PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was injured in a motorcycle accident on Monday morning.

The Steelers confirmed the accident for Channel 4 Action News.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review said the accident happened on Second Avenue near the 10th Street Bridge.

A witness told Channel 4 Action News that Roethlisberger went over the handlebars, hit the windshield of another vehicle and then hit the ground.

Roethlisberger was not wearing a helmet, according to the paper.

Police have closed down the bridge, Second Avenue and the Armstrong Tunnels.

Roethlisberger was taken to Mercy Hospital. There is no word on the extent of his injuries.

I remember reading something about how the Steeler had asked him to stop riding the bike and he refused.

This was back when the "Ben has a huge ego and isn't a team player" stories were going around last year.

As with pretty much everything in life, it all depends. A helmet, along with other protective gear, for the mostt part will make a huge difference in the injuries you suffer. I dont know anything about what happened to Big Ben here, but lets say he did go head first through the windshield, a helmet could have been a difference maker between life and death, it wont however, help you avoid neck injuries, at least not in any of my experiences riding.

I honestly dont understand how someone can ride w.o a helmet, doesnt make much sense to me.

Yeah, with the way that motorists can totally ignore bikes on the road, I think that riding one is not a good idea generally.

Ditto. Contrary to urban legends, a helmet can't hurt you. And there will be times when a helmet still won't be enough. But it sure can turn a major head trauma into a minor injury.

I'm all for enjoy life and all that jazz, but personally my life is too valuable to me to take part in high risk activities. And while I'm not a franchise quarterback, I appreciate the committments to my family enough not to risk myself unnecessarily. There are enough bad things that can happen to you on a football field to ruin your career and livelihood, I don't know why you'd compound that by riding a motorcycle without a helmet.

I think this case underscores that any more -- I'd be less worried about what Ben might do on a motorcycle, but more worried about what someone else will do when he's on a motorcycle, as it sounds like is the case here.

And the way that most motorcyclists completely disregard the rules of the road.

He didn't say Ben did. He said most motorcyclists do. That has been my experience as well, whether it be riding between cars when their isn't a lane there, riding on the shoulder, or doing other things that are stupid.

I just bought a protective jacket for riding this weekend, sure if I hit someone at 75 mph, I'm probably dead, but it just might save my life too. A helmet should be MANDENTORY in all states. If not, ride at your own risk and sign a waiver.

thing is, that kind of accident could have easily happened with a car cutting another car in a moment of distraction and that would only have resulted in crushed steel and scratched paint.

I think I have had times when motorcyclists have tried to *beat* me to the left while stopped to make a turn (but then, I'd had a *car* try to do this too).

Generally though, I would say that many drivers are oblivious to bikes on the road (I don't ride one, but about every other male in my and my wife's family has).

i believe he was speaking in generalities, not this specific situation, and I agree with him. Yes, motorists should pay more attention, as bikes are harder to see. But guys who ride between lanes, pop-wheelies, make illegal turns and dart between cars, do not help the situation. in general. :)

There are many cyclists who follow the rules of the road. I have no problem with them.

That said, I'd say the ratio of cars to motorcycles I see on the road I'm sure is greater than 1,000 to 1 -- could be 10,000 to one. I'll bet I could count on one hand the number of times I've seen a car pass on the shoulder of a highway, as an example

But I'd say a half dozen times a year I see a dumbass on a motorcycle pass in between cars driving alongside one another on the highway. There's a stretch of interstate by my house where during the last year I've seen somebody popping wheelies a half dozen times. There are morons in every walk of life, but for some reason motorcyclists account for more than their fair share.

The only reason I've heard that bikers won't wear helmets is that most bikers would rather die without a helmet rather than be paralyzed with a helmet on.

I've always been a supporter of helmet lies, with one caveat -- if you want to do away with helmet laws, we do away with all protections for you. You need to pay a higher insurance rate that covers you not wearing a helmet, and if your insurance doesn't cover you not wearing a helmet then you need to liquidate your assets before you get one dime of Medicaid. I dislike that the rest of us with commonsense are consistently subsizing the galactically stupid.

I have a Yamaha R6 and I always get that look and stare from motorists who have seen something similar and an idiot attached to it who weave in and out of traffic and go so damn fast, you don't see them in your rear view mirror until they are about to pass you. Most of those types also have temp tags for some reason.

It's too bad, I've taken the safety course and I just love the crotch rocket style of bikes... I'm extremely safe consious.

My father was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident when I was 19. He'd probably be dead if he wasn't wearing a helmet. As it was, he was in the hospital for two months, then at home recuperating for another four before he could even go back to work.

Sometimes, a helmet isn't enough. My uncle was a motorcycle cop who was killed in an accident while on duty pursuing a car.

I'll never ride one.

Texas has no helmet law. I choose to wear mine. I value my brain just a little more than having the wind blow through my hair.

I had an accident in 94 where I hit a rather large pothole, went into a high speed wobble and rolled with my bike about 100 yards across pavement into a ditch and up against a barbed wire fence. I know if I didn't have my helmet on then it would have been a very ugly scene as my head bounced off the pavement and ground several times as my body rolled along. Sky, ground, sky, ground, sky, ground, sky is all that I saw as it was happening. I love my helmet.

That said, stupid move Ben, hope you are O.K.

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is undergoing surgery after a motorcycle accident on Monday morning, doctors at Mercy Hospital said.

Roethlisberger is in serious but stable condition, according to Dr. Larry Jones.

According to a police source, Roethlisberger suffered a broken jaw, broke his left sinus cavity, suffered a 9-inch laceration to the back of his head, lost many teeth and has severe injuries to his knees from hitting the pavement.

A plastic surgeon has been called in, the source said.

Severe injuries to his knees? Ouch.

Hopefully it's just severe road burns or even a cleanly broken bone, and not some type of cartilage injury.

That woman is going to have to be escorted out of the state.

clearly i hope big ben recovers and is alright, but i feel it's my duty to point out the stupidity of a) riding a motorcycle and b) riding a motorcycle without a helmet when the health of your body is how you earn your living. especially with non-guarenteed contracts in the NFL.
