Gridzone: Turf War - The Canadian Gridzone League
The purpose of this dynasty will be to track the evolution of the Canadian Gridzone League. The games will be played using the Gridzone: Turf War board game recently released by Stone Mountain Press.
This is a second edition of the game, the first being available for free - but the second has been streamlined and the first couple of play throughs were a lot of fun. Gary's games always tend to evoke a strong narrative feel and dramatic moments. The high level summary of that game is that it's football - but: - points are gained by advancing the ball from your own "zero" yard line - 1 pt per ten yard zone with a bonus 5 pts for a TD. 14pts total for a successful drive. -There's no clock - just a set number of plays -There are no special teams. -It's 7 on 7 The game rules are meant to have some "abstraction" where each play is just a "key play" from a series - but I like it better where it's just a play is a play. I've completed the initial draft using some tools I'd built in Python for the first game and am excited to dig in! Won't commit to doing the whole season - my main objective is to get familiar enough with the engine to pick up again on the app I was building for the first edition. |
Game 1 - Edmonton Elk home to Toronto Northmen
Edmonton Preview: Edmonton coach Cynthia Fox didn't get to where she was as the first female coach in the CGL without being pragmatic and ruthless with her planning and preparation. That's why she's frustrated with accusations that she built her team based on gender lines. "Our draft strategy was based on taking the best player available. As it happens, 5 of our 7 starters on offense are female. I can't stop the press from making it a talking point, but the team is ready to go out and prove they're the best." Edmonton's "Grrl Power" offense is led by a trio of female weightlifters, led by Finn Marketta Porthen. These three will clear a path for the mobile and multi-talented HB Alexandria Humphries and veteran QB Shelly King. |
Toronto Preview
Toronto's first 4 picks in the placement draft were on the defensive side of the ball. The have a star pass rusher in DL Aaron Jarrett and 2 excellent corners in Alice Hibbs and Donovan Butler. Unfortunately, this led to a bit of a mess on the offensive side of the ball. Toronto's hopes rest on the future growth and development of rookie QB Dean Suchanek but it could be a long season on that side of the ball. |
Edmonton's season gets off to a rough start as their first play is stuffed for a loss and results in a safety. This means no points on their first possession and Toronto starts their possession on the 2 zone line.
Toronto has 3 huge passing plays on the following drive to score. Toronto's D is looking dominant for the first half of the game. An Elks INT and huge running play put Edmonton back in the hunt, down 17-14 after 4 possessions. EDM makes another big stop late. An unbelievable defensive miscue during EDM's furious late scramble almost opens the door to defeat but star WR John Bier comes up one zone short...the extra points if he'd scored would have put them ahead but it's a 1 pt loss in an exciting first game! Home EDM 0 0 0 14 9 --->23 Away TOR 14 1 2 9 --->26 Final Toronto Northmen 26 Edmonton Elk 23 |
Our second game of the season features a battle of strength vs strength as the Saskatoon Storm host the Montreal Machine.
Saskatoon has based it's offense on a 2 HB option style offense featuring HB Malachi Wilson (1-3-1) and scrambling QB Dylan Henderson(1-2-1). A trio of brusing OL lead the way upfront Sam Smith (3-1-3), Amari Moses (2-2-1) and Gord Boroski (1-2-2). The def is balanced but no one stands out. Montreal led their draft with 7 consecutive defensive picks. Everyone on the defense hates to give up run yards from two hulking DL upfront in Mitchell Jones (1-3-2) and Julian Castle (0-2-2) to LB Nick Barnes (0-3-2) and Thurman Leonhardt (2-3-0). Offensively, only HB Arhippa Heino (1-2-0) and WR Kevin Ogletree (2-0-0) standout. |
SSK starts with a drive that emphasizes the deception aspects of their offense and scores a TD. MTL answers back with a big play but a sack ends the drive.
Near mid-point of the game, score is 20-10 Saskatoon. Third DL Judah Roberts is having a great game with a sack, a huge hit and a pass knock down. HB Heino has a big segment from T17 to T21, where he gets clobbered and stunned - but rallies to run well and lead MTL to a touchdown. Saskatoon gets the ball back down 24-21 starting on T22. WR Aardal takes a trick play reverse for 6 to put Saskatoon up 27-24 leading into crunch time. Malachi Wilson shakes off a stun to score, making it 35-24 Saskatoon. MTL has 2 plays to score a TD to win. They gain 3 but that's it - call the final Saskatoon 35 - MTL 27. |
Game 3 preview
The luck did not go in Vancouver's favour in the inaugural CGL draft. They have a pair of very good corners in Noah Blood (3-1-1) and Stephen Miles (2-1-2) and a solid LB in Irishman Sid York (2-2-1) but the rest of team tended to be late round picks, with no real standouts. The passing offense led by QB Clarence Roberts (2-0-1) is likely to be their main asset on that side of the ball. Calgary's offense is centered around 2nd overall pick, Tony Klassen (3-2-0), a mobile, young gunslinger who is likely to be one of the best QB's in the league for a long time. They also have young WR Paul Williams (3-1-1) and a coach in Kenyon Thomas who is absolutely dedicated to finding a way to get the ball downfield. This team will likely live up to their Gunslinger name. Defense was a bit of an after thought, but the line will be anchored by stout and instinctive English DL Bertrand Farrall (0-2-3). |
Calgary comes out slinging but quickly throws an incompletion after gaining 6 zones. Vancouver marches down the field to score a TD in 3 plays.
