Minecraft

For those of you that don't know what Minecraft is about, the best way I can describe it is a bit like Lego's crossed with Dwarf Fortress, except your the dwarf.

If you like world building games, this one is sure to suck you in.

Axxon 08-11-2010 12:16 PM

Great game, I agree.

Airhog 08-13-2010 10:13 AM

Ive been playing on WOM, which is World of Minecraft. Probably my favorite servers to play on, because you have to register to build, and they deal with griefers very harshly, so you can rest knowing that whatever you build isnt going to get trashed immediately, and you dont have to spend all of your time fixing the griefing.

World of Minecraft | Minecraft at its finest

Love this game!

Mining for ore, then coming across a large cavern... awesome. In my current game, I found a cavern that went as deep as possible. Along the way I find one monster spawner and treasure chests, several underground rivers and waterfalls, and a huge lava lake with waterfall.

I've built a monster/animal trap that automatically drowns everything that falls in. It's 13x15 and roughly 5 or 6 deep. Water pushes everything down to the center. The bottom is made of glass, and a small section deposits everything through a 1x1 block into a cavern under all of that. Perfect for auto harvesting.

Built a canon too. :)

I was pretty deep mining gravel in hopes of finding some ore behind in when all of the sudden lava started pouring out. Scared me, but I was able to get away safely. :)

Any beginner tips for this game other than keep mining until you find something fun?

PayPal Freezes $750K in MineCraft Dev's Account

Andy Chalk | 10 Sep 2010 2:37 pm

The creator of MineCraft has run into a bit of a snag with PayPal, which has frozen his account with over $763,000 in it and refuses to let him touch it.

Because it's a struggle for me to scrape together 750 bucks, much less 750 thousand, I can't really imagine how much it would suck to have it but not be able to get at it. So I'll let MineCraft creator Markus Persson describe the situation in his own words.

"Paypal. On the 25th, they limited my account for unspecified reasons (a suspicious withdrawal or deposit! wow, thank you for that amazingly detailed information), and asked me for a bunch of vague documents. I did my best to give them what they asked for," he wrote on his blog. "My account is still limited. I've called them three times, they keep telling me it's being reviewed. Most recently they told me it'd take up to two more weeks for it to get resolved, and that if they decide something bad's being going on, they're going to keep the money. There's over 600000 euro in there. Money I was planning on investing in the new company."

In response to people suggesting that it's somehow his own fault for letting all that money build up in a PayPal account, Persson noted that he actually clears out his account every week. "They limited my account just as sales started spiking, so this money has accumulated since they limited the account," he said.

One obvious question emerges from Persson's ongoing troubles with PayPal: How the hell does one guy rack up more than three quarters of a million dollars off a single indie game? My first thought was that it had to be a typo, but apparently MineCraft is just a really good game. As one commenter on Slashdot noted, "I bought the game a couple of months ago and every other game in my collection had been neglected... Single player is an amazing time waster, it's so easy to get completely sucked into a world made up of giant pixels. It's one of the best indie games I've ever tried and it's made by just one guy."

Persson said he's sure he'll get things sorted out, but described the situation as "kind of frustrating" in the meantime. Hopefully he'll have better luck than Something Awful did during its 2005 run-in with PayPal: After raising over $30,000 in nine hours to aid Red Cross efforts following Hurricane Katrina, SA's PayPal account was frozen for suspicious activity, ultimately resulting in all donated funds, minus service fees, being returned to donators.

mckerney 09-15-2010 01:21 PM

They've already unfrozen his money, but he is required to keep 5% of his total revenue in his account as long as he's using paypall.

Great to see he's bringing in that much money though.

Odd.

So, if he has say $50K in sales for the week, he would need to keep 2.5K in there and the next week, if he had $100, he would have to retain $7.5K?

I would imagine some bells would go off if your revenues suddenly spiked upwards to $750K in a short time.

Yeah, he's required to keep 5% of sale in the account to cover any possible refunds on charge backs required of PayPal. He did just hire someone to run the business side of things, so we'll see if he finds a different way to handle sales.

