hrm. Strange since I saw that the OT forum is Private when I wasn't signed in.

dubb93 12-01-2012 05:50 PM

Noticed it too.

molson 12-01-2012 05:51 PM

Does this mean we can post porn now?

Marmel 12-01-2012 08:21 PM

IDK, but this is a total pain in the ass.

sovereignstar v2 12-01-2012 08:38 PM

Don't like it.

dubb93 12-01-2012 10:08 PM

I usually only log in to post. Now it seems I have to log in all the time.

Ned Doolittle 12-01-2012 10:45 PM

quite annoying, now i can't lurk anymore.

Kodos 12-01-2012 11:11 PM

This is the worst thing to happen since someone tried to post a public poll about the presidential election! Where's the privacy!!11!

MikeVic 12-02-2012 11:27 AM

Yeah, I've gotten to the point where a lurk once in awhile and log in even less. Not sure how often I'll be coming back here if I can't lurk. Just logged in to say that.

mckerney 12-02-2012 11:32 AM

It certainly makes browsing from work a bit difficult.

molson 12-02-2012 01:12 PM

So seriously though, anyone in the know want to chime in here? Sometimes it seems like there's a concerted effort to accelerate this board's inevitable demise.

Logan 12-02-2012 05:05 PM

Try posting a nudie pic to get someone's attention.

you aren't important enough to get any kind of response.

You're right - where's Ksyrup?

MJ4H 12-02-2012 05:49 PM

i dont like it either

DaddyTorgo 12-02-2012 05:58 PM

Maybe it was some default-change by OS or something and the mods aren't aware of it/able to do anything about it guys. We don't know yet.

terpkristin 12-02-2012 06:03 PM

Weird. Then again when I'm not home I use Tapatalk so wouldn't notice. I will note that Tapatalk just stopped having some errors with this forum, so maybe something is going on under the hood...

DanGarion 12-02-2012 06:25 PM

Yeah this makes no sense. Sad.

Ned Doolittle 12-02-2012 08:10 PM

there isn't enough going on about FOF (other than the card game no one cares about...oops did i say that out loud?) to come here, Off Topic is reallt where its at. and if i have to go through a few extra steps to come here and view Off Topic then i have to start asking myself is this really worth the trouble? i like to take the pulse of the board quickly during work on my phone, i don't have time to go through the whole log in process. this is lame and should change. like quickly.

Raiders Army 12-02-2012 08:11 PM

Curse you for making me log in just to see the hilarity in the Walmart strike thread.

panerd 12-02-2012 10:10 PM

Guests are usually the only people who are ever "viewing" a thread that I start. I've lost my limited audience!

JonInMiddleGA 12-02-2012 10:12 PM

I think I've intentionally logged out here maybe 3 times in a decade. WTH is with you people, you mean you actually log out & back in routinely?

MJ4H 12-02-2012 10:13 PM

no just never log in at all anymore

My computer at work resets the Internet so I would have to login every time. I usually login just to post. Same with my iPhone it seems to lose my cookies like every five days or so. Not sure it is as big of a deal as people are making (unless I am unaware of something) but it is annoying.

Ned Doolittle 12-02-2012 10:27 PM

its not so much about being annoying, its just the main draw of this place used to be about FOF, but that was waaaay back. since we've all moved on from FOF except the same 4 or so people who are in each other's leagues its just a matter of taking the time to formally log in as opposed to just getting the content you want anonymously. do i want to go through the trouble of logging in everytime i wanna read the Walking Dead thread? good conversation, but i could take it or leave it. why do i have to log in for that stuff? i don't like the way this community is run, by being a lurker it allows me to be on the outside looking in and makes me feel like all the wacky decisions that get made here don't affect me since i'm not participating. when i formally have to log in it makes me feel like i'm trying to be part of the crowd here which isn't the case. i like being anonymous.

Welcome to the community, Ned. ;)

molson 12-02-2012 11:22 PM

The only change for me is that I probably won't check the site on my phone as often, I'm just curious what the upside is.....Obviously they want more people logged into the forum, I guess that's an advertising thing?

stevew 12-02-2012 11:45 PM

I don't think 93 people logged in instead of 67 is going to make much of a difference.

