College Football Week 5 Discussion Thread (spoilers inside)
Week 5 of the college football season kicks off tonight with a C-USA clash between Southern Mississippi and Central Florida on ESPN2 at 7:30. I'll be watching. :)
Here is the link to the rest of this week's TV slate of games: http://mattsarz44017.tripod.com/2006/week5.html |
VT has two starters suspended for the GT game this weekend -- WR Josh Morgan and DE Chris Ellis were among a crowd of VT students that were picked up and cited for disturbing the peace earlier this week outside a bar in Blacksburg, so Beamer suspended them.
With our situation at WR (very deep) it shouldn't hurt our offense (which is inconsistant anyways), but Ellis is a big loss for this particular game. History shows that if you pressure Reggie Ball, he'll fold like a card table, so we need our DE rotation to be able to put pressure on him all game. I think it went from a possible 7 point VT win to an even matchup. |
This USM-UCF game has been a pretty good battle so far.
|
Texas and Oklahoma are taking similar approaches to their preparation for the Red River Shootout next weekend. This weekend Texas plays Sam Houston State, while OU has a bye week. The level of competition for the 1st team on both squads will be comparable. :)
|
Looks like TCU's win streak is going to come to an end. They haven't been able to stop BYU on 3rd down all night.
|
Here is the 3:30 pm coverage map for ABC this weekend:

Unique third quarter in the Auburn/USC game...Auburn gets the ball to start the half and goes on a 17 play FG drive. They follow it up with an onsides kick and go on a 14 play TD drive that extends into the fourth quarter. First time I can remember seeing a team not have a single offensive play in a quarter.
|
South Carolina's got a chance in this one.
|
Survive and advance for Auburn. South Carolina turned 4 red zone trips into 10 points or they would've pulled off the upset.
|
Good game. Should of SC went for the 1st down?
|
Hmm...I was just watching Sportcenter and they did one of those pieces where they talk about poll results from ESPN.com. Anyway, the poll question is "Who should be #2?" and on the show, they displayed the results as USC winning the poll with 48% to Auburn's 35%. The problem with that is the actual poll results on ESPN.com were the other way around - Aub 48%, USC 35% - a case of West Coast bias?

Anyone else kind of surprised that Rutgers is only a 4.5 point favorite tonight?
|
Im more suprised that the line is now down to 3 1/2.
Everyones brothers uncle's mother is on Rutgers. Thinking about taking Paxson and Cartwright plus the points. |

No. USF is very good. |
Stupid FRIDAY night game ruining my college football pickem...grrr... so much for making my picks on Friday night :(
|
My goddamn heart hurts.

Is it just me or should that have been another grounding call in the end zone?

You need more emphasis on the V of Very. Think "V for Vendetta" type emphasis on the V.

I agree Mike overstated it. USF is "good" as in a legit 1-A program. Rutgers seems to be moving towards a solid road win here. I can't complain. I want them to go at least 2-1 on this 3 game road trip, so this appears to be a very nice start. |
Personally, through the Rutgers fans on the board, I'm becoming a closet Rutgers fan (in other words, I'm happy they're winning 'cause it makes you guys happy). I want them to win all 3. :)
|
Rutgers is not making this easy... come on you jackasses.
|
Quote:
' |
well damn... i know who the refs bet on.
|
Quote:
not so fast |

|
Quote:
Do they ever make it easy? Tick Tock Tick Tock. |
Quote:
looking like the back judge and side judge bet on different teams! |
Wow ... what a finish to this game.
|
Quote:
I'm pretty sure that's a universal "i'm agree." |
The game's over? Who won? I'm stuck watching Navy-Marine Corps news and junk.
|
Quote:
thank god i have booze to either soften the blow or accentuate the high. |
Quote:
they should really get together and decide who they're gonna throw the game for in advance and try to coordinate ;) |
Quote:
meaning I share your sentiment |
come on... do Rutgers and the Jets really have to act so similarly? even if they win, Rutgers likes to make it torturous.
|
Quote:
It's not over yet. 22-20, USF going for 2. |
Quote:
I tell you what though, I was called black (as in, get your black *** over here) last week. I think it was a compliment. That was a first. :) |
WOW
|
Quote:
USF receiver dropped it!!! wooooot! |
wow, rutgers squeaks away with another one
|
Go Rutgers!
|
Howard Dean: YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
|
Anything can still happen...
|
good feelings about this '06 Big East
|
I thought that was much closer to PI than the earlier play where he jumped up for it.
|
i was actually rooting for RU tonight, I want a battle of 6-1 teams when RU comes to town for Homecoming in late october
|
Still an onside kick to go, but even if USF gets it, those new clock rules will let them run one play at most.
|
no 10 yards
|
Quote:
and i want to see this look again: ![]() |
I don't think it went 10 yards.
|
Quote:
No....since it's not a change of possession, the clock doesn't not start until the ball is snapped if the kicking team recovers. |
not even close to 10 yards.
|
Quote:
not true anymore to my knowledge. these new college rules are crazy gay. |
College football officials are not as good as the ones the NFL uses. In other words, they really suck.
|
Well, if USF gets this ruling (which they shouldn't), they were lucky the play only took three seconds. It was clean, without a big ruckus for the ball ... however, I think it's pretty clear it was before 10 yards.
|
And that's not the "I'm happy" gay.
|
Only went nine and a half...
|
See that, you f**king Oregon officials? That's how the system is supposed to work.
|
gmae ova.
|
They don't even have to take a knee, Mr .Announcer guy.
|
How high will Rutgers be ranked if they make it to the Nov. 9th game against Louisville without a loss? That would be a huge game.
|
Good call....No Pac-10 Officials. :)
Kudos to Rutgers and USF. |
Quote:
that whole thing was made 100 times worse by the fact that OREGON NEVER RECOVERED THE FUCKING BALL... unreal. |
I think USF has the potential to be a long-term player.
|
Quote:
I was in the press box last week when the referee explained this one. Even with all the new changes, the onside kick isn't a change of possession like a normal kickoff where the clock starts under the new rules. So if the kicking team recovers an onside kick, the clock doesn't not start until the ball in snapped -- this is like an exception to the new clock rules. But anywho, it was moot here. Good victory for the RU. |
F that guy who speared Leonard on the onside kick. That was blatant.

