FOF 6.4 Kansas City Chiefs Dynasty

Time for a new career.

STARTUP
  • Started a couple of games with default rosters, determined that KC looks like a good challenge, so starting with them.
SETTINGS
  • Injuries=100. I want to move rather quickly.
  • Cap Range: 0 to 99. What the heck? Randomness ftw!
HOUSE RULES
  • I am allowed to use only 75% of the salary cap. Best way I've found to increase the challenge in SP without having to do a bunch of other stuff.
  • Draftees must be signed to the 2nd/4th (most expensive/shortest) option. A little added difficulty, plus it helps move things along.
  • After the 1st round is over, no drafting a WR before his adjusted rating slot. I've found it just too easy to load up on very solid 55/55 type backup WRs in the later rounds. I can draft one nearly every other year. With this "reach rule," the AI at least has a shot at these guys before I get to take them.
  • No trading FOR any future first round draft picks. I'm allowed to trade my own 1st round picks away if I so choose, and I may pick up lesser future picks, but no acquiring future lottery tickets.
  • Any FA rated 45 future or better must receive a flat contract with a bonus per year of at least 75% of the amount of the Top 20 Average for that position. I didn't just pull this number out of my arse. It's derived from multiple MP leagues and I'm thinking it'll work very well for the purpose of forcing me to pay real money to guys I'm planning to use as a starter or strong backup.
I changed the last rule to...

NEW RULE FOR FAs: Any contract offered to a FA rated 45 future or better must have an average amount per year of the following percentages of the effective salary cap.

QB 4.8%
RB 3.4%
FB 1.3%
TE 1.8%
WR 4.1%
OT 3.9%
OG 2.5%
C 2.2%
P 0.8%
K 1.3%
DE 2.8%
DT 2.8%
OLB 3.2%
ILB 2.7%
CB 4.2%
S 2.7%

I'll dig into this more later tonight, but at first glance, Cassel's big contract alone will create an early challenge.

For season one, given the preseason start, I just basically do a couple of extensions and sim through the season pretty quickly. We went 9-7 and won a very weak division. I'm thinking that may not be good for building, but it's a pleasant surprise:

Nothing particularly exciting. Indy blows us out in the WC round and we're done. Berry wins DROY (both Solecismic and DogBytes):

SS Eric Berry Kansas City 100 tkl, 2 INT (23 yds, 1 TD), 3 ff, 48 caught, 19 def, 1 hurries ( 944.989 )

Beyond that, we get a couple of 2nd-Team All Pros, but nothing worth taking the time to document here. On to 2011.

Ben E Lou 12-08-2010 08:03 PM

I'm going to try to avoid going into too great detail in the offseason. I'll hit the key signings, cuts, and extensions, but probably won't mention the name of the 51/51 G I sign.

We head into our first offseason weak at QB, set at RB/FB, in need at TE, fairly solid at WR, decent at OL, set at DL and DB, and lacking at LB.

The FA class has nothing at QB, so Cassel and his big contract remain with us. Also, I can see the FA contract rule already shaping my contract decisions. Specifically, it's encouraging me to extend guys rather than my normal SP strategy of letting guys walk into FA and replacing them very cheaply. I suspect that eventually we'll get squeezed by the cap and be forced to start drafting for positional need.

For now, I give big extensions to RB Charles and CB Flowers and can only really afford one key FA signing: TE Zach Miller (54/54) inks a 2-year deal with us.

I'll draft in the morning.

Ben E Lou 12-09-2010 02:48 AM

I really like the #2 QB in this draft class. I'm not sure what the AI would think of a guy like him, but I feel like once the #1 guy goes, I need to consider trading up to get my guy.

Ben E Lou 12-09-2010 03:25 AM

Ugh. I accidentally finished my nearly-finished draft post. Some detail prior to the 5th round pick may be lot in this redo.

1(5): QB Timothy Banks (20/58)--Looks like he could be solid in everything except scrambling, also a 94 personality with an affinity. I'll build the other two position groups around him as well. 96 position drill with very low accuracy leads me to believe his low bars are masked.
3(19): SILB-->SLB Raymond Booker (14/34)--Strong combines, low bars. With our weak linebacking corps, he should get to play soon.
4(24): C Dave Germain (15/55)--Need pick. I'm not terribly high on him, but I don't have a center under contract. He may start.
5(23): SLB-->WLB Sammy Thomas (13/48)--A bit of a one-trick pass-rushing pony, but we're weak at LB, so probably worth this pick.
6(22): K Lance Turner (49/52)--Great combines, we have a weak kicker, and no one that I'm allowed to pick stood out. (Sure enough, there's a WR who was #220 begging to be picked. If the AI whiffs, I will get him in FA2. *sigh*)
7(21): RB Lincoln Dusek (16/32)--Needed some depth. Fastest RB left.

