I miss Marmel.

Nostalgia and lack of sleep make me sappy, but I miss him. :(

Is that ok to say publicly?

molson 06-13-2008 02:29 AM

Looking back at the last days of Marmel, I think the board is in a much better place today. I'm not sure how it happened exactly, but I'm glad we don't have threads like that every month anymore.

Neuqua 06-13-2008 02:32 AM

That's weird you said that. I was thinking of him just earlier today too, wondering what he was up to.

INot only do I miss him on FOFC, but I really miss the JBL. Dr. Sak, Marm's wife randomly showing up during live sims, Carp vs. Tigers, everyone hating me, etc. I miss it all.

Dr. Sak 06-13-2008 05:45 AM

Schmidty I found some old clips that I use to use on the JBL Live. I actually sent them to Smolen over IM. We were laughing at how old they were and the fun we use to have with the JBL.

By the way I am still the champ in the JBL! Long live the Yakult Swallows!

Lorena 06-13-2008 08:04 AM

Yeah I miss him too. Ant and I got to know him and his wife when we played City of Heroes.

Hope he comes back :(

No but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express with her before!

Quite likely changing a diaper.

His constant whining about the moderation got pretty old. I did enjoy double-crossing him in FOFC Survivor though. :)

His constant "threats" to leave the board were pretty annoying too. That's right up there with announced message board retirements in ridiculousness.

Yeah, I miss Marmel alot. Being the co-commish, we were always talking behind the scenes... the JBL is probably the most fun multi league of any sport in which I've ever been involved.

JeeberD 06-13-2008 04:17 PM

Marm was da bomb... :(

korme 06-13-2008 04:18 PM

On a tangent, the JBL has been closed for probably 3+ real life years now and I can still remember most of the owners

Orix BlueWave-me
Fukuoka Daiei Hawks - Chief Rum
Nippon Ham Fighters - Neuqua
Kobe Surpass - ScottVib
Yokohama BayStars - Swaggs
Yakult Swallows - bsak16
Hanshin Tigers - Schmidty
Hiroshima Toyo Carp - Marmel
Kintetsu Buffaloes - smolen22
Chunichi Dragons -
Yomiuri Giants - vtbub?
Chiba Lotte Marines - asamford
Seibu Lions - Alan T?

What are the teams/owners I'm missing?

DanGarion 06-13-2008 04:24 PM

I miss Shorty, what ever happened to him...

Seibu was Koji
Chunichi was Drew

Schmidty 06-13-2008 05:34 PM

We used to talk about getting the JBL back together, but that kind of fizzled. I really wish we could somehow still do it. Soes anyone still have the final League file anymore, and if so, would it be convertible to OOTP8?

Hello Schmidty. :) I have been lurking the forum since I heard about the switch on the FOBL forums a week or so ago. Mostly the FOF strategy section since I have been playing solo again lately. (Shout out to, I think, RedKingGold for his draft combine thread over there by the way).

I don't ever recall threatening to leave the forum, I just said I was, and did. Yes, I bitched about the moderating here, but I think I only actually started 1 or 2 threads about it, at the most. It wasn't only the moderating, but at the time every thread just seemed to stray way off topic into an inside joke fest, which wasn't even very funny. It annoyed me to no end, I found myself visiting less and less, and whatever it was that set me off just made it like a good time to leave.

So these days, I follow the FOFL very closely, as well as post a little over there. I post a bit at the Straight Dope (under a different name). I post a bit over at the Syracuse sports message boards as well. You can find me most nights on City of Heroes (Protector Server), still, as well as my wife, but she doesn't play as much these days.

Oh, and we had our first kid on Sunday morning. :)

The JBL was easily the best online league ever created. I still feel bad I burned out on the commissioner job and the league folded. I'll have to search for some files, but I highly doubt I have any.

JeeberD 06-13-2008 06:20 PM

Congrats on the kiddo, Marm! Nice of you to drop by...

I was Sapparo before I had to quit because of divorce/life issues/etc way back when. I think Dang took over my powerhouse of a team from there!

