Stand-up comedians
My brother used to be a fan of Mitch Hedberg. He died without ever seeing him. So, when John Pinette came to mighty Dayton, Ohio we had to go see him for my brother. Guy was hysterical. I knew he was before that but man, to see him live, was just a riot. Not to mention, compared to many comments, his routine was pretty clean in terms of language, etc. An hour of comedy and maybe 10 cuss words.
Who are some of your favorite stand-ups? My list: Lewis Black Dennis Miller Robin Williams Nick DiPaolo |
Saw Eddie Izzard live last year. Enjoyed it.
I like alot of comedians. Some of my favorites have been; Eddie Izzard Jake Johannsen Mitch Hedberg Dennis Miller Lewis Black Chris Rock George Carlin |
Recently saw DiPaolo in DC, great act to see live. He does have a podcast for those who didn't know. I stumbled upon Demetri Martin on comedy central and couldn't stop laughing, I'd love to see him live, but isn't he only in NYC?
Mitch Hedberg was great, too bad I never got to see him do a standup performance live. I have also seen Lewis Black a few times live, he is a great comedian to see as well. I'd love to catch Louis CK live. Some musical comedians to see would be Stephen Lynch or the Flight of the Conchords. |
Carlos Mencia and Joe Rogan!

comedy Kathy Griffin response

Emo Phillips rocks imho ...
|
I like Tim Hawkins. He is probably unknown to most of you. He is a Christian Comedian. 100% clean. But he is very funny. He does parodies of songs and they are hilarious. If anyone is interested, go to Timhawkins.net. There are free promos on his dvs's and some clips from his cd's.
|
Lewis Black
Denis Leary Jeremy Hotz My most overrated...Dane Cook. Not funny at all to me. |
Aries Spears
Pablo Francisco Stephen Lynch Lewis Black maybe Nick Swardson |
Lewis Black
Ron White |
Robin Williams, Richard Pryor, Lewis Black, Chris Rock, Eddie Izzard, George Carlin, Bill Hicks
Mitch Hedberg had his moments as well. I still wish that I had discovered Hicks before it was too late to ever get a chance to see him live. I have been able to see Izzard,Black, and Hedberg live |
Bill Hicks, Patton Oswalt, David Cross, Eddie Izzard, Bill Cosby, Richard Pryor, George Carlin (no order here)
"Feelin Kinda Patton" is by far, one of the best standup CDs recorded. |
George Carlin is probably the best of all time. Chris Rock is the best working today.
Beyond that, if you miss Hedberg you should definitely check out Dmitri Martin. Louis CK is good, as is Dave Attel. Lewis Black is always good. If you want something political, check out Dennis Miller and Bill Maher. I've liked what little I heard from Jim Gaffigan. David Cross is funny in that "not all that funny but still funny" way. All the Blue Collar guys are good, although Ron White is the only one people will admit to liking for some reason. |
I saw Mitch Hedberg, Dave Attel, and Lewis Black in New Orleans a couple years ago and that was a great show. Mitch is one of my favorites- I also like Brian Posein (sp?), and I don't know if you can really consider him stand-up since he plays the guitar but Stephen Lynch is funny as hell in a very sick sort of way.
|
Weird to see differering tastes...i cant stand any of the blue collar guys, hedberg, dennis miller or bill maher. Interesting to see who likes what, speaks of their personality to some extent

