Offensive QOTM
I was just reading another thread and noticed the sig of albionmoon. It says:
Quote:
I have to say that I never really pay attention to the QOTM, but when I looked sure enough it is there. That really is an offensive statement. It may be time to purge the database again. |
I personally don't think it's that offensive, and I sincerely hope we don't start censoring QOTMs for political correctness.
|
Taken on it's own, without any context, I think it is offensive.
Of course, so are a large percentage of the other quotes. |
Quote:
I'm not talking about poltical correctness. I'm talking about a quote that is just down right offensive. This is equal to a racially offensive quote. |
The quote isn't funny and advocates genocide. This isn't about censorship - leave the post on the board - just don't make it a QOTM.
|
I'm more offended by the poor attempt at humor than by the content. Inserting hip phrases like "try and step" doesn't automatically make a mundane statement fizz-unny-izzle.
|
offensive quotes to remove from page one:
I like my women chunky. I like my men meaty. - Makes fun of fat people. Get rid of it $1,000,099.99 for a vagina carrot? Either someone's playing a cruel joke or we have one really lonely millionaire. - SAYS VAGINA! One must not underestimate the power of Chinese Tickle Torture. - Links the Chinese with torture. There's an unneeded sterotype. One day I'D like have an intern. One who could give really good blowjobs and talk baseball. Not at the same time. That would be weird. - Diminishes Interns everywhere. I vote we use every illegal weapon we find in Iraq on France. - Supports hurting the French. Hey, those guys are people too! I tried to be cocky AND funny, but, like usual, my cock was just too large. - he said ccccc COCK If I woke up as a woman, I'd want my control over my emotions back. - I am sure women find this offensive. Chicks dig the pulling guard pancake blocks... - PANCAKES! |
dola,
I would list more, but my tears make it hard to read the quotes. |
Agreed with John Galt.
It doesn't need to be purged from the board, but should not be a quote of the moment. |
So, if someone says that they support the killing of all black people in a funny way, we should make that a QOTM?
|
I've been in favor of culling the quote herd for awhile now.
I'm not a big fan of seeing "Subby is Greek for ham-fisted cunt" emblazoned across the top of the BB, as well as some of the other ones. That's not censorship, that's my opinion as a member of the FOFC community. Ultimately, though, I guess it rests with SkyDog. |
what if we change Mecca by Jerusalem ? you still don't find it offensive ?
|
Quote:
how funny? |
Quote:
Somehow, I find your response funnier than anything I've seen in the QOTM. |
I really don't like the QOTM feature here. Very few of the quotes are funny or meaningful out of context.
|
Quote:
I find it very difficult to be offended by what someone says on an internet message board. |
Quote:
yes i agree |
I had the word 'fuck' in my sig at one time and a mod asked me (told me) to remove it. Hopefully the same is done in this situation, regardless of my thoughts on the subject.
|
"I had the word 'fuck' in my sig at one time and a mod asked me (told me) to remove it."
Damn, that's fucked up. And I agree that it should be removed. I've seen other QOTM's that were far less offensive that were removed. Now, I'm not SkyDog, so I don't know if he removed them because they were offensive or because he didn't find them funny. But the fact remains that most people seem to want the quote gone, so he should make it gone... And of course, I wonder who the racist bastard who put that quote there is. ;) DISCLAIMER: That last statement was a joke. |
I would like to see the QOTM removed since I can't have the option to remove it for my own personal preferences. This is a feature that should not be forced on people. I don't find them funny, interesting or necessary.
|
Quote:
Either way, I don't care if it's removed or not. If you've read most the shit I've written you'd probably know there was nothing racist or overly offensive. There isn't much I find really offensive, though I can understand cases where something could be considered offensive to someone who is more sensative about such subjects. Hell, I didn't even think someone would put that up for quote of the moment, so it really doesn't matter to me if it stays or goes. |
Quote:
A fair test I suppose, but a majority of who? There are only 12 or so people in this thread. |
Well, frankly, I personally find that quote offensive, but not because it has any sort of "racist" connotation. I find it no more racist than "only in America can a poor black kid grow up to be a rich white woman." Both refer to race, but neither is racist, imho. I DO, however, prefer that there not be vulgarities in the QOTM, in signatures or in thread titles. However, this isn't a board that I started up myself, so I don't want to impose MY morality on the board in its entirety.
Since I took over the board, I have sat down a couple of times to write out a set of rules, but I've gotta tell you, it is VERY difficult to do so on an existing board that usually polices itself. Since we're discussing this in this thread, let me just throw out what I mentioned for discussion: How WOULD everyone feel about a "no vulgarities in thread titles, QOTM's or signatures" rule? (I'm defining "vulgarities" as the more "hardcore" words--"shit", '"fuck", "blowjob", "pussy", "cock", "dick", etc. and any of their derivatives.) How does that grab y'all? |
"A fair test I suppose, but a majority of who? There are only 12 or so people in this thread."