Heh. I am at the same time happy (to see a tangible example of a house rule doing what it is intended to do) and disappointed ('cause I wanted him) to report that WR Donnell Linquist went to Oakland at pick #214.

Ben E Lou 12-09-2010 11:03 AM

Banks was +4/-3 in camp. Not sure what to make of that. Also C Germain was +4/-5. Otherwise ther'es nothing surprising to report.

Ben E Lou 12-09-2010 11:20 AM

I went ahead and threw this league into a db. I won't be updating bars terribly often, but I want to be able to see my stats reports:

This is pretty much spot-on, except I'm starting the season off with the rook at QB instead of Cassel.

JG's power ratings have us around #20 or so, while mine have us at #9. Hard to predict, really, with the rookie QB. I'm going to test that strong arm of his, that's for sure.

Ben E Lou 12-09-2010 12:56 PM

Banks throws a pick on the first pass of his professional career. Awesome.

Kansas City: Pro formation, strength is right. The defense is in a 34 with nickel personnel and 3-deep zone coverage, keying aggressively on the pass.
2-11-KCY11 (1Q: 08:28) Timothy Banks pass was intended for WR Dwayne Bowe and was intercepted by CB Sedrick Hookfin at the KCY17. Tackled by Dwayne Bowe. The quarterback threw away from the double coverage.

Ben E Lou 12-09-2010 12:59 PM

Heh. Now THIS is what a call a goal-line stand!

San Diego: Pro formation, strength is right. The defense is in a 34 with goal-line personnel and strong-side man, otherwise cover-7 zone coverage, keying aggressively on the run.
1-1-KCY01 (1Q: 06:30) Ryan Mathews ran inside the right guard for -1 yards. Tackled by DE Glenn Dorsey.
San Diego: I formation, strength is right. The defense is in a 34 with goal-line personnel and 2-deep man-to-man coverage, keying aggressively on the run.
2-2-KCY02 (1Q: 05:44) Philip Rivers pass fell incomplete, intended for FB Mike Tolbert. DE Tyson Jackson drove right through Nick Hardwick to hurry the quarterback. PENALTY: Kansas City was called for Defensive Holding.
San Diego: Pro formation, strength is left. The defense is in a 34 with goal-line personnel and 1-deep, bump-and-run coverage, keying aggressively on the run.
1-1-KCY01 (1Q: 05:39) Ryan Mathews ran outside the right tackle for -1 yards. Tackled by S Donald Washington.
San Diego: I formation with two tight ends, strength is right. The defense is in a 34 with goal-line personnel and 1-deep, bump-and-run coverage, keying aggressively on the run.
2-2-KCY02 (1Q: 05:14) Philip Rivers pass fell incomplete, intended for TE Antonio Gates. S Donald Washington defended the pass.
San Diego: Weak formation, strength is right. The defense is in a 34 with goal-line personnel and 2-deep bump-and-run coverage, keying aggressively on the run.
3-2-KCY02 (1Q: 05:10) Philip Rivers pass fell incomplete, intended for WR Rick Newman. DE Tyson Jackson simply tossed John St. Clair aside to reach the quarterback and hurry the throw.

Ben E Lou 12-09-2010 01:26 PM

Heh. He more than made up for the pick by throwing for 300+ yards in the opener, including this huge one to set up the winning FG.

Kansas City: Single-Back formation with trips receivers, strength is right. The defense is in a 34 with nickel personnel and 3-deep zone coverage, expecting the pass. Phillips is blitzing.
3-8-SDO36 (4Q: 00:17) Timothy Banks pass completed to WR Dwayne Bowe for 25 yards. Tackled by ILB Donald Butler.
(4Q: 00:17) Kansas City called a time out.
1-10-SDO11 (4Q: 00:04) Lance Turner attempted a 28 yard field goal and succeeded. Kansas City 30, San Diego 27
Final Score: Kansas City Chiefs 30, San Diego Chargers 27

Banks is up to 36/55 at the end of the year. At least it's something to build on.

Travis 12-09-2010 03:08 PM

Wow, no interceptions for Berry? That seems odd.

Nice to see McCluster contributing. And if that's the worst Banks does that should end up being a pretty nice career.