Agree. The directional Floridas have come a long way in a very short time. |
Quote:
Florida Atlantic is still lagging, with Howard Smellsofbourbon as the head coach. |
Quote:
Problem with UCF is they aren't in a major conference. |
Quote:
Hey, I'll take that look any day of the week over Walt Harris' dumb-ass roaming the sideline :D The Oct. 21 Pitt/RU game really has me excited though. With it being Homecoming and with Rutgers suddenly jumping ahead of Pitt in the conference this season, I think everyone will be really fired up. Should be one hell of a Saturday afternoon. |
Quote:
Didn't UCF win a conference and play in a bowl game last year?   |
One thing I never understood is why "South Florida" is in the northern part of the State.
|
Quote:
Zing! ;) |
Quote:
Did he get it in Oklahoma? :) |
Ironically (actually this is probably just laziness, not irony) i probably wont even make it to a home game this year. the only game i have tickest for is @ Annapolis in a couple weeks. After that perhaps the Syracsue game @ home.
I definitely can't make the bowl game as i'll be somewhere in Japan. |

|
Quote:
oh snap. |
I think UCF has the tools to be a mid-major power. A head coach with a "brand name", a recruiting market, a good stadium.
So, how good is Rutgers? Will they be able to compete against West Virginia and Louisville? |
Quote:
Err... no. Perhaps Rutgers may have had a (slim) chance while Cantwell was starting, but with Brohm behind center, Rutgers gets beat bad. Same with WVU. At least 2 TDs losses in both games is my opinion. |
Quote:
They've been on the cusp for quite a few years. I remember in the late 90's, UCF with Daunte Culpepper went into Nebraska and scared the hell out of the Cornhuskers, who were still a national powerhouse at that time. |
Quote:
No, I don't think Rutgers can beat those 2, but they can win 9 games, and they are solid. |
Quote:
Completely agree. I think we'll get beat beat pretty handily by Louisville, and beat by a large margin by WVU - who is a full cut above anyone else in the conference right now. Still, that makes 10-2 a remote possibility... i can dream. |
Quote:
I've never been one to follow college football and I'm trying to make sure I watch more of it this year (even bought a few preview rags to learn about the teams). One thing watching college football has done for me is to put the officiating in the NFL into perspective. |
Geez, Michigan State needs to shake their hangover from last week. They are losing to Illinois 20-10 late in the 3rd quarter.
|
Quote:
Really, really pulling for Illinois, as it will make RU's win over them look better. I'm listening to it on XM right now...is it on TV anywhere? Or just regional? |
Regional TV for MSU/Illinois
I dont think this win will help Rutgers much thouh, as MSU is going to lose their next two to Michigan/OSU |
Illinois is a young, young team. Isiah Williams looks like he could be a player in the future.
|
I've got it on a couple of different channels as part of the Sports Package on DirecTV. If you get SNY, it's showing on that station.
|
Quote:
The Big East is 5th out of the 6 BCS Conferences, so if the BE doesn't deserve to be a major conference, the ACC sure as heck shouldn't be either. The Big East has TWO teams in the Top 10, and 3 in the top 25. That's pretty decent if you ask me. |
They've been switching to the MSU/ILL game on ESPN2.
|
Quote:
I think Rutgers has the most underrated running back in the nation, and I think Rutgers is on a high upswing. They may not necessarily beat Louisville or WVU this year, but watch out a few years from now. I'm happy for them and their fans. They deserve this record, and they've earned it. |
Quote:
Beautiful...thanks. Of course that was the one channel I didn't bother to check. Was Stanton's arm "indisputably" going forward? Even MSU's homer announcers seemed surprised by that call. |
Mizzou looks like they will walk away with the Big 12 North.
|
Illinois is in FG range...
|
38 yard FG attempt for Illinois to win the game and avoid OT...
|
And it's good! MSU's season has fallen completely apart.
|
cue the Schmidty rant.
And should I be pissed off that my NBC affiliate stayed with the Virginia blowout of Duke (37-0) and made us miss the first quarter of the ND game? Personally, I don't particularly care either way, except that since the ND game is in HD, it looks better. |
John L Smith is gonna get fired.