I saw a Bill Engvall stand up special on Comedy Central a few months ago. He was funny, but it's the only stand up of his that I saw so I can't say I like him or not. |
David Cross
Zach Galifianakis Patton Oswalt Dave Attel Jim Gaffigan |
David Cross is easy #1 for me.
|
Quote:
Just viewed some of his clips and they are cool - so I second him :D |
George Carlin
Chris Rock Eddie Murphy Nick Dipaolo Jim Norton Patrice O'Neal Louis CK Dave Attell Sarah Silverman |
I like a lot of the people already mentioned, so I'll just throw out Kevin Pollack.
|
Cross, Silverman, Hedberg, Rock, DiPaolo, CK, Attell...a few others as well.
I was lucky enough to catch Hedberg a few months before he died. Great show. |
Rosie O'Donell
|
No love for Steven Wright? I love his stand up routines.
At the other end of the spectrum, I was a huge Sam Kinison fan as well. |
I have seen a couple of funny comedians come through the comedy clubs in my area. The one that took me most by surprise, and probably the hands down best show I saw was Bobcat Goldwaithe. He was really sharp with his crowd interaction and improv.
Jim Gaffigan was pretty funny. I also saw Charlie Murphy and Ashy Larry. I got to shake Ashy Larrys hand and get a picture with him after the show which was pretty cool. |
Jim Gaffigan
Daniel Tosh Mike Birbiglia Lewis Black Patton Oswalt Rodney Dangerfield Brian Regan David Cross Most unintentionally funny standup ever, Spencer Rice in the Who's Funnier episode of Kenny vs. Spenny |
george carlin I can do without most of his anti religion schtick
robin williams dennis miller Leeary, sometimes Ron White Rodney Carrington (wife dragged me, I laughed for 2 solid hours, I was surprise) Favorite gone: Jay Hickman |
Jim Gaffigan
Bob Marley Dennis Leary Robin Williams |
Jerry Seinfeld
Andrew Dice Clay Louis C.K. Artie Lange Denis Leary |
Lewis Black
Mitch Hedberg Bill Hicks Doug Stanhope Todd Barry David Cross |
Carrot Top
|
Robin Williams
Pablo Francisco Gabriel Iglesias |
Izzard, Seinfeld, Jeff Dunham, and Carlin

Jeff Dunham, but I am a suck for a good ventriloquist. ![]() |
Quote:
Shit, I forgot about Francisco. Pablo Francisco is fucking awesome. "WHAT-EVERRRRRR!" |
Steven Wright, Eddie Murphy (in the day), Bill Cosby, and George Carlin. No doubt are the 4 funniest cats.
Oh, and IMO - Robin Williams is more irritating than funny. |

BTW...I'm 23, and wasn't around to see Eddie Murphy during the Raw/Delirious days......I bought Raw, and just rented Delirious...and I can't believe this subersive comic genius is the same guy that did Daddy Day Care (QFT from an Onion article) |
Quote:
Amazing transformation isn't it. I guess he is still funny enough for younguns .. but his Delirious stuff was the funniest stuff I've ever heard (the 1st time I heard it, lol). |
Bob Schimmel. Very crude and swears constantly, but that's ok with me.
|
The people who are listing Dennis Leary might be interested in some of his earlier work, when he was called Bill Hicks.
|
Delirious was killer.
|
Gaffigan and Dmitri Martin are the two most recent facinations for me.
|
Quote:
His hamburger bit, can't remember if that was Delirious or Raw was not only funny as hell, but absolutely true. |
Quote:
I knew I was forgetting someone for my list. |
Quote:
Ding ding ding Still love Rescue Me though. |
Jon Glaser, Zach Galifianakis, David Cross, Patton Oswalt, Brian Posehn, Mitch Hedburg, Pablo Francisco, Brian Regan, Dave Attell, Arj Barker, Steven Wright, Jim Gaffigan, Steve Byrne, Todd Barry, Jeremy Hotz, Nick Swardson, Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor, Dennis Miller, Bill Hicks, Eddie Izzard.
Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head anyway. |
Quote:
I like George Lopez, Chris Rock, and Paul Rodriguez, what does that say about me? |
Someone mentioned Doug Stanhope... I was pretty impressed with his CD.
|
Jim Gaffigan is current at the top for me. Though I like Jerry Seinfeld, Lewis Black, and Eddie Izzard a lot as well.