Calgary responds to that drive by scoring a TD in 2 plays. It's 20-14 Calgary on T8! Privett takes his team on his back to score a TD for Vancouver. But Calgary makes a defensive stop and puts a good drive of their own together. It's 31-28 Calgary but they give the ball back to Vancouver late. Vancouver puts together masterful last drive and scores as time expires to win 42-31. https://www.dropbox.com/s/chlhrhvvei...lgary.jpg?dl=0 |
Game Preview
Ottawa head coach John Gantt heads up another team that has fully embraced the run game on offense. Where Saskatoon layers in option and deception plays, Ottawa is 100% focused on smash mouth football. HB's Ronnie MacDonald (1-3-2) (OOC, this is 100% a randomly generated name and I think it's hilarious) and Avis Short (0-3-0) are fronted by a trio of mauling offensive linemen. This team will only throw the ball to make sure the QB is still awake and ready to act as a vehicle to hand the ball off. The defense was a second priority but they have corners who can stop the pass and a front 7 specialised to stop the run. Regina is fronted by coach Bill Toms, who is a big believer in balance. Their offense will be keyed by star wideout Brett Charron (3-0-2) in his 2nd year, rookie QB Elroy Dawson (2-0-1) and competent veteran Maria Ploughman (2-0-2). Corner Kirk Schaffer (2-0-2) captains a balanced defense that's a real mix of youth and veteran skill. GAME LOG Both teams start their opening possessions with TD drives that highlight their respective strengths. 14-14 at T10 The same pattern repeats for possesion 2, except Regina answers back quicker! 28-28 near the half way point Regina gets a defensive stop on the third series, then has a long 7 pt drive. They turn the ball over on T23, up 35-28 Ottawa scores in 2 plays - up 42-35 with two plays left for Regina. DL Duane Dill stuffs an option play - OTT adds 3 on the last play and thats the game - final OTT 45 - REG 35. Both teams accounted for themselves very well! https://www.dropbox.com/s/rxel0o8mi0...20OTT.jpg?dl=0 |
Game preview - Winnipeg Swarm at Halifax Schooners
Winnipeg coach John Bray is the best offensive mind in the game. Pair that mind with the beautiful robo-cannon arm of 2nd year QB of Kevin Frye (3-0-0) and you have the makings of a beautiful long term relationship. Grizzled veteran HB Sam Hensley (0-3-1) and WR Isiah Butler (2-2-2) and former pole vaulter Phillipa Pippy (2-0-1) round out an excellent set of of skill players - but can Bray scheme his way out of a relatively weak OL? Halifax had fairly rough luck in the draft, especially late. The Halifax defense looks to be stout against the run with Serbian LB Dragutin Kordic (0-3-2) and DL bull Jamari McDowell (2-3-0) leading the way. Their offense is led by experienced Russian WR Bogdaska Faustov (2-1-2) and French Canadian QB Musette Desaulniers(2-0-0). GAME LOG Pretty tight game with some big defensive plays. HB Cott carrying the offensive load for Halifax. Winnipeg's offense has moved well but unable to land a killer blow. WPG leads 26-22 after three possessions each, heading into T20. WPG DB Vickery seemingly sets his team up for a chance to win with a huge late pass deflection, but HAL DL Tellier closes out his monster game by stuffing a runner in the backfield for a safety. HAL then closes the game out with a slow, methodical drive keyed by a timely saving catch from Faustov. Final HAL 31 - WPG 26 https://www.dropbox.com/s/qjzm7lsogn...20HAL.jpg?dl=0 https://www.dropbox.com/s/yii4zu7dnr...20OFF.png?dl=0 https://www.dropbox.com/s/hdqu87mgr1...20OFF.png?dl=0 |
Game preview - Winnipeg Swarm (0-1) @ Saskatoon Storm (1-0)
Winnipeg comes into their second away game in a row to start the season, coming off a disappointing loss to Halifax. Saskatoon won a hard fought battle against Montreal and are grateful to start the season with 2 home games. The two offenses are very different stylistically, with Winnipeg relying on the arm of QB Kevin Frye (3-0-0) and a competent set of WRs including Isiah Butler (2-2-2) who was responsible for 18 of Winnipegs 26 pts vs Halifax. Saskatoon will look to keep WPG's excellent DB's from being a factor by relying on their deception based option playbook and legs of Malachi Wilson (1-3-1). Game Log Saskatoons offense comes out firing while Winnipeg is stuttering a bit as they try to establish a run game. They should probably focus on trying to use their QB more as Saskatoon's D is stuffing the run. It's 22-5 at T14. Wilson has ground WPG down, despite a hit that hurt him a bit. His physical, grinding style has taken away chances for WPGs offense to shine. It's 29-5, WPG ball on T20. Winnipeg has a great drive late with highlight level plays including a hurdle by pole valuter Pippy - but Saskatoon gets the ball back and takes the air out of it. Saskatoon wins 34-19. John Bray's playcalling for WPG likely to be called into question until the next game. https://www.dropbox.com/s/celfvsudt6...20SSK.jpg?dl=0 |
Game log - Toronto Northmen (1-0) @ Vancouver Vendetta (1-0)
Toronto could not get anything going in this game. Even their big plays didn't pan out. On T19, star pass rusher absolutely devastated VAN QB Clarence Roberts for a sack, but the ball was scooped up by HB Jayson Privett and advanced 4 zones for a TD! Torontos defense has been making attempts to keep them in it - but its 32-4 on T20 and this is turning into a demoralizing rout! Vancouver will be hoping Roberts can recover from that devastating blindside hit... TOR had a nice drive late but this loss will hurt - the defense in particular made big plays and didn't see any benefit from it. Final VAN 35 - TOR 18 Scoresheet: https://www.dropbox.com/s/kpsgddjkcc...20VAN.jpg?dl=0 |
Good stuff, I bought the game in PDF Format, haven't had a chance to try it out.

Thanks so much for posting, SirFozzie - always feels better to know someone likes what you’re posting. I built an Excel helper that’s posted on the Stone Mountain website. It has a game sheet and a team builder that I find easier than the PowerPoint tool. |
W2 G3 Game report
Edmonton Elk (0-1) @ Montreal Machine (0-1) Montreal ran their offensive game plan pretty much flawlessly, and it included a steady diet of RB Arhippa Heino (0-2-0), who accounted for 24 of MTL's 38 points both through the air and brute force on the ground. Montreal beats the Elk - 38-15 - to move to 1-1. Edmonton slides to 0-2. https://www.dropbox.com/s/xuy3jungdz...treal.png?dl=0 |
If I ever design a game like this, it'll feature something I call jittertime. Kinda like OT, where if the margin is within one "full score" then the trailing team gets one chance to take the lead, and then the team that was leading gets a chance.
Can't decide whether it should be one time only or multiple times. For example Team A leads Team B 24-21 entering Jittertime. Team B gets one possession. If they score three points or more (to tie or take the lead), the game is extended one more possession. Team A would then have one possession to move ahead of Team B. (then either end of game, or back to Team B to try to extend it further. |
That’s a cool idea - almost like an extendable sudden death shootout. Definite similarities to college football OT, which is the best of all overtime formats in my opinion...can only imagine the tension!
