San Fernando Dragons Select:

Vince, Pt. II 08-06-2019 01:42 AM

Was seriously wondering where to slot him. I think it's a reach, but he was in my top ten for sure. I can't imagine you will be disappointed with the pick.

I also can't believe I get the best baseball player of all time at #5, but I'll take what fortune wants to give me.

LOL. I was ready with my picks.

Love the Ted Williams pick. I just wasnt sure if the defense was going to populate like it does on "Perfect Team" where it seems like the old time players get severe penalties on their defense. I think it was suppose to have been fixed on the last patch.

Vince, Pt. II 08-06-2019 12:20 PM

Ted Williams and Walter Johnson at the back end of round one seems like absurd value.

Thanks bhlloy. I think I actually had 1963, but I'll verify when I get back to a computer.

bhlloy 08-06-2019 03:55 PM

Yeah, interestingly 1961 was his best WAR year but not even close to his best offensive year (I realized this after I was posting as I was evaluating my pick) - actually was a down year for offense but highest based on a pretty dramatic swing in defensive WAR. I'd probably go for a different year as well if it was up to me.

Updated he draft post through 2.4. Will be back on shortly to continue the updates.

Randy Johnson was a pain. Except for one other player the "01" version of the player has been the one we wanted... Randy Johnson was 05. I guess there were a lot of johnsra players that year. Including a Rankin Johnson Jr. AND Rankin Johnson Sr.... who knew...

No, I took the guys I wanted, Honus would've been in a debate with Cal, but that was always going to be my second pick, Carl was always going to be first, so it's fair game.

Honus was #1 on the list I submitted to EagleFan last night, but I waffled, and some friends eventually talked me into Hank Aaron.

I'm enjoying watching the different approaches. Want to see how the games turn out. Went with the shortened season so that every game means something.

EagleFan 08-06-2019 09:15 PM

If this season goes well I may do a second season but maybe with a twist, like not being able to draft players who were taken in season 1. :)

tarcone 08-06-2019 09:20 PM

Shoot a 419 average season is ranked 4th as a CF? WHAT? Holy smokes. The talent in MLB is crazy.

Finding it fascinating how the players are being rated and ranked as I import them. Going to be some serious talent in the league.

I'd like to see only being able to draft one player from each decade as an awesome twist if you do this again. Maybe once you've selected from all 14, you can reuse them or something.

Or something like 2 from each decade, and pre 1920 counts as one decade with the rule above about reuse?

Vince, Pt. II 08-07-2019 01:33 AM

Grrr...I had my hopes up that Clemens would make it to me. Great pick...that puts me in a bind between several players I really like. After a lot of hemming and hawing...

SS Ernie Banks, 1959 Chicago Cubs

And EagleFan, if you don't mind I would like to swap my Hank Aaron pick to 1963 Hank Aaron, not 1961 Hank Aaron.

Vince, Pt. II 08-07-2019 01:44 AM

Question: how interchangeable are OF positions? It's been a long time since I have played OOTP regularly. If I were to select someone who hypothetically never played an inning in LF in their career, but I moved them to LF, how much would that mess with them?

Also, I should be around almost all day tomorrow. If it gets stuck on me and that list still has people in it, feel free to pick for me, but give me a reasonable amount of time first (an hour or two should be plenty).

Yeah, I don't think you'd want to do that if they don't have any experience at the position. It's certainly not "OF positions are interchangeable" from my experience. And that actually brings a couple more important points to my mind, as haven't imported historical players into OOTP in many years.

1) Will imported players come in with just experience and rating at their primary position they played that year, or a realistic balance of the positions they played that season/over the import period?

2) Will the CPU manager put SP as relievers and actually use them reliably, or is it going to freak out and do stupid stuff if you don't have a true MR/CL on the roster? Not sure if anyone is considering doing that, but that would be sad if somebody takes a bunch of great SP and ruins their team. Historically dominant relievers are not a dime a dozen.

Sadly no new pick.

That said a question for our host, EagleFan.

If I was looking at a player who was traded midseason, which team does he fall under? The team he started the season with? The team he ended the season with? or gulp both teams?

Thanks and hopefully we get back to picking soon :)

Good question. Team he ended with.

EagleFan 08-08-2019 04:18 PM

We'll give him a bit more time. He hasn't been online for a while, hope all is well.

If it gets too much longer I'll put down a deadline and what we'll do is bypass him and continue and then he can make the picks he missed when he returns.

Thank you and I agree that '85 might be the better season...but he's also a Yankee in '85 and for the future I needed him to not be a Yankee. So 1990 it was and I'll just need to find my CF elsewhere. :D

I like them. I think some of the fun will be looking back at the choices and deciding what we liked, what we hated, what the ratings had right and where they were off (I mean it's an 18 game season with maybe a 3 game playoff so we're probably going to see some crazy SSS swings for some of these guys.

Bah. 1 & 2 on my list. Great picks both. Henderson and what year to take for him was a great debate for me and some friends. I had him as a fringe 1st round talent; you don't get any better of a leadoff hitter, and it's not particularly close.
