Super Bowl Era World Cup (Champion Crowned)

Using the current NFL league structure (fits perfectly into the 8 groups of 4) I am working on a Super Bowl Era World Cup Competition using WhatIfSports to run the games.

How is it going to work?

First I have seeded the top 8 teams for each of the franchises. Those teams will have a qualifying tournament to get to the "World Cup Finals".

Example: For the Eagles I have seeded the top 8 Eagles teams in the Super Bowl era and they will play a single elimination tournament to see which team will represent the Eagles in the World Cup.

The Original Seeding?

Super Bowl winning teams get priority and are seeded first in order of record. Second will be the Super Bowl runner ups. From there it will be the best single season records for each team (with a few judgement calls).

Once the Groups are set?

The "World Cup Finals" begins and I will use the same format as the World Cup with an opening round and then a round of 16.

Why?

Why not? Plus I was bored and insomnia last night forced me to do something to try to get tired.

Eagles Qualifying

The first team up for qualification into Group A... The Philadelphia Eagles

The Teams:

(1) 2004: 13-3 and the Super Bowl runner up
(2) 1980: 12-4 and the Super Bowl runner up
(3) 2003: 12-4 and one game from the Super Bowl
(4) 2002: 12-4 and one game from the Super Bowl
(5) 2009: 11-5
(6) 2001: 11-5
(7) 2000: 11-5
(8) 1992: 11-5

First Round

(8) 1992 vs. (1) 2004

TO has been talking and says he is ready to lead this team to victory. The 1992 team ie led by Randall Cunningham and hs is looking to take down each of Donovan's teams one game at a time.

After forcing a punt to open the game the 1992 team drives to field goal range but a missed field goal leaves the game scoreless. McNabb drives his team to the 16 on the ensuing drive and Akers gets them on the board with a field goal. After the 1st quarter the score is 2004-3 1992-0.

Cunningham leads the team to the 17 for a field goal to tie the game early in the second. Three plays later a Westbrook fumble sets the 1992 Eagles up at midfield. 4 plays later Hershell Walker takes a handoff and breaks free for a 25 yard touchdown to give 1992 a 10-3 lead. McNabb hits a few passed and leads 2004 the 26 but the drive stalls and Akers misses the fied goals to keep it 10-3. With under 2 minutes left 1992 tries a draw on a 3rd and long and Walker bulls through the defense for a 39 yard touchdown. At the half an upset is brewing as it is 17-3 in favor of the 8 seed.

1992 gets the ball to start the second half and they go on a 5 play drive that chew up almost 9 minutes and it ends in a field goal to make it 20-3. Three plays later on a 3rd down McNabb is picked off in his own territory. 1992 adds a field goal to make it 23-3 going into the final quarter.

Neither team can sustain a drive in the 4th and the scoring is capped when Clyde Simmons sacks McNabb in the end zone for a safety. 1992 has upset 2004 by a score of 25-3 and they advance.

Hershell Walker is named the player of the game as he carried the ball 23 times for 154 yards with 2 touchdowns.

(7) 2000 vs. (2) 1980

Jaworski versus McNabb as McNabb tries for an upset of his own (after seeing 2004 go down in flames).

This game isn't even close. Jaworski looks sharp and McNabb looks out of sorts. 1980 wins big 38-7. Jaworski goes 17 of 24 for 237 yards with 4 touchdowns. McNabb manages only 6 completions in 23 attempts and is picked off once. Jaworski is named the player of the game.

(6) 2001 vs. (3) 2003

McNabb versus McNabb, he is guaranteed a victory in this one. Similar teams going head to head. One of the biggest differences if Staley in 2001 versus Westbrook in 2003.

In the 1st quarter 2003 strikes first as McNabb hits Pinkston in the endzone for th first touchdown of teh game to make it 7-0 in favor of 2003. 2001 answers on the next drive as they go 72 yards and cap it with Staley powering his way in from the 2. The game is tied 77 after the 1st quarter.

2003 carries over a drive from the end of the 1st quarter into the second and caps it with a 17 yard run by Westcrook to make it 14-7. After forcing 2001 to punt the 2003 Eagles drive for a field goal to make it 17-7 and it looks like they are taking over this game. The 2001 Eagles manage a late fied goal to keep themselves in it as it is 2003 - 17 2001 - 10 at the half.

In the third, after holding 2003 to a three and out to start the half the 2001 team goes 73 yards in a long and mthodical drive. The drive ends with a 1 yard plunge over the the goal by Cecil Martin to tie the game 17-17 which is how the quarter ends.

A 40 yard field goal by the 2001 team gives them a 23-20 lead with just under 13 minutes left in the game. The 200 team counters with a field goal of their own to tie the game 23-23 with just over 7 minuts left. The 2001 Eagles go on a 79 yard drive that ends with Buckhalter scoring on a three yard sweep. Akers misses the extra point and the score is 29-23 in favor of the 2001 Eagles with a mintue and a half remaining. McNabb leads the 2003 Eagles down the field to the 2001 14 yard line. The final snap is taken with jus 5 second left. McNabb is back, no one is open, he moves in the pocket... He is hit by Douglas and goes down for the sack. 2001 wins 29-23.