|
Ottawa Aces (1-0) @ Halifax Schooners (1-0)
Ottawa's offense is basically a car crash ending in a cloud of dust on every play. They bludgeon their way down the field for a TD drive of 5 plays and another of 8, broken up by a series of 3 stops in between. They lead 28-0 at T17 Halifax can get nothing going at all on offense. DB Flynn Moore makes an interception late, Rotten Ronnie MacDonald manhandles the Schooner defense and Ottawa has a dominating 39-3 win. MacDonald with 8 carries for 20 zones on the ground, 2 catches for 3 zones in the air and a pair of TDs for a total of 33 points. https://www.dropbox.com/s/w2o0kflgvv...ttawa.png?dl=0 https://www.dropbox.com/s/8yipioiu8p...20OFF.jpg?dl=0 |
Week 2 Game 5
Calgary Gunslingers (0-1) @ Regina Raiders (0-1) Last game of week 2 sees a clash of two high powered offenses and teams that both lost their first outing to very good teams. Regina may have a slight edge being at home and having the better pass defense of the two times - but many around the league are expecting a shootout. Game Story Regina executes flawlessly with QB Elroy Dawson going 8 for 8, for 30 zones and 2 TDs for 40 total points. Charron leads the way with 4 catches, 14 zones and 2 TDs. Calgary's offense continues to show signs of potential but has been sunk two games in a row by mistakes by young QB Klassen. A breakout game shouldn't be far off... https://www.dropbox.com/s/agpwqnsm97...egina.jpg?dl=0 |
Week 3 Game 1 - Game preview
Ottawa Aces (2-0) @ Vancouver Vendetta (2-0) Interesting matchup between two teams with 2-0 records. An interesting mix of styles, with Ottawa's devastating running game and Vancouver's high performing passing offense. Vancouver's balanced defense and home advantage may be a factor in this game - Ottawa's defense has some holes in their passing defence that could leave them vulnerable. Game report Vancouver starts strong, buoyed by an efficient passing attack early. But a big pass breakup by DB1 Beaton leads to a huge MacDonald run to put Ottawa up 28-22 at T16. Deaton is starting to take over the game, with a pick for a safety to go with his knockdown. T20 Highlight: DL Adam Adams crushes MacDonald, forcing a fumble, scooped up by QB Clary run for [3] + TD! He hits MacDonald again to end the game, possible cementing a rivalry - but Ottawa ends up dominating, winning 45-26 and establishing themselves as a team to beat at 3-0. https://www.dropbox.com/s/ab3uoz0aid...ouver.jpg?dl=0 |
Love this game. I picked up the PDF to try it out and so far I think it is great. I already have the Dice United game which I also love. The big attraction for me is I can play a game in 20-30 minutes versus an hour plus with most more detailed games.
|
Quote:
Is Dice United pretty similar how it’s laid out? I love the level of detail it sits at - enough “crunch” to keep your interest but not enough to bog down... I started waiting until end of game to do stats, so I’m down to 15-20 minutes play time. Keeping season stats, so that takes longer. Trying to get motivated to program some tools to speed things up. Thanks for posting/following along - hoping to get a game or two in over the weekend. |
Preview Saskatoon Storm (2-0) vs Montreal Machine (1-1)
Rematch of a week one battle that saw Saskatoon win 35-27. Will a reversal of home field advantage tip the scales back toward Montreal and their strong run defense? Game Log Montreal start strong with an efficient TD drive and Saskatoon answers back with a drive featuring RB2 Jaidan Nash (0-1-1). Both offenses score again on their second drives, with Montreal making big pass plays to Ogletree and Saskatoon using some wrinkles to add some passing to their offense. Another perfect 3rd drive for Montreal - 3 players stunned as this matchup turns extremely physical! Saskatoon, down 42-28 needs to execute a perfect drive in 5 plays to tie. Montreal bats down a pass and runs out the clock - they win 45-32. |
Week 3 Game 3 - Game preview
Calgary Gunslingers (0-2) @ Toronto Blizzard (1-1) Calgary's potentially high-flying offense is looking like one of the league's worst after 2 disappointing games. Both teams prefer to move the ball through the air, so will be interesting to see which team performs best. Game notes Calgary will be happy to finally have a strong offensive outing. 2 key stops early allowed them to negate home field advantage and the offense kept the throttle down to pull away convincingly. CAL WR Paul Williams (3-1-1) led the way with 6 catches for 19 zones and 3 TD's for 34 total points. Tony Klassen (3-2-0) threw 11 times, completing 10 for 27 zones and 3 TDs for 42 total points. Sweeney (1-2-2) was one of the lone bright spots for TOR, catching the ball 3x for 12 zones. QB Suchanek was 7 for 7, 21 zones and 2 TDs in a losing cause. https://www.dropbox.com/s/0g3h3jc3lq...ronto.jpg?dl=0 |

Dice United is pretty much the same idea. Key plays of the game, tracking for goals, saves, cards etc. |
Week 3 Game 4 - Game preview
Edmonton Elk (0-2) @ Halifax Schooners (1-1) Not too much can be said about this matchup. Both teams have struggled in their first two games. Edmonton might have a slight edge in stats with WR John Bier (2-0-0) having 6-14-1 for 22 total points. EDM DB Griffith Herman (3-1-2) has 3 stops in 2 games. Game recap Edmonton was in control of the game for most of the match, keyed by strong defensive secondary performance and key plays by WR John Bier. A furious late rally by Halifax, kicked off by a thunderous hit by LB Dragutin Kordic will give Halifax some reason for optimism heading into the next week. Edmonton will be happy to finally have a consistent performance on both sides of the ball. https://www.dropbox.com/s/x85xjdj8bg...lgary.jpg?dl=0 |
Week 3 Game 5 - Game preview
Winnipeg Swarm (0-2) @ Regina Raiders (1-1) It's probably too early in the season to claim that WPG offensive mastermind coach John Bray is on the hot seat, but WPG fans will be questioning whether he's too smart for his own good given their slow start. They unquestionably have talented players, like QB Kevin Frye (3-0-0), that should suit the game plan - but haven't performed well in their first 2 outings. Regina's offense has been keyed by the great chemistry between WR Brett Charron (3-0-2) and QB Elroy Dawson (2-0-1). Dawson has thrown for 54 zones in only 2 games, where current league leader CGY Tony Klassen has thrown for 66 in 3 games. Game review Regina grinds out a methodical game plan that again keeps Winnipeg's offense off the field. WIN coach John Bray will again face questions about his commitment to the run - there's no question Hensley is a very capable back - but their offense has looked completely ineffective through 3 games... Final Regina 32 - Winnipeg 19 https://www.dropbox.com/s/g5harxqmuk...egina.jpg?dl=0 |
Week 3 review
The Ottawa Aces are the class of the league through 3 weeks, with a 65 point differential. They are winning and winning big with their punishing rushing attack. Vancouver and Montreal have also looked strong in the early going. Regina QB Elroy Dawson and Ottawa HB 'Rotten' Ronnie MacDonald have contributed the most points for their respective teams. MacDonald's rushing totals are almost double that of anyone else in the league - maybe to be expected given their run-first scheme - but still very impressive. Standings: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ujie1oe9x9...20pts.jpg?dl=0 Rushing: https://www.dropbox.com/s/hwm84pskwu...shing.jpg?dl=0 Receiving: https://www.dropbox.com/s/52wcb0mne9...iving.jpg?dl=0 Passing: https://www.dropbox.com/s/c28fki450r...ssing.jpg?dl=0 Defensive: https://www.dropbox.com/s/4mvnq4w5a6...stops.jpg?dl=0 https://www.dropbox.com/s/ujie1oe9x9...20pts.jpg?dl=0 |
Week 4 Game 1 - Game preview
Ottawa Aces (3-0) @ Edmonton Elk (1-2) Ottawa has been an absolutely dominant team through 3 weeks and are likely to be favoured even though they are visiting Edmonton. The Elk had a decent outing in their first win last week but have struggled to be a consistent threat - their excellent secondary is not likely to help against Ottawa's punishing ground game... Game report Action packed game with both defenses making multiple big plays. Edmonton has kept MacDonald in check better than any team this season - they take over on T21 down 34-25...if they can get into the endzone, they can score an upset. DB Edmond Deaton makes his 2nd interception of the day (3rd pass defense), returns it for a safety and that should be the end for Edmonton. Final Ottawa 40 - Edmonton 25 https://www.dropbox.com/s/a0w7kjvfh6...onton.jpg?dl=0 |
Question for anyone following along - is the picture showing game stats of interest? Or ok to post just the summary, with occasional breaks to review stats every couple of weeks?