Though it looks like your example numbers are a bit low, he's done around $400,000 in sales in the last week.

To be fair, he's doing a little bit better than most indie game makers who just hired their company's third employee and have a game that's still in alpha.

mckerney 09-27-2010 11:43 PM

Good to see strong sales continuing, Minecraft has had nearly $1 million in sales since last Wednesday.

Thomkal 01-17-2011 01:10 PM

In the latest issue of PC Gamer Magazine, the one with Dragon Age 2 on the cover, there's a multipage article on how to get started in this game. I still haven't tried it because I'm not sure how much of a game there is in it and how much of it just a freeform builder.

PadresFan104 01-17-2011 01:16 PM

It's way more of a free-form builder, rather than a fleshed out game with strategic choices, goals, etc., but that doesn't make it any less addicting. It is tremendous fun exploring in this game. And some of the randomly generated landscapes are incredible...

Groundhog 05-17-2011 04:29 PM

OK, well I'm hooked. Not even sure why I finally decided to give this game a try 2 nights ago, but there I was last night, drilling a 20x20 quarry deep into the Earth's core...

Odd little game this one, but damn fun and addictive.

Yellow5 05-17-2011 05:06 PM

You should start checking out the popular seeds for maps once you get into the game a bit more.

Gargamel and Glacier are popular seeds.

PC Gamer also released a decent Top 10 list of mods the other day.

The 10 best Minecraft mods | PC Gamer

I'm using the map mod, several of Risugam's mods and a few others. Industrial craft adds a ton of new things to make. Far too many to list here but look at the thread on the minecraft forums for details.

Groundhog 05-17-2011 05:35 PM

Thanks for the tips! Some of the user created content for this game is amazing.

Terraria launch a huge success | PC Gamer

There's a new Minecraft-like game called Terraria that was released yesterday, the differences are that it's a side scroller, it has a simpler crafting system and there are NPCs that will move into the fort or castle you build. I've played about 8 hours so far and had a lot of fun with it. I haven't got to anything to crazy down deep yet, but I've been building a fort/mining colony into the side of a mountain while mining enough stone to build a fort.

It's the most played game on Steam right now and #2 seller.

Groundhog 05-17-2011 07:35 PM

First I've heard of Terraria. After a quick read of features, it sounds like mixing Terraria and Minecraft together would make the greatest game of all time.

Haven't been able to make anything cool in Minecraft, but here's what I've made in my fort in Terraria.

tyketime 06-03-2011 09:52 AM

My son who's been a big Minecraft fan bought Terraria and is loving it. So for $10, I went ahead and bought a copy too. I am completely cool with a "sandbox" concept, but this is really stretching it for me. Is is just expected that players will spend hours and hours poring over the hundreds of Youtube videos that go into much better detail about the game? There's no tutorial, and the "Guide Dude" seems pretty repetitive with his advice. At some point, I would like to have an idea where I'm going in the game. And I haven't figured it out yet. To those of you that are hooked on it, what did you do to get over that hump?

JPhillips 06-03-2011 10:13 AM

The Terraria Wiki helped me a ton.

RedHawk00 06-06-2011 02:37 PM

bought Terraria this weekend and having fun just building, very fun and open

spleen1015 06-07-2011 08:11 AM

I am planning on getting Terraria some time this week. I am hoping to have time for it tonight.

Groundhog 06-07-2011 06:15 PM

I bought Terraria a few weeks back and played for 20 mins or so and it didn't really grab me. Will have to give it another shot once I get bored of Minecraft, which may well happen if they don't do something to liven up this barren world I'm living in.

spleen1015 06-08-2011 06:06 AM

I bought Terraria last night and played for about 4-5 hours total.

My biggest problem is the controls. I can't remember the last time I played a keyboard controlled game. I'm used to WoW where I do all of my movement with the mouse.

I am having lots of fun with it. What is everyone doing with all of the Dirt Blocks they end up with? I find myself randomly digging and I am ended up with lots of dirt. Maybe I should fill in where I'm digging.

