EU4 - K'iche, (Now Maya) the New Hegemon
Hello all, I hope that you are having a great day today! My old PC was getting up of 7 years old, and I picked up a top of the line one a few weeks ago. One of the things I was looking forward to was later in the game EU4 play where slow down could be difficult to fight against.
Welcome to my latest dynasty. Who am I playing this time? In my most recent dynasty I took Sukhothai in SE Asia and turned it into a regional power, allied with China. I grew to having the 2nd best economy, and a powerful army and navy. My goals recently have been to take some of the hardest nations in the 1444 start like Pskov, Sukhothai, and Athens and turn them into game winning power-houses. So which one am I taking? Some of my finalists in the last few times including Mzab, a poor Berber nation, Theodoro, a poor one-province at the tip of Crimea and easily eatable, Navarra surrounded on four sides by great powers of the age with no expansion possible, Sarig Yogir, small clan nation next to China and a few more. I have never run a North American holding. What I am looking up is something different. How about K’iche? Whom? |
![]() ![]() ![]() We are in this packed dense area to the south east coast. I have pulled up one of our regions. |
You can check them out here:
Kʼicheʼ kingdom of Qʼumarkaj - Wikipedia As you can see, the K'iche (spelled without the ' in the game) are one of the former Mayan Empire states in the region. They set up a while ago and are in their classic gowns right now in the mid-1400s, about 25 years before their decline begins. Welcome to the K'iche people living in in Guatemala! |
Oh, one quick note - please note that the game will call most nations during this era by their cultural group. So we are the K'ieche people, living in the area of state of Qʼumarkaj, which isn't fully represented by the game, as you will see soon.
I chose this nation after it came it top in an "usual dynasties to play" list online looking for inspiration. With unique ideas that resemble a powerful merchant nation, K'iche is supposed to play like the Meso-American Lubeck, founder of the Hanseatic League, and bringer of that cash. I thought that would be a fun challenge here, and, as you'll see, we have some serious disadvantages: (Oh, by the by, we'll be using the game's spelling) |
Note that unlike the vast blob to most of our west, Kiche does not share any of the same religion – Nahuatl. We don’t have their DOOM counters and mechanics, and we don’t need to balance them.
Instead we are looking to the Mayan faith: ![]() There you can see that we need to grow to 20, and then we can pass a reform, after which we release cores and shrink in size. Then we have to grow again, and regain that land. The national size after each reform is passed will be bigger. Note that one of the reforms is a boost to colonists. My goal is to beeline for that and grab that and then expand colonially and militarily to help get the rest done. |
Now let's do some window dressing for ya!
Tecun Uman has been declared a National Hero of Guatemala and they have a holiday each year to celebrate him. He was one of the last leaders of the K'iche people. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() As you can see he's on coins and bills, statues and more. These are not a forgotten people in Guatemala at least. Mostly in ruins now,Qʼumarkaj is big. ![]() Their people are still around: ![]() |
My Goals:
1. Expand quickly into a nearby and useful place to get us a powerful economic footprint moving forward. 2. Get to 20 as mercilessly as possible, with as little time as needed. 3. Run the first development, take the colonists, and cut my nation down to 10 ish. 4. Colonize and retake those places to get back to 20 5. Repeat until I have fully evolved the Mayan faith 6. Westernize and evolve once Europe arrives 7. In the meantime expand into local areas south and take the entire region for the glory of Maya 8. Bring all of Maya under my control. Reclaim the Mayan dynasty. 9. Head north and west into those filthy Nahuatl lands and convert them after we bring them in to the true Mayan faith. 10. Evolve into the most powerful hegemon here. 11. Become the only remaining power in Central America. 12. Expand up and down to keep out and meet any Europeans 13. Westernize 14. Kick out any Europeans that bother me overly much after Westernization. |
Here’s our land:
Guatemala – Coastal, hills, 7 dev, Cocoa plantations are the key economic holding here, Mayan and Highland Mayan culture are here, and they send us 0.50 each month. Qumarkaj – Inland, Cocoa, Highland and Mayan, capital, Jungle, 7 dev, 0.50 made here as well I have 5000 spearmen and I order them to 50% maintenance, and that gives me 1.78 in cash surplus monthly, a solid economic base. I send out a merchant to Mexico. Our ruler is young and sucks. ![]() |