Week 4 Game 2 - Game preview Vancouver Vendetta (2-1) @ Saskatoon Storm (2-1) This game looks to be a battle of two strong performing teams. Vancouver will look to be competitive in a tough away game by leveraging the talents of QB Clarence Roberts and DB Noah Blood. No other players stand out as much and Vancouver has a number of run stopping players who may help slow down Saskatoon's deception based option attack. Game summary Well played game up to T19, where VAN leads 26-15. Both defences have been making good plays with the difference being support from VAN offence with a strong aerial attack. Saskatoon with a strong 4 play scoring drive to lead 29-26 on T23, they need an early stop to seal a win. They get a key knockdown, but inexplicably pass on the next play, where Noah Blood gets another KD. 2 plays to score 3 points. A pair of long passes to WR Zack Mayfield seals the win for Vancouver in a hard fought game, 34-29! |
Week 4 Game 3 - Game preview
Toronto Blizzard (1-2) @ Montreal Machine (2-1) Toronto suffers bad luck on the opening series as DL Aaron Jarret crushes MTL QB Gao Ching, forcing a fumble - but it's scooped up by WR Howell for a big gain. QB Ching looks to be shaken up. Montreal's DL Julian Castle knocks down 2 passes, and WR Kevin Ogletree exploits holes in TOR's defense for 23 points and Montreal wins a laugher, 46-20 |
Been grinding away at a python script that will play games out automatically, with an option to resolve manually. Have the heavy lifting part complete, now it's a matter of churning through playcharts...excited to be able to play games out more quickly and see what storylines emerge! This game was rolled out the old fashioned way! I can see using both approaches in the future - with manually playing out big games and play offs!
Week 4 Game 4 - Game preview Regina Raiders (2-1) @ Halifax Schooners (1-2) On paper, this looks like a heavy mismatch in Regina's favour as one of the best point differentials in the league matches up with one of the worst. Regina is led by QB Elroy Dawson and WR Brett Charron who will look to pick up where they left off as one of the CGL's most dynamic connections. Game report Halifax was not able to generate any offence at all. Their offence and defences are looking like the league worst. The lone brightspot for them is the play of DL Jamari MacDowell who had 2 stops, a sack and a forced fumble. Regina was steady and controlled the game throughout to move to 3-1 by winning 29-5. WR Brett Charron caught 6 passes for 9 zones and a TD. |
Week 4 Game 5 - Game preview
Calgary Gunslingers (1-2) @ )Winnipeg Swarm (0-3) Two teams with talent on paper but underperforming on the scoreboards match up. Winnipeg coach John Bray will be under immense pressure to prove his worth and reputation as an offensive mastermind. Both teams feature immensely talented QB's, so it won't be a surprise to have lots of passing yardage. Game report The game turned out to be a defensive battle, with each team forcing multiple turnovers. WIN DB2 Kevin Hann had 2 pass defenses and Winnipeg had a balanced attack offensively to eak out their first win of the season - 23-18 the final. |
I still have a tonne of work to do on formatting and error checking - but wanted to show off a thing I made! Automated Turf War!
Currently in Python and text only - but plays a game in about 2.5 seconds which is a substantial improvement over the 45 minutes I normally take! Next steps are to automate season stats, clean up "crunch time" logic (which has given me nightmares) and then probably move towards a GUI for it. Going to rest up a bit before diving into error checking - I know I have some bits not working all the way....but just for fun - here's a preview of how W5 Game 1 between Calgary and Halifax might have gone! Did some high level review and looks pretty accurate. I'll really have to watch safeties and some of the logic in late game situations - but this is good enough I'll keep it as the "official" W5 G1.
Nice to see Halifax's offense put some drives together! I thought Calgary would be a much stronger team coming into the season - but they fall to 1-4 and are struggling mightily... |
W5 G2 Montreal Machine at Vancouver Vendetta
A battle between 3-1 teams pits a pretty good Vancouver offence against Montreal's very effective run stopping defence. Montreal has definitely been more dominant with a 54 point differential on the season so far. Game Report In the end, it's an unlikely story as Vancouver's defence steals the narrative. DL Wai-ho Tao makes 3 run stops and forces two fumbles, while DB Noah Blood makes an interception. VAN WR Von Sughrue catches 3 TD's in a runaway rout! W5G3 Winnipeg Swarm(1-3) @ Toronto Blizzard(1-3)
