The Steelers confirmed the accident for Channel 4 Action News. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review said the accident happened on Second Avenue near the 10th Street Bridge. A witness told Channel 4 Action News that Roethlisberger went over the handlebars, hit the windshield of another vehicle and then hit the ground. Roethlisberger was not wearing a helmet, according to the paper. Police have closed down the bridge, Second Avenue and the Armstrong Tunnels. Roethlisberger was taken to Mercy Hospital. There is no word on the extent of his injuries. |
Damnit!
|
Wow...that was stupid. Hopefully he's not dead.
How could you not wear a helmet! Dumbass |
That sucks. :(
|
ugh. i lost a friend who was injured riding a motorcycle, and he was wearing all sorts of protective gear. :(
|
Wow.
|
I have 100% confidence in Omar Jacobs.
|
Paging Kordell Stewart...
|
Big shit all over the local news right now. Supposedly he was talking after the incident, but a cop said it looked bad.
|
How much of a difference does a helmet actually make in these type of situations?
|
Quote:
Hopefully his head didn't hit the windshield? |
Quote:
It did. I hope he's okay, but this looks awful. |
bad link
|
LOL. I remember something about him riding a motorcycle without a helmet last year and Bill Cowher warning him. That's what you get, sucka!
|
I remember reading something about how the Steeler had asked him to stop riding the bike and he refused.
This was back when the "Ben has a huge ego and isn't a team player" stories were going around last year. Hope he's ok. edit: RA beat me to it. |
Woman makes a left handed turn into him when he had a green light.

Really, because it's working for me? |

dola, more information from ESPN.com
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2480830 Apparently not life threatening, so thats good... |
They never fail to come out in terrible situations like this do they?
I'll be praying for him. |
Quote:
Actually, they say early indications are that it isn't life threatening. It's probably too early to say for sure if this just happened.. |
|
Quote:
at first I thought "what an idiot riding without a helmet" then I started thinking more like "what a frigging idiot, riding a bike at all"... Not that I like the guy all that much, but I hope he's ok. FM |
Quote:
As with pretty much everything in life, it all depends. A helmet, along with other protective gear, for the mostt part will make a huge difference in the injuries you suffer. I dont know anything about what happened to Big Ben here, but lets say he did go head first through the windshield, a helmet could have been a difference maker between life and death, it wont however, help you avoid neck injuries, at least not in any of my experiences riding. I honestly dont understand how someone can ride w.o a helmet, doesnt make much sense to me. |
Quote:
Yeah, with the way that motorists can totally ignore bikes on the road, I think that riding one is not a good idea generally. |
Windshield was cracked, but not punctured.
|
I'm sorry, but what a fucking idiot for not wearing a helmet. I think guys on bikes with no helmets are complete morons.
Hope he comes out ok, then he can go without a helmet this season at QB. |
There's a Carson Palmer joke in here somewhere, but until I know that Ben is OK, I'm going to refrain...
|
Quote:
from that answer, you probably ride a bike, I'm not saying it's not a good idea for you, do what you want. (and if you don't ride, well, change the "you" for whatever name you want ;)) Maybe I'm thinking the same you do, as in you have so little protection on a bike and so much you don't control. In my eye, it's taking unnecessary risk when you're whole career lies on your health... FM |
Quote:
that's an idea :D FM |
never got motorcyles. always considered them teh dumb.
|
Quote:
I think you should ride with a helmet. I also think that people should account for motorcyles before they pull in front of them and make a left handed turn. |
Quote:
I'm all for enjoy life and all that jazz, but personally my life is too valuable to me to take part in high risk activities. And while I'm not a franchise quarterback, I appreciate the committments to my family enough not to risk myself unnecessarily. There are enough bad things that can happen to you on a football field to ruin your career and livelihood, I don't know why you'd compound that by riding a motorcycle without a helmet. I think this case underscores that any more -- I'd be less worried about what Ben might do on a motorcycle, but more worried about what someone else will do when he's on a motorcycle, as it sounds like is the case here. |
Quote:
|
Quote:
the motorcyles should account for me. my car with own them. |
Quote:
By going through a green light? |
Quote:
He didn't say Ben did. He said most motorcyclists do. That has been my experience as well, whether it be riding between cars when their isn't a lane there, riding on the shoulder, or doing other things that are stupid. |
Quote:
|
Quote:
Don't be sorry, he is an f'n idiot for not wearing a helmet. It's like a seatbelt and my wife not wearing one. "Oh, but my friend survived an accident because she wasn't wearing one." Ah....ok. I just bought a protective jacket for riding this weekend, sure if I hit someone at 75 mph, I'm probably dead, but it just might save my life too. A helmet should be MANDENTORY in all states. If not, ride at your own risk and sign a waiver. |
Quote:
thing is, that kind of accident could have easily happened with a car cutting another car in a moment of distraction and that would only have resulted in crushed steel and scratched paint. and we were not there, who's telling us that Ben wasn't speeding to beat the light and came out of nowhere... FM |
I think I have had times when motorcyclists have tried to *beat* me to the left while stopped to make a turn (but then, I'd had a *car* try to do this too).
Generally though, I would say that many drivers are oblivious to bikes on the road (I don't ride one, but about every other male in my and my wife's family has). |
Quote:
i believe he was speaking in generalities, not this specific situation, and I agree with him. Yes, motorists should pay more attention, as bikes are harder to see. But guys who ride between lanes, pop-wheelies, make illegal turns and dart between cars, do not help the situation. in general. :) |
Quote:
That said, I'd say the ratio of cars to motorcycles I see on the road I'm sure is greater than 1,000 to 1 -- could be 10,000 to one. I'll bet I could count on one hand the number of times I've seen a car pass on the shoulder of a highway, as an example But I'd say a half dozen times a year I see a dumbass on a motorcycle pass in between cars driving alongside one another on the highway. There's a stretch of interstate by my house where during the last year I've seen somebody popping wheelies a half dozen times. There are morons in every walk of life, but for some reason motorcyclists account for more than their fair share. |
Quote:
Check out motorcyle week in Laconia, NH this week. Let's just say it won't change your mind on this. |
The only reason I've heard that bikers won't wear helmets is that most bikers would rather die without a helmet rather than be paralyzed with a helmet on.
|