Ben E Lou 12-10-2010 11:51 AM

It looks to be pretty clear why we dropped off so much: turnover margin. And Banks is the #1 culprit. Check out our total offense/defense numbers. They were quite strong. We put up the kind of numbers one would normally associate with an 11-5 team, not a 5-11 one. STOP THROWING PICKS, TIMOTHY!!!

Ben E Lou 12-10-2010 01:34 PM

Heh. I completely forgot that I traded my 2013 first to trade up, not my 2012 first, so I have the 1(4) this year. Nice!

Ben E Lou 12-10-2010 03:45 PM

At the beginning of FA1, QB Cassel and WR Chambers are released.

We have several positions of need, but not much cap room--only enough to bring in one player of significance. We really could use a WR even if we draft one, so I decide to make that player of significance WR Mark Clayton (55/55). He gets a two-year deal.

All other signings are of players under 45/45.

Subby 12-10-2010 03:57 PM

Really feels to me like Jim messed around with the dev algorithm. Be interesting to follow this QB and see how he progresses.

Ben E Lou 12-10-2010 04:03 PM

No-brainer pick at 1(4) this year.

1(4): SE Earl Newhart (43/68)--Not a monster, but very solid, and we need help here. One red, 3 blue.
2(3): SLG Renaldo Davison (24/59)--We need help here, and hits guy's a near-monster with 3 reds and 1 blue.
3(5): LT Robbie Kernbach (15/62)--This was a third consecutive no-brainer pick in this draft. Top-rated guy by my weights at a position of strong need.
4(4): WLB-->SILB William Jamison (15/50)--4 blues and we're not all that great at LB. This 250-pounder will move to ILB. He goes immediately to 15/54 with that switch.
5(3): RT Damon Coffery (16/38)--Already pick one earlier, but I went into this draft with only one tackle under contract.
6(5): LDE Clay Edgar (14/41)--Modest combines except for a red 40. I don't really need a DE, but hard to pass that up this late. Could be a cheaper replacement when one of my starters wants $$$.
7(4): C Frankie Tang (22/32)--A red and two blues, and last year's 4th-round center didn't show me much. Tang will be given a chance to compete for a starting spot.

I think that is more rushing yards the Manning has ever had in his career.

2nd-round pick G Davison is +6/+8 in camp, but T Kenrback was a -11 VSOD. We got some nice gains (around +5 future each) from our 5th, 6th, and 7th round picks, too. Here are our likely lineups heading into preseason (ratings are pre-camp):

Banks is up to 54/54 with only "C" positional experience, so he'll definitely improve on his bars a bit more. Cutting down on turnovers made a big difference this year. Our total offense and total defense numbers weren't really much better.

I end the season and we have no retirements, 34 players under contract, and -$2.4M max for new player. After we franchise LT Albert, that'll be 35 and around -$10M. Yeah, we have some work to do. We still have quite a few holes, and look like we're going to be quite cap tight. Should be fun to try to figure out.

SILB Derrick Johnson gets released in favor of the younger LBs we have. That move gives us just enough free space to re-sign TE Miller as a free agent and pick up some 40/40 types to help fill some holes. But nothing exciting in FA1.

2012 AMATEUR DRAFT
We don't have a first round pick this year, but we also don't have huge needs right now. Going into the draft, we are looking suspect at C, NT, CB, and S, but if we have to go with the current starters at those positions, we can live with it. Here's who we end up drafting.

2(27): C B.J. Beeler (16/58)--two red, one blue, and a 99 personality affinity match. Could be the solution at center.
3(27): SS Roosevelt Fitzgerald (15/40)--This three-blue guy should develop nicely. I'm hoping he can start soon.
4(27): SE Billy-Joe Hansen (19/26)--He's #111, and this is pick #123, so I'm allowed to take him. One red combine (agility) and everything else except BJ is black. Could be something, and I could use one more WR.
5(27): SLB-->WLB Harold Hughes (19/50)--We could use some depth at LB, and Hughes has the high PRT and Endurance to be a nice help at WLB if nothing else.
6(27): TE Morris Patterson (21/49)--Three blue combines at a position where we could use depth.
7(27): NT Jermaine Lester (9/29)--Pretty solid dash/agi, so he gets a shot.

OH JUST AWESOME

I have decided to hold out until I receive a new contract.

As your starting wide receiver last season, I believe I had a breakout season. I believe I'm very seriously underpaid, and will not report to camp without a new contract.

I have decided to hold out until I receive a new contract.

I believe I made a huge difference rushing the passer last season. I believe I'm very seriously underpaid, and will not report to camp without a new contract.

The Clayton decision is relatively easy: he's in year 9 and requesting some pretty big money. He won't get an extension.