The underperforming Swarm will hope to build momentum after the previous week's first win of the season. The Blizzard have been one of the worst teams in the league - so Winnipeg coach John Bray will feel his seat getting pretty hot if they can't find a way to win this one... Game Report Well....that seat is getting pretty hot, alright... Toronto's dominant DL Aaron Jarret as a great game and TOR's DL chases WIN QB Kevin Frye all over the field for a nice home win! Winnipeg entered the season as one of only two teams with a power factor of 5, which should give them an advantage....it's not showing... [Full disclosure - I live in Saskatchewan and sports wise, it makes me happy to see a team in Winnipeg struggle. Two run heavy offences collide in this matchup. Ottawa has been the most dominant team in the league, with a +80 point differential. OTT RB Ronnie MacDonald is in the top 3 of point producers heading into the game. Game Report An absolutely shocking, heavy upset. Regina hosts Edmonton and the interesting matchup here is EDM's excellent defensive backfield and whether they can contain Regina's high flying offense, keyed by QB Elroy Dawson and WR1 Brett Charron. W6G1 Regina Raiders (4-1) @ Saskatoon Storm (3-2)
A classic interprovincial rivalry heats up once again. Both teams come into this game with reasons for optimism. Regina has performed well all year with an aggressive pass attack and Saskatoon coming off a convincing upset over Ottawa. Game Report Regina's offense makes big plays to take control early and never lets up - for a very convincing win. Regina is definitely establishing themselves as a "team to beat" through the midway point of the season. Elroy Dawson is pulling away as the dominant offensive force in the CGL, backed up by a very strong WR crew. W6G3 Halifax Schooners (2-3) @ Vancouver Vendetta (4-1)
Vancouver QB Clarence Roberts has 15 less total points on the season than Halifax's entire team. Coupled with home advantage, that should make it clear who is favoured. The gap between skill levels is equal to the geographic distance between them. Halifax had a really good outing in their last game and DL Jamari MacDowell has been a lone bright spot for HAL. Game Report *********************************** HAL DL2 Quentin Tellier has a monster game, being key player on 8 plays and stymying Vancouver's offence very well. It's not enough though as Vancouver has enough about them to power to victory in a defensive battle - keyed by the defensive efforts of DB1 Noah Blood. W6G4 Ottawa Aces (4-1) @ Toronto Blizzard (2-3)
Ottawa will look to shake off their upset loss to Saskatoon last week against regional rival Toronto. TOR has been a very volatile team on the year but Ottawa should be favoured pretty heavily. Game Report *********************************** As good as Ottawa is, it can still be a bit surprising when they dominate a team that should be "peer-level" by this much. Toronto looked like a semi-pro outfit - outplayed in every way and Ottawa also had a couple lucky bounces on fumbles that made them look even better than they were....a monumental victory. *********************************** SCORESHEET Home Toronto [1, 0, 0, 0, 5] Total: 6 Away Ottawa [14, 14, 8, 14, 2] Total: 52 ****HOME Toronto RUSHES**** Vickie McPherson Runs: 1 Run zones: 0 run TDs: 0 Fumbles:0 Roy Nielsen Runs: 1 Run zones: 2 run TDs: 0 Fumbles:0 Dean Suchanek Runs: 1 Run zones: 1 run TDs: 0 Fumbles:0 ****AWAY Ottawa RUSHES**** Ronnie MacDonald Runs: 4 Run zones: 14 run TDs: 0 Fumbles:0 Ray Coston Runs: 3 Run zones: 7 run TDs: 2 Fumbles:0 Avis Short Runs: 1 Run zones: 4 run TDs: 0 Fumbles:0 Edward Clary Runs: 1 Run zones: 0 run TDs: 1 Fumbles:1 ****HOME Toronto RECEPTIONS**** Roy Nielsen Receptions: 2 Rec_Zone: 3 Rec_TDs: 0 Vickie McPherson Receptions: 1 Rec_Zone: 2 Rec_TDs: 0 Walton Sweeney Receptions: 1 Rec_Zone: 4 Rec_TDs: 0 ****AWAY Ottawa RECEPTIONS**** Ray Coston Receptions: 2 Rec_Zone: 4 Rec_TDs: 0 Ronnie MacDonald Receptions: 1 Rec_Zone: 3 Rec_TDs: 0 ****HOME Toronto Passing**** Dean Suchanek 8/4 Zones:9 TDs:0 INT:0 Sacks:0 ****AWAY Ottawa Passing**** Edward Clary 4/3 Zones:7 TDs:0 INT:0 Sacks:1 ****HOME Toronto DEFENSIVE**** Donovan Butler Stops:1 Sacks: 0 FF:0 INT:0 RZ:0 Aaron Jarrett Stops:0 Sacks: 1 FF:1 INT:0 RZ:0 ****AWAY Ottawa DEFENSIVE**** Joe McCorkle Stops:2 Sacks: 0 FF:0 INT:0 RZ:2 Edmond Deaton Stops:1 Sacks: 0 FF:0 INT:0 RZ:0 Duane Dill Stops:1 Sacks: 0 FF:1 INT:0 RZ:1 Abel Alger Stops:1 Sacks: 0 FF:0 INT:0 RZ:0 Ira McGinn Stops:0 Sacks: 0 FF:0 INT:0 RZ:6 |
Last one for tonight - pretty gratifying to be able to process a full week in an evening - that would be 5 hours to play out manually. Lose a little bit of connection with each game - but my favorite part is the high level stats and "what happens next". I do have it set up so I can run play by play - will likely do that for playoffs.
W6G5 Winnipeg Swarm (1-4)Edmonton Elk (1-4) A battle between two teams both expected to do well in the preseaon - but with two of the worst records in the CGL. Winnipeg's talent and coaching should give them an edge - but that's been true all year and has not worked out in their favour very often. Game Report *********************************** A well fought, evenly matched game - Winnipeg needed the final three plays of the game to tie, then pass Edmonton for a very narrow win. Took way too long - but finally got automated stat tracking completed. Tried 4 different approaches and landed on a really easy one that is basically using dictionaries as an interface using SQLAlchemy in the background. Would have worked perfectly had I not decided randomly to convert player ID strings to integers....ugh....
