There are few teams that I enjoy watching lose more than the Yankees, Tennessee football is the only thing that comes to mind.

That's such a glib answer, tho. It's not as if the late 90's teams won series because they were "homegrown" (myth) and the ones now because they are mercenaries. Also, it's not as if you can win with only homegrown talent. After all, Ivan Rodriguez, Magglio Ordonez, Kenny Rogers, and Todd Jones are all lifelong Tigers.

Nothing makes my day more than a Yankees loss. Ok, there are a lot of other things that would make my day better, but I sure as hell love it when they lose.

If Dateline NBC and Perverted Justice wrangled up a team full of child molesters, I'd buy their jersey and wear it to Yankee Stadium to root against the Yankees.

You could make a case that this years Tigers team is built more outside the system than those Yankee championship teams. They did get players and sometimes stars to fill in. . . but Jeter, Pettite, Rivera, Williams, and Posada among others were homegrown players. And those made up a large majority of the core.

Still, there is no doubt to the answer to the question above. The Yankees will continue to try and raid other rosters. We've already heard about the Soriano speculation floating around. I'd be a large sum of cash that they'll spend big to upgrade the bullpen.

I don't care really, I'm just thrilled to see them lose.

The homegrown talent on the Tigers that I know of are Fernando Rodney, Justin Verlander and Joel Zumaya of the pitchers.

Omar Infante, Brandon Inge, Ramon Santiago and Curtis Granderson are the position players.

Not sure how this compares with other teams but thats 7 out of 25.

Nope, trade with the Oakland A's to get him. He and Carlos Pena and Franklyn German. Bonderman was a part of Moneyball by Michael Lewis. Oakland's owner didn't want to give him big dollar because of his(Bondermans) reading dyslexia.

I was at tonights game. Best experience of my fucking life. Unreal. Totally unreal. As someone who was there for all of 2003, this is vindication. I am only 21 so I wasn't around for 84 and barely remember 87. All I remember is losing. I can't even tell you what it feels like right now. Total amazement and shock.

Did you get to see Kenny Rogers spraying champagne on the fans? That was pretty awesome. He then gave the empty bottles to different fans.

Yup. I stayed over an hour after the game ended. It was just insane. Seeing Grilli and Casey spray the fans with champaigne, seeing Zumaya run after a Horse with the bubbly. It was just so much fun.

but wasn't he like in rookieball at that point or something? i think you have to leave "homegrown" open to interpertation...what % of players even reach the majors (let alone stick there for say...3 years) with the club who drafted them?

Most of the time homegrown = drafted players though. I think that kinda sucks because it discounts all trades teams make when they are selling near July 31.

It should be known that the A's didn't want Bonderman. He was Beans first pick, but he was just put in as GM and didn't scout like he wanted to yet. A scout picked him. Bean was furious and that pick lead to his new system. So he was an A's product but he wasn't wanted by them.

I'd root for the ground to swallow up both teams into the fiery pits of hell. And all the fans, too.

If Mike Tyson was fighting Derek Jeter, I would root for Tyson.

I love Yzerman but the Wings at their height were never as popular as the Tigers are now. The most common sports people revere Leyland. I am as big a hockey fan as it gets and he came to mind but I'd say as far as sheer popularity Leyland is as big as it gets since Barry.

I disagree with all of this. Leyland's only be here for one year. One. year. Yzerman has been in Detroit since 1983. He won three Stanley Cups. Leyland hasn't even won anything. Sure, the Tigers are bing, but to say the Wings were "never as popular as the Tigers are now" is just getting caught up in the moment. It will be a while before Leyland enters this discussion with iconic Detroit sports figures. He's way down on the list.

I'm talking about right now. At the height of this right now he's bigger then Yzerman was. More people care about the Tigers. I'm not calling him a fixture in Detroit history. I am saying at this point in time the people here are more infatuated then Leyland then I can remember with Yzerman and I've been in this area during the Wings at their peak. Yzerman is still the class of Detroit sports icons but right now Leylands peak popularity as a whole is bigger then Yzermans.

Not to come to the Yanks defense, bc I am very happy they are out, but back when they were winning the Series they did it with their core being homegrown guys such as, Bernie, Petitte, Jeter, Posada, Rivera and filling the rest of the team with the right guys. I have never been that fan who gets pissed about how much the Yankees spend, those are the rules so more power to them, but back in the day the Yanks spent their money wisely, which in turn won them 4 championships in 5 yrs, but now they just seem to throw it to whoever has a monster yr and doesn't really fit with the team.
