In like Flynn.

Grover 07-16-2012 07:51 PM

Some thoughts:

If you drop Label, you need to drop a corresponding sub-category.

Replace Country with Metal outright.

I like the change of Hip Hop to umbrella underneath blues, jazz, r&b, soul, funk, etc.

I'd like to have a category for 1960s and also 1950s and earlier...

However that would mean needing to somehow add a category. Keep 'other' and add rhythm guitarist as one in itself?

pm's sent

i had similar thoughts. i like the flexibility of country or metal though. we'll wait until others weigh in

Grover 07-16-2012 08:13 PM

I am sure that Crimmy will have plenty to say :)

britrock88 07-16-2012 08:16 PM

Country/Metal is a funny pairing. But I like that it covers ground where there might be mutually exclusive listeners.

Also, in.

i know. but i had to balance the racism of lumping all the traditionally black genres into one category.

CrimsonFox 07-16-2012 08:39 PM

Let's discuss this a little as there were lots of things people were bouncing around both in and out of thread and PMs, k?

All music looks alike to you, doesn't it...

NTO's PROPOSED CHANGES
***********************
Drop Label
Change Hip Hop to Hip Hop/R&B/Soul/Funk/Jazz
Change Country to Country/Metal
Change Other to Other/Rythym Guitar
Female MAY NOT be used as a Cover Song

this was very much in line with or at least close to what I was thinking. Drop Label definitely. Only so many of those. I think dropping producer is also a good idea because who cares once you've picked all the murderers and burned the hiphop category there. :)

Harmony/Backup singing was tossed about and I now realize how we could do it very well so instead of having it be one of the instruments in the top category, we could have it in the BOTTOM section.
So then we will be linking up say:
Bassguitar/harmony, rhythm & other/harmony, keys/harmony etc, which there are tons of... as most harmony singers play another instrument too.

CrimsonFox 07-16-2012 08:56 PM

lumping all the subgenres together I kinda like for sure even if they have nothing to do with each other. We could even make it complete with:

R&B/funk/country/jazz/metal/blues and all rock forms thereof

CrimsonFox 07-16-2012 08:57 PM

yeah female as a cover song was kinda creative but also somewhat of a reach/copout since this is a cover song for your band.

Why bother having separate genre categories at that point?

right. if we drop label i propose hip hop/country/metal as a sub category. not everyone likes those genres so it gives you some latitude.

NorvTurnerOverdrive 07-16-2012 09:08 PM

maybe 'POP' needs to go away as pre-1980 it gets really fuzzy

I would not argue with that since pop seemed to be used as "let's pick who I want and call it pop".

YOu have somewhat of a point. I guess I was saying..."okay....anything you want :)"

NorvTurnerOverdrive 07-16-2012 09:35 PM

we'll wait for some more voices. i'm all ears if anyone has any concise ideas.

CrimsonFox 07-16-2012 09:38 PM

A Possibility:

Lead Singer
Lead Guitarist
Bass Guitarist
Keys
Drummer
Rhythm Guitar
Other Instrument
Songwriter
Cover Song

The sub-categories that could be used as "sources" for the band members were:
Rock
R&B/Country/Metal
Harmony/Backing Vocals
Female
21st century
1990s
1980s
1970s
1960s & Earlier

I'm actually sold on needing to keep female as a category.

CrimsonFox 07-16-2012 09:39 PM

Really it doesn't really need to say hiphop at all if people are going to say R&B is hhiphop anyway. And I lump soul and funk into R&B too and save space.

CrimsonFox 07-16-2012 09:39 PM

But good discussion guys!

Still like the idea of a blues/jazz/soul/r&b/hip hop combination over sticking R&B with Country/Metal

Julio Riddols 07-16-2012 10:54 PM

I'm in.. Will weigh in with genre/time period ideas later.

This should have read I'm NOT sold on keeping female...

WEe COULD lose it.

cartman 07-16-2012 11:29 PM

I'll have to give my spot up to someone else. I'm heading to Costa Rica for 10 days starting on Friday.

I would draft a female regardless, but people should be forced to if they would not otherwise.

NorvTurnerOverdrive 07-17-2012 08:46 AM

couple thoughts

1. i don't wanna get too far away from the original recipe
2. i like the challenge of the difficult categories. requires thought, strategy and forces people to get out of their comfort zones.
3. i think the elimination of POP/LABEL makes the most sense. if we expand the hip hop and country categories along with the existing decades you should have no problem taking a 'POP' artist

We are in agreement. I don't want to stray too far from Chief's original build too much either.

Chief Rum 07-17-2012 10:49 AM

This may not be a good idea, since I am very busy at work and I will likely be out of town next Monday, but I would like to participate, see how I can do.

I have a feeling I will be embarrassed by you musical cogniscentis, but I'll give it a game effort.

NorvTurnerOverdrive 07-17-2012 11:05 AM

game effort would be a great band name. welcome aboard

NorvTurnerOverdrive 07-17-2012 01:42 PM

bump. 4 slots open. don't spend your life wonderin what could have been.

Suicane75 07-17-2012 01:52 PM

I'm down. I'm in.

NorvTurnerOverdrive 07-17-2012 01:56 PM

suicane wants to party like it's 1999

3 slots left

Grover 07-17-2012 03:39 PM

I hope Karl, Abe and Larry get in on this. I'd like to see the majority of the first ten return to pick their opening acts.

NorvTurnerOverdrive 07-17-2012 06:44 PM

what's your favorite hammer song? mine's pumps and a bump

i suppose we could roll with just 8 or 9. but that would require at least one more participant.

NorvTurnerOverdrive 07-18-2012 05:12 AM

i'm gonna give it till noon est and then we're going to go to war with the army we've got. realistically 7 or 8 members was probably as good as we could do given the nature of the draft.

on the rule change front lest anyone objects we're going with:

drop: POP/LABEL
HIP HOP becomes HIP HOP/JAZZ/R&B
COUNTRY becomes COUNTRY/METAL

so 7 owners, 9 slots, 63 total picks... we should hum right along. i'm looking forward to it.

pm's and draft thread will go up around noonish.
