2013-2014 NCAA Basketball What-if Sports Season
Since I have limited internet at home at the moment and can't move forward with my FBCB interactive coaches dynasty at the moment, I'm going to start setting up my WIS NCAA BB season. I know that it could be a month yet before WIS puts the 2013-2014 basketball teams up for simming, but I figure if I can have teams and conferences decided, and get non-conference schedules set up, that'll save me some time and I can get to simming when WIS does release the teams. Here's a breakdown of how this will work:
Conference Breakdown 8 conferences of 16 teams each, 2 divisions per conference with 8 teams per division. Team Selection I will use ALL the teams from 8 particular conferences. The rest of the teams will be selected by random selection. I will probably take votes for specific teams that readers want to see in, and then use some of the other teams from the other power conferences that didn't make it in. The 8 conferences will be filled with these teams randomly until each conference has 16 teams I have also set up how I am going to play out this season. I am treating it as a full regular season, split into several parts. 1. Each team will play a 3 game season opening tournament. There will be 16 tournaments, featuring 8 teams each, with each tournament having 1 team from each conference. The format for all tournaments will be such as you see at the Maui Invitational, and the teams for each tournament will be selected totally random with a dice roller 2. Each team will play 7 non-conference games, 1 game against a team from another conference, until all 8 conferences have played each other once. The games will also be selected totally random with a dice roller. 3. Each team will play 8 games, one against each conference opponent in the other division. 4. Each team will play a home and home series against the other 7 teams in their division. Now by my count, this will give every team 32 games overall, and 22 conference games. Postseason I will have the 68 team NCAA tournament. To give it more of a feel of actual March Madness, I will be simming the other conferences tournaments to get some teams from the lower conferences in as 14, 15, 16 seeds. By my count there are 32 conferences in the actual 2013-2014 NCAA basketball season. That means I will have to run 24 AQ tournaments aside from the 8 conference tournaments from the conferences that will be featured in this replay. Some of the conferences may have a short tournament, depending on how many teams I take from a conference to fill the 8 conferences I'm using in this dynasty. I will also have at least a postseason NIT, maybe a CBI and CIT. I will continue to think on that. This does, of course mean, that some of the original 128 teams in this dynasty may not make a postseason tournament, as 24 slots in the NCAA tournament will be delegated to teams not already in this dynasty. Only other thing is top 25 polls, RPI, etc etc. I would still be interested in having a committee help with that, or I can just do it all by myself and have you guys gripe at me when the team you like gets under ranked or under seeded in a tournament. ;) I'm hoping to get all the teams and conferences decided by tonight and start setting up the 16 tournaments over the weekend. The 8 conferences I am using are the ACC, American, Atlantic 10, Big East, Big 10, Big 12, Pac 12, and SEC. By my count, that will make up 96 of the 128 teams, meaning I need to add 32 more from other conferences. If anybody wants to see a specific team in this dynasty that isn't in 1 of those 8 conferences, please let me know. I know bbgunn likes Hawaii, so they will be in this dynasty, which leaves 35 slots to fill. And guys, don't worry, you can still choose a team that you want in it even after I fill all the slots, at least until I get ready to start simming. At that point, things are locked. If I have filled all the slots and somebody wants a specific team, I will just remove one team and add the team that somebody wants. So don't be shy, if you want a certain team in, let me know, the sooner the better. |

That's all I can do until What If Sports gets the teams up so that I can get going on this. All 16 tournaments have been announced. After the tournaments starts non-conference play, where each conference will challenge the other 7 conferences. This will make 10 non-conference games which is good.
If anybody wants to make any predictions on the season opening tournaments, feel free. Also, sorry guys, but at this point, the teams are locked. If there is a team that you wanted to see in that didn't make it in, let me know and I will try to get them in next time. I hope you all enjoy, I'm really looking forward to getting this started. |
Guys, I need your opinions. One of the things I'm really stressing about on this project is whether or not to use the top 25 polls or not. In my past projects (a lot of them that I haven't reported on), I do top 25 and am never really happy with it.
Which is why I figured I would try to get you guys to help. Another idea I had is to make my top 25 of just RPI and nothing else, but that might take a lot of work too. So I can either do the top 25 to the best of my ability, do the top 25 with help from you guys if anybody wants to help, use RPI for top 25 which would require a lot of extra work I think, or just scrap the top 25 all together. What do you think? |
So the top 25 is not automated in WIS? If not, I think it's just fine to scrap the Top 25, personally. In college basketball, the Top 25 is just window-dressing anyway.