|
Quote:
I don't know, I think the ratio of idiots to vehicles is about the same accross the board. I've seen plenty of fucktards in cars. |
Wow, I am as big of a Bengal fan as you can be and absolutely despise the Steelers and I am really hoping everything is okay. From reading some of the posts in this thread you would have thought he just raped a little girl and threw her off a bridge. What not hold off the critisisms of Ben and helmets until we get more information?
|
Quote:
Agreed. We were just talking about that here at work. I have a Yamaha R6 and I always get that look and stare from motorists who have seen something similar and an idiot attached to it who weave in and out of traffic and go so damn fast, you don't see them in your rear view mirror until they are about to pass you. Most of those types also have temp tags for some reason. It's too bad, I've taken the safety course and I just love the crotch rocket style of bikes... I'm extremely safe consious. |
Quote:
but there are even plenty more cars on the road than bikes, no? FM |

Serious but stable condition.
|
My father was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident when I was 19. He'd probably be dead if he wasn't wearing a helmet. As it was, he was in the hospital for two months, then at home recuperating for another four before he could even go back to work.
Sometimes, a helmet isn't enough. My uncle was a motorcycle cop who was killed in an accident while on duty pursuing a car. I'll never ride one. |
from front page of drudgereport.com....
TRAUMA UNIT: Super Bowl QB Roethlisberger suffers serious head injury in motorcycle accident... In surgery now, in serious, but stable condition... Developing... |
Who really knows how true any of this is...you all know how things travel!
The area is about 6 blocks from my building here. Rumor is the car was heading the wrong way on a one-way street (2nd Ave)--damn woman drivers! |
Quote:
I knew he had specifically affirmed his decision to not ride with a helmet at some point. Big thanks for the link on this. What a moron. |
Quote:
that's my point |
Quote:
I guess I missed it too. If the fucktart count is relatively equal then the fucktard rate for bikers is off the charts. |
Quote:
and that's my point. Say you see one fucktard biker in a day out of the 5 bikers you saw, then you see one fucktard motorist out of the 100 motorists you saw in the day, well the ratio is, as mrsmurf said, off the chart. Disclaimer: totally invented numbers, I have no stats to prove any claims made here :) FM |
Quote:
Disclaimer #2: fucktard is loosely defined here. one man's fucktard and another man's einstein. |
Quote:
true, true. FM |
wow, didn't I just hear him this morning on Tony Bruno?
|
Quote:
He was giving the interview from the motorcycle... that explains it. |
Texas has no helmet law. I choose to wear mine. I value my brain just a little more than having the wind blow through my hair.
I had an accident in 94 where I hit a rather large pothole, went into a high speed wobble and rolled with my bike about 100 yards across pavement into a ditch and up against a barbed wire fence. I know if I didn't have my helmet on then it would have been a very ugly scene as my head bounced off the pavement and ground several times as my body rolled along. Sky, ground, sky, ground, sky, ground, sky is all that I saw as it was happening. I love my helmet. That said, stupid move Ben, hope you are O.K. |