Staley is the player of the game as he ran for 117 yards and a touchdown and had 3 receptions.

(5) 2009 vs. (4) 2002

Another McNabb versus McNabb battle. 2009 is much better stocked with receivers but 2002 has a better defense and a younger McNabb.

The game is an easy 22-3 victory for the younger McNabb as 2002 rolls to victory. The younger McNabb is given the player of the game though Staley could have just as easily won as he had over a hundred yards on the ground as they controlled the clock.

2nd round

(8) 1992 vs. (4) 2002

Another Cunningham versus cNabb matchup. This one starts out with 1992 taking the lead and not looking back. 2002 makes it closer late but that is only for show as 1992 wins 24-14. Hershell Walker runs through the 2002 defense and is named the player of the game as he runs for 126 yards and a touchdown.

(6) 2001 vs. (2) 1980

McNabb's last chance and it't a tough game against Jawosrki and the 1980 team.

1980 continues to look strong as they dominate and send McNabb packing 30-9. Montgomery is named player of the game as he has over 160 yards of offense and a touchdown reception. Jaworski was 16 of 22 for 272 yards with 2 touchdowns. McNabb was 17 of 25 but for only 174 yards with an interception.

Final Round

(8) 1992 vs. (2) 1980

Will it be Cunningham or Jaworski representing the Eagles? Jaworski has been sharp and Cunninghal has been solid. In th ebackfield Montgomery has looked good but Walker has dominated. It should be a good matchup.

The game turns ugly quickly as Hershell Walker shows the 1980 team that they cannot handle him. Defensively Reggie White and Clyde Simmons control the line as 1992 makes a statement with a 33-14 victory. Walker is player of thegame yet again as he runs for over 150 yards and 2 more touchdowns.

The first team into the Tournament will be the 1992 Eagles.

I always liked Cunningham and even more now that there's the UNLV connection. :D

Sad news to hear about his kid dying, though. :(

This is an awesome idea, it will be fun to watch. Just seeing the Eagles fight each other was good drama.

2nd round

(5) 2008 vs. (1) 1986

Elie gets a tough match against the Team 86 juggernaut. Will they be the first team to score on Team 86?

Team 86 starts with the ball at their 23. Carthon ahead for 1, 2nd and 9. Simms back to pass, looking, throws over the middle, intercepted by Corey Webster at the 40, he cuts to the sideline, makes a man miss and is gone, touchdown Team 08 and they go up 7-0 on a defensive score to open the game. After a few exhanges of punt Team 82 gets the ball on their 38 and drives the length of the field to tie the game on a 2 yard dive by Morris. The key play was a 48 yard ass from Simms to McConkey to get deep in Team 08 territory. The quarter ends tied 7-7.

The first drive of the 2nd quarter sees Team 08 score on a Manning to Ward 15 yard pass to take a 14-7 lead. Team 86 begins the next drive at their own 21 but it stalls on the Team 08 20 and they settle for a field goal to make it 14-10. After stopping Team 08 on a 4th down on the Team 86 38, Team 86 starts their next drive at the 39. Two plays later it's 3rd and 6 at their 43 with under 2 minutes left in the half. Simms fires deep and hits Bavaro in stride, he breaks a tackle and goes the distance, touchown. Team 86 takes a 17-14 lead. Team 08 starts on their own 17 with 1:40 left. Incomplete pass, 2nd and 10. Manning to Toomer for 11, 1st and 10 at the 30, timeout. Jacobs loses 3, 2nd and 13. Ward handed the ball on a draw that catches Team 86 by surprise, he breks several tackles and is gone, touchdown. The half ends with Team 08 up 21-17.

Team 08 opens the 3rd quarter drving to the Team 86 29 but the settle for a field goal to go up 24-17. Neither team can break through for the remainder of the 3rd and it's 24-17 after three.

Early in the 4th Team 08 scores on a 17 yard pass from Manning to Hixon as they take a 31-17 lead. Manning to Moss for a 20 yard score with 2:19 remaining makes it 38-17 and it is getting ugly. After a fumble on the very next play Jacobs goes 28 yards up the middle for the final score of teh game and Team 08 have thrashed the top seed 45-17.

Eli is the player of the game as he threw for over 200 yards and had 3 touchdown passes. Ward and Jacobs each broke 100 yards rushing.

(debated about doing a full write up for that one but I figured isnce the first half looked good...)

(3) 2007 vs. (2) 1990

Another Simms versus Manning matchup as Manning looks to guarantee himself a spot in the Finals.

Defense is the name of the game to start this one. Neither team scores in the 1st and Team 90 manages 3 field goals in the 2nd to take a 6-0 lead into the half.