Gilberry is a bit more difficult, as he's relatively young and I *can* take on his salary request. However, we have two other good young DEs, so I decide to wait him out as well.

No money is left over for anything significant in FA2. On to TC...

2013 TC Stuff....

2(27): C B.J. Beeler (16/58)--two red, one blue, and a 99 personality affinity match. Could be the solution at center. +7/+0. If he can hold right there, I'll be happy.
3(27): SS Roosevelt Fitzgerald (15/40)--This three-blue guy should develop nicely. I'm hoping he can start soon. +4/+4. Nice. Should develop into a starter in a couple of years.
4(27): SE Billy-Joe Hansen (19/26)--He's #111, and this is pick #123, so I'm allowed to take him. One red combine (agility) and everything else except BJ is black. Could be something, and I could use one more WR. +4/+5. Could end up being a solid WR3/WR4 type, but probably not a starter.
5(27): SLB-->WLB Harold Hughes (19/50)--We could use some depth at LB, and Hughes has the high PRT and Endurance to be a nice help at WLB if nothing else. +4/-3, but probably has the bars to be useful at WLB.
6(27): TE Morris Patterson (21/49)--Three blue combines at a position where we could use depth. +4/+2. Could be a future starter.
7(27): NT Jermaine Lester (9/29)--Pretty solid dash/agi, so he gets a shot. +2/-1. Probably won't last past this year.

Other stuff of note...
  • QB Banks is +3 to 55/55.
  • Neither holdout was willing to budge.

I'm going to have to go with a shorter passing game plan with Banks, it appears. He has been an interception machine so far in our longer passing scheme.

Ben E Lou 12-13-2010 05:51 PM

We did have three Pro Bowl performers this year:

2013
TE
Zach Miller
39 catches, 540 yds, 3 TDs, 9.64 ypt.
2013
C
B.J. Beeler
23 for 57 KRB. (40.4%) 0 pnk.
2013
S
Eric Berry
119 tkl, 46 assists, 2 INTs, 19 psdef, 82.3 PDPct.

Ben E Lou 12-13-2010 05:52 PM

...and Berry was a 1st Team All-Pro, both DogBytes and Solecismic.

Ben E Lou 12-13-2010 06:40 PM

Nothing major to start 2014, other than trading away some draft picks to free up cap room and the releasing of a couple of 37/37 types. After renegs, we head into free agency with around $9M to spend. We have starter holes at NT, CB, and S, and we could really use a LB as well. Finally, WR Clayton is a free agent.

Ben E Lou 12-14-2010 07:48 AM

Now that I'm actually going after FAs from multiple positions, it's fairly clear that the way I structured the FA house rule is too restrictive in that it forces a bonus that's in some positions well above the norm. I'd like a bit more flexibility in offering contracts to free agents, so I've done a recalc based on salary+bonus and per-position, and here's where I've arrived:

NEW RULE FOR FAs: Any contract offered to a FA rated 45 future or better must have an average amount per year of the following percentages of the effective salary cap.

QB 4.8%
RB 3.4%
FB 1.3%
TE 1.8%
WR 4.1%
OT 3.9%
OG 2.5%
C 2.2%
P 0.8%
K 1.3%
DE 2.8%
DT 2.8%
OLB 3.2%
ILB 2.7%
CB 4.2%
S 2.7%

I've got these values in a spreadsheet that just requires me to enter the league salary cap for the current season, and it does the rest, telling me how much per year I muat offer. For this year, that would be:

SALARY CAP 141.1
Effective Cap 105.8

POS PER YEAR MIN
QB 5.1
RB 3.6
FB 1.3
TE 2.0
WR 4.4
OT 4.2
OG 2.7
C 2.4
P 0.9
K 1.4
DE 2.9
DT 3.0
OLB 3.3
ILB 2.9
CB 4.4
S 2.9

2014 FA1 KEY SIGNINGS OF NOTE
FS Malcolm Jenkins (54/54)
RCB Kareem Jackson (65/65)

We struggled against the pass last year and had real holes at these two positions, so these signings are key. Incidentally, both of these guys cost roughly the same (within $300K) as they would have under the "old" house rule. The real difference will be that WRs and QBs cost more, and OL and FB cost less, I suspect.

2014 DRAFT
I only have two picks, and I end up trading both of them along with my 2015 3rd round pick to get up to #10. There's a monster LB there who is also an affinity. We could use help at that position.

1(10): WLB-->SLB Karl Forbes (42/79)--He's a beast. We'll move him to SLB.

