MST3K Fans (Mystery SciFi Theater)

I just saw this over on the Sports Gamer Blog. It is great to seethat this group is still at it. I remember sitting around in my dorm watching these back in the late 80s early 90s still very funny.

I guess I’ve been in an internet coma for the last year or so, but I came across a story about how the original guys from MST3K are going to start doing their thing again at a new site called Cinematic Titanic. What I didn’t know was how much has happened since the show ended. Joel went off to do his own thing during the main run of the show and is now going to run the Cinematic Titanic thing. Mike who took over for Joel now does a site called Riff Trax where they record DVD style commentary tracks for big name movies.

The primary ‘villian’ (Trace Beaulieu, who was also the first voice for the robot, Crow) for the show is going to be at CT along with his first (Josh Weinstein, who was also the first Tom Servo) and second ‘evil sidekick.’

Over at Riff Trax, they have the second version of Crow, the second Tom Servo, and a few of the other writers along with Mike…

Oh, and they have another site called Film Crew Online, where they parody old movies again as well.

Now, over at MST3K.com they are going to be doing a flash based series with the robots… with some of the other writers.

It’s just amazing to see how many of the people for that show… all ended up doing the same sorts of things 10 years later.

I watched a few of the Film Crew releases. Good to see some new MST3K, essentially (since the 3 people doing that are Mike, "Crow" and "Tom Servo")

I remember when Comedy Central would run MST3K every night at midnight. I loved those shows.

let's bring back usa up all nite while we are at it

Only if TBS brings back Night Flight.

I don't know if anyone has tried this out yet, but a friend of mine was talking about this. Basically, Mike and the voices of Tom and Crow put together mp3's (or some format) which you play alongside watching the DVD that basically an audio mst3k.

It actually works pretty smoothly. I love it. It makes my Netflix "past rentals" section extremely embarrassing, though. No, see, I wasn't renting "Crossroads" because I love Britney....

I always preferred Joel to Mike.

Still best parts were the technology exchanges.

I was kindof partial to Mike over Joel since I thought Joel was a bit more of a bastard.

I pretty much like them equally. They were both different characters.

:D

I can remember my first time I ran into that in real life and how amazed I was by it. Since I don't think we'd get enough responses for an entire thread I propose a Mt Rushmore of MST3K episodes.

1. Girls Town "are they all on the same cycle in Girls Town"?
2. Time of the Apes "if you eat me you'll be hungry in an hour"
3. Mitchell "Mitchell!!"

4. Waay too many to mention but honorable mention for Manos, the hands of fate with the Frank Zappa looking guy. I honestly can't see Kodos name and not say, "Kodos, the hands of fate" even though the real reference is obvious.

Yep, Joel was the dad and Mike was the big brother. I liked them both equally well but Mike Nelson is the most talented member of the group. He was the head writer.

Yeah Mike was more talented, but he was a bit of a bastage and he was the one who got rid of the invention exchanges which I loved.

Joel was an inventor, Mike was a janitor. The invention exchange really didn't make sense for the Mike character and the inventions IRL were created by Joel so they couldn't keep them quality anyway.

I tend to like the episodes that have running jokes. Really hard to just pick 4.

Space Mutiny

Soultaker

(Part 2 of 10. The entire episode is on YouTube)

I Accuse My Parents

(Part 3 of 10)

Godzilla vs Megalon (Jet Jaguar! and Rex Dart, Eskimo Spy!)

Axxon 11-05-2007 11:40 PM

The last two are definitely worthy choices. I am not familiar with soultaker though. Got to check that one out.

Axxon 11-05-2007 11:51 PM

Hehe, just watching the Soultaker clip and combining the running themes with one of my favorite devices of picking celebrities the actors look like. Here it's the Tanya Harding joke.

This was absolutely my favorite running theme in Warrior of the Lost world where we actually had the paper chase guy no one knows and the fake Jimmy Carter "Have some malaise suckers!"