Pepper Johnson sacks Manning for a safety on the opening play of the second half to give them an 8-0 lead. On the ensuing drive Team 90 adds to their lead with a field goal to make it 11-0. Team 07 answered by driving 78 yards on 10 plays to keep themselves in the game as Jacobs scored on a 1 yard plunge to make it 11-7. The third would end 11-7.

A 5 yard pass from Simms to Anderson would give Team 90 an 18-7 lead with just over 12 minuted remaining. After exchanging punts Team 07 would drive to the Team 90 21 and kick a field goal to make it 18-10 and bring them to within a score with 5:08 left. A three and out gives Team 07 the ball and they would drive to the Team 90 24 but lose the ball on downs with under 2 minutes left. One first down would win the game but Team 07 steps up and stops them to get the ball back with one last chance. They start from their own 41 with 1:15 left. False start makes it 1st and 15 at the 36. Ward for 5 and a 2 yard sack make it 3rd and 12, they use thier last timeout. Manning fires to Burress but misses, 4th down. Manning back, looks, has Burrsee open and fires but overthrows. They lose the ball on downs and the game will be over as Team 90 wins 18-10.

Brandon Jacobs was player of the game in a losing cause as he ran for 131 with a touchdown. Eli had a rough game, going 10 for 30 with 2 interceptions.

1st round

(8) 1974 vs. (1) 1991

Billy Kilmer and Larry Brown versus Mark Rypien and Ernest Byner. Will two number one seeds in a row get out of the first round or will the 8 seeds be 3-1 in the Group A qualifying?

Team 91 left now doubt. They surged to a 17-0 lead and coastd to a 27-10 victory.

Ricky Ervns is named player of the game as he scored a pair of touchdoews, one rushing and one receiving.

(7) 1976 vs. (2) 1982

Billy Kilmer gets anothe chance, this time against Theismann and a team that could have been the number on seed if not for the strike shortened season.

Team 82 took the opening kick and drove to the Team 7628 yard line before stalling and kicking a field goal to take a 3-0 lead. Neither team would score in the 1st and after one Team 82 leads 3-0.

Early in the 2nd quarter Team 76 gets a 28 yard field goal to tie he game 3-3. It would remained tied until Team 76 would get the ball at their 42 with 6:37 left and they would drive 58 yards in 7 plays, capped by a 7 yard touchdown pass from Kilmer to Jean Fugett to give Team 76 a 10-3 lead. They force team 82 to punt and get the ball at their own 31 with 1:36 left. 8 plays later it's 1st and goal on the Team 82 6. Handoff to Mike Thomas up the middle, he fights to get near the goalline and the ball comes out. Team 82 recovers at their 2. Team 82 is fortunate to go to the half down just 10-3.

Team 82 needs to make some changes at the half and they come out strong in the 3rd. They force Team 76 into a 3 and out to open the second half. Team 82 returns the punt all the way to the Team 76 26 yard line. They do stall at the 10 and have to settle for a field goal, Team 76 holds and sill leads 10-6. Team 76 with another 3 and out. Another good punt return gives Team 82 the ball on the Team 76 45 to start the drive. Incomplete pass, 2nd and 10. Theismann to Charlie Brown for 16, 1st and 10 at the 29. Theismann to Joe Washington for 9, 2nd and 1 at the 20. Washington runs for 1, 1st and 10 at the 19. Washington for 4 on a draw play, 2nd and 6 at the 15. With 4:59 left in the game Team 82 hits a 41 yard field goal to extend the lead to 23-10. Team 76 starts out on their own 32. Team 82 get the ball at their 22 with 4:08 left and the John Riggins show starts as he grinds out three first downs and they ru the clock out for the 23-17 win.

Joe Theismann is the player of the game.

(6) 1986 vs. (3) 1987

Jay Schroeder against himself as practially the same team faces itself. The 87 team has a Super Bowl trophy, in a strike shortened season (seems to be a pattern with the Redskins).

1987 takes the opening kickoff and drives 72 yards in 5 plays, capped by a 7 yard touchdown pass from Schroeder to Art Monk. The big play of the drive was a 54 yard pass from Schroeder to Anthony Allen. Team 87 has a 7-0 lead. Team 86 answers immediately with a 66 yard drve capped by a 6 yard touchdown run by George Rogers to tie the game 7-7. Team 87 then one ups them with a 67 yard touchdown drive capped by a 25 yard touchdown run by Kelvin Bryant as they regain the lead 14-7 and this looks like a shootout. The quarter ends 14-7.

Neither team can repeat that success in the second. Each team exchanges a field goal in the final 2 minutes of teh wuarter and the score is Team 87 17 Team 86 10 at the half.

Team 87 holds Team 86 to a three and out and then goed on a quick strike drive that ends in a 3 yard touchdown pass from Schroader to George Rogers to make it 24-10. Team 86 is not done as Schroeder hits Kelvin Bryant for a 30 yard touchdwn stike to make it 24-17 and they are back to within one score. Rather disappointed by that outcome. Was hoping that Marino's team would get the win but it was ugly.