Ben E Lou 12-14-2010 02:19 PM

No signings of note in FA2.

TC Notes...
  • QB Banks is +2/+2 and is now 56/56.
  • FB Cox is showing the effects of age and went -12 in camp.
  • TE Morris Patterson, a 6th-round 21/49 pick last year, unmasked to 40/56 and will get a good bit of playing time.
  • 1st round pick Forbes is +7/-1 in camp.

The 2015 Offseason begins with a bit of a bang as we release DE Glenn Dorsey. As you can see if you clicked on the link, he has been paid a lot of money, and hasn't produced much. FB Mike Cox and WLB Tamba Hali also head out the door. Also of note is that TE Zach Miller does not get another FA offer. I think that Morris Patterson (51/57) is more than ready.

LG Renaldo Davison, a former 2nd round pick who has developed into an 80+ stud, gets a big extension on the o-line.

I don't have the cap room to sign a quality FA, so no big changes there.

2015 DRAFT

I don't have any obvious gaping holes, but I do have many positions that could use an upgrade or a youngster-in-waiting, so I'd expect to just grab the best guy available in most slots.

1(30): FL Joel Price (29/35)--Reds in 40/agility/position. He looks like a seriously explosive player.
2(30): LT Matthew McMicheal (27/44)--Three blues, top adjusted rating guy left, #1 guy left by my analyzer weights. Easy choice.
3(15): LG Quinn Ramstad (13/52)--Another 3-blue guy. Also an affinity.
4(30): TE B.J. Kelly (23/54)--3 blues, but a green. Only one TE under contract besides him.
5(30): RT Everett Evans (11/42)--Only had two OTs under contract heading into the draft, so no biggie about drafting a pair.
6(30): RB Harold Werner (18/28)--Another bpa at a position that's thin. He's the default RB2 at the moment.
7(30): FS Ron Fitzpatrick (12/28)--Not much exciting. Probably nothing better than a backup safety.

It looks like we'll put a good-not-great team on the field this season. I think we're a hair worse than last year.

Banks was a turnover machine this year. Even after I shortened up the pass plays considerably, he kept on throwing picks. He had four in a winning effort in the AFC Championship Game, even. I guess big props should go to the defense, led by SLB Hughes. He was never in the depth chart at WLB, but still racked up 15.5 sacks. He was the rightful DPOY.

I was really surprised to win this title, especially to win it in the rather odd way we did, leading the league in turnovers. *shurg*

I don't know if you commented on this, but seriously... this is the most obviously made-up name since Wolf Blitzer. Let's Win? Come on.

Two big moves to announce in the early portion of the 2016 offseason:

1. QB Timothy Banks gets a big 6-year deal.
2. RB Jamaal Charles gets cut. He only had 4.23 and 4.21 ypc the last two seasons, and was set to make nearly $8M in salary both this year and next.

Keeping the rest of the team mostly together is the main order of business. CB Flowers, who has six straight seasons with 5+ picks, is a UFA, and four other starters are RFAs or UFAs. The money is simply not there to pursue FS Malcolm Jenkins, so we let him fly. No other significant moves are made in FA1.

2016 DRAFT

Same situation as last year: I don't have any obvious gaping holes, but I do have many positions that could use an upgrade or a youngster-in-waiting, so I'd expect to just grab the best guy available in most slots.

1(32): LDE Dustin Whitman (17/39)--Best player available at this slot, and at a position where I have no depth whatsoever behind the starters, plus he's an affinity guy.
2(32): RT Antonio Endzell (22/42)--Three blues, and the best guy I saw here. Also an affinity.
3(32): RG Alonzo Redden(23/61)--Another 3-blue guy. Big guy, too.
4(11): RCB Bryan Flannery (15/48)--Red agility, blue dash. He'll probably be our nickel guy this year.
4(32): FB Adam Atkins (18/25)--Terrible bars, but 3 blues and 1 red at a position where I don't have much and don't want to spend $ on in FA.
5(32): MLB-->SILB Walt Brady (12/36)--Looks like he could be a pretty big creeper. I'm thinking he's a great find here and we only have 4 LBs under contract.
6(32): TE Eddie Barrett (18/41)--2 blues and an affinity.
7(32): QB Bubba Frase (6/28)--Triple affinity QB who might have a bit of upside.

I have decided to hold out until I receive a new contract.

I believe I made a huge difference on defense last season. I believe I'm very seriously underpaid, and will not report to camp without a new contract.
I can *just* barely afford what he's asking, but it remains to be seen if he's "worth" the big contract I sign him to in future years.