But as of today, all I have to do to play a game is type in a name, click the button and then fill the scores in on the team page. All player stats done. Will try to automate the teams part for season 2. |

W7G4 Montreal Machine (4-2) at Winnipeg Swarm (2-4)
Montreal is definitely the better of the two teams heading into the game. Winnipeg has shown some signs of life but have struggled to put together any consistent offensive performances. MTL DL Mitchel Jones is one to watch on the defensive side of the ball. Game Report *********************************** Winnipeg blows a chance to win the game late by taking 2 major penalties, gifting Montreal 3 points and losing as a result. This game may have sealed the fate of John Bray as the Winnipeg fan base is gutted to lose a game in that fashion…can he win over ownership to give him a second chance next year - their talent level absolutely should be yielding better results. Offensive linewoman Eula McCann picked up a fumble and rumbled for 6 zones in a rare positive moment for Winnipeg. *********************************** SCORESHEET Home Winnipeg 0 - 14 - 14 - 4 - 0 - Total: 32 Away Montreal 0 - 14 - 14 - 0 - 6 - Total: 34 ****HOME Winnipeg RUSHES**** Isiah Butler Runs: 2 Run zones: 2 run TDs: 0 Fumbles:0 Sam Hensley Runs: 1 Run zones: 0 run TDs: 0 Fumbles:0 Eula McCann Runs: 1 Run zones: 6 run TDs: 0 Fumbles:0 ****AWAY Montreal RUSHES**** Adonis Howell Runs: 2 Run zones: 4 run TDs: 0 Fumbles:0 Arhippa Heino Runs: 1 Run zones: 2 run TDs: 0 Fumbles:0 Kelvin Ogletree Runs: 1 Run zones: 2 run TDs: 1 Fumbles:0 ****HOME Winnipeg RECEPTIONS**** Phillipa Pippy Receptions: 3 Rec_Zone: 8 Rec_TDs: 0 Isiah Butler Receptions: 2 Rec_Zone: 4 Rec_TDs: 1 Sam Hensley Receptions: 1 Rec_Zone: 2 Rec_TDs: 1 ****AWAY Montreal RECEPTIONS**** Arhippa Heino Receptions: 4 Rec_Zone: 9 Rec_TDs: 1 Adonis Howell Receptions: 2 Rec_Zone: 4 Rec_TDs: 0 Kelvin Ogletree Receptions: 1 Rec_Zone: 3 Rec_TDs: 0 ****HOME Winnipeg Passing**** Kevin Frye 8/6 Zones:14 TDs:2 INT:1 Sacks:0 ****AWAY Montreal Passing**** Gao Ching 7/7 Zones:16 TDs:1 INT:0 Sacks:1 ****HOME Winnipeg DEFENSIVE**** Kalervo Vaijrvi Stops:1 Sacks: 1 FF:1 INT:0 RZ:1 ****AWAY Montreal DEFENSIVE**** Mitchel Jones Stops:1 Sacks: 0 FF:1 INT:0 RZ:1 Julian Castle Stops:1 Sacks: 0 FF:0 INT:0 RZ:0 Lee Hawkins Stops:1 Sacks: 0 FF:0 INT:1 RZ:1 |
W7G5 Regina Raiders (5-1) at Vancouver Vendetta (5-1)
Week 7 has seen matchups between some of the worst teams and some of the best teams. This matchup is the premier of the week with 2 of the hottest teams in the league face off. Elroy Dawson and Clarence Roberts are both in the top 3 of QBs on the season and both come in with very strong supporting casts. Vancouver might have a slight edge with home advantage and a defence that's been on top of its game all year, in the form of DL Wai-ho Tai and DB Noah Blood. Game Report *********************************** Both defenses play very well, but it's Regina that keeps find ways to score, with timely sacks by DL Alex Durbin regaining possession and swinging the balance in their favour. Elroy Dawson was the better of the two QBs, finding favourite target Brett Charron for the only touchdown of the game. *********************************** SCORESHEET Home Regina 5 - 5 - 14 - 0 - 5 - Total: 29 Away Vancouver 0 - 9 - 4 - 1 - Total: 14 ****HOME Regina RUSHES**** Karley Wright Runs: 3 Run zones: 4 run TDs: 0 Fumbles:0 Elroy Dawson Runs: 1 Run zones: 3 run TDs: 0 Fumbles:0 ****AWAY Vancouver RUSHES**** Jayson Privett Runs: 3 Run zones: 7 run TDs: 0 Fumbles:0 ****HOME Regina RECEPTIONS**** Brett Charron Receptions: 4 Rec_Zone: 5 Rec_TDs: 1 Karley Wright Receptions: 2 Rec_Zone: 4 Rec_TDs: 0 Maria Ploughman Receptions: 2 Rec_Zone: 7 Rec_TDs: 0 ****AWAY Vancouver RECEPTIONS**** Jayson Privett Receptions: 1 Rec_Zone: 1 Rec_TDs: 0 Zack Mayfield Receptions: 1 Rec_Zone: 4 Rec_TDs: 0 Von Sughrue Receptions: 1 Rec_Zone: 2 Rec_TDs: 0 ****HOME Regina Passing**** Elroy Dawson 8/8 Zones:16 TDs:1 INT:1 Sacks:0 ****AWAY Vancouver Passing**** Clarence Roberts 5/3 Zones:7 TDs:0 INT:0 Sacks:2 ****HOME Regina DEFENSIVE**** Josiah Rogers Stops:1 Sacks: 0 FF:0 INT:0 RZ:0 Miles Hamler Stops:1 Sacks: 0 FF:0 INT:0 RZ:0 Alex Durbin Stops:0 Sacks: 2 FF:2 INT:0 RZ:2 ****AWAY Vancouver DEFENSIVE**** Wai-ho Tao Stops:1 Sacks: 0 FF:1 INT:0 RZ:1 Alan Therkelsen Stops:1 Sacks: 0 FF:0 INT:0 RZ:0 Noah Blood Stops:0 Sacks: 0 FF:0 INT:1 RZ:0 |
W8G1 Edmonton Elk (2-5) at Regina Raiders (5-1)
Edmonton's defense keyed an upset win over Saskatoon in their last game - but they face an extremely tough test against Regina's dynamic offensive attack led by QB Elroy Dawson and WR Brett Charron. Game Report *********************************** Edmonton's defense made a valiant effort in this one - DB Tyreek Grimes was everywhere on the field - including an 8 zone interception return that kept things closer than Regina would have liked. DL Jaheim Casey made a pair of stops too. Edmonton had a great chance late but shot themselves in the foot late with penalties. Regina will be relieved to have survived a close call. *********************************** SCORESHEET Home Edmonton 14 - 1 - 0 - 1 - 1 - Total: 17 Away Regina 6 - 9 - 5 - 0 - Total: 20 ****HOME Edmonton RUSHES**** Alexandria Humphries Runs: 1 Run zones: 2 run TDs: 0 Fumbles:1 Shelly King Runs: 1 Run zones: 1 run TDs: 0 Fumbles:0 ****AWAY Regina RUSHES**** Elroy Dawson Runs: 2 Run zones: 3 run TDs: 0 Fumbles:0 Karley Wright Runs: 1 Run zones: 4 run TDs: 0 Fumbles:0 Brett Charron Runs: 1 Run zones: 3 run TDs: 0 Fumbles:0 ****HOME Edmonton RECEPTIONS**** Alexandria Humphries Receptions: 3 Rec_Zone: 3 Rec_TDs: 0 Chica Bravo Receptions: 2 Rec_Zone: 10 Rec_TDs: 1 ****AWAY Regina RECEPTIONS**** Brett Charron Receptions: 3 Rec_Zone: 9 Rec_TDs: 0 Karley Wright Receptions: 2 Rec_Zone: 6 Rec_TDs: 0 Maria Ploughman Receptions: 1 Rec_Zone: 2 Rec_TDs: 0 ****HOME Edmonton Passing**** Shelly King 6/4 Zones:12 TDs:1 INT:1 Sacks:0 ****AWAY Regina Passing**** Elroy Dawson 8/6 Zones:17 TDs:0 INT:1 Sacks:0 ****HOME Edmonton DEFENSIVE**** Jaheim Casey Stops:2 Sacks: 0 FF:0 INT:0 RZ:0 Tyreek Grimes Stops:1 Sacks: 0 FF:0 INT:1 RZ:8 ****AWAY Regina DEFENSIVE**** Miles Hamler Stops:2 Sacks: 0 FF:0 INT:1 RZ:5 Kirk Schaffer Stops:0 Sacks: 0 FF:1 INT:0 RZ:0 |
