Solecismic 09-17-2022 02:34 PM

It didn't look that bad when the games were scheduled, but the three non-conference opponents for Michigan are all at unusual low points for their programs. Maybe it's best that way - it's a long season for college kids, and the playoff structure penalizes serious non-conference challenges.

With the Big Ten East so strong and the West so weak, the goal is only to get to Ohio State with a spot in the conference championship on the line. Get there and win the championship and you're in the playoff. Anything else, and you're not.

Hard to say if Michigan is overrated. It's a talented team and McCarthy might be a big upgrade at quarterback. They've done what a top five team should do against that competition.

I don't think I've ever seen a team have seven different quarterbacks complete passes in one game.

JPhillips 09-17-2022 02:37 PM

Man do I feel for Marcus Freeman. At least I'm very certain that somebody will scoop him up on staff pretty quickly. This ND team is a total disaster.

It's more than that. Miami people are awful. I've lived in South Florida, I hated it. UF and FSU may hate each other, but as people we share a lot of common bonds. North of Ocala is basically sweet tea/South Georgia. Miami is like the LA of the south.

19-17 Buffalo start of the 4th

bronconick 09-17-2022 02:55 PM

42 points in Purdue-Syracuse 4th quarter

tarcone 09-17-2022 02:57 PM

My lord the B1G west is the worst division in CFB.

NW loses at home to So. Ill
Purdue on the road to Syr
Nebby at home to OU

Coastal took over in the 4th, Buffalo's punter dropped the ball and Coastal ran it in for a TD, defense had a big INT, and McCall had a 59 yard TD to ice it, Coastal wins 38-26. Bring on the Sun Belt next week as they travel to Georgia State

Thomkal 09-17-2022 03:55 PM

Speaking of the Sun Belt, South Alabama ahead by 2 over UCLA in the 4th

Purdue is finding nice ways to piss away games.

Thomkal 09-17-2022 04:19 PM

Bummer, South Alabama tried to salt the game away on a 4th and 2, got sacked, and UCLA pretty much marched down the field for the GW FG with 2 seconds left

JPhillips 09-17-2022 04:22 PM

Chris Collinsworth's kid is keeping a better announcer out of a job. He sounds like a college student broadcasting over the internet.

Edward64 09-17-2022 04:53 PM

Cal vs ND is fun, 17-24

Cal is driving to tie it with 37 sec left.

EDIT: failed Hail Mary. Cal had a couple bounces/chances to pull it in though

RainMaker 09-17-2022 05:12 PM

Like 50 games today and maybe 1-2 are remotely competitive.

bob 09-17-2022 05:29 PM

The score differential in the last 15 quarters of FBS football for GT is now 182-10.

I'm quite of the opinion that power 5 conference teams (assuming that's still a thing) should only play other power 5 teams.

Ksyrup 09-17-2022 05:47 PM

What the hell just happened with Troy/App State? What an awful decision. Worked out well!

Trying to think of the last time I saw a hailmary come up that short and still work.

Ksyrup 09-17-2022 06:01 PM

The WR who immediately started blocking was the MVP of that play.

Ksyrup 09-17-2022 06:01 PM

BTW, the awful decision was Troy taking the safety, not the Hail Mary.

Edward64 09-17-2022 06:40 PM

Petrino is making us look bad right now. Down 0-7 and we just lost the ball at the 2 yard line.

Edward64 09-17-2022 07:07 PM

Upset watch. We are down 17-0.

Edward64 09-17-2022 08:06 PM

Hogs are down 17-14 now in early 3Q.

We don't deserve #10 even if we come back to win it. Got too big for our heads.

Ksyrup 09-17-2022 08:17 PM

Well, Michigan State right behind you is laying a huge egg.

tarcone 09-17-2022 08:18 PM

Aw, stop. Arkansas is a good team and I am jealous.

Iowa leads a terrible Nevada team 17-0 at half. It should be much worse, but alas, Iowa has very little offense.

But we have a real athletic freshman RB whos looks exciting.

True, but I don't think you prepare for winning games like that by playing games like this. Some patsies, sure. And yeah they probably weren't supposed to be this bad originally, but I think there's a lot to be said for having one decent non-conference opponent from a major conference. Just one. Not a row of them, but somebody that when you push, they don't fall over; they push back. Most of the time, if an early close loss takes you out of the playoff, you didn't deserve to be in the playoff to start off with.

I think there might .... might ... be two quality teams in the Big Ten this year. It's looking highly unlikely there are more than that.