At least the 72 team proved itself worthy of the perfect mark, even though I consider Bob Griese the most overrated QB in NFL history.

Oh well, hopefully 72 can do us proud!

Going to try to beat the heat with a swim and then I'll work on this later this evening. Should get at least 2 teams in, if I'm lucky I'll finish out the group.

Team 88 is unable to get close enough with just a few second left and Team 90 wins 24-17.

Andre Reed is the player of the game as he gained 100 on 6 receptions and had a touchdown.

(6) 1999 vs. (2) 1991

Doug Flutie versus Jim Kelly and crew. Will Flutie rain on Kelly's parade?

Norwood puts Team 91 on the board first, 3-0 in the 1st. Antowain Smith's 9 yard touchdown run with seconds left in the 1st gives Tam 99 a 7-3 lead after the first quarter.

Flutie hits Eric Moulds for a 23 yard touchdown to give Team 99 a 14-3 lead midway through the second. Late in the quarter Jonathan Linton scores on a 2 yard dive to give Team 99 a 21-3 lead at the half, a route could be brewing again for Team 99.

Each team trades a field goal early int he third to make it 24-6. Thurman Thomas rumbles for a 24 yard touchdown to make it 24-13 at the end of the third.

Team 91 picks up 2 field goals in the 4th, their second with just over 6 minutes left to bring them to within 24-19. Team 91 gets the ball back with 1:53 left on their own 33. Bills' Final

(6) 1999 vs. (1) 1990

Doug Flutie versus Jim Kelly round three. Will Flutie pull the upset?

Defense rules the first half and the game is scoreless after the first half.

Jim Kelly to Jamie Mueller for a 3 yard touchdown pass with under 2 minutes left in the third quarter is the first score of the game and gives Team 90 a 7-0 lead.

Halfway though the 4th Doug Flutie hits Eric Moulds in the endzone to tie the game 7-7 with 7:16 left. Neither team even threatens for the remainder of the 4th and regulation ends 7-7.

Team 90 receives the kickoff to start overtime, they start 1st and 10 at their own 32. Kelly takes the snap, drops back, looks, fires towards Beebe, picked off by Sam Rogers, he returns the ball to the Team 90 22, 1st down!!! Jonathan Linton for 1, and and 9 at the 21. Thurman Thomas up the middle, breaks a tackle and heads to the sideline, dives for the cone... touchdown!!! Doug Flute and the 1999 Bills will be the face of the franchise, the irony is the backup role version of Thurman Thomas is the player that puts the final dagger in Team 90's heart.

Bruce Smith of Teamn 90 is player of the game in the losing cause as he had 4 sacks and dominated. The 99 version of Smith had 2 sacks.

Flutie Flakes FTW.

Autumn 07-08-2010 03:07 PM

Yeah, seriously. That has to be the biggest upset here so far - that stretch of early '90s Bills teams was the biggest bloc we've seen so far in terms of the same team basically being represented multiple times. I may be rooting for Flutie in this World Cup!

Autumn 07-08-2010 03:07 PM

All he does is win!

Radii 07-08-2010 03:19 PM

great idea, can't wait to see the recent expansion teams (my panthers of course) with some lower seeds with 8-8 records.

EagleFan 07-08-2010 08:55 PM

Thanks for the good words. :)

Going to be running the Bears shortly. Looking forward to the Lions to see how Barry Sanders does.

To respond to another comment in the thread. I think the Bills have the second biggest block of teams but they are only beat by a team that had no choice but have a block of teams, the Texans.

Thought there may be a few questions about how some things are working.

I am actually running the qualifying in the same manner as a March Madness type of tournament. There the winner of 1-8 gets the winner of 4-5 and the winner of 2-7 gets the winner of 3-6.

The Titans and Oilers keep their history.

The Texans are only the Texans, hence they have the largest consecutive block.

The Browns are covered by both iterations of the Browns and the Ravens are just the Ravens.

1st round

(8) 1991 vs. (1) 1985

Jim Harbaugh versus Jim McMahon in what looks like an easy bet as the 85 Bears may be one of the biggest favorites in all of the qualifying rounds.

Team 85 sets the tone early and announces their presense to the rest of the Brears team. If you want to get to The Finals, you go through us. They hut down Team 91 with a 27-0 victory.

Richard Dent is named player of the game as he had 3 ot Team 85's 8 sacks and caused havoc all day.

(7) 2005 vs. (2) 2006

Kyle Orton verus Rex Grossman. Will it be good Rex or bad Rex?

On their first drive of the game Team 05 goes the distance in a drive capped by Adrian Peterson (not "that" one :)) with a 39 yard touchdown run to give them a 7-0 lead. The defenses would settle in and the quarter would end 7-0.

Midway through the 2nd Team 05 adds a field goal to increase their lead to 10-0. Neither team would get into scoring range in the quarter and the half ends woth Team 05 up 10-0.