Obviously not the majority of all registered users...to use an anology, only those who vote have their voices count. So I guess in this case, the majority of those who bothered to reply. Those who don't reply, I take that as a sign as they counldn't care less either way. SkyDog, I would agree with that. |
You really can't just censor certain words because there has to be an intention behind them to be considered offensive. In other words, what if a members name was Dick and we said that he couldn't use that word on the board?
|
Quote:
Well, I don't find it offensive (but I know the context of the quote in the thread). |
Quote:
I am alright with that, even though it eliminates half of my vocabulary and almost all of the words I can spell. Quote:
Come on Sabbi, think about that for a sec.... |
Quote:
Are we really to expect that every one of the 2,756 members would have visited this thread since it's incarnation only 3 1/2 hours ago? I hate to say this but maybe a poll is in order. |
Quote:
You too? Damn, I better not have to learn new words. They tried to do that to me in school and it really didn't go over to well. |
Quote:
I heart Fritz! |
Quote:
A poll to see how offensive people think I can be? Well, I can't say I'm all that surprised, except that it took this long. ;) |
Quote:
I think trusting in the benevolent two headed monster that we call moderators is good enough. Skydog and Ryan have done well at taking action when action is needed. No sense in fucking that up by forming a democracy. |
I guess then to sum it up, as George Carlin would most likely suggest-- "The 7 words youcan't say at FOFC"...or something like that...
|
Quote:
Notice, only in the title or QOTM. You can curse all you want in your post. I don't know why that would be a problem. |
Quote:
No fucking problem for me :D |
Quote:
I don't find it offensive, and I don't know the context of the quote in the thread - I guess I'm just harder to offend than most. Got to bring out that classic argument I heard around here so often in the last few months - First Amendment Rights to freedom of Speech  |
Quote:
well, a bit harsh (and salty), but I agree with the rules. |
Quote:
There is a QOTM in there for sure! |
Sounds like a good rule to me.
|
Quote:
Just so you know, no I am not a Dixie Chick, I didn't realize that the quote was from you. I also don't have any problem with the quote. I just don't like having the QOTM without the personal option to turn it off, which I would personally do. |
Quote:
So much for my nightly erotic FOFC fantasy. |
No worries, got no problem with it. Like I said, I could understand how someone could be offended by it, especially out of context and if they didn't know it was ment tounge-in-cheek.
And also as I said before, I got no problem with it being removed from QOTM. |
Quote:
If you have nightly erotic FOFC fantasies then you might just have a serious problem. |
Quote:
but I might not. Look, I know it sounds a little wierd, but how could you resist thoughts of Draft Dodger's toes? |
"Well, I don't find it offensive (but I know the context of the quote in the thread)."
I never said I found it personally offensive either. But I can see how someone could find it offensive. I'm sure if you were a muslim, you wouldn't like it too much. "Come on Sabbi, think about that for a sec...." I confess stupidity. Please explain it to me. |
I'm pretty sure if you hit refresh...the QOTM will change to something less offensive.......Unless you find Kleenex and girlfriends offensive :)
|
Quote:
The main thing offensive about that quote is that it is the main one I've ever seen. Retirement might be in order. |
Quote:
Well, there goes my sig and my one QOTM. |
Quote:
So you're now looking at other men's toes are you? Aren’t mine good enough for you anymore? |
Um, save the colossal squid!
|
You guys have got to admit that reading a quote like this one gave you a nice chuckle the first time you read it..
"Subby is Greek for Ham-Fisted Cunt" I mean Ham-Fisted Cunt? Who thinks up stuff like this? :D Now personally I think some of the stuff up there in the QOTM section is a bit harsh, but hey, we're all grown men (and women if there are any out there.) If someone is that offended by one of the quotes, well maybe they just shouldn't visit FOFCentral any longer and rescend their membership.. This is a damn Internet Message Board, one of millions and millions of them out there folks.. Hardly the kind of life and death stuff to get all torn up about.. Lets just relax a bit and enjoy the site.. |
"Um, save the colossal squid!"
HERE HERE! |
You ever wonder why one of these Squid doesn't attack a Submarine or something like in one of those old, low budget Films? Attack of the Killer Squid!!
|
Quote:
So your saying that if I am offended by a QOTM that I should just stop posting. Hmmmm. That is a real enlightened view. So, this board should only be made up of those who agree with a certain point of view, and if you don't you should get lost? I have a totally different view of what makes this board great, and if a QOTM makes this board look like it will not except a different point of view, then I think this board will lose what value it has. Let me put it this way...if you don't agree that this QOTM should be removed then you should leave. Do you like that? |
Grant, maybe I think maybe you read what I was trying to say wrong, or maybe I should've worded it differently (probably Option #2 in this case).