We just talked about this. I think there's a solid chance Michigan is overrated, though the 'as always' bit is hilarious. Any given game, you never know, but there's a huge gulf between them being overrated, and them being overrated enough to make Iowa favorites against them.

The Harbaugh years have been overrated.

Iowa is the burr in Michigans saddle. We have the exact type of defense that always screws Michigan. It is a weird dynamic, but Iowa is UMs underrated nightmare.

SDIT: With the exception of the ass kicking we took last year in the Champ game

EDIT EDIT: I didnt say Iowa would be favored

tarcone 09-17-2022 08:53 PM

Thank you PSU

I will take any little win against the SEC

Ksyrup 09-17-2022 08:54 PM

Arkansas probably gonna pull this out, but even so, it has given me a chance to explain the whole Petrino thing to my 18 year old daughter who did this half hard laugh, half jaw drop when I finished the story with a picture of Petrino at the press conference.

RainMaker 09-17-2022 08:59 PM

Arkansas finally realizing they are playing Missouri State.

RainMaker 09-17-2022 09:01 PM

I don't get the fascination with the Florida QB Richardson. He looks so bad.

Ksyrup 09-17-2022 09:02 PM

Highlight from a blowout:

Edward64 09-17-2022 09:07 PM

Frakking Odom. I hate his defensive schemes.

Ksyrup 09-17-2022 09:20 PM

All of a sudden, UF is down to USF. No points in the 2nd half, 11 minutes left.

tarcone 09-17-2022 09:21 PM

Barry Odom is a hell of a DC. Shitty HC though

Ksyrup 09-17-2022 09:26 PM

Goal line INT for USF, shit gettin' real.

JonInMiddleGA 09-17-2022 09:55 PM

Wow at the USF meltdown

Ksyrup 09-17-2022 09:56 PM

Well, UF escapes thanks to a botched snap and then a dropped hold on the attempted trying FG.

Edward64 09-17-2022 10:09 PM

We got lucky tonight. I won't complain if we dropped 2-3 spots. We did come back twice when we were behind double digits. There's been years when we would have folded.

A&M is doing decently with their QB change. Hogs have them next and hope we are better prepared.

tarcone 09-17-2022 10:12 PM

Sometimes its better to be lucky than good

bronconick 09-17-2022 10:33 PM

So, down 14, Cristobal runs three run plays and sends the field goal unit out there

They wanted Cristobal, they got Cristobal’s super-conservative cavemanball

By who, exactly? The story for most of Harbaugh's time at Michigan, right up until last year, has been 'Harbaugh isn't cutting it, how long till they get rid of him'? I'm not a Harbaugh fan by the way, but I don't see how they've been over-rated in his time there.

Michigan and Iowa haven't played much in recent years, and the whole 'right kind of defense' thing doesn't make a whole lot of sense given how much Michigan has changed their offense in that time period. 2016 is basically the only game at all that matches up to that narrative. And that's their only win (in just three meetings) in the Harbaugh Era.

In 2013 they lost six of their last eight and had trouble scoring against lots of people, lost to Nebraska, needing lots of overtimes to beat Northwestern, etc. Go back further than that and you're a decade back, much different approach, and you have typically struggling Michigan teams not doing well against Iowa and also doing well in general. It's just as often been the defense that is the issue than a problem with scoring points, particularly if you're looking at the three Iowa wins from 09-11.

I can only say that it ain't going over great here in the batcave in Athens, GA.

We wondered if they might try an 80 yard field goal with 4 mins left to try to cut the lead to five.

JonInMiddleGA 09-17-2022 11:26 PM

And am I the only person who thinks Van Dyk looks to be around 35 years old?

Edward64 09-17-2022 11:30 PM

Good win by A&M tonight.

Edward64 09-18-2022 07:33 AM

ESPN article recapping the Hogs close escape. The below caught my eye, not sure how real it is.

I have fond memories of Petrino and his success at Arkansas so would love to give him (yet) another shot at a major program. But I'm not sure Louisville is the best place for him.

College football Week 3 highlights - Top plays, games and takeaways
Quote:

Arkansas is now 3-0 for a second season in a row and has critical SEC West games against Texas A&M and Alabama upcoming. Petrino, meanwhile, will likely be hired back at Louisville by 2025.

Lathum 09-18-2022 08:14 AM

UW looked great last night. Came out and punched MSU from the start. Let up a little in the 4th quarter but I can't complain at all. DeBoer has brought a great change in culture and Penix is the real deal. We have always had talent, it is all coming together now.

I've gotten a hunch that he might be about as popular with them as Jim Donnan was.