One of my favorite lines ever on the show and one that younger watchers have no clue about. :)

sabotai 11-05-2007 11:59 PM

Soultaker was the first episode of Season 10. Space Mutiny is also from the Sci-Fi Channel era, season 8. Another from season 8 that I love is Prince Of Space, an old japanese sci-fi movie.

I'm not sure if I have seen Warrior of the Lost World yet. I missed a lot of the older ones due to Comcast not carrying Comedy Central for awhile. There's a good chance I have it on DVD somewhere, though. I have most of them on DVD (thanks eBay!), but still havene't seen many of them. I'll have to look for it and watch it if I have it.

EDIT: Nope, I don't have season 5.

Axxon 11-06-2007 12:09 AM

We are opposite there. I rarely had sci fi channel offered where I lived so I haven't seen many of these episodes but until I got robbed I had seasons 1-6 in their entirety.

Yep, season one. Met up with a very, very kind collector. Not their best work but it was fun to see anyway. The first Tom Servo was weird.

I really like Warrior of the Lost World and it's close to the top for me.

How about shorts? Gotta go with either Junior Rodeo or Posture Pals though there are waay too many here too.

BTW, there is only one episode I simply can't watch. The movie is just too bad. Can you guess which one it might be? :)

It's not Santa Claus vs the Martian. That one was so bad it was great just like the other Santa movie which the name escapes me. The one with Lupita.

That one was just called "Santa Claus". Another similar one from the Sci-Fi era was called Jack Frost. I think it was a russian movie. It's just so terrible that it's hilarious.

No, I liked Trumpy.

Here's a huge hint. It was a Coleman Francis flick.

I guess that would be either The Skydivers or Red Zone Cuba. I haven't seen the Red Zone Cuba episode yet. I thought The Skydivers episode was good, but I do remember thinking the movie was pretty painful to sit through.

Axxon 11-06-2007 12:49 AM

Yep, it was Red Zone Cuba. The movie was just so boring. Nothing really happens. Imagine the driving scenes from Manos but never ending and you'll get the idea.

Axxon 11-06-2007 01:22 AM

They have the entirety of girls of the Girls Town episode. Here's the title sequence which contains the joke I referenced above. I highly recommend this episode to anyone who hasn't seen it.

Some of those movies towards the end (Jack Frost is one of those) are so bad that they're almost unwatchable, even with the bots. I can't remember what it was but there was some move that I actually fell asleep to because the movie was so bad. Even with great commentary, you have to have something mildly watchable to make the show go. For instance, one of my favorite episodes is The Screaming Skull- the commentary is one of their best but the movie is awful so it's hard to watch.

Bonegavel 11-06-2007 11:22 AM

Greatest show ever and Joel is the man. Side Hacking was my favorite episode. Once Joel left, I lost interest though I do think Mike was watchable.

The Screaming Skull was my fall-asleep episode. The guys are hilarious, but there's only so much comedic mileage you can get out of characters standing around doing nothing, which was the entire movie.

I think the MST'ed "Hamlet" had that effect on most people as well, though for me, a huge English major Shakespeare geek, it was one of my top 5 episodes of all time.

I ran across this site and the guy sounds pretty good and like what he is doing. I am thinking of trying out his dds since the company rhino is committing highway robbery like most producers of tv season dvds nowadays. Anyways 25 dollars for aseason isn't bad. And for those of you who only like either Joel or Mike he has sets dedicate just to them. Out of the 198 episodes over 10 years that were made he sells 147 of the episodes. The 47 missing oones are the commercial ones sold at amazon.com. The fact that the MST 3000k guys haven't stopped this guy is a sign either they don't know or they have given their blessing which is what I am assuming. Anyways, if you are fans check it out:

http://www.valuemst3k.com/

sterlingice 11-17-2007 09:21 AM

Yeah, unfortunately, the DVD sets are highway robbery. They're basically $10 an episode.

Also, if you want to have more fun, look for Volume 10. It goes for $200 and more since it was pulled from production after a dispute of rights regarding Godzilla vs Megalon.