DanGarion 12-03-2012 12:16 AM

I would really like to hear Ben's take on this.

DanGarion 12-03-2012 12:33 AM

Honestly putting more thought into this it makes no sense. It's completely counter to what Operation Sports would want the admins of this site to do because it will kill page views. Those people that normally lurk will not login or not create accounts, which will reduce the amount of page views, in turn that will lower the value of the site to Operation Sports because it will not generate as much revenue as they are accustomed to...

I'm just going to assume someone made a mistake, since hiding the most active forum on your message board with the most conversation and most page views is basically shooting yourself in the foot.

stevew 12-03-2012 12:38 AM

Ben's dealing with something, but where are the other people at.

Autumn 12-03-2012 10:10 AM

Yeah, I'm with Jon. I don't know if I'd even remember my password if I had to log-in again, I've been logged in for years. Years!

spleen1015 12-03-2012 10:19 AM

You guys really think we're going to hear from a mod about this?

of course, this goes against the most holy of rules: thou shalt not fuck with people browsing from work OH NOES!!!

Autumn 12-03-2012 10:35 AM

What better? No access from work or bikini babes at work?

molson 12-03-2012 10:49 AM

It is kind of amusing that so many mod decisions here are about trying to help people visit the board from work, and then there's this change which makes it more difficult to post from work.

Autumn 12-03-2012 10:55 AM

This is the first stage of a coup by the members of the Cool Images thread. Workers-from-home and laxly-supervised workers unite!

Yea, either that or the porn. I'm confident one way or the other a mod will be in here.

God it would really suck if you stopped coming here. You are very interesting!

Suicane75 12-03-2012 06:33 PM

The sky is certainly not falling but after 48 hours it'd be nice if someone in the know said something about whether this is permanent or what's the what with what's going on.

I'm sure he was more interesting prior to being banned and starting that new account.

Edit: I think the change is dumb, as is putting 40-year old people in "time out", but the one upside is that this thread contains lurkers threatening not to lurk anymore, which is fun.

Raiders Army 12-03-2012 08:04 PM

Soooooo....

cuervo72 12-03-2012 08:12 PM

Actually, I asked Ben about this today. He was otherwise pretty occupied (trying to juggle work and his hospitalized mother), but indicated that this was a temporary solution for dealing with some recently banned asshats (paraphrasing). Seems they lurk looking for other instances of "bad" behavior, and then bitch at him for not banning those users as well. This is why we can't have nice things.

Once the dicks in question finally give up, we can go back to normal. At least, that's how I understood things.

Buccaneer 12-03-2012 08:15 PM

Who else was banned recently besides PhillesFanxx?

cuervo72 12-03-2012 08:20 PM

That's probably the main asshat -- I'm not really up on who all the banned users are, but was aware of that one.

That HifiRevival guy too.

DanGarion 12-03-2012 10:23 PM

Why don't we just ignore the asshats and don't let them get the better of you...?

molson 12-03-2012 10:28 PM

PhillesFanxx is under the impression that he was banned for criticizing the Solecismic company's product and now he apparently spends his days scanning the forums for anything else that may be construed as a criticism as which point HE STRIKES! He is a pathetic individual, but can't the mods just block his email or whatever?

cuervo72 12-03-2012 10:31 PM

I can't answer that (DG) - without having to deal with whatever shit is coming coming his way into his e-mail first-hand, I can't really question how he's dealing with it.

spleen1015 12-04-2012 07:24 AM

As a skilled button pusher in real life, if he gets ignored, he will go away.

Ben E Lou 12-04-2012 07:54 AM

As far as I know, it wasn't the Philliefan guy, but I really don't know or care. (FWIW, he is banned for good. I have zero interest in having someone around who would maliciously and falsely attempt to hurt the livelihood of another board member.)

No, I suspect the latest round was from someone else. We even got a reported post from a banned user. And no, they don't get to me, but these people are like children; for their own betterment, they need to be reminded that actions have consequences. 'Twas the easiest way I could think of for this particular person to experience consequences since I didn't have time to look up all of his IPs and ban them. I'll open the board up again at some time in the near future. I've also permanently removed the ability for banned/suspended users to report posts. (No idea why that's the default in vBulletin.)

