Ping: Movie Watchers
I needed help with a work related project. I am looking for any movies which involves someone sacrificing for another or a group of persons. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
*cough* Star Trek II
Something like Braveheart maybe?
Ladder 49
First one that came to mind for me was Armageddon
Chronicles of Narnia
Hardware Wars
The Excorcist
SpiderMan 2 |
Titanic ;)
John Q The Matrix (the first one, maybe - the third for sure) |
Pay it forward
Movie with Dr. J. Kid goes to a nuclear missle silo on a field trip. Decides Nuclear bombs are bad and quits playing baseball. His story hits the news and all these pro athletes quit playing. His friend gets murdered, so the kid quits talking. Then every kid in the world quits talking. It was made in the late 70s, early 80s. Great flick. |

Not sure what you mean by "sacrifice", but Red Beard by Akira Kurosawa comes to mind. A young and talented doctor is forced to work at a hospital for the poor by his dad. Very, very touching movie, and one of Kurosawa's best.
Star Wars: A New Hope (Obi-Wan)
The beginning of Executive Decision
Breakfast Club: John Bender takes the rap when all the kids sneak out of the library and reek havoc around the school. :)

"The Fellowship of the Ring" (Gandalf)
The Passion of the Christ?
*ducks* |
I am Legend

Suicide bombing saves the day. I thought that was a very interesting post-9/11 ending. |
Thanks for the help guys. Have a few movies to watch. Hopefully one of these will inspire the boss man enough to show to the team. Keep them coming if you think of any more. Boss Man is never satisfied.
Wouldn't any war movie fit this category? Every soldier, no matter what side, is sacrificing their own life for the benefit of their fellow countrymen.

Quote:
Yeah, but you shouldn't have to explain it. His boss probably wants a clip of 5 minutes that shows an obvious and direct sacrifice of one for the good of others. |
Backdraft
Independence Day
Saving Private Ryan

In this one doesn't the group die for the sake of 1? |
Quote:
Yeah, this scene kicks ass and if any of you know my boss here at Rutgers Football, he digs axes too. I only wish Bull would've died right away, but I can edit it that way I suppose. I also like the end of Man of Fire where he exchanges himself for the girl |

Alright, I'm done now. BAD! |
Okay Mrs what is the name of the book again?
The original title was I am Legend - but who Robert was (not military, not a scientist), who the "vampires" were, their intelligence level (they were all highly intelligent in the book), the reason he died, all these were different in the book than in the movie, changing the entire story. The reason he was Legend was changed entirely. I decided I would not read another book before a movie because of that frustration (if I know the movie is coming out). LOL
:) |
wasnt it Omega man?
A Tale of Two Cities comes to mind.
From Wikipedia:
I Am Legend is a 1954 science fiction novel by Richard Matheson about the last man alive in a future Los Angeles, California. The novel was a success and was adapted to film as The Last Man on Earth in 1964, as The Omega Man in 1971, and again in 2007 as I Am Legend. |

Thanks for this! I want to see the older versions of the movie adaptation now to compare. :) |
Cassablanca
Strange Brew
Krull
Dodgeball
Kate takes a ball to the stomach so the best player can stay in the game. |
Did anyone say Star Wars: ROTJ yet? You know...Vadar at the end and all...

Because the Cyclops, right? |

Joe vs. the Volcano.
Okay, umm, Sommersby? Richard Gere gets himself strung up so the townspeople (including former slaves) can keep their property.
I think I heard someone say Armageddon. Better answer: Deep Impact. The shuttle crew saves virtually the whole frikkin planet.
Children of Men
Quote:
I'd almost say Obi-Wan was a bigger sacrifice in Star Wars |
Glory
Amazing Grace and chuck Perhaps?
Stand And Deliver is also a personal favorite |
Quote:
Meh...what sacrifice? He knew if he was struck down he would "become more powereful than you could ever imagine." |
He never did any good back there, anyways. Wait...wrong character. :)
U-571
There is a scene where a crew member has to swim underwater inside the sub past a point where he can return in order to free up the torpedo for firing. He knows he's going to die yet does it when ordered to do so. |
The first officer saving Sean Connery in The Hunt for Red October
Schindler's List
The Road Warrior
The Producers
The Longest Yard (1974 version, not shitty remake)
Army of Darkness

Gimme some sugar Baby. |
SO what yer all saying is that this plot gimiick of "sacrifice" is overused and pretty much crap now?
Iron Giant: "You are what you choose to be." "Superman."
That movie was on again tonight, and I still get choked up at the end as he's launching himself to catch the missile. And Alan, this is another one that you daughter would like if she hasn't seen it already. :) |
Quote:
I wouldn't say that at all. Maybe you were being sarcastic, but if you weren't, it's always good to have visual reminders (even if it is just a movie) of the good in people and the willingness to put others first. |