If you are looking for that this guy has it 212 - GODZILLA VS. MEGALON

sterlingice 11-17-2007 09:51 AM

I was seriously considering getting a set from this guy (when I was talking about highway robbery, I was referring to the Rhino sets). It's a series my wife and I both love and we haven't seen a lot of the earliest episodes. The only thing stopping me is that I'm a little concerned about the legal ramifications of buying a set.

I'm not sure I can name a favorite, but one that ranks up there for me and I watched time and time again was the one (can't remember the name) with Kathy Ireland in it, and had sort of a Mad Max vibe to it. Great stuff.

What's the quality like on the Rifftrax stuff? I've never tried one.

The answer I've read from Jim Mallon that his official position is that it's fine to resell the dvd's as long as the official dvds that Rhino sells ( which he gets the profit from ) aren't resold and all these guys seem to honor that.

He's not trying to rip people off but he has to rebuy the rights to the movies that they sell and it's too prohibitive to do with a lot of the movies and the ones he can afford he has to price accordingly.

sterlingice 11-17-2007 11:41 AM

Ok, now there's the other side of the story. The other sites I've read seem to paint Mallon as a bad guy who is hoarding the DVD rights to MST3K and trying to milk them for all their worth (whatever meager pitiance that may be ;) ). This makes a lot more sense.

I think its the Rhino guys who are screwing the MST3K fans since they determine the prcies. Also, I wouldn't worry to much about ramifications for buying them legally anyways.

Like I said, Mr Mallon disagreed with that but he may not have as full a handle on what's happening with his product as we do of course.

The first 3 were easy for me, but the last one could easily have been replaced with classics such Future War, Hobgoblins, Prince of Space, Jack Frost, Zombie Nightmare, Warrior of the Lost World etc

I'm a real sucker for "Overdrawn at the Memory Bank"- that might be my favorite. "Space Mutiny" gets a lot of screen time here as the running name gag is classic and the movie is bad but watchable.

I just picked up another couple of the old volumes for "cheap" (they'll appear on Amazon for <$30 every once in a while) and saw Hercules versus the Moon Men. That was pretty awesome with Deep Hurting/Sandstorm.

Going through the Rifftrax on the DVR. The first episode was a mixed bag. Funny, but really gross at times (I think one of their shows was some vet show about pulling things out of a dog's butt and I'm never looking at koalas the same again). The start of the second one with the vampire bats: awesome :D

What I mostly have learned is that a lot of what's on Nat Geo is more painful than Coleman Francis movies.

As for favorite MST3K episodes.. Overdrawn At The Memory Bank is awesome, I also really like Squirm, Sidehackers, Puma Man, Teenagers From Outer Space, The Beatniks, Girl in Gold Boots, Warrior of the Lost World, Kitten With a Whip, Laserblast, Prince of Space and Soultaker.

I think my top 3 would be Puma Man, Squirm and Overdrawn. Warrior of the Lost World and Laserblast are close.

Ok, finished the vampire bats one and it was excellent. It was what I envisioned when I first heard about this.

I'll let Joel answer this one

Quote:

3. Why is there a new cast? I want the old cast back. It's not MST3K without them.

I've gotten a lot of messages asking – or complaining – about the decision to bring in a new cast. This came up a few times on Tuesday during my Reddit AMA, but I don't know if I explained it as well as I'd like, so I want to take another minute to talk about this.

The funny thing is, this isn't the first time we've gotten these complaints.

When we first imagined Mystery Science Theater 3000 back in 1988, my hope was to launch a show that, in success, could be as enduring as Saturday Night Live. We had a simple format that could evolve over time, with each new generation of actors and writers finding their own take on the basic concept.