Neither team gets across midfield in the third, it is looking like a really bad nightmare for anyone that likes offense. The game is 10-0 after the third.

After finally winning the battle of field position, Team 06 starts a drive on the Team 05 32 thanks to a decent punt return and focring them to punt from their own 9. Team 06 can only manage to gain 2 yards and kick a field goal to make it 10-3. They hold Team 05 to a three and out. The punt is retuned all the way to the Team 05 4 yard line, a close call shows the returner stepping out at the 4. Jones up the middlefor no gain, 2nd and goal. Jones for no gain, facemask calld, half the distance, 2nd and goal at the 2. Incomplete pass, 3rd and goal. Jones up the middle, near the lone, sretches, touchdown. Team 06 ties the game 10-10. After forcing a 3 and out Team 06 get the ball into field goal range and hit a field goal with 1:25 left to give them their first lead of the game 13-10. Team 05 starts at their own 26. After getting just 5 yards on the first 3 plays it's 4th and 5 at the 31. Screen to Benson, he breaks a tackle and is into the secondary for a gan of 43, 1st down at the Team 06 26. Jones on a sweep for 12, out of bounds, 1st down at the 14. Two plays later it's 1st and goal at the 3. They try Jones up the middle but he loses 1 yard, timeout with just 3 second left. Field goal is good to tie the game 13-13 and send it to overtime.

Teamj 06 starts overtime on their 27. Jones for 3, 2nd and 7 at the 30. Grossman fires, incomplete, 3rd and 7. Grossman back, looking, finds Muhammad for a first down across the 40 with a 13 yard pickup, 1st down at the 43. Benson off tackle for 1, 2nd and 9. McKie up the middls for 2, 3rd and 7. Grossman to Muhammad again for 13, 1st down at the Team 05 41. Jones for 4, 2nd and 6. jones off tackle for 2, 3rd and 4 at the 35. Grossman back, looking, fires, hits Desomond Clark for 17, 1st down at the 18. Benson for no gain, 2nd and 10. Jones forno gain, 3rd and 10. Do they risk another play? Yes they do. Grossman takes the snap, back, looking, fires an out pattern down near the 10 to Muhammad, the corner jumps it, but it goes through his ands and Muhammad has it and turns upfield, he has one man to beat, and does, touchdown. Team 06 wins 19-13 in overtime to move on.

Thomas Jones is playe of the game in a losing cause as he ran for over 200 yards for Team 05. Team 05 outgained Team 06 355-69 on the ground, they just couldn't get into scoring position. In the air was the trouble as Team 05 netted 39 yards passing.

(6) 1987 vs. (3) 1986

Jim McMaon versus Jim McMahon. Should be a good matchup, at least on paper.

Team 86 blows up that close game idea as they nearly repeat what Team 85 accomplished int he first round. They shut out Team 87, 26-0.

Walter Payton is player of the game for Team 86 as he ran for 122 yards with a touchdown. Maybe this team could give their 85 version a good run for their money.

(5) 1988 vs. (4) 2001

Jim McMahon versus Jim Miller. McMahon tries to have three of the final four teams.

The teams trade field goals in the first quarter. After the first it's 3-3.

Midway through the second a 12 yard touchdown run by Neal Anderson gives Team 88 a 10-3 lead. They would add a field goal late ni the half to extend their halftime lead to 13-3.

Neither team gets on the scorebord in teh 3rd quarter. After three quarters Team 88 leads 13-3.

Early in the 4th Team 88 adds another field goal to improve the lead to 16-3. Team 01 needs to do something soon. With 4:30 left, Miller hits Fred Baxter for a short 4 yard touchdown to narrow the gap to 16-10. Team 88 would run the clock down a bit but have to punt. Team 01 would be unable to advance the ball and their game would end with 4 incomplete passes and then be unable to stop the clock as Team 88 runs the clock out for the win.

Neil Anderson would be player of the game by default with the rushing touchdown but no one stood out. McMahon now has three of the four remaining teams.

EagleFan 07-08-2010 09:45 PM

2nd round

(5) 1988 vs. (1) 1985

Jim McMahon versus Jim McMahon. Which of his teams will advance?

Team 85 wastes little time answering that question. They dominate and have a 34-6 victory to show for it.

Walter Payton runs for 192 yards with 2 touchdowns in the victory. They hold Team 88 to 43 net pssing yards.

Note to other remaining teams, be afraid.

(3) 1986 vs. (2) 2006

Jim McMahon versus Rex Grossman. Sorry, but I don't see this being close as the 2006 team was one of teh most overrated and lucky teams in history.

While it's closer than I thought it was never in doubt. Team 86 goes on to a 23-6 victory in which Team 06 wasever able to really move the ball.

Walter Payton ran for 180 yards and 1 touchdown as he was player of the game. Bad Rex completed just 9 of 23 passes and was picked twice.

