugher died at the end of Homicide or not. I am thinking that I remember the Baldwin brother that was on it dying, but can't remember if that was in the finale.

Joe 06-01-2006 05:39 PM

they should move Ice-T to L&O. He doesn't get enough time on SVU.

Was talking about this with the little woman and brought up the Andre Brougher possibility...

She made a good point... I see little chance that they make it so both of the detectives are black males... It just doesn't seem like something they would do...

RPI-Fan 06-01-2006 06:55 PM

I HATED Dennis Farina on L&O. In fact I've watched hardly any of the series since he started, and if they replace him with someone good I'll watch a lot, once again.

He was way too over-the-top for me.

Umm... wouldn't she come in as the ADA to replace the one that was killed, not to replace Farina? These shows were "linked" in that they were part of the same DA office, so I don't see how she comes in as a cop...

Either way, meh... I REALLY disliked her character and her on Conviction.

Either way, I don't like the move, because as I said I just didn't like her at all on Conviction...

She is moving from ADA to detective? That is logical.

Ed O'Neill would make me watch.

stevew 06-02-2006 02:32 PM

They should have had him say "Fuck you, fuckball" more often. Farina doesnt really work in a tame environment.

Eaglesfan27 06-02-2006 03:09 PM

I would think that she will be playing a totally different character. Now, whether I can forget her performance as an ADA and believe that she is a police officer remains to be seen. I do know that I think she is hot, so that counts for something.

Toddzilla 06-02-2006 03:28 PM

If any show has a history of forgetting past-appearances by actors, it's law and order. I think everyone in the show at one point or another played a perp or a defense attorney.

Very true. My dad, who has seemingly seen every episode of each installment always calls out recycled actors when I watch this show with him.

RPI-Fan 06-02-2006 07:33 PM

I think she'll be good in the role of detective -- I'm certainly more likely to watch with her than with Farina.

But really, Conviction and Law & Order weren't connected at all. They only shared one character in common, who was absolutely nothing like she was on SVU, so similar there in name only.

Well, and her boss was the main DA who is common to all of the Law & Order shows...

Joe 06-02-2006 09:22 PM

never saw the boss. Probably I would've paid more attention if it was a better show.

Joe 06-02-2006 09:48 PM

I looked it up and Fred Thompson only appeared on the pilot. So it wasnt like he was a big part of the show.

M GO BLUE!!! 06-02-2006 11:14 PM

Still, this only shows why they should rename it Law & Order: Political Correctness Unit

They need to blow the whole show up. Get rid of the writers, Green, Van Buren... everybody except that cute thing that brings in files every episode. Then look at what made the show damn good in the first place.

Canceled?!? It ended with what actually looked like a season finale. I thought it was weird to run it only six or eight episodes, but I figured they were using it to segue between the Shield and Rescue Me.

Hmm.

Agree on both accounts. Ed O'Neill never gets the credit for his acting that he deserves because everyone sees Al Bundy.

Duchovny, well, you know, it's amazing that the chemistry between him and Gillian Anderson was so good and worked so well on The X-Files because neither one of them can act worth a lick. Chris Carter was just lucky/good enough to find people perfect for the role for his show but couldn't do anything else.

SI

JonInMiddleGA 06-12-2006 12:03 AM

re: Dragnet with Ed O'Neill

I just stumbled across it on The Sleuth Channel, a new network launched by NBC Universal. They've got it on the schedule 9pm Sundays, with re-airing at midnight (Eastern Time).

Looks like availability is pretty sparse, only 5 million households right now, but I know it's on Dish Network, not sure who else might be available to get it.

I've heard that they filmed two endings, one for if they were renewed and one for if they were cancelled. The one that aired was the if cancelled ending. I mean the finale that aired did give it a crime doesn't pay kind of feeling.