Yeah, we've got a few, slightly vulgar, tad bit obscene, individuals in here from time to time... Or shall I say we get a few Posts from time to time that may or may not cross the line a bit here at FOFCentral. So what.. We've got a lot of different folks from numerous different backgrounds. I just don't see the point in getting all ruffled up about someone just doing their best to come up with a solid "One-Liner". That's really all they are my friend, people just trying to get a laugh here and a chuckle there. One other point if I may.. No one has to read the QOTM... In fact, the QOTM is actually in a much smaller font and is nearly hidden in the whole layout of a individual FOFC page. Again, lets just enjoy the site, which I know both of us do on pretty much a daily basis.. |
Quote:
actually, he just said you should stop visiting. you would still be encouraged to post away, provided you figure out a way to do it without actually coming here. :D |
Quote:
I think you are missing the point. No one is saying for people not to post whatever they want. Feel free. But the QOTM post shouldn't celebrate what on the surface looks like this board supports genocide. No one any where is saying "don't post this" but the QOTM should be things that are funny or representative of the board, but I don't find religious bigotry funny. I know quote was not originally made to promote bigotry. The QOTM format does not allow itself to put comments into context. So, all that is being said here is a comment that is very offensive out of context should not be put on pedestal like it is one of the prominent views of this board. |
Let me say that I agree with you that the QOTM would be a better representation of FOFC in general if some of the more, shall I say offensive quotes were not a part of the rotation.
Let's leave it at that my friend. Personally I'm more interested in your thoughts on that bogus Offensive Pass Interference Call against the Golden Knights in their game against UGA in Athens a few seasons ago that basically cost UCF the game. That still haunts myself and a number of other UCF'ers to this day. Home-MotherF'in'-Cookin' to its absolute finest (or worst from my point of view). |
Quote:
Enough calls have gone against my Dawgs to say if that was wrong, then we are still owed many more. :p |
Since there's some conversation in this thread that indicates numbers and/or volume of opinion about the quote in question might influence its fate, I'll add mine to the mix.
I find that quote far better than at least 80% of the ones I've seen featured in QotM. Removing it on the grounds that it might/does offend someone or another opens a very real argument that you should then remove every quote that might/does offend anyone. Which I'd say pretty much eliminates the majority of the quotable moments at FOFC. I'd much rather just see QotM eliminated altogether than start trying to make it p.c., which IMO is exactly what this whole notion smacks of. |
Hmm...saying we should bomb a religious holy city is still better than what 80% of the other quotes say? I can say I strongly disagree with that. And I don't think that saying we should remove a quote that suggests we bomb a religious holy city is nitpicky PCism.
I hate PC as much as the next person, but I also think things should be consistent. Would that quote be there if instead of Mecca it was the Vatican or Jerusalem? DISCLAIMER: Yes, I know in context the author was not seriously suggesting we bomb Mecca. However, in QOTM, it's not in context. DISCLAIMER: Yes, I am suggesting we bomb the fuck out of the Vatican. Thank you. |
I missed the genocide part. How did we get there again?
|
Quote:
Would your aunt be your uncle is she had different plumbing? |
Quote:
This needs to happen. Soon. |
I never saw the quote in it's original context, but it's meaning was pretty clear to me.
|
Quote:
Reading this from SkyDog reminds me of those rare occassions when I've heard my mother drop such words as the F Bomb. The woman could have been a nun she's so straight laced. The time she told my brother's girlfriend to go "bag her ass," I almost ruptured a spleen I laughed so hard. |
"Would your aunt be your uncle is she had different plumbing?"
Please explain how this idiotic comment is in any way relevant to what I said... |
Quote:
This should sum it up Quote:
|
THanks Fritz, that mades so much more clear!
|
Quote:
I guess familiarity with a saying I've heard for years would have been helpful. The saying usually goes something like " ... and your Aunt Ethel would be your Uncle Fred if she were plumbed different" It's used like the saying "If 'ifs & buts' were candy & nuts, then we'd all have a merry little Christmas" and there's probably other variations other people know better. It basically points out that "if" isn't always what "is". So, with that in mind ... you said. Quote:
and then I said Quote:
In other words, I don't think it's likely the Vatican reference would have lasted but then again, it wouldn't have made much f'n sense either, since we weren't/aren't involved in combat where there's very many Catholics among the enemy. So your "if" doesn't really seem to have a helluva lot to do with the question at hand. Get it now? |
Southerners.
|
I'd just like to point out that, as a duly appointed representative of the Colossal Squid, I have no issue with any Colossal Squid-related QOTMs. In fact, I encourage them.
Thank you. |
Quote:
|
Dola--I'd always heard it said, "If my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle."
|
I don't want to get us off the discussion here, but I wanted to point out two things:
1) Cunt is a great word. Try dropping it in conversations at work. 2) Ironically, Ham-fisted cunt is Mandarin for WSU Cougar!!! |
