Official College Football thread - Week 7

Another weekend of games is quickly approaching! Only a few matchups of Top 25 teams this week:

Oklahoma State at Texas
Arizona State at Oregon
and one of the big rivalry games: Michigan at Michigan State

MJ4H 10-12-2011 09:22 AM

Arkansas plays BYE this week. Have to be careful, I hear they gave Florida State a pretty rough time last week.

Ksyrup 10-12-2011 09:30 AM

UK plays BYE as well, and is guaranteed not to lose.

Although they just lost their freshman RB for the season. As if it could get any worse...

MacroGuru 10-12-2011 10:36 AM

BYU heads to Oregon State this week...I can watch it on a 6 hour tape delay...or find a bar that has the sports packages and beg them to play the regional broadcast.

The fact BYU had to negotiate with the PAC 10 and Fox to get this game on TV and then get it tape delayed pisses me off..

"Hi, we have this state of the art HD truck and tv production facility, we are willing to foot the bill on this and drive up to Corvallis and show the game nationally, you guys ok with that?"

"No"

"Are you sure...we have money."

"Maybe"

"Maybe? Well, what happens if you can show it on your on fox channel, could we, pretty please?"

"Sure, but you have to tape delay for 6 hours to show it on your own station....."

Kodos 10-12-2011 11:33 AM

Hopefully Indiana can keep the score in the upcoming Wisconsin game closer than 83-20.

Ksyrup 10-12-2011 12:51 PM

I laughed so loud at this that someone came to see WTF was going on in my office. So, here:

dawgfan 10-12-2011 02:03 PM

Washington gets a really banged-up Colorado at home this Saturday. Good test to see where this program is - do they take care of business and easily dispatch the Buffs, or do they get cocky and overlook them while thinking about the following week's game at Stanford?

I think the amount of talking between fan bases after the game might be more interesting than the game. I think their combined record is being a wee bit kind in saying how good both of them are though. Offensively, MSU isn't as good this year, but their D is decent. I'm still not sure how good, or not Michigan is. Robinson has to prove he can throw against a defense that's tougher than a stiff wind. MSU hasn't run well against physical defenses, but Michigan isn't exactly physical just yet.

Georgia Tech has only won in Charlottesville once since its national title season in 1990. Of course, it was the last time they played there in 2009, but still not a very good track record on visiting God's country.

General Mike 10-12-2011 05:08 PM

Hopefully Rutgers can stay focused.

Matthean 10-12-2011 09:02 PM

Text From Last Night is coming to E. Lansing for the game. I wonder the over/under on tales of debauchery that come out of it.

tarcone 10-12-2011 10:19 PM

Great. We get Northwestern. They love to play Iowa. Its a home game for the Hawks, but I dont know if that will help.

Ksyrup 10-13-2011 03:26 PM

Pat Forde leaving ESPN for Yahoo. I wonder what part the Bruce Feldman thing played in this, and whether others might take the opportunity to look around.

Eaglesfan27 10-13-2011 04:41 PM

I'm very excited to see what Farmer does at RB tonight.

Sorry, Farmer is never a running back in a billion years. He just doesn't have the frame for it. Another desperation move and a burned redshirt from Kiffin, and Baxter is almost certain to transfer now (not that I'm nearly as concerned about that as I would have been a year ago, he looks like crap).

That being said, great game. This team finally looks like it has a backbone and found a couple linebackers who can make some plays. Very encouraging.

Eaglesfan27 10-13-2011 11:27 PM

I don't know about that. He was a good RB in pop warner, and he looked good on a few of his runs. He ran tough on the one near the side line and one inside. The fumble is concerning, but he has too much potential to not get back into the game - particularly with Tyler's injury looking like it will keep him out for a while. That being said, Moody had a nice game. Agreed about the linebackers and defense showing some backbone. Overall, it was a good game to watch, although I was disappointed in the offense's failure to capitalize more.

bhlloy 10-13-2011 11:41 PM

If you can name a RB who has had any success with his kind of lanky frame, I'd like to hear it. Closest I can think of at the college level is CJ Gable, but Gable was a little shorter and was much bigger in the lower body.

I just don't see him having near the impact at RB that he would at WR. As a change of pace guy and a receiver out of the backfield - maybe. But I can't see an everydown back, and I see an instant contributor at WR. It's a shortsighted move

knolysis 10-14-2011 04:29 PM

Here's to hoping the Seminoles can pull the car out of the ditch this week against the Blue Devils.