EagleFan 07-08-2010 09:58 PM

Bears' Final

(3) 1986 vs. (1) 1985

Jim McMahon will represent Da Bears, but which version of him? This is the final everyone would have expected and it holds form.

Early in the 1st Walter Payton breaks free on a 34 yard touchdown run to give Team 85 a 7-0 lead. The first quarter ends 7-0.

The teams exchange field goals in the second quarter. At the half Team 85 leads 10-3.

With just over a minute left in teh third, Team 86 gets the game to 10-6 with a field goal. The thirds ends with a 4 point game, 10-6 in favor of Team 85.

After exchanging punts Team 85 drives to the Team 86 25 but the drive stalls and they settle for a field goal to give them a 13-6 lead. After exchanging punts, Team 86 starts a drive at midfield with 2:16 remaining. Encroachment on the defense, 1st and 5 at the 45. Matt Suhey up the middle for 3, 2nd and 2 at the 42. McMahon hits Payton in the flat and he gains 14, 1st down at the 28, two minute warning. Payton gets the draw, and is caught for a 5 yard loss, 2nd and 15 at the 33. Payton loses a yard, 3rd and 16 at the 34. McMahon throws to the endzone, knocked down, 4th and 16. McMaho back, looking, has Willie Gault, but over throws him, turnover on downs. Team 85 runs the clock out for the 13-6 win and will represent the Bears.

Walter Payton is player of the game for the winners as he rushed for over 100 and had the touchdown.

1st round

(8) 2009 vs. (1) 1973

Brett Favre versus Fran Tarkenton. Do we fast forward to Favre's game losing interception, or will be save that one for later in the tournament?

Neither team can get on the board in the first quarter and it ends scoreless. The 09 team has driven into Team 73 territory as the quarter comes to a close.

On the first play of the second quarter Adrian Peterson goes 33 yards for he touchdown to give Team 09 a 7-0 lead. Team 73 hits a field goal on their next posession to getto within 7-3. Team 09 follow that with a drive into Team 73 territory that ends with a Percy Harvin 39 yard touchdown run to give Team 09 a 14-3 lead. Late in the 4th Team 73 scores on a 2 yard run from Chuck Foreman to close out the scoring for our final score of 24-13.

Adrian Peterson is the player of the game as he ran for 129 yards with a touchdown.

(7) 1970 vs. (2) 1969

Gary Cuozzo versus Joe Kapp. Pretty much the same team other than that.

Late in the 1st Team 69 scores ona 15 yard pass from Kapp to John Beasley to give them a 7-0 lead. The quarter ends 7-0.

Neither team scores in the 2nd and at the half Team 69 leads 7-0.

Team 70 hits a field goal midway through the 3rd to get to within 7-3. The quarter ends 7-3 but Team 69 has driven into Team 70 territory as the quarter comes to a close.

A 44 yard field goal early in the 4th for Team 69 to give them a 10-3 lead. Both defenses clamp down and the game ends with Team 69 wins 10-3.

There is no real standout and Joe Kapp is named player of the game thanks to his touchdown pass.

(6) 1975 vs. (3) 1976

Fran Tarkenton versus himself as we see a game of near identical twins facing off.

Team 76 scores midway through the 1st on a 22 yard pass from Tarkenton to Chuck Foreman to give them a 7-0 lead. The quarter ends with them up 7-0.

Team 75 adds two field goals in the second to get to within 7-6 and that is where the game stands at the half.

With just over 9:00 left in the 3rd Chuck Foreman scores for Team 75 on a 10 yard run to give them a 13-7 lead. Team 76 answers immediately with a drive that ends with a 5 yard touchdown run by Brent McClanahan to retake the lead 14-13. The 3rd quarter ends with Team 76 up 14-13.

Fran Tarkenton is player of the game as he threw for over 200 yards with a touchdown.

(5) 1998 vs. (4) 1974

Randall Cunningham versus Fran Tarkenton. Team 98 looks to prove they should be the top seed in ths tournament, but that technicality of no Super Bowl pushed them down to the 5 seed.

Midway through the first Cunningham hits Andrew Glover for a 1 yard touchdown to give Team 98 a 7-0 lead. Late in the first Team 74 answers with a 3 yard touchdown run by Chuck Foreman to tie the game 7-7 which is how the quarter ends.

Team 74 adds a late field goal in the second to take a 10-7 lead into the half.

Team 74 adds two field goals in the third. After the 3rd quarter Team 74 leads 16-7.