W8G2 Saskatoon Storm (3-4) at Calgary Gunslingers (1-6)
Saskatoon's performances on the year have been pretty uneven - but they're offence has been a bright spot as they sit in the top half of the league. The defence has struggled though. Calgary will be hoping that their passing attack will be enough to get them in the win column. Game Report CGY DL Bert Farrall puts on a show on defense but it's nowhere near enough as Saskatoon makes enough plays on offense for a comfortable win. SSK LB Judah Roberts forced two turnovers and CGY's Tony Klassen suffers a complete collapse of confidence that will absolutely be concerning for CGY as they start thinking ahead to next year.... *********************************** SCORESHEET Home Calgary 7 - 2 - 2 - 0 - 0 - 1 - 4 - Total: 16 Away Saskatoon 0 - 0 - 14 - 14 - 0 - 4 - Total: 32 ****HOME Calgary RUSHES**** Jaslene Birch Runs: 4 Run zones: 3 run TDs: 0 Fumbles:0 Tony Klassen Runs: 4 Run zones: 5 run TDs: 0 Fumbles:1 Paul Williams Runs: 1 Run zones: 3 run TDs: 0 Fumbles:0 ****AWAY Saskatoon RUSHES**** Malachi Wilson Runs: 5 Run zones: 8 run TDs: 0 Fumbles:0 Jaiden Nash Runs: 2 Run zones: 4 run TDs: 1 Fumbles:0 ****HOME Calgary RECEPTIONS**** Paul Williams Receptions: 1 Rec_Zone: 4 Rec_TDs: 0 ****AWAY Saskatoon RECEPTIONS**** Malachi Wilson Receptions: 2 Rec_Zone: 11 Rec_TDs: 1 ****HOME Calgary Passing**** Tony Klassen 5/1 Zones:4 TDs:0 INT:0 Sacks:1 ****AWAY Saskatoon Passing**** Dylan Henderson 2/2 Zones:11 TDs:1 INT:0 Sacks:1 ****HOME Calgary DEFENSIVE**** Bertrand Farrall Stops:2 Sacks: 1 FF:2 INT:0 RZ:1 Otis Palmer Stops:1 Sacks: 0 FF:0 INT:0 RZ:0 Ahilocana Maddukuri Stops:1 Sacks: 0 FF:0 INT:0 RZ:0 ****AWAY Saskatoon DEFENSIVE**** Judah Roberts Stops:3 Sacks: 0 FF:2 INT:0 RZ:3 Michael Tessier Stops:1 Sacks: 0 FF:0 INT:0 RZ:0 Kouya Yamada Stops:1 Sacks: 1 FF:1 INT:0 RZ:1 |

"This is the most consequential game of the season in terms of play-offs. If Ottawa wins, they will be East division champs by virtue of a head to head win vs MTL, as well as by point differential. If they lose, they compete for wild card spot with Saskatoon - but they lost big in their head to head.
If Ottawa wins, they enter the playoffs as the top seed. If they lose, they are out. Ottawa wins by a narrow margin - but winning is all that matters. Ottawa will be concerned at the weak performances of late from previously world destroying Ronnie MacDonald." CGL Off Season Report - Western Division
Vancouver Vendetta Coach Jeff Kitchen will return as Vancouver made the playoffs and seemed to have a lot of positives to build off of - but their off-season was pretty disastrous as QB Clarence Roberts and WR Zack Mayfield both regress. Their first draft pick is LB Chae Daoust (2-2-1). WR Zack Mayfield was released to make way for WR Tommie Kingston (2-2-1). OL Caspar Jacoby (1-2-2) rounded out their draft. Vancouver will definitely feel like they lost more than they gained this off-season... Edmonton Elk Edmonton’s 3-7 campaign was very disappointing but HC Cynthia Fox will keep her job heading into next season. Infighting within the front office may hamper her efforts to turn the team around next season. It also appeared to hinder their off-season as QB Shelly King and top WR John Bier regressed. On the positive side, OL Marketta Porthen and Tammy Allen both improved. Edmonton released Shelly King to take QB Zaire Willis (2-1-1) with their first pick, along with WR Fatuci Bazhunaishvili (3-0-0) with their second. UDFA Olive McTavish (2-0-0) definitely helps Edmonton improve their passing game over last year. Calgary Gunslingers Calgary was league worst in both offence and defence despite being a team thought to be talented. Coach Kenyon Fox is out as a result and Jonathon Jesse is in. Both coaches loved to pass the ball, but coach JJ is more conservative in his play calling. Calgary's offense saw improvement almost across the board, so their draft focus was almost 100% on shoring up their defence. LB Dixie West (1-3-2) and DL Jalen Gamble (2-2-0) were added and free agent DB Kirk Schaeffer (2-0-2) joined a much improved defensive side. |
CGL Off Season Report - Easter Division
Toronto Blizzard (PF -1) Blake Kelly sticks around after a 5-5 season but questions swirl about his long term commitment to the club. The offence sees exciting development in pass skill across the board but the defence is hampered by the shock free agent defections of star DL Aaron Jarret and DB Alice Hibbs. They try to make it up through the draft, selecting: DL Quincy Holland (2-2-2) selected 1 -4 DB Todd Dukeshire (2-1-2) r2p4 OL Erik Houseworth (1-2-2) r3p4 Ottawa Aces (PF +1) John Gantt is awarded for his team’s dominant display with a contract extension and more organizational control heading into next season. 10 year veteran Ronnie MacDonald has definitely lost a step in the run game and DL Ira McGinn departs for FA. But RB Avis Short looks ready to up her game and fill in for MacDonald. Draft and FA: DL Barney Whiteway (2-2-0) 1-10 LB Michelle Krak (0-3-0) r2p10 LB Jeanette Scott (0-2-1) r3p10 DL Ottheinrich Bucher released – DL Derrick Myrick FA signing (2-1-1) |
Montreal Machine (NC)
