Wimbledon - John Isner is done, after 3 days, results inside [spoilers]

Longest match in Wimbledon history

Radii 06-23-2010 11:28 AM

yeah I am watching this now, insanity.

NewIdentity 06-23-2010 11:30 AM

I am just amazed that there is no Prime Time at Wimbledon.

I thought all sports had to go under the lights because of television in the modern era.

MIJB#19 06-23-2010 11:53 AM

33-33 right now. craziness.

MJ4H 06-23-2010 11:54 AM

2 match point BUTNAH

Easy Mac 06-23-2010 12:01 PM

We're pushing 7 hours of tennis. So I would have needed to start watching at 6 in the morning. I was still an hour from waking up when they started.

whomario 06-23-2010 12:12 PM

epic shit !

Actually it started yesterday, postponed do to darkness.

Ksyrup 06-23-2010 12:38 PM

39 all.

You know, I don't bet at all, but I'm thinking about putting my house on whoever plays the winner of this match in the next round.

Ksyrup 06-23-2010 12:40 PM

Anyone know if there have been any service breaks since they got beyond 8-6, or how many?

SirFozzie 06-23-2010 12:43 PM

none. In fact, Isner has not even faced a BREAK POINT in 39 fifth set service games.

(and don't be so quick to bet the house on the opponent, the player who they'll face in the next round ALSO had a marathon fifth set, although in that case it was only 14-12)

Ksyrup 06-23-2010 12:43 PM

So, win or lose, how many articles will be written in France comparing Mahut's effort in this match with the French soccer team?

Ksyrup 06-23-2010 12:47 PM

Wiinner plays third on Court 18 tomorrow. Oy.

Isner's got 83 aces (and counting).

Actually Wimbledon's show courts are under lights now. Djokovic went until 11 pm London time on day 1 before winning. The outside courts like where Isner is playing have no lights.

MIJB#19 06-23-2010 12:56 PM

If they keep this up, they'll still be playing at the end of the week...

SirFozzie 06-23-2010 12:56 PM

152 aces so far (83 and 69)

larrymcg421 06-23-2010 12:58 PM

"This guy just won't die!"

Wimbledon will have to stop play in order for this first round match to finish, lol

stevew 06-23-2010 01:02 PM

20 some games ago, I posted on my facebook that they should just move on to trick shots to settle the game.

I'm actually pissed I don't have espn3 anymore.

SirFozzie 06-23-2010 01:04 PM

You've heard of the grueling five hour match.. this is a grueling five hour SET.

Izulde 06-23-2010 01:05 PM

Glad I caught the tail end of it

SirFozzie 06-23-2010 01:06 PM

That was a fun point, even before you take into account that it was the 86th game of the set!

Izulde 06-23-2010 01:08 PM

damn and there it goes to 43-all

They should just do a coin flip to see who moves to the next round :)

Solecismic 06-23-2010 01:09 PM

They're both really, really terrible at returning service. Compare the pace of this travesty to Federer. It's like watching a high school competition in comparison.

They should honor Isner and Mahut with trophies depicting the queen yawning and filing her nails.

SirFozzie 06-23-2010 01:12 PM

come on, Jim.. you play 130 games in a match and then try to move laterally :)

Technically, if they keep this up, won't they be playing forever?

The audacity of tennis - settling contests on the court!

SirFozzie 06-23-2010 01:28 PM

Ok... screw this, time to nap and watch the second set of WC games

Thomkal 06-23-2010 01:29 PM

in other Wimbledon news, it looks like it may be the beginning of the end for Roger Federer. He has looked far from his normal great self in first two matches against two no names. Had to come back from two sets down to win first match, and had to hold on in a tiebreaker in 4th set to prevent another five set match.

CU Tiger 06-23-2010 01:30 PM

btw on espnu now for anyone interested

Ksyrup 06-23-2010 01:34 PM

Looks like ESPN.com's Pulse app is being overloaded. I didn't realize it got stuck on 44-all until I saw in the chat box it was actually 46-all. So I exited out and tried to restart, and nothing's working.

Only centre court has lights, and only when the roof is closed.

Izulde 06-23-2010 01:38 PM

47-all actually :D

JonInMiddleGA 06-23-2010 01:45 PM

48-48

Drake 06-23-2010 01:52 PM

I'm beginning to think this one doesn't end until someone dies.

Izulde 06-23-2010 01:52 PM

49-all

Vince, Pt. II 06-23-2010 01:52 PM

The fact that the commentators keep saying "That's ace number XX already!" is irritating me. Already? This is absurd.

Drake 06-23-2010 01:56 PM

Is it just me or has their (collective) return game actually gotten sharper over the last ten points or so? They looked really bad in the 30's -- as observed above, essentially no lateral movement from anyone -- but seem to have picked things up now that they've gotten their (sixty?)second winds.

Drake 06-23-2010 01:57 PM

dola...

I'm trying to imagine how my back would feel about now if I was either one of those guys. My back gets sore just sitting at my desk for too long.

JonInMiddleGA 06-23-2010 01:59 PM

50-50

DaddyTorgo 06-23-2010 02:01 PM

wow

Ksyrup 06-23-2010 02:03 PM

5150

Why Can't This Be Over?

Ksyrup 06-23-2010 02:07 PM

The Slam Tracker has run out of numbers, for some reason. It's now registered as 1-1 on their app. I guess it was programmed to go to 50 and that's it?

Sun Tzu 06-23-2010 02:07 PM

I don't get it...does one guy have to win by two points or something?

Ksyrup 06-23-2010 02:08 PM

Two games.

Ksyrup 06-23-2010 02:08 PM

We're not talking about points here, we're talking games.

AlexB 06-23-2010 02:09 PM

From the BBC live text...

1748: There are some very red faces out on Court 18, send sunblock immediately. Mahut leans on the net and chuckles after one point in the first visible acknowledgement from either man that they are involved in a ridiculous game of tennis. Ridiculous but record breaking as it becomes officially the longest tennis match in history when it goes past six hours and 34 minutes. A 'shock' graphic will have to do the job.

That was 2 hours 20 minutes ago folks! This is already 50% longer than the previous record, and is about to hit 9 hours :D

Izulde 06-23-2010 02:13 PM

52-all. Damn.