JPhillips 06-08-2011 06:39 AM

You can "sell" the 250 dirt blocks to the merchant for no money. That at least gets rid of them. I tend to keep one 250 block as an emergency way to build an escape route or seal a tunnel from nasties.

RedHawk00 06-09-2011 10:56 AM

since there is no limit to the amount of chests you can make, I have like 7 now, each for different stuff to store that kind of stuff

i built myself a castle with several rooms. check out some of the wiki's and videos, people are really creative...

spleen1015 06-09-2011 10:59 AM

I have about 10-12 hours into this game and I am loving it.

I am having a problem finding iron though.

Do you guys know if I can create a second house and put a bed in it and make that bed my respawn point? I am tired of having to find my way all the way back to caves, etc.

JPhillips 06-09-2011 12:27 PM

Yes, the bed will be your spawn point. I don't know what happens with multiple beds.

I moved my character to a small world and I'm having a much easier time finding resources. I think the large world, in particular, is best suited to multiplayer.

spleen1015 06-10-2011 09:21 AM

Terraria really gets its legs once you get off the ground and start getting the good equipment and accessories.

The 1.0.4 update is supposed to be out today.

I really started having a lot of fun after I found an enchanted boomerang and built a grappling hook. The grappling hook is really necessary when exploring larger caves deep down.

I'd started on a large world but think I'm going to move to a small or medium. On a large world the dungeon and underground forest are about 2400 feet below where I originally spawned. I'm looking forward to exploring them on a world where they're more accessible.

Oh, and the mining helmet. The mining helmet is definitely a necessity.

spleen1015 06-10-2011 09:33 AM

I got the boomerang from my very first chest. It made dealing with mobs much easier.

Have you found the floating islands yet? There are 2 very useful accessories to be found there.

I was watching a Total Biscuit and Jesse Cox Play Terraria video and saw them craft a bunch of walls at once. Went to figure out how to do it, tried right clicking and was angry at myself for not finding out about it sooner.

FrogMan 07-27-2011 11:36 AM

is this the place where people talk about Terraria too? Search only return this spot.

Anyway, got it during the Steam sale, for $5 and not the really cheap price of $2.50 but still, having tons of fun with it. Really addictive.

have yet to find any of the things like boomerang or miner helmet but did craft myself copper helmet, armor and pants. Digging and digging. :)

Yah, I haven't kept up with all the rumoured features in 1.8, but anything that helps make the Minecraft world feel more "alive" would be most welcome.

RendeR 09-01-2011 02:48 PM

Heybrad: You need to get whitelisted for the server, go to the URL of teh server and read the forums, there is a quick application which Darq (admin) usually handles within minutes to get you logged in.

Once there just keep an eye out for me. I'll show you round!

As for 1.8:

Big changes: New ore(s) at least one, possibly 2 new ores and appropriate uses for such ores

Height of the world to expand to at least 512 blocks high (possibly more and it could be adjustable by whomever is running the world)

2 new monsters though both damage blocks and in some multiplayer servers they will be disabled from doing so.

1 new spider, with poison!

a totally new environment, brown grass and giant mushrooms!

new surface features: Ruins and villages with AI villagers in them

New underground features: abandoned mines and fortifications

There is more after that. This is supposed to be the largest update since they put the game out there for beta play. Its also supposed to be the last BERTA update. The next rollout should be the full game version for everyone to use.

Fun shit!

Peregrine 09-21-2011 05:51 AM

Well I've started out in this crazy world - been on the fence for a while, but I have to say it's pretty cool. Not a big fan of all the monsters but so far I am having fun just running (or flying around) in creative mode and trying this and that.

How does the game even work multiplayer? Is it a bunch of people all running around in the same world at the same time like an MMO? Seems like that would be a recipe for griefing.

RendeR 09-21-2011 12:03 PM

Greifing happens, but most servers have things in place to eliminate that. The one I use (Acmecraftco.com) uses a number of different thing. One is a history tracker for blocks so they can see who made what changes and punish them for that if necessary. Another is white listing, and still another is having kits and benefits that are premium items that make the game MUCH easier to navigate for a small donation to support the server.