He is Baltimore in the RWBL still, and currently kicking Sean's Toronto Blue Jay butt.

Yes and I did such an excellent job that I let Brian win every season after I joined...

Marmel 06-13-2008 07:57 PM

Swaggs and I had some real epic battles in the playoffs. As much as I hated Schmidty's Tigers, I always felt the Stars were my biggest rivals.

Chief Rum 06-13-2008 09:08 PM

Marmel! The JBL! :)

Good times were had by all. I do miss that league, and fighting it out with smolen and Shorty (and later ScottVib) in division every year. Plus, I always seemed to play Koji's Seibu squad when I managed to escape the division.

Good to hear from you, Marm, and I am happy to hear of the new addition. Hope to see you around more.

I was a little surprised the JBL disbanded. I don't know what the circumstances were, but it seemed like a strong league. If you guys were on v5, you can at the least convert through v6/6.5. I can't recall if 2007 can import from v5, but it should at least be able to do v6.

We were using 6.x at the time, so if someone had the last league file we could convert it to 8 and get it going at anytime.

Well, I found the file. The league is just sitting there with Yakult as the Champs and the Proceed to next season button just waiting to be pushed. The only problem is, I have no idea what the league password was. Shorty? Scott Vib? Anyone???

Marmel 06-13-2008 11:33 PM

Sadly, Hiroshi doesn't show up on the list of players. His player number must have been re-used or some weird thing...so the file is not perfect, but it is usable if we could reset the password somehow.

Oh, and it appears 'Lucky' Lucien Burchard and Eddie Mac are still lovers. :)

Hiroshi should be wiped from the books anyway. Dirty 'roid freak. And trading Lucky was one of the toughest things I've ever done in an online league.

I would be really pumped if we could get any semblance of the old JBL going again. Hell, even my lazy ass would volunteer if no one else wanted to.

Forgot about Lucky. You're right, Schmidty, that was one tough negotiation. We never did get to the promised land with him, although we came close (didn't finally win it all until the second to last year).

Alan T 06-14-2008 06:32 AM

It's got to happen. JBL was the greatest league ever. I remember being totally depressed when I heard Marm was shutting it down, and no one else stepped up (including me).

Even if we lose most, or all, of the history, it'd be awesome to get the same group of guys together, and start a new JBL.

Alan T 06-14-2008 08:01 PM

I would love to get back in it if it started back up, but I'm guessing Dangarion and I would have to thumb wrestle for it since he took over my team when I had to stop online play for a while!

Dr. Sak 06-14-2008 08:02 PM

You can have my team Alan. I'll just become the official "Voice" of the JBL.

I'd take another team, like the Swallows, since I know Brian doesn't play anymore...

Marmel 06-14-2008 08:15 PM

I only have OOTP 6.5, but I would take over the Carp or any other team whether we start fresh or somehow use the current file I have. Somebody just needs to take the reigns and get something started. I'll help however I can (I have the Japanese name files and team logos still). If somebody wants to get this started email me: cusefan95 AT comcast DOT net

Swaggs 06-14-2008 10:45 PM

If we're getting the band back together, I'm in with the Stars.

sachmo71 06-14-2008 10:46 PM

What are you hero names on Protector, Marm?

korme 06-15-2008 02:11 PM

Dude when I had that combo of Hiroshi & Hisashi as the 1-2 aces, I should have been a champion many a time... but no titles? Weak sauce.

korme 06-15-2008 02:12 PM

Getting it back together, I don't have 6.5 anymore, only the last 2 versions of OOTP... no one wants to upgrade?

I have 6.5 as well as the last version and pre-ordered for the new one coming out. I'm game for anything though, I just miss the people who made the league great.

Chief Rum 06-15-2008 02:33 PM

My 6.5 was giving me such problems (mostly licensing) I had to basically disappear from the RWBL because of it. So 6.5 is a non-starter for me. I have pre-ordered OOTP2009, though.

smolen22 06-15-2008 08:26 PM

Well I'd play, but can only do so if the league upgraded. I had to leave the leauge because I'm now a mac only man.