Tarkenton sacked by Stalin Colinet for 8 yards, 2nd and 18 at the 25. Foreman for 1 yard up the middle, 3rd and 17 at the 26. Tarkenton back, looking, hits Foreman in the flat, he sheds a tackle and turns upfield for 23 and a 1st down at their 49. Tarkenton to Stu Voigt for 7 yards to the Team 98 44, 2nd and 3. Tarkenton back, looking, he throws up top to John Gilliam who makes the catch and is down to the 4, a 40 yard strike, 1st and goal. Tarkenton back, looking, sees Foreman open in the endzone, fires, touchdown!!! They take a 22-17 lead and go for two. Foreman is stopped short and the conversion is no good. Cunningham drops back, gives to Leroy Hoard, he is up the middle, the defense is fooled as he cuts the outside, sheds a tackler, is across the 20, the 15, breaks one last tackle and is in, touchdown. Team 98 takes a 23-22 lead as they go for two. The conversion is stopped and the score remains 23-22. Team 74 starts at their own 34 with 1:19 and 3 timeouts left. Incomplete pass, 4th and 13 at the 22. Field goal attempt, it's good, there was a whistle, false start, no play, 4th and 18 at the 27. Field goal attempt, wide right, wait, there was another whistle, false start again, no play, 4th and 23 at the 32. An amazing third try for this potential game winner, now from 49 yards... wide left. Team 98 win a thriller 23-22.

Randall Cunningham is player of the game as he threw for over 200 yards and 2 touchdowns.

EagleFan 07-09-2010 10:31 PM

2nd round

(8) 2009 vs. (5) 1998

Brett Favre versus Randall Cunningham.

Team 98 used the opening game as a warmup and they came out firing against Favre's boys and they proved to be too much as they coast to a 37-18 victory.

Randall Cunningham is player of the game has be threw for 327 yards and 3 touchdowns. Favres managed to go just 16 of 30 wth 2 interceptions.

(3) 1976 vs. (2) 1969

Fran Tarkenton versus Joe Kapp. Will Tarkenton win a game versus someone other than himself?

Through the first three quarters Team 76 would scroe twice with field goals and that would be it as they would lead 6-0 after three.

Team 69 would drive to the Team 76 32 with under 9 minutes left but it would stall there. The field goal attempt would go wide left and they still trail 6-0. After forcing a 3 and out Team 69 starts at their own 27. Oscar Reed for 9, and and 1 at the 36. Encroachment, 1st down at the 41. Bill Brown for 2, 2nd and 8 at the 43. Vikings' Final

(5) 1998 vs. (3) 1976

Randall Cunningham versus Fran Tarkenton. Team 98 looks to prove they are the best team and underrated in the seeding and Cunningham looks to be the first quarterback with two teams in The Finals.

Early in the 1st a 12 yard touchdown run by Chuck Foreman gives Team 76 a 7-0 lead. Team 98 answers as Cunningham caps off a drive with a 5 yard touchdown pass to Robert Smith to tie the game 7-7. After a defensive stop Team 98 adds a field goal to take a 31-23 lead with about 11 minutes left in the game. Each team exchanges punts and Team 76 starts from their own 9 with 6:35 left in the game, they almost have to do something now. Brent McClanahan for 1, 2nd and 9 at the 10. Chuck Foreman loses 2 yards 3rd and 11 at the 8. Tarkenton back, looking, fires to McClanahan, complete for 19, 1st down at the 27. Foreman for 1, 2nd and 9 at the 28. Tarkenton back, beig chased, he runs for positive yardage as he picks up 4, 3rd and 5 at the 32. Rober Miller is stopped for o gain on a draw, 4th and 5 at their own 32 and they ar going for it. Tarkenton back, looking, no one is open, he rolls, spots McClanahan in the flat, flips him the pass and he is brought down close to the 1st down mark. They measure and he just got the first down, 1st down at the 37. Tarkentonto Bob Grim for 9, 2nd and 1 at the 46. Foreman up the middle for no gain, 3rd and 1 at the 46, two minute warning. 1st round

(8) 1972 vs. (1) 1966

Scott Hunter versus Bart Starr. Will the Super Bowl 1 champions prove that those who did it first did it best?

Jim Taylor gives Team 66 an early lead with a 2 yard touchdown midway through the first. That would be enough for them to win as they would coast to a 24-6 victory. Team 72 would be unable to reach the endzone and only settle for two field goals.

Bart Starr is the player of the game as he throws for over 200 yards with a touchdown.

(7) 2002 vs. (2) 1996

Brett Favre with two different supporting casts.

Ahman Green would give Team 02 a 7-0 lead early in the first. After a turnover Tony Fisher would score on an 18 yard run to give Team 02 a 14-0 lead. It would begin to look like a runaway and it would become one. Team 96 answers a Favre hits Levens for a 1 yard touchdown to make it 14-7 after the first quarter.

Two field goals and a 4 yard touchdown pass from Favre to William Henderson, all for Team 96 would give them a 20-14 lead at the half.

Teams exchange field goals in the third to make it 23-17 after three quarters of play.

A Dorsey Levens 9 yard run, with missed two point conversion and two more field goals, all for Team 96 would give them a 35-17 victory as Team 96 would outscore 35-3 the rest of the way after falling behind 14-0.

Brett Favre for Team 96 would be the player of the game for his two touchdown passes.

(6) 2001 vs. (3) 1967

Brett Favre versus Bart Starr, the two quarterbacks that are the faces of the franchise. Will Team 67 ensure that all three Super Bowl victors advance?