By the way, if you want to get my attention, posting a thread with a title that suggests it's not about football or text sims usually isn't the best way to do it. In case you haven't noticed, I have fairly strong opinions and am not exactly shy about expressing them. ;) Point being, I'm guessing that I reply to 90-99% of the threads that I read, so if I haven't replied to a thread, I probably haven't read it. I usually read PMs and reported posts very quickly, though. It wasn't until Cuerv mentioned it to me yesterday morning that I even knew that people were asking about it. (And yeah, I'm in the category that several have mentioned who rarely/never logs out, so I didn't really consider the possibility that regulars would even care.)

Lathum 12-04-2012 08:48 AM

Someone tried to hurt the livelihood of another member? That is messed up. Can anyone give a brief synopsis?

Philliesfan was being a douchebag in Jim's thread abuot his board game. Not even legit criticism, just like...almost personal attacks (I don't recall the exact words). Philliesfan then went over to BoardGameGeeks and proceeded to take the douchebaggyness onto that board after being boxed (or maybe insta-banned) here.

Ben E Lou 12-04-2012 09:03 AM

Lathum, he said stuff over there at a thread meaning to promote the board game attacking Solecismic Software and Jim's character. Probably the worst was along the lines of "I have watched this guy for a long time. Beware. He will take your money and then not send the game to you." Those weren't the *exact* words, but it was dang close to that. He tried to give the impression that he was speaking from experience that Jim would take money and not send the game. At the time he did that, he was merely suspended from here. But in thinking more about it, I decided that that's just not someone I ever want back here again. (I think it's the first time I've ever made a modding decision based on something that happened away from FOFC. ;))

Please don't check any of Pumpy's Facebook pics :(.

RedKingGold 12-04-2012 09:23 AM

I do get a kick out of people upset that they can't lurk anymore. I lurked for years until I discovered that whole "log me in whenever I visit this site" button that was in the upper-right hand corner.

Is it really THAT big of a deal for a two page thread? (which I'm adding to, but the point still holds!)

Ned Doolittle 12-04-2012 09:56 AM

Problem solved, heading back to the shadows and lurking from a comfortable distance. Someone should post something for my general amusement, start drama for my entertainment. Byeee.

Like I said on page 1 it really isn't a huge deal but at my work the cookies are reset when I turn off my computer so now when I attempt to visit the website I get a login screen and have to login instead of "lurking" and then logging in when I felt like posting. Not a huge deal really but it does answer your question.

As far as not allowing non-members to lurk I guess I would only add that I sometimes will go to a forum to look for a solution to a techincal problem or to read an upcoming Mizzou opponents fans thoughts and it is pretty annoying when I can't get on just to lurk without registering. I guess Jim hasn't released a game in a while but it would cut down on customers and ad views for the site to not allow lurkers.

That's really messed up. While I am extremely disappointed (words cannot express how much) that Jim decided to go with a board game, I have the utmost of respect (again, words cannot express how much) I have for Jim and what he's done in his professional career. He has given me many hundreds of hours of enjoyment for a very little cost. If I had 1/100th the drive and desire he has, I would've created my own game.

This person is an imbecile, jerk, and all-around douchebag in that he (she?) would falsely denigrate someone else's livelihood. What would happen if we told this person's boss what they did? How would they like that?

Fuck 'em.

stevew 12-04-2012 06:33 PM

Yeah, I'm also pretty disappointed, but I think trashing and lying is way uncalled for.

Wow, that is crazy.

I posted a while back looking for info on getting a license for a game I bought but the computers were long gone, and Jim just gave me one saying he knew I was a long time member here and wouldn't try and screw him ( my words, not his)

FYI- Kind of ironic someone named Philliesfan would be a douche (ducks)

RedKingGold 12-04-2012 09:42 PM

Because if he were named GiantsFan, he'd just go cry in the corner about how unfair life is and FOFC Members who get special treatment.

(Sorry, couldn't resist)