This Hawaii-Sna Jose State game may be the ugliest thing ever.

tarcone 10-14-2011 11:27 PM

I read that 20 recruits are visiting Iowa City this weekend. Its under the lights, lots of color (odd sections are black and even are yellow and the fans get cards to make and american flag theme during the national anthem and to celebrate America Needs Farmers), and playing a rival thats owned us. If we win it will be a big boost. If we lose, its a big hurt. Some good recruits are showing up. Come on Hawks.

Thomkal 10-15-2011 06:09 AM

Big game in the Big South this week. Coastal Carolina travels to Liberty in a battle of conference leaders. Coastal is somehow #20 in the rankings after beating just one good team (Furman) and three weak teams (Catawba, North Carolina A&T, VMI) so this game will show if they really deserve the ranking or not. Coastal beat Liberty last season, so I'm hoping for a repeat performance. ;)

MSU and Michigan are wearing some of the shittiest jerseys I can recall seeing.

It's awful lol.

Matthean 10-15-2011 11:17 AM

Michigan actually switched after seeing MSU.

Matthean 10-15-2011 11:22 AM

Michigan 7-0 after a key fake field goal that was painfully obvious from the start and more so once the guy went into motion.

mauchow 10-15-2011 11:23 AM

Montee Ball may score 5 touchdowns today.. maybe just three.

We can think Nike and Oregon for that.

Michigan tied at 7. MSU made it look painfully easy as we start to see Michigan's D look more like it actually is.

You gotta think the game will be nearly identical to that of ND and Michigan a few weeks ago.

bronconick 10-15-2011 11:36 AM

Indiana just punted into their own lineman for a one yard punt.

They should probably go NCAA '12 and replace them with the MAC Champions for a year.

Matthean 10-15-2011 11:47 AM

Not sure how much the dropped passes are a part of it, but the high winds I think favors Michigan since they aren't winning through the air anyway.

mauchow 10-15-2011 12:11 PM

Montee Balls third TD on the day - one of them throwing TD to Russell Wilson.

Matthean 10-15-2011 12:34 PM

Michigan can't throw and haven't been taking advantage of field position. MSU can't seem to get past themselves.

At least Michigan is somewhat recognizable as Michigan. MSU OTOH...wtf.

DeToxRox 10-15-2011 01:06 PM

Michigan is incredibly improved. Too bad that improvement took them from awful to below average.

larrymcg421 10-15-2011 01:12 PM

Hi Jacory Harris. It's been so long since I've seen you!

Matthean 10-15-2011 01:20 PM

Robinson will be the most hyped Michigan player that the fan base will be joyous when he leaves.

Matthean 10-15-2011 01:27 PM

Instead of pulling of a NW type 2nd half, Michigan looks to have regressed and they were exactly doing much before the half. This is just bad football.

52-7 3rd quarter.. so, in the last 7 quarters Wisconsin has put up 135 vs Indiana.

DeToxRox 10-15-2011 01:41 PM

How was Gholston not ejected yet? Kid's apparently got the same roid rage Vernon had.

Matthean 10-15-2011 01:52 PM

Stay classy MSU.

I like how Gardner came in and the offense moved a little and then Robinson came in and the offense stalled. I think Garner is only going to get more reps as the year passes on.

MrBug708 10-15-2011 01:56 PM

Michigan State's uni's look nice, Michigan's, not so much. But 17 year old kids will love them and that's all that really matters

Matthean 10-15-2011 02:00 PM

And as usual Robinson does just enough to where the game is 21-14 in the 4th. State fans have to be a little concerned that Michigan is playing this bad and is hanging around.

Matthean 10-15-2011 02:02 PM

And there's the fumble. Michigan's ball.

I think both look like shit but that's me. UM didn't even announce their jerseys, they just changed into them after warm ups.

Holy derp, Sparty.

DeToxRox 10-15-2011 02:06 PM

Between the Lions/Bears on MNF and this game today, the football fans of Michigan have seen some abysmal games this week.

DeToxRox 10-15-2011 02:07 PM

Worst 4th down play call ever? I think so.

bronconick 10-15-2011 02:07 PM

That was the least manball call I've ever seen.