Team 01 shocks everyone by jumping out early and often on their way to a 40-7 dismantling of Team 67.

Ahman Green is the player of the game as he rushes for 132 yards with 2 touchdowns. Favre throws for 275 with 2 touchdowns as well.

(5) 2007 vs. (4) 1997

Another Favre versus Favre matchup.

Favres to Donald Driver for an 8 yard touchdown gives Team 07 a 7-0 lead. Late in the quarter team 97 answers with a 4 yard touchdown from Favre to Mark Chmura (he latched onto that pass like it was a 17 year old girl). The quarter ends tied 7-7.

Vernand Morency scores on a 7 yard touchdown run for Team 07 to give them a 14-7 lead early in the second. Team 97 answers on the next drive as Levens scores on a 2 yard run to tie the game 14-14. A 20 yard field goal gies Team 07 a 17-14 lead. Team 97 manages 2 field goals in the fial 2 minutes of the half to take a 20-17 lead at the half.

On the very last play of the third quarter DeShawn Wynn scores on an 11 yard run to give Team 07 a 24-20 lead at the end of three quarters.

On their first drive on the 4th quarter Team 97 drives a long and methodical 6 minute drive that ends with Favre hitting Freeman for a 24 yard touchdown to give Team 97 a 27-24 lead. Team 07 takes te next drive and goes the distance, capped with a 17 yard touchdown from Favre to James Jones to give them thelead again, 31-27. With 2:12 left in the game Favre goes up top to Robert Brooks for a 44 yard touchdown to give Team 97 a 34-31 lead, this is a seesaw battle. Team 07 starts from their own 35. Incomplete pass,2nd and 10. Favre to Franks for 5, 3rd and 5 at the 40, 2 minute warning. Incomplete pass, 4th and 5 as they may be down to their last chance. Favre dros back, looking, throws to Jennings, complete for 6 yards and a 1st down at the 46. Favre back, looking, under pressure, rolls to his right, he's hit, but scrambles away back to his left, he throw across his body back to the right towards Franks, Leroy Butler jumps in front for the interception and Franks tackles him at the 49. Team 97 runs out the clock for the 34-31 victory. (I have to admit, I laughed when I looked at the play by play to see how their last drive ended and saw the interception)

Dorsey Levens was player of teh game as he ran for 160 yards and had a touchdown. Freeman had over 100 yards receiving and a touchdown as well.

Team 97 comes out to start the second half with a 5 minute drive tat ends with a field goal to get to within 9-3. Late in the quarter Favre hits Derrick Mayes for a 13 yard touchdown to take a 10-9 lead. After three Team 97leads 10-9, that missed extra point could be huge.

With under 5 minutes to go Team 66 would drive to the Team 97 35 and have a 3rd and 8. Starr back, under pressure, screens it to Jim Taylor, he is hit and fumbles, Team 97 recovers to stop the drive. After holding them to a 3 and out Team 66 starts on their 28 with 2:33 left. Handoff to Jim Taylor, he cuts to the right, around the end, breaks a tackle, stiff arms another would be tackler and is into the secondary, he is finally stopped at the Team 97 34 after a gain of 38, 1st down, two minute warning. They hit the field goal to take a 12-10 lead with 33 seconds left. Team 97 is unable to get past their own 28 in their las few desperation attempts and Team 66 move on.

Carroll Dale is the player of the game with 93 yards receiving and a touchdown.

(6) 2001 vs. (2) 1996

Favre versus Favre. A victory for the 96 team guarantees that a Super Bowl champion will represent the Packers.

Team 96 takes apart Team 01 as they win 38-0. It was completely one sided and three turnovers by Team 01 just sealed their fate.

Keith Jackson is the player of the game with over 100 yards receiving and 2 early touchdowns to set the tone.

Packers' Final

(2) 1996 vs. (1) 1966

Favre versus Starr. 30 years seperate these teams but one game seperates them from representing their Packers at The Finals.

After neither team scores in the first quarter Team 96 opens the scoring midway through the 1st with a 38 yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead. With less than 2 minutes remaining Edgar Bennett would score on an 8 yard touchdown run to give Team 96 a 10-0 lead at the half.

Early in the 3rd Team 96 would add another field goal to extend their lead 13-0. The third quarter would end with Team 96 up 13-0.

On their first drive of the 4th Team 66 gets on the board with a field goal with just under 13 minutes remaining to make it 13-3. With 3:41 left Team 66 makes it a game as Bratkowski, in for a banged up Starr, hits Carroll Dale for a 40 yard touchdown to make it 13-10. They hold Team 96 to a 3 and out and get the ball back at their own 37 with 2:05 remaining. Starr, who is back in, hits Boyd Dowler for 14, 1st down at the Team 96 49, two minute warning. They are going to try a 57 yard field goal. The kick is up, it looks like it has the distance but it hits the left crossbar and is no good.