I tend to travel until I find an isolated area and then begin building my projects. We're going to do a full world reset for 1.9, I'll be sad to see all my creations go, but the admin is going to make the world available for download. So I won't lose them completely.

I've been exploring a massive abandoned mine shaft complex in my most recent world. Fun stuff.

PackerFanatic 09-21-2011 12:09 PM

I never thought it would be fun, but my buddy started up a server and we have a ton of fun on it. I don't know if he plans to open it up publicly, but we have 3 people on there right now (the third guy doesn't do a whole lot at this point). I just recently completed building a massive pirate ship and it is fantastic.

RendeR 09-21-2011 07:39 PM

Whats the address? I can always use another server to visit =)

PackerFanatic 09-21-2011 07:41 PM

I will talk to him about getting the address out there - he has a whitelist on it currently, so he has to allow people in - but really, we need more people. It can get boring and lonely with just us :)

Although he hasn't updated the server yet (he is using Bukkit) so your client would have to still be on 1.7.3

RendeR 09-22-2011 07:43 AM

Ahh I'm using 1.8 at the moment. They're still working on all the add-ons for bukkit, which is why the main server I use is still sitting on 1.7 as well.

Let me know if/when he updates!

PackerFanatic 09-22-2011 07:51 AM

I talked to him tonight and he has a few things he wants to do on the server before opening it up (namely getting some of his personal files off and putting up a hardware firewall). He was definitely open to the idea of opening it up to at least some people though, so that should be awesome :)

Bonegavel 10-05-2011 08:44 PM

Having fun with this for the past few days. Amazing how much you can get out of so little. Hard to believe but I've had one of my favorite gaming moments of all time in this game.

I was deep into the side of a mountain searching for coal and iron when I broke through to a chamber that had the edges barely lit by my torch. Ahead of me was the inky blackness of a chasm. I slowly carved a downward ramp and after a few dozen blocks depth a faint glow appeared in the distance and I could see that it opened into an enormous underground expanse.

Zombies and spiders crept up out of the blackness the entire time and I was far from my spawn point so I had to proceed with utmost caution especially since I didn't know how far down the hole continued (I had a bunch of decent inventory on me at the time and didn't want to lose it). The lighting in the game is down very well.

The faint glow grew and grew until I came to a ledge and peered down into a huge lake of lava. It lit up the biggest cave I've seen in the game (I don't think I could carve it out given several lifetimes). Water mixed with the lava in many places spilling from the roof what seemed a mile above me. I know there is obsidian where the lava and water meet and I am now determined to find some diamond and get me some.

The feeling of exploring was exhilarating and I couldn't believe how immersed I was especially with the blocky java-graphics that feel like something out of 1985. This guy has created something special here and I hope he continues to develop this game far into the future.

PadresFan104 10-05-2011 09:37 PM

Bonegavel - Interesting timing, had a very similar experience with 1.8.1 last night. :)

I was spending a couple of relaxing hours exploring a HUGE underground network of caves when I came across another subterreanen crevice... I wasn't careful enough and fell though, though I didn't immediately die since I was full on armor and food. The problem is that I only had 12 torches left... After placing my first torch I saw a wood block. Huh? Turns out I had fallen into an abandoned mine, complete with tracks and everything. (New feature in 1.8) Long story short, 12 torches and 20 spiders later I was toast and waking back up at my spawn point. Can't wait to go back... ;)

RendeR 10-05-2011 11:41 PM

I love this game =)

Peregrine 10-06-2011 12:24 AM

I've been having a lot of fun playing in creative mode lately - I've been working on a whole civilization, very slowly - creating some of their customs, as well as a lot of hidden tombs (similar to Egypt.) Really fun game.

RendeR 10-06-2011 08:49 AM

I think what I like most is that its not "all or nothing" You can take from it whatever works for you without having to do assloads of worthless crap just to get to what you want.

