College Football Week 5 Discussion Thread (spoilers inside)

Week 5 of the college football season kicks off tonight with a C-USA clash between Southern Mississippi and Central Florida on ESPN2 at 7:30. I'll be watching. :)

Here is the link to the rest of this week's TV slate of games:

VT has two starters suspended for the GT game this weekend -- WR Josh Morgan and DE Chris Ellis were among a crowd of VT students that were picked up and cited for disturbing the peace earlier this week outside a bar in Blacksburg, so Beamer suspended them.

With our situation at WR (very deep) it shouldn't hurt our offense (which is inconsistant anyways), but Ellis is a big loss for this particular game. History shows that if you pressure Reggie Ball, he'll fold like a card table, so we need our DE rotation to be able to put pressure on him all game. I think it went from a possible 7 point VT win to an even matchup.

General Mike 09-26-2006 08:25 PM

This USM-UCF game has been a pretty good battle so far.

cartman 09-26-2006 08:28 PM

Texas and Oklahoma are taking similar approaches to their preparation for the Red River Shootout next weekend. This weekend Texas plays Sam Houston State, while OU has a bye week. The level of competition for the 1st team on both squads will be comparable. :)

cartman 09-28-2006 07:42 PM

Looks like TCU's win streak is going to come to an end. They haven't been able to stop BYU on 3rd down all night.

General Mike 09-28-2006 09:01 PM

Here is the 3:30 pm coverage map for ABC this weekend:

VPI97 09-28-2006 09:10 PM

Unique third quarter in the Auburn/USC game...Auburn gets the ball to start the half and goes on a 17 play FG drive. They follow it up with an onsides kick and go on a 14 play TD drive that extends into the fourth quarter. First time I can remember seeing a team not have a single offensive play in a quarter.

General Mike 09-28-2006 09:43 PM

South Carolina's got a chance in this one.

timmynausea 09-28-2006 10:06 PM

Survive and advance for Auburn. South Carolina turned 4 red zone trips into 10 points or they would've pulled off the upset.

Galaxy 09-28-2006 10:26 PM

Good game. Should of SC went for the 1st down?

VPI97 09-28-2006 11:05 PM

Hmm...I was just watching Sportcenter and they did one of those pieces where they talk about poll results from ESPN.com. Anyway, the poll question is "Who should be #2?" and on the show, they displayed the results as USC winning the poll with 48% to Auburn's 35%. The problem with that is the actual poll results on ESPN.com were the other way around - Aub 48%, USC 35% - a case of West Coast bias?

Neuqua 09-29-2006 04:27 PM

Anyone else kind of surprised that Rutgers is only a 4.5 point favorite tonight?

B & B 09-29-2006 04:56 PM

Im more suprised that the line is now down to 3 1/2.

Everyones brothers uncle's mother is on Rutgers.

Thinking about taking Paxson and Cartwright plus the points.

I agree Mike overstated it. USF is "good" as in a legit 1-A program. Rutgers seems to be moving towards a solid road win here. I can't complain.

I want them to go at least 2-1 on this 3 game road trip, so this appears to be a very nice start.

Poli 09-29-2006 10:07 PM

Personally, through the Rutgers fans on the board, I'm becoming a closet Rutgers fan (in other words, I'm happy they're winning 'cause it makes you guys happy). I want them to win all 3. :)

Still an onside kick to go, but even if USF gets it, those new clock rules will let them run one play at most.

no 10 yards

No....since it's not a change of possession, the clock doesn't not start until the ball is snapped if the kicking team recovers.

cthomer5000 09-29-2006 10:21 PM

not even close to 10 yards.

not true anymore to my knowledge. these new college rules are crazy gay.

st.cronin 09-29-2006 10:22 PM

College football officials are not as good as the ones the NFL uses. In other words, they really suck.

Craptacular 09-29-2006 10:22 PM

Well, if USF gets this ruling (which they shouldn't), they were lucky the play only took three seconds. It was clean, without a big ruckus for the ball ... however, I think it's pretty clear it was before 10 yards.

Poli 09-29-2006 10:22 PM

And that's not the "I'm happy" gay.

VPI97 09-29-2006 10:23 PM

Vegas Vic 09-29-2006 10:23 PM

Galaxy 09-29-2006 10:23 PM

I was in the press box last week when the referee explained this one. Even with all the new changes, the onside kick isn't a change of possession like a normal kickoff where the clock starts under the new rules. So if the kicking team recovers an onside kick, the clock doesn't not start until the ball in snapped -- this is like an exception to the new clock rules.

But anywho, it was moot here. Good victory for the RU.

General Mike 09-29-2006 10:26 PM

F that guy who speared Leonard on the onside kick. That was blatant.

Ironically (actually this is probably just laziness, not irony) i probably wont even make it to a home game this year. the only game i have tickest for is @ Annapolis in a couple weeks. After that perhaps the Syracsue game @ home.

I definitely can't make the bowl game as i'll be somewhere in Japan.

I think UCF has the tools to be a mid-major power. A head coach with a "brand name", a recruiting market, a good stadium.

So, how good is Rutgers? Will they be able to compete against West Virginia and Louisville?

Err... no. Perhaps Rutgers may have had a (slim) chance while Cantwell was starting, but with Brohm behind center, Rutgers gets beat bad. Same with WVU. At least 2 TDs losses in both games is my opinion.

They've been on the cusp for quite a few years. I remember in the late 90's, UCF with Daunte Culpepper went into Nebraska and scared the hell out of the Cornhuskers, who were still a national powerhouse at that time.

No, I don't think Rutgers can beat those 2, but they can win 9 games, and they are solid.

Completely agree. I think we'll get beat beat pretty handily by Louisville, and beat by a large margin by WVU - who is a full cut above anyone else in the conference right now. Still, that makes 10-2 a remote possibility... i can dream.

I've never been one to follow college football and I'm trying to make sure I watch more of it this year (even bought a few preview rags to learn about the teams). One thing watching college football has done for me is to put the officiating in the NFL into perspective.

Really, really pulling for Illinois, as it will make RU's win over them look better.

I'm listening to it on XM right now...is it on TV anywhere? Or just regional?

DeToxRox 09-30-2006 01:29 PM

Regional TV for MSU/Illinois

I dont think this win will help Rutgers much thouh, as MSU is going to lose their next two to Michigan/OSU

The Big East is 5th out of the 6 BCS Conferences, so if the BE doesn't deserve to be a major conference, the ACC sure as heck shouldn't be either.

The Big East has TWO teams in the Top 10, and 3 in the top 25. That's pretty decent if you ask me.

I think Rutgers has the most underrated running back in the nation, and I think Rutgers is on a high upswing. They may not necessarily beat Louisville or WVU this year, but watch out a few years from now.

I'm happy for them and their fans. They deserve this record, and they've earned it.
