Winter Olympics Thread-2018
Sorry if we have a thread on this already. Some sports start tonight, including the ever popular Curling event. The Olympics Channel or whatever NBCSN is calling itself these days has the telecast. I think there is some skiing too. Can we try to keep this thread politics free please? Try to avoid spoilers too! Can be hard with the time difference I know
Good luck to the athletes from whatever country you live in! |

Just to clarify, the NBCSN and the Olympic Channel are two different channels. I'm not sure all cable companies have the Olympic channel. We didn't have it on DirecTV but do on FIOS. |
Quote:
Thanks Henry I thought they had changed the name to the Olympics Channel |
In regards to spoilers, NBC said they are doing away with tape delayed broadcasts for this Olympics.

I'll just shut up now :)

love johnny weirs hair!

Poor Nathan Chen.
|
Lots of curling going on.
Its, surprisingly, entertaining (for now at least). |

poor men's figure skating. None of the favorites skated well until the man from Japan. Hope its just Olympic nerves and not a sign to come. |
US mixed doubles curling pair looking like a hot mess. They've lost all confidence and are playing like it.
It's like having 2 John Shusters out there. |

At least it’s only the team event and they’ll get another shot later. |

You try getting 6 ended and keeping your composure. |

No wonder I was so damn thirsty all night.

I'll confess. I walked in and it was on the screen when they lit up the symbol in the arena for the opening ceremonies and my first thought was Pepsi, then I remembered that it's in Korea. I also have to say, good lord there are some hot female athletes in these games. |
Young, single and an athlete at the Olympic village is a pretty good way to go through life.
|
Watching replay of the opening ceremony now. The drones to snowboarder to rings were pretty cool.
|
The LED drones were amazing.
|
Double screening today as the speed skating and shorttrack finals were planned together to the minute. Weird with the skating halls being next to each other.
Een, twee, drie. |

They aren't very good. And they look more like lumberjacks than curlers. |
Quote:
And they're ok. They sleep all night and work all day. |
They are up 6-3 on Norway now so maybe they'll win a match. I think the Olympics should get rid of mixed curling next time. I don't like the rule changes.
|
Can’t say Ive ever been a big ice skating fan, but that Italian pair was ridiculous.

Agreed. |
The stamina of these guys doing the 30k Skiathalon is ridiculous.
|
The Olympic tv coverage is horrible.

Other nations have sporting events. America has soap operas. |

XFinity, which I will bash at any opportunity, has been great. You can essentially watch everything live on TV through their Olympic App. And if by chance you can't find something, the NBCS website has it. I was watching the speed skating and the USA/Finland hockey game live last night at 3am and it was great. |

Don’t watc NBC coverage. Download the NBC Sports app and watch whichever event you want, when you want. |
Quote:
But I want to watch it on my television while I use my laptop for other things. I liked previous olympics when there would be about 6 different channels that you could choose from to watch whatever you wanted. |
Quote:
Do you have comcast? |
Quote:
Verizon. I see there are some on demand channels setup but nothing for hockey. |
The standard NBC TV coverage is laughably bad. Showing stuff live has actually almost made it worse, because now they cut interchangeably between live stuff and stuff that happened earlier (or even a day earlier) and don't seem to have any rhyme or reason or context to what's happening. They had live ice dancing on one station yesterday and then the recording of what happened earlier in the day on the other - what on earth is the point in that? I swear I watched the same routine three times at some point in the day.

Just follow Leslie Jones on twitter for the best Olympics coverage.

Do you have a Fire stick? Roku? Apple TV? I imagine the app is available on all of those. |

What is this new fangled wizardry you speak of... Oh, and Get Off My Lawn... :) |
I'm pretty sure I'm going to have nightmares of shrill Norwegian, Chinese and Russian women screaming "hard, hard, HAAAARD" for weeks.
And yes, there's an obvious joke in there somewhere. |

Yet I've seen women -- non sports fans mind you -- in my FB feed discussing who wore what, whose hand was where (apparently there was some controversy?), and so forth. You're watching like a sports fan ... but that's not the audience for this. |
Refereeing in the Canada/Finland womens Hockey game has been awful. They missed a clear goal which got overturned on replay. Then they missed a 2nd one that somehow was not overturned even though it was clearly in the net. Only thing I can think of is that the ref blew the whistle, which makes it even worse cause the puck was still loose (and in the net).

Johnny Weir so sassy, ya betta recognize. |
Also, there's apparently a Canadian womens league that has an expansion team...In China. What?

Shaun White’s clutch rating = 99
|
Its ridiculous how good he is (and the other men).
I enjoyed watching the women, but the men are a class to themselves. |
Japan is smacking around the USA Lady Curlers

Winner! |
Congratulations to the Germans from Ukraine and France
|
I did enjoy watching the pairs skating but TBH some of the music selection didn't seem quite right. I'm sure its me.
Yes, congrats to the Germans. Their short program from the previous night wasn't that great but I thought the long program was fantastic. Also congrats to the NK pair, they were really good. A little childish but I couldn't help but think, wow they looked great and well fed. Oh, they also showed the German pair waiting for the last pair to finish up. Those 2 were very emotional and I really felt for them. |
The Netherlands in disbelief, 'greatest of all-time' Sven Kramer didn't win the 10 km speed skating. Fourth attempt, presumably last chance, 1 silver medal in 2014 but nothing else to show for. It's weird, because he just won his three gold in a row at the 5 km. But here, majority of fans and media wanted two things: Kramer to win the 10 km and any Dutchman to win the men's 1500 meters.

Yes the Germans certainly deserved the gold for that performance. Nice to see her finally get it after 5 Olympics. Music has gone through a transition of late in skating. Non-vocals music was the only thing allowed until just a few years ago. You could pretty much predict what music was going to be used every year. Swan Lake anyone? So even though Swan Lake got used again, it allowed for that fantastic choice by the french pair who skated to the Disturbed version of Sounds of Silence. It got them noticed on YouTube, and has brought a younger audience to the sport I think. It was really disappointing to see only one American pair team make the Olympics this year, and finish mid-pack. That part of the sport needs a lot of new blood if we are ever going to get a medal there again. (Yes, I like watching ice skating :) ) |
The women's USA Curling team is really struggling. That's about the enxtent of my coverage watching this year.