You can come and go as you please without it going shitty on you as well.

just a simple, straightforward game with tonnes of possibilities.

Minecraft 1.0 is out Now!

RendeR 11-20-2011 10:33 AM

Ok gotta say I am in LOVE with the single player hardcore setting on this. You get 1 life, when you die, its over and the game deletes itself!

no going back, serious heart attack action.

I'm on my 3rd attempt to get things moving. had a GREAT first game setup and a damned Enderman came out of nowhere and kicked my ass. Oh yeah, the game is auto set at the hardest possible settings too.

SO much new stuff, SO much fun!

Bonegavel 11-29-2011 09:45 AM

I can't get enough of this game. I setup a server at my house where me and my nephew are playing together and I'm on the mc.darkcraft.org server as well. I've really got the basics down to a science and in no time I'm mining diamonds at a decent clip. Layer 12 baby.

Server problems. He's hoping to have the website back up possibly later tonight. Looks like the game server may be a bit longer than that though:

Incompatible Browser | Facebook

I had just started building a place on the server Sunday night.

chinaski 11-30-2011 07:14 PM

I've been trying to find a good beginners guide to get me going, but not having any luck. I tried playing the game, but I honestly have no idea what im doing and can't figure out where the fun is in it? Any pointers?

I'm about 20 videos into that series. The game looks pretty interesting, but I am wondering if it would hold my interest being a sandbox/creativity game. I'm trying to talk myself into spending the money and giving it a try.

Definitely worth it, Brian - especially if you do survival mode. Building stuff for fun only lasts for so long...its much more fun trying to do that and not die at the same time :)

Yeah...highly addictive. My kids and I are hooked.

Is there any hope of being able to play this on a laptop without a dedicated graphics card. I tested it with the free 0.30 version and it was pretty horrible. Any reason to suspect the current version would be any better?

PackerFanatic 11-30-2011 10:06 PM

It's surprisingly intensive...I know my buddy had issues playing it on his desktop, but then again his beast was pretty old. Can't really speak to what changes they might have made since then to make it a bit easier, but you can try turning some of the settings down to see if that helps.

RendeR 11-30-2011 10:33 PM

Anyone know how to see what our CURRENT score is in a hardcore game?

I've got a small medieval castle/village thing working in my current game and I wondered how many points I'd built up, but I can't seem to find it.

I'm on DarkCraft.Org as well. You can find my posts in the forums when everything gets back online. I'm doing a terra-forming project in the northwest corner -8k -8k. Join up!

MC runs like shit on every laptop I've tried it on even with video settings turned down.

Holy christ I feel utterly insignificant. Thanks a lot man. Fuck....

RendeR 12-22-2011 07:37 AM

Ok, just to remind anyone interested:

Darkcraft.Org : forums, rules and signup information, fill out an application there and get whitelisted within a very short time.

mc.darkcraft.org is the server site to which you can log on even before whitelisting is done, you just can't do much until they get your app done.

TONS of space, its a huge world 8K in every direction (16kx16k world)

Lots of cheap upgrades you can buy such as kits which give you free stuff every 2-3 days, teleporting ability via setting multiple "home" points so travel is fast and simple.

I'm creating my own town/city called Romulus, its located at the farthest north west point in the world. You have to cross avast ocean to reach it and in fact I'm creating the islands on which the buildings stand myself, raising them from the depths. I'd certainly welcome any FOFC members to join in. I have all the premier kits and abilities so we will never really want for matierials!

Join up!

Holy hell - that timelapse is sweet. I wish we had that many people on a server to do something like that :)

My buddy and I are finally putting the finishing touches on the permissions and such on our server...hopefully we will be able to open it up to some new folks soon. It's not that fun with just 2 :)

RendeR 12-22-2011 12:18 PM

Yeah let me know, More than happy to build something shiney on another server!

spleen1015 12-22-2011 12:31 PM

How do you coordinate all of those people to make something like that happen?

I've wondered that myself. I can only guess that the planning is all done outside of the game itself, using the map export tools.