But I agree on the Top 25 idea: don't worry about it. It's hard enough to get enough participation for the NCAA Football Top 25 and that's with actual games. I don't suppose there's something that does RPI for you? If not, just give conference rankings once we get there. Maybe do a 1-time RPI right before the tourney SI |
good to hear from you SI. The main reason I was even worried about RPI, SOS, etc etc, was when it came time to setting up the brackets for the postseason tournaments. I'm sure that will give me some problems when it comes time for that.

If you want to throw out RPI almost entirely, you could try to balance out the schedule as much as possible and just take the best records.
For instance: Quote:

Let every team have a chance to make it in (you have to love the "democracy" of the NCAA tourney where any team winning the right number of games can win the title) but you may make the road a bit bumpier as suddenly the MVC becomes a 16 team tourney instead of the 8 it is without Whichita State and Indiana State. A few other little points: * I'd run the pre-season tourneys like you did the group play last year. First round gets a post, second round gets a post, and third round gets a post. * Same with the post-season tourneys. Are you going to do a simple 4 round or the silly (but "more fair") Big East 5 round 16-team monstrosity with 2 sets of byes? * If you decide to do an NIT, CBI, and CIT- they can be quick writeups and should be done before the real tourney * If there is suitable fan participation, you could throw open the final 2 or 4 spots to audience participation. Post 10 or so resumes and post a poll. It's a little harder without RPI rankings, tho. SI |

That does leave 24 other conferences that would have a conference tournament for an auto bid. Just to be clear are you saying that say, for instance, I combine the SWAC and the MEAC (2 conferences whose auto qualifiers usually end up as 16 seeds) and make that 1 tournament? I believe that's what you're saying but I just want to be clear. If this is what you are saying, I can absolutely do this. Also, as far as the balanced schedule, I like the idea, but I do think that would be too hard to figure out. I figured since I randomized the tournaments, I would just randomize the non-conference matchups as well. For the 8 conferences that I'm using in the game, for the 16 team conference tournament, I'm using straight 16 team single elimination, no byes. So you're right, it would be 4 rounds. I like your idea of audience participation. I'm not sure RPI has to play a huge role in this, I know it does for the real tournament, but I think I can make this work otherwise. I appreciate your ideas, and I hope you don't get offended if I don't apply all of them to this, as I did have my own ideas that I did want to implement. I do like most of your ideas though, the balanced schedule was something I was teetering on for non-conference play. |
I was just blueskying some suggestions so if they aren't taken- no offense taken at all. Some of them are probably only half baked, at best.
What I was getting at with the AQ is like what you said: maybe make a cutoff where if there are less than 10 or 12 teams in a conference, you'll break up another conference so there are at least 10/12 in every one of the smaller conferences. It would open up more spots for the teams you spent more time on during the "conference" season. SI |

The next step is more non-conference play, as each conference will play every other conference, making 7 more non-conference games for each team. Wake Forest beating UConn might be the upset of this challenge. Duke and North Carolina got much needed wins. Final Tally: ACC wins 9-7 This will be my format for at least the rest of non-conference play, and maybe the whole regular season. I thought about doing a game of the week and some game wrap-ups, but with such a long season to get through, plus having a lot of other stuff going on, short and sweet is better in this case. I like putting records for each team during the games, so that you guys have an idea, and this also eliminates me from having to post standings every single week. Bolding the winning team for each game also makes it easier. Let me know what you guys think. |

I had both of those teams in my final four this season in reality, but alas, both fell short. Final Tally: Big Ten wins 10-6 |
Just so everybody knows, I am not giving up on this project, quite the contrary. I took this week and next week off from my regular job, but unfortunately left the excel files on the work computer (I have a lot of free time at work to work on stuff), so I'm unable to do any reporting on this for another week. However, I have been working on writing schedules and simming games when I can, so I should be able to fire up 3 or 4 weeks of this project within a day or 2 when I get back to work.