Saw Emo at the Newbury Comedy Festival last year - always liked him and he was class. I don't think many of the younger crowd got the humour though. Also big fan of Daniel Kitson, Jerry Sadowitz, Frankie Boyle (at least from Mock the week, never seen him live), Ross Noble, but my top comedian is Tim Vine - they guy is so funny you end up being unable to breathe through laughing. And even stranger it's compeltely clean, family friendly. As far people posters on this board will likely know, Rich Hall, Steve Martin... |

But they do have the haircuts, so something filtered through :)

It was 15 years ago today that Sam Kinison died.
|
Anyone who likes standup and also has XM needs to listen to channel 150. I catch most of my standup there, hilarious stuff.
Schimmel is on there, hadn't heard of him prior, but he's hilarious. Also Stanhope, Bobby Collins, Bob Marley, Mike Birbiglia...the list goes on. |
Daniel Tosh's entire DVD is up on Youtube - hxxp://youtube.com/watch?v=7r5A4QG8iXM
More than worth checking out if you haven't heard him. |
Chris Rock
Rickey Smiley Kat Williams Gary Owen Bruce Bruce Dave Chapelle |
OK, my off the top of my head list is, in no particular order:
Richard Pryor, Sam Kennison (RIP), George Carlin, Sarah Silverman. But the next guy on the list hasn't had a mention, so let me tell you about Sean Cullen. I had never heard of him until last January when I went on a Barenaked Ladies cruise with my wife and another couple. Sean opened for Harlan Williams (also funny, but not nearly as), and looked like he had come up on stage without having given any thought to what he was going to say. After about 2 minutes of amusing but uninspired rambling, he launched into the most ridiculous and thoroughly hilarious diatribe about how tragic it is that mice are not capable of making their own cheese. We laughed so hard I could feel my pulse throbbing in my temples. I was wishing he'd take a breath so my sides might stop hurting so much. I think he spent about 15 minutes or so on stage, but it was absolutely the funniest thing I've ever heard. He headlined two nights later, and the highlight for me was when he was sharing his fondness for engaging in hand-to-hand combat with various sea creatures, such as squid and halibut. I do not exagerrate when I say that I was crying real tears during at least two different segments of his show. What's weird, though, is I can't find any clips on the interwebs that recapture the magic of those two routines. There's some quirky and funny Cullen stuff, but nothing approaching the heights attained those two nights, IMO. Maybe he was just in a groove? I don't know, but I highly recommend seeing him live if you ever get the chance. |
Is Paul Rodriguez the "Mexican Express" guy?
|
Im loving Flight of the Concords, a musical comedy duo
|
Chappelle
Daniel Tosh Mitch Hedberg old Carlin Chris Rock David Cross |
Daniel Tosh - Funny guy, and has some great jokes
Flight Of The Conchords Bill Hicks George Carlin - Legend period. Lewis Black - Great Comic and almost a legend in my eyes. Paul_Mooney - Yes this man is a genius. Jim Norton - Outrageous. Going to the Improv tonight to check out the new guys. |

Lewis Black
Dave Attell Mitch Hedburg Mike Birbiglia Bill Cosby George Carlin Pablo Francisco Flight of the Conchords Ron White On New Year's Eve 2003, I got to see Lewis Black, Dave Attell, Mitch Hedburg, and Mike Birbiglia in Philly, at Tower Theater. Sixth row center. Greatest show I've ever been to. I just saw Black for the third time about a month ago, in Stamford. It was a birthday present from my girlfriend. There was a guy who opened for him, seemed to be a Lewis Black clone. Angry, not as funny, but there were some moments that had me going. By the way, the hardest I've *ever* laughed was during a rant Lewis Black had on golf during this latest show. My girlfriend thought I was going to pass out from lack of oxygen, because I kept laughing so hard. |
As much as I love standup comedy, I've never actually been to a show. I have seen some comedians on TV, and I've listened to some CDs, but that's it. I'm going to Las Vegas in July, and I think I'm going to see George Wallace. I've liked his stuff on television, so I think I'll check his show out.
Oh, yeah, and I like a lot of the other folks that you've all mentioned in this thread. I can't stand Flight of the Conchords because the face on that Jemaine fellow freaks me out. I'm sure they're funny, but I simply can't watch them. I AM SO SHALLOW |
Actually going to see Eddie Izzard in a couple weeks.
|
I'm only going to mention those I've seen live so far that I've enjoyed.
Jeff Dunham Pablo Francisco Mitch Fatel Daniel Tosh All great comedians. Can't wait to see Lewis Black Jim Gaffigan Dennis Miller Stephen Lynch Demetri Martin |
Oh damn, I forgot, and can't believe no one has included Larry Miller, I really want to see him too!