I don't know why that league was so much more fun then any other, but it sure was.

By the way: look at all those kintetsu titles in that list.

Dr. Sak 06-15-2008 08:39 PM

I just talked to Dr Jap...he said that he'll give up a lifestyle of screwing hookers if the JBL comes back.

oh snap a smolen22 sighting! smolen, do you realize if we rebirthed the jbl, me and you would have to have our teams married if we wanted updated teams (osaka kintetsu and orix merged and are now the orix buffaloes.. ain't that some crap)

Drew 06-16-2008 09:04 AM

The proud Chunichi Dragons franchise has never stopped playing, and indeed, we're finally the best team in the league by default. I guess it's something...

I just wish someone could find the talking Takashi Hiroshi. I still laugh any time I think about that.

And Pittsburgh Joe.

I think we just missed you too much, Schmidty-poo.

Looks like most of the band is back together. If someone was willing to do all of the work, I'd totally be down for some JBL. My 20-year plan was just coming around, plus, I really wanted to be able to make a Hall Of Fame argument for my insanely effective relief pitcher, whose name I unfortunately can't recall. It's been too long.

Marmel 06-17-2008 01:43 PM

An old friend supplied the password for the file, so the league can continue or it can just start up fresh. Sounds like the best option would be to use the upcoming version of OOTP. I was not planning on buying it, but would if the league gets going again.

I only want to be a team owner, so somebody would have to step up as a commish and get the ball rolling.

Those were classic! I also rather enjoyed reading what Hiroshi had to say in the forum. He was really starting to get a good grip on the English language.

Drew 06-17-2008 01:51 PM

With the league file located and unlocked, I'd sure like to use that, instead of the suggestion on the RWBL forums of using the nippon leagues already in the RWBL. The old JBL had history. I refuse to acknowledge any league that doesn't include Burandi "Bukkake" Bokkai.

It sounded like Schmidty wasn't opposed to the idea of possibly stepping up.. but I'm not sure if he was just toying with the idea or not though.

Scottvib also threw out the suggestion of possibly running it as a league under the RWBL in 2008 (where you had simultaneous leagues running at the same time in the same universe so to speak)..

I personally don't care one way or another how it is done myself, I think most people just like the idea of the group getting back together and just want to pick the easiest way that everyone would be happy with.

Or Jizz Morie!! The strikeout leader for a single season.

Ha! I remember how the punishment for not being at a live sim was getting your player's nicknames fucked with. :D

I remember when that started, but I don't remember much else about that.. I don't even remember what team I was there.. It didn't last long though I don't think.... if I even remember correctly.

Wasn't that something that Andy did, or was that you?

Dr. Sak 06-17-2008 02:05 PM

Koji and I had the LABL (Latin American Baseball League) which you might be thinking of.

The late night one was just 8 of us.

That must have been before I joined the JBL.

I almost quit the JBL two or three times... :)

I don't remember the Latin American Baseball league.. I was one of the few that did the late night one.. I just honestly don't remember much about it. :)

I would do it if no one else will, but I'd rather not. I've never commished before, and I'm not sure I'd be the right person to do it. I'd try though.

Are we all committing to using OOTP9? That's only reason I'd buy the fucking game, but I'd do it for the JBL.

Wasn't my team called the Crusty Labia or something?

korme 06-17-2008 04:00 PM

I kind of like the idea of running it simulataneously with another league, but if that means our old history is wiped out, no dice.

This is precisely my sentiment.

DanGarion 06-17-2008 05:28 PM

I'd like to do it in OOTP9, and it sounds like we are going to do it outside of the RWBL. This means us that are in both the RWBL and JBL will have to have both OOTP7/8 and OOTP9. :) Hopefully that will push the RWBL to OOTP9 sooner rather then later...

I have OOTP9 pre-ordered anyways, so doesn't really matter to me which we run it on. Whatever works for everyone is cool with me