If MST3K hadn't gotten canceled fifteen years ago, it’s possible we could have had 4 or 5 hosts by now, and it would be just like Doctor Who: even if you had "your Doctor," you'd still be able to appreciate the different flavors that each new Host or Mad or robot added to the show. It's part of what makes a show like Doctor Who or SNL last. I’m a Tom Baker fan myself, and no one is funnier than Dan Aykroyd. (To me.)

The problem is that MST3K got canceled after just two hosts, and instead of becoming a proud tradition, some audiences started to see it as a competition between "Team Joel" and "Team Mike." I think that if MST3K had lasted long enough to have a third host, this wouldn't have happened. It makes me sad that it did.

When I first left MST3K and Mike took over as host, some of you said you were done watching – not because he was bad, but because he was different. Then, once the shock wore off, a lot of you realized he brought something new and great to the job. Many of you even liked his episodes better! And when Kevin took over as Tom Servo, there was hate mail, but for many of you he became the definitive Servo! I could go on.

So yeah, we've been through this before, and I get it. Different can be scary, especially if you really loved the old seasons. But just think: if you had never given Mike or Kevin or Bill or Frank or Mary Jo a chance in their roles, you'd have almost 100 fewer episodes of MST3K to enjoy today. I'm not asking you to like the next cast better than the last one, but I hope you'll give them a chance, and see what they can do.

Then, when their time is up, I hope you'll give the next cast a chance too.

Anyway, I think we've found great new people to act as our next Host, Mad, Crow and Servo, and I'll introduce you to all of them before the end of our Kickstarter. And if the old cast are up for it, we'll look for ways to bring their old characters back for cameos. (Anything's possible! Even Servo and Crow could have "software glitches" from time to time and temporarily boot with their older personalities.) But the reason I hope a lot of the old team will come back is to help guide the next generation as they learn the ropes.

Here's the thing: I don't want us to make a whole different MST3K. We love the old seasons for a reason, and so did you. But I also don't want us to make the same exact MST3K again either.

As I've said before, it's like Heisenberg's uncertainty principle as applied to MST3K: if it doesn't change, it's not the same show. So to stay the same, we need to keep changing. Make sense?

Is there really no room left in your heart for a third host?

Peregrine 11-30-2015 08:08 PM

I'm willing to give a new host a shot - I mean to be totally honest Joel is looking pretty old these days. :P

Julio Riddols 12-01-2015 12:18 AM

I'm good with whatever. quality riffing is key to me.

NobodyHere 12-09-2015 12:18 PM

We're up to 9 episodes right now with just a couple days left. RAM chips for everyone!

There's just a couple days left on the kickstarter to raise 1.1 more dollars to get the full 12 episode season so donate a little, won't you?

Joel will also be hosting a telethon on youtube this friday evening as well for anyone interested.

NobodyHere 12-11-2015 04:40 PM

And we now have 12 new episodes.

Today is the last day of the kickstarter, so Joel and company are having a telethon later today. Joel also announced a new stretch goal of 5.9 million. If that total is met then we get a special Xmas episode.

NobodyHere 12-11-2015 09:32 PM

Penn Gillette has lost a LOT of weight

Julio Riddols 12-11-2015 11:02 PM

Yeah, like 120 pounds in 4 months.

NobodyHere 12-12-2015 12:07 AM

Well I'm frickin lovin this day. I finished my Bachelor's degree. 14 episodes of Mst3k have been funded. Also I been sitting around with my friend Jack Daniels. What could be better.

Also I believe MST3K has been the biggest kickstarter for any film/show ever beating out Veronica Mars.

Butter 12-12-2015 01:22 PM

I still say "Packers! Woo!" at times when I see a big crowd rushing around.

NobodyHere 02-14-2017 04:37 PM

Season 11 debuts tonight at a special screening. I wish I could go.

Netflix might be getting the new episodes by late March.

NobodyHere 04-13-2017 08:57 PM

I'm 4 episodes in and I'm absolutely lovin the new season so far. I'm hoping Jonah gets a second season.

Julio Riddols 04-13-2017 11:59 PM

Excited to sit down with this tonight on Netflix.