ouch...

Pittsburgh police have scheduled a news conference for 3 p.m. It will be carried live on ThePittsburghChannel.com.
|
My first reaction is "Wow, I really hope and pray that he's going to be ok". My second reaction is "What a moron".
|
Ugh some people need to be hurt.
hxxp://cgi.ebay.com/Ben-Roethlisberger-blood-from-motorcycle-accident_W0QQitemZ8827638471QQcategoryZ56080QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem And the text from the ebay auction because I'm sure they'll pull it Ravens fan in right place at right time. 1 ounce of Roethlisberger blood up for auction collected from the scene of the accident in Pittsburgh on June 12th at 11:30am You can do with it as you wish. You can clone the DNA to make ugly stupid QB's with disturbing facial hair, or you can just mount it on your dashboard and just laugh when the Steelers are 4-12 this year. . . . . . . *do not bid this is just a joke, you will receive nothing..DUH |

Sums up my reaction as well. |
ESPN is reporting the surgery is for a broken jaw, 6-8 week injury
|
http://www.thepittsburghchannel.com/...67/detail.html
PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is undergoing surgery after a motorcycle accident on Monday morning, doctors at Mercy Hospital said. Roethlisberger is in serious but stable condition, according to Dr. Larry Jones. According to a police source, Roethlisberger suffered a broken jaw, broke his left sinus cavity, suffered a 9-inch laceration to the back of his head, lost many teeth and has severe injuries to his knees from hitting the pavement. A plastic surgeon has been called in, the source said. |
Quote:
Severe injuries to his knees? Ouch. |
Quote:
Hopefully it's just severe road burns or even a cleanly broken bone, and not some type of cartilage injury. |
That woman is going to have to be escorted out of the state.
|
clearly i hope big ben recovers and is alright, but i feel it's my duty to point out the stupidity of a) riding a motorcycle and b) riding a motorcycle without a helmet when the health of your body is how you earn your living. especially with non-guarenteed contracts in the NFL.
oh, and Tom Brady would never ride a motorcycle |
..or ride out in the country where there are no stop lights and knuckleheads... like I do..
|
First of all, I hope the guy is all right.
I also wonder if Kerry Collin's phone is ringing. Who is the backup in Pittsburgh these days ... Charlie Batch? |
From the current version of the story posted at espn.com
Steelers backup quarterback Charlie Batch was at the emergency room. He had no comment. Any wanna bet his comment wouldn't have been printable? "Oh shit. You mean I gotta PLAY? Oh fuck." |
FOF2 Charlie would be a good thing. Regular Charlie would not.
|
Quote:
Heh, heh I loved Charlie in FOF2. Maybe Rodney Peete is still available. |
I feel bad for the guy - definitely a moron move riding without a helmet but he always struck me as an alright kind of guy. Hopefully not a stupid and immature move that cost him his career.
|
Quote:
Edit--Tell me a classy way to call him a dumbass for being warned and then getting injured (not only affecting himself but his team as well) and I'll do it. |
Quote:
BTW, for all the Chicago folk here - what's up with the motorcycle riders there? Obviously there's no helmet law there, but even so, I was shocked to observe that the vast majority of riders there don't wear a helmet. I just don't get that (lack of) thinking... |

Oh come on...I've spent all freaking day avoiding the WC thread, the radio and the TV, and I get a spoiler in a damn Ben Rothlesberger thread? WTF were you thinking???? Keep your mouth shut from now on please!
Sorry...I posted it and then left the house, just got back on and saw the drama...post is edited. |