For a nice sampler platter of funny people, watch the Comedians of Comedy live at the Troubadour. I don't think there was one i didn't laugh at at least a little.

Next Friday for me. The only big name comedians I have seen live are George Carlin and Stephen Lynch (and Lynch is a bit of a stretch to say "big name"). |
Going to see Dane Cook tomorrow, really looking forward to it
|
Louis C.K has really become to top guy in the last few years. Just constantly knocking out homers.

Ouch. |
Dola.
Have fun though. :) |
Has anyone listened to Russell Peters? He's hosting Comedyfest here in Chicago this month, and I think he's just brilliant.

I just saw a special of his on Comedy Central the other night and I had never seen him do stand-up before... I was just dying throughout the whole show. It was great. And I am not usually a big stand-up fan. |
I heard my favorite stand-up comedian, Daniel Tosh, is getting some sort of show. One person said it was gonna be similar to Demitri Martin's, the other said it was gonna be him on the internet making fun of movies. Either way, sounds great.
EDIT - apparently 1st episode was last night. Oops, hope it was good. |
I don't get Demitri Martin. I saw a bit of his show, and it was like a bad sketch comedy attempt at replicating that Vote For Pedro movie.
|
Quote:
I saw a bit of it, he was interviewing the Afro Ninja Backflip guy. Wasn't very funny. |
Demetri Martin... definitely a taste you have or don't.
Tosh's show... I can easily see devolving into interviews where he has 1-2 hilarious, original comments, but no one (including me) at this point wants to watch a 5 minute+ interview for that one line... Put him in Conan's old place in late-night and he would kill. |
Love Demetri Martin... his These Are Jokes album is great.
|

I'm a big Steven Wright fan. Got to see him when he came to Louisville once. Love his stuff. I also like: Lewis Black Ron White Jeff Foxworthy |
Quote:
+1 I saw Doug Stanhope at a small little bar in DC several months ago. His mother had just committed suicide, he spent the entire show in a drunken haze, and really should have just stayed at home that night. :( |
Izzard - had no idea so many others were onto him. always felt like he was on of those guys I liked that no one else knew about.
Mike Birbiglia - cracker, please Patton Oswalt - his stand up is so 180 degrees away from his character on King of Queens, made it that much funnier. Brian Regan - he kills me and my kids know every word. Ron White - saw him before all the blue color stuff and I absolutely loved him. Tater Salad, classic Mitch Hedberg - I thought he was brilliant and tortured. Always felt like all the other guys I liked were doing their act, and Hedberg just actually thought and talked that way all the time. |
Wow, great thread for recomendations. I had heard Mike Birbiglia's stories on This American Life and never really realized he was a comedian instead of a commentator and I've been laughing my ass off on Youtube for the past thirty minutes.
Maybe this thread is as good a place as any to ask after a comedian who I have NO IDEA OF THE NAME OF. All I can say is he was on Conan, like, seriously, a decade ago? Maybe? And he made a joke about making a river of lava on the US-Candian border and turning the whole thing into a game show where if you got across you'd be in scott free. Anybody have ANY idea? |