Vince, Pt. II 12-22-2011 08:15 PM

So, I've lately been addicted as hell to Terraria (thank you, $2 sale on Steam). I've heard friends say that it's basically 2D Minecraft, and I've yet to give Minecraft a go even though I've been meaning to.

My question: is there any sort of definitive progression to Minecraft? Or is it just a sandbox? The reason I enjoy Terraria so much is there is clear delineation in progress based upon gear/bosses/etc to balance the open nature of the game. I think if Minecraft doesn't have that sort of progression, I won't be as interested in it.

NPCs, boss battles and locations like dungeons and sky islands are the reason I've enjoyed Terraria more than MineCraft (while there are other things I like more like a better crafting system). It's been a while since I played MC though, so I wouldn't be able to tell you what features like those were added.

RendeR 12-22-2011 10:48 PM

There are mobs to kill for experience, experience can be spent to enchant tools, armour and other items. Thats all there is to any real "progression" Minecraft is not an RPG, but it contains RPG elements.

Crafting goes from teh most basic (sand into sandstone, dyes into colored wol etc etc) to the most complex (enchanting table, potion brewing, and creating a portal into "The End" where the Minecraft Dragon lives)

It is far more Sandbox than developing game. Its more about creating and building than hack and slash.

I've never played terreria, but from past experience with video game RPGs I've found I enjoy the low stress way Minecraft handles things far better than how the 2d games use to do it.

pbot 12-22-2011 10:54 PM

Wow, that video is impressive.

I'll second the Darkcraft server recommendation. I've just been building a little homestead by myself, but it is interesting to wander around periodically and see what others have built or are building.

PackerFanatic 01-05-2012 03:43 PM

Hey guys - my buddy and I are finally ready to open things up a bit more and let more people on the server! Please do one of two things if you'd like access:

1. PM me with your Minecraft username - we whitelist by user and of course we only want people we can trust (which is how it goes on most of these servers :) ). I know I can trust pretty much everyone here, so I probably won't turn anyway away from here. At this point, we have a server capacity of 20 (it's a small server) and only 3 people that play full-time, so we would love to jump that up.

2. Please go to Dutchiesland Gaming Community • Index page and sign-up for our forums :) There you will find not only info about the Minecraft server (with some special commands for users coming very soon!) but other gaming forums in general. Feel free to post as much or as little as you want, either in MC forum or other forums - that is just going to be the best way we have to communicate things about the MC server in general - issues, new plugins, downtime, etc.

Any questions, comments, suggestions, you know where to find me :)

Shkspr 01-06-2012 12:57 AM

My nephew turns 8 this weekend, and has obsessed over Minecraft for at least a year. My wife and I got him his own Minecraft pickaxe from ThinkGeek for Christmas, and she made the cake below for his birthday this weekend.

Minecraft Cake

Hopefully this goes better than his sister's Angry Birds disaster last November.

RendeR 01-06-2012 09:34 AM

Hey Packer, signed up on the forums but I'm not seeing anything about minecraft? Not seeing much of anything at all actually?

Am I going to the proper link?

PackerFanatic 01-06-2012 09:36 AM

Shkspr - that is pretty fantastic!

Render - I will have to check the permissions, I am betting something simple is missing. I got your PM and will try and get your added tonight before I head out for bowling, otherwise it will be later :)

RendeR 01-06-2012 09:43 AM

No worries!

PackerFanatic 01-06-2012 03:14 PM

Render, your permissions should be fixed on the forums now. I will get you added to the server whitelist and send you the info for it tonight.

Bonegavel 02-02-2012 12:34 PM

Anyone have any recommendations for a MC hosting service? There are a bunch out there and I'd rather pick the right one in the beginning rather than having to migrate my stuff all over the place.

I've looked at VeryGames and redstone hosts and I can't make heads or tails as far as good deals/hosts go.

spleen1015 05-11-2012 08:33 AM

Is anyone picking this up for the 360?

I'm wondering how it works. With the PC version, you have the ability to host your own server, right? How does this mechanism work on the 360? Does it even exist on the 360?