Shkspr 04-14-2017 02:02 AM

WE'VE GOT MOVIE SIGN!!!!

Julio Riddols 04-14-2017 04:17 AM

Remarkable how much it feels familiar. Seems like they really took their time and put the work in to make it as magical as it was back in the day, and even with a new cast it doesn't seem like they have missed a beat. I'm quite pleased.

booradley 04-30-2017 11:33 AM

I've just started watching this, and it's terrif. I might even enjoy it a tad more than the originals

Ragone 05-04-2017 07:38 PM

I've tried 4 times to watch first episode, fallen asleep before they get into the theater every time..

CrimsonFox 05-04-2017 08:51 PM

I enjoyed the new season immensely. I'd put just about all the episodes in the top 50 percentile of good episodes. However with that said I don't think any of the new episodes would make my Mount Rushmore of MST3k episodes.

Julio Riddols 05-06-2017 06:55 AM

Yeah, not quite any best of's, but I loved the Hercules one and I think the second or 3rd episode. That Hercules movie was just incredibly awful.

booradley 05-07-2017 09:46 AM

I'm in the middle of "Starcrash", with David Hasselhoff. Lots of beauties in skimpy outfits, but other than that this is the worst movie ever made. Has. To. Be.

ColtCrazy 05-08-2017 09:14 AM

Up to episode 12 on it. Reptilicus was a great episode as was Starcrash. I've enjoyed the series overall.

Suicane75 05-09-2017 02:43 PM

A very little touch, but I love the "ad breaks".

Suicane75 05-16-2017 08:23 PM

My lord. Hercules and that South Korean Godzilla knockoff, back to back, torture.

NobodyHere 05-16-2017 08:55 PM

Just wait til you get to the Wizards of the Lost Kingdom movies!

WHY were there two? Who in their right mind could have come within sniffing distance of the first and thought - "Oh yeah, let's do two!"?

Carradine, I guess ...

Concorde Pictures [us]

Just check the list of other classics from the U.S. distributor for these. Talk about flashbacks, I remember several of their catalog from the constant presence on video rental shelves. Movies that {sniff} never got taken home.

Ryche 05-17-2017 09:05 PM

Live show in town on my birthday!

NobodyHere 04-07-2021 04:22 PM

For any MSTies still left on this board:

Joel is at it again!

Let's Make More MST3K & Build THE GIZMOPLEX!

Basically your average kickstarter to fund the creation of more episodes. It looks like they're halfway to their first milestone even though it has only been an hour.

I can think of worse ways to blow my tax refund.

NobodyHere 04-08-2021 04:22 PM

Looks like they hit their first goal of 2 million already.

It took the last campaign nearly a week to hit that mark. They did it here in just over a day.

Galaril 04-09-2021 06:50 AM

Yeah that is awesome. Looks like they are going to have their own streaming app I assume you would pay a monthly fee to watch movies or buy them on demand and view them there. I own most of the movies already so probably wouldn’t use this but great if they make more episodes.

NobodyHere 05-04-2021 07:30 PM

Third milestone has been hit

Which means at least 9 new episodes, one of which will be hosted by Joel. I guess they're going for multiple hosts this season, one of whom is Emily Marsh, who was involved in their live tour.

I'm looking forward to the "telethon" Friday evening. Hopefully they can meet their 4th and final milestone!

sterlingice 05-04-2021 07:51 PM

Space Mutiny, eh?

SI

sabotai 05-04-2021 08:48 PM

Thick McRunfast

NobodyHere 05-06-2021 08:45 PM

Less than $200k to go until 12 episodes. They should be able to nail it considering they raised over a million dollars on their last "telethon". Hopefully Joel announces extra episodes like he did last time.

Galaril 05-06-2021 10:11 PM

So not sure how this benefits those of us who own all the MST3k episodes and also with Twitch channels for both Rifftrax and MST3k I really would only be interested in getting season 13 dvd set at some point. If this means they keep rolling out new episodes that is great.