Volume 12, K'iche, the New Meso-American Hegemon, Prelude – Visions of Glory I introduce a Vision Quest. This will increase our prestige gain but rise our stability cost. I declare Zapotec, Tzotzil and Itza as our rivals. 30 Nov – We enter into an alliance with Yocotan. They are rivals with two of our rivals, so they are a useful tool for my expansion. 1 Dec – I am getting 0.34 monthly in trade 5 Dec - We accept an ally from our eastern neighbors the Kaqchikel 7 Dec – They accept a royal marriage offer from us and we get a new Queen 3 Jan, 1445 – Royal Marriage with Yocotan 15 Jan – We accept an alliance from Cocomes 2 Mar – Royal Marriage with Cocomes. I order 1000 more troops in my capital 25 Aug – I finish the “Build to my Force Limit” mission, and we get boosts to land stuff for 25 years 1 Nov – Our spy network in Itza is developed enough that I claim the next province over from my capital, Tzul. I jack up my maintenance. I give my ruler command of this army, and I order another 1000 troops 2 Feb, 1446 – I get a “Cycle of Creation and Destruction” event with some rebel risk. |
I assume this has to be a modded option, right?
Regardless, is this grow/shrink/re-grow cycle unique to them? I can't say that I've ever seen anyone play anything with that particular rule, and I've seen more than my fair share of LP's. |

Two of my rivals allied and they have a big lattice of helpfulness. However, Cocomes and us divide the three holdings of Belize, so I send over some folks to set up spy network there. Volume 12, K'iche, the New Meso-American Hegemon Chapter 4 - Zapotec Taken Now, with my fast growth, do I want to war against either of my neighbors to the east? If I just brought it in one or two holdings, that’d be good. I wouldn’t even need any allies. I order 2k more troops assembled in Peten and my main army there looking for an opportunity. I finish our High Income mission and we get bonuses to more finances for 25 years 2 Feb, 1457 – I accept a RM offer from our vassal. 25 Mar – I cannot declare war on Tzotzil. I reciprocate We are now at ten, but we are massively badboyed and I need to rest a long time |

Volume 12, K'iche, the New Meso-American Hegemon Chapter 6 - Yucatan Dreams 1 Apr, 1465 – I fabricate a claim in Tzotzil. ![]() While I am paused, here’s a map of the area. You can see us. Many of the neighbors have had their negative view of us drop to little. Here you can see the Aztec, without a major issue with us now. I order my forces to Champutun. Option 2 – Take Campeche and vassalize Chorti – 11.6 badboy. Nah. I TAKE THEM All. I am the Warmonger of Love. The three badboy now up front is worth removing them and getting more and more land to get me to that first. Again I want to be ruthless right now. This is how you do it. Campeche – You know it. It costs me 78.13 for all three advisors. But it restores my 13/8/8 balance. After that change, I am still bringing in that cash: ![]() It’s basically winds up that the policy cost is being paid by cash. You can also see the current 10K in cash I’m sitting on, as well as my other things up there Oh, and once I set up in East Timor, I can swap my advisor for something else, I won’t need a Navigator’s +20% range. 1 July – Gems in Suriname 1 Sept – Humanist Idea (needs 395) +6 – We get +30 influence relations 1 Oct – Fish in Kumeyaay 22 Dec – Conversion! |

Note that the Mamelukes have expanded here colonially. We have Castile in the Andamans over by Khmer, Portugal in a few islands. They know of the area and are here. They just haven’t entered the Indies proper, but we have. We have come in from the east side and jumped the Pacific Ocean. We haven’t; touched anywhere else, like New Zealand, Australia, etc We have an Aragonese colony in Africa, and the Dutch have arrived in South America. Lots of competition. These are active colonizers: Aragon Netherlands England France Castille Mamelukes Portugal Maya I am changing my goals. Volume 12c, Maya Restored, the New Meso-American Hegemon Chapter 5 - Death into Life 1 Feb, 1657 – Naval Supplies in Miami ![]() Know what? I have pushed all of my advisors up to level 5, just to see what would happen. I’m losing 3 gold a month with my massive advisor maintenance and this is with ten colonies right now as well, as we finish off Baja California, that should drop. Right now we have two about ready to finish. I thought about dropping my naval or army maintenance to stay at positive cashflow, but with 9382, I can do this for years and remain above 9000 cash, although eventually I’d wanna change it. This raises my advisers level to 14/8/10 though. 9 April – At the age of 68 our ruler has died! I spend 193 ADM TO boost my stability back up wiping me out for a bit. 27 April – Royal Marriage with Quito gives us a queen ![]() As you can see, my new ruler is a very, very weak 2/1/2, dropping me to 11/6/9 with my level 5 advisers. You can see my heir, his younger brother, there who’s much better. The heir has gained infertile, which is not good. However, he is expansionistic. I’ll show you: ![]() This is my stability and expansion tab. This is where you’d see my rebels or issues if we have any (we don’t). You can see my colonial range and colonial growth there. I am getting 180 colonists per year in a colony that doesn’t get any boosts. That means one colony will finish in 5.5 years, without any additional help. With a colonist there, there is a chance each month to get some free boosts, and we get the occasional event due to me taking the ideas expansion and exploration to boost a colony with a few hundred people every couple of years or so. (I just got one for Miami a few months ago) Now, let’s compare that: UK that has invested heavily? 120 Dutch? 65 France? 105 We have made this our thing, and the Emperor agrees. |