Matthean 10-15-2011 02:12 PM

I did a post on FB before the game saying neither were top 10 teams. Congrats U of M/MSU for confirming my point.

Matthean 10-15-2011 02:14 PM

And there's the mandatory INT by Robinson.

Liberty's 2 FCS losses are both 27-24 to JMU (TSN #13) and Lehigh (TSN #8). Should be a very good game and ESPN3 is showing it. The key, as is the case in nearly every LU game, is whether or not Mike Brown turns the ball over. If he doesn't, Liberty should take this by about a touchdown, if he does then Coastal could run it up as high as a 10 point win. Considering the way Brown has played in his last 4-5 big games, I expect the latter.

There was a report in today's local paper that Liberty's star receiver was hurt in practice this week and may not play. That would be a big boost for Coastal as he put up big numbers in the game last year. Liberty also plays very well at home and put up 50+ points when Coastal last played there. Coastal best offensive player perhaps TE David Duran won't be playing, either will a pretty good backup. I think its going to be very tough for Coastal to win, but we shall see shortly as the game is at 3:30. Keep me updated :)

DeToxRox 10-15-2011 02:17 PM

Considering neither one were in the top ten before the game, I think the entire world probably agreed with you before the game even started. The only reason Michigan was #11 is because they hadn't lost and the rules say teams who haven't lost need to be ranked high. Of all the unbeaten teams left in college football, only three had less respect than Michigan. (Georgia Tech, Illinois, Houston)

This has been an ugly game all the way around from both sides. I think the officiating has been a joke. #2 on Michigan State should have been ejected from the game twice. (I'm sorry, jerking a guys head around when the play is over is every bit as bad as a punch)

As far as how the teams have looked, though, I don't really think you can underestimate the weather. Not many teams are going to look good with a constant 25 MPH breeze with gusts up to 45 or 50 at times. Even the team with the wind has had issues. I still don't think either team is a top ten team, but with normal weather conditions I think this is a far more entertaining game.

TroyF 10-15-2011 02:24 PM

Quick side note here: I've always liked the Michigan State head coach. I will lose a MASSIVE amount of respect for him if he reviews the film and doesn't suspend #2 for next weeks game.

I know, I've heard the stories, but to see a guy act this classless on the field and not do anything would be a disgrace. If he doesn't, I hope the Big 10 takes action. I read today Hoke crushed him in in-state recruiting this year. I'm a parent and watch how the two teams act on the field, I think I'd be happier sending my kid to play for Hoke. Just my opinion of course.

In other news, Lattimore is in a full leg brace and on crutches going off the field. It would be sad to see a talent like that have his year ruined.

Atocep 10-15-2011 03:02 PM

What the hell Rutgers?

I expected Pitt to lose to Utah (high octane punting!), but you need to pull your heads out of your asses.

More players and better average rating. Here's all I need to know about Dantonio in terms of recruiting. Michigan is going through it's worst hire and is 0-3 against MSU. Michigan due to it's painfully late switching of coaches is left with 10 commitments 2-3 weeks before signing day. I would say at that point 18 is far more the norm. ND isn't exactly doing much noteworthy. OSU has NCAA speculation swirling. MSU is coming off a co-Big Ten title. If there was ever a chance for MSU to swing in and pull off a quality class, it was last year. Michigan still beat them.

State even up to that point hadn't really surged in terms of recruiting either despite having the free reign. You see games like the bowl game last year and you start to see the sheer difference in talent. It's why I shook my head last year at seeing them split the conference when you watch them play and they came off as rather pedestrian. FYI, Dantonio has yet to win a bowl game with MSU. The local paper said last year that State seems to the team who gets matched up against a highly talented team for their bowl game. This is basically admitting your team isn't really all that talented. I really hope Wisconsin pays them back for that loss last year and buries MSU.

JonInMiddleGA 10-15-2011 03:26 PM

Pick 6 for the Jackets (following a blitz sack on the previous play) ... it's 14-14 in Charlottesville.

Ohio St hockey whupping up on Illinois 3-0 going into intermission.

Illini can't get anything going on offense, in part because they keep dropping 3rd down passes.

Michigan got beat by a better team. State came into this season one of the favorites in the Big Ten. They are an established team with a senior QB and played at home. They are as good as they will ever be.

Michigan is on the way back. Next year should be fun.