Montreal liked what they saw out of the team last year. Sloan Normore will get another chance to try to pilot his defence to the top of the league. He’ll have an extremely tough year as his veteran team loses 5 players to retirement! They will pivot to a run heavy offence with three rookies in their backfield as a result. The defence is patched back together with a number of big name signings, including DB Alice Hibbs. HB Arhippa Heino – Free Agent WR Kelvin Ogletree – Retires QB Gao Ching – Retires LB Nick Barnes – Retires DB Arlen McGinnis Retires DL Julian Castle - retires HB Jeremy Foland (2-2-2) drafted 1-8 HB Louie Pick (2-1-1) r2p8 QB Loraine Boyd (0-1-2) r3p8 Sign FA DB Alice Hibbs (3-2-0) Sign FA DB Ira McGinn (0-2-0) Sign FA LB Abel Alger (0-2-0) Sign UDFA OL Kelsey Vickers (0-2-2) Release WR Adonis Howell – sign FA Chica Bravo (1-0-2) Halifax Schooners (PF-1) Rick Kimball sticks around for another season but rumours of locker room disunity could lead to another challenging campaign. Their offseason is further complicated by regression on an offence that already struggled. They pick up a definite upgrade in QB Mark Harry - but this team is still at least a draft away from being competitive. Remains to be seen if Rick Kimball will be part of that future... QB Musette Desaulniers released QB Mark Harry (2-1-2) picked rd 1 pick 2 OL Scot Frey (1-2-3) r2p2 OL Bradley Twyman (1-2-2) r3p2 |

Saskatoon Storm (NC) Solid campaign for Saskatoon saw them just miss the last wildcard spot. They hoped a year of development would make them a stronger team but a number of key skilled players on offence regress, while the line gets stronger. LB Josiah Rogers retires DB Kirk Schaffer free agent DL Jim Wells retires DL Quadir McNary (2-1-2) 1-9 DB Stephon Smith (2-1-0) r2p9 LB Jabari Charles (2-0-1) r3p9 Release WR Maria Ploughman – UDFA Joey Heaton (2-1-0) Release LB Richard Rockwell – UDFA John Adkins (1-1-1) Winnipeg Swarm (NC) WPG’s late surge saved coach John Bray’s job but another poor performance could find him looking for another line of work. Offence shows regression - but the big "get" is star DL Aaron Jarret who comes over from Toronto. One controversial cut is Sam Hensley who loses a step slightly and is unceremoniously cut and replaced by pass catching rookie RB Colleen Ramsey. HB Sam Hensley -1R WR Isiah Butler -1 P OL Eula McCann -1P OL Eddie Suozzi – Free Agent Sign DL Aaron Jarret (3-1-2) OL Frederick Benoit (3-2-1) 1-5 OL Jamie Hunnicutt (2-2-1) r2p5 HB Sam Hensley released – Colleen Ramsey (2-2-0) r3p5 |

W1G1 Winnipeg at Vancouver
Two teams possibly heading in different directions. WPG head coach John Bray has added a lot of passing talent to his offence and shifts to a pass heavy approach more in line with what got him the job in the first place. The off-season wasn’t kind to Vancouver and may have blunted their offensive prowess quite a bit. VAN HB Jason Privett will be seeing WPG Michael Campbell in his nightmares for weeks to come as he was held to 1 zone gained on 7 attempts! WPG wins convincingly in the opener (thanks in large part to me correcting bugs that allow completed passes to count….*facepalm*) *********************************** SCORESHEET Home Vancouver 5 - 0 - 2 - 1 - 14 - 0 - Total: 22 Away Winnipeg 1 - 14 - 5 - 0 - 14 - Total: 34 ****HOME Vancouver RUSHES**** Jayson Privett Runs: 7 Run zones: 1 run TDs: 1 Fumbles:0 Tommie Kingston Runs: 3 Run zones: 6 run TDs: 0 Fumbles:0 Clarence Roberts Runs: 1 Run zones: 6 run TDs: 0 Fumbles:0 ****AWAY Winnipeg RUSHES**** Isiah Butler Runs: 1 Run zones: 6 run TDs: 1 Fumbles:0 ****HOME Vancouver RECEPTIONS**** Jayson Privett Receptions: 2 Rec_Zone: 3 Rec_TDs: 0 ****AWAY Winnipeg RECEPTIONS**** Colleen Ramsey Receptions: 3 Rec_Zone: 7 Rec_TDs: 0 Isiah Butler Receptions: 3 Rec_Zone: 7 Rec_TDs: 1 ****HOME Vancouver Passing**** Clarence Roberts 2/2 Zones:3 TDs:0 INT:0 Sacks:0 ****AWAY Winnipeg Passing**** Kevin Frye 7/6 Zones:14 TDs:1 INT:0 Sacks:0 ****HOME Vancouver DEFENSIVE**** Sid York Stops:2 Sacks: 0 FF:0 INT:0 RZ:0 Chae Daoust Stops:1 Sacks: 0 FF:0 INT:0 RZ:0 ****AWAY Winnipeg DEFENSIVE**** Michael Campbell Stops:3 Sacks: 0 FF:1 INT:0 RZ:5 Bob Hall Stops:1 Sacks: 0 FF:0 INT:0 RZ:0 |
W1G2 Montreal at Edmonton
Montreal brings a heavily re-tooled team into Edmonton. They’ll be counting on their upgraded running game to “hide” the weak arm of their new QB Loraine Boyd. Edmonton’s all-female offensive line got stronger in the off-season, with Markhetta Porthen being among the best in the league. They’ll hope that their switch to a pass heavy offence lights a spark for them. Rookie HB Jeremy Foland romps for 15 zones on 8 carries and FA DB acquisition Alice Hibbs adds a pair of pass stops to lead Montreal to a convincing first win. *********************************** SCORESHEET Home Edmonton 0 - 1 - 14 - 5 - 5 - Total: 25 Away Montreal 14 - 5 - 14 - Total: 33 ****HOME Edmonton RUSHES**** Zaire Willis Runs: 1 Run zones: 1 run TDs: 0 Fumbles:0 ****AWAY Montreal RUSHES**** Jeremy Foland Runs: 8 Run zones: 15 run TDs: 0 Fumbles:0 Louie Pick Runs: 2 Run zones: 2 run TDs: 1 Fumbles:0 ****HOME Edmonton RECEPTIONS**** Alexandria Humphries Receptions: 3 Rec_Zone: 4 Rec_TDs: 1 Fatuci Bazhunaishvili Receptions: 2 Rec_Zone: 10 Rec_TDs: 0 ****AWAY Montreal RECEPTIONS**** Chica Bravo Receptions: 2 Rec_Zone: 9 Rec_TDs: 0 Louie Pick Receptions: 1 Rec_Zone: 0 Rec_TDs: 1 ****HOME Edmonton Passing**** Zaire Willis 7/5 Zones:14 TDs:1 INT:0 Sacks:0 ****AWAY Montreal Passing**** Lorraine Boyd 3/3 Zones:9 TDs:1 INT:0 Sacks:0 ****HOME Edmonton DEFENSIVE**** Jamel Carter Stops:1 Sacks: 0 FF:0 INT:0 RZ:0 ****AWAY Montreal DEFENSIVE**** Alice Hibbs Stops:2 Sacks: 0 FF:0 INT:0 RZ:0 Thurman Leonhardt Stops:1 Sacks: 0 FF:0 INT:0 RZ:0 |

The defending champion Aces got quite a bit stronger on defence without losing much on offence due to a changing of the guard at lead halfback.
