Alright Boyz, Here We Go!!!! (OOTP 2007 Preview Thoughts...)

For those who have it, let's start posting!

Ben E Lou 03-02-2007 07:37 PM

First impression. Uh, holy CRAP. The sim speed is darn near Mogul-esque! I made a mistake and didn't send my manager on vacation, and had to manually go in the first time, but I'm guesssing that a season (including full HTML output and year-end save) is going to take less than 5 minutes. :eek:

cartman 03-02-2007 07:50 PM

Something is wrong with the title of this thread, but I just can't put my finger on it. How about a little help, boys...

:D

Ben E Lou 03-02-2007 07:51 PM

Ah. With full reporting, it does take a bit longer. The season itself will definitely take less than 5 minutes. Timing reports right now...

Fixed. ;)

Ben E Lou 03-02-2007 08:00 PM

(See lots of people coming to look...still running reports for the first time. I select everything, for a 16-team league with full 5-level minors. It is at 16 minutes and counting, and says it is 84% complete. I definitely won't want all the boxes and logs for my yearly reporting. For the next season, I'll check the time on just the ones I see myself actually using.)

Rizon 03-02-2007 08:06 PM

How is the head-to-head working?

(kidding)

Ben E Lou 03-02-2007 08:11 PM

68-page PDF manual is included.

You must have this confused with OOTP 6.x

:D

Ben E Lou 03-02-2007 09:04 PM

Sorry for the delay there. WOOF Solevision was calling. I should have said it was a wrong number.

Definitely using full reports isn't feasible for SP, unless you play one season a night, then start up the reports before going to bed. I don't quite understand all it needs to do here, but it has been an hour and 20 minutes. I think it's doing each season's almanac. (It's now 2008.)

Ben E Lou 03-02-2007 09:05 PM

While we wait for the almanac. Here are the contents of off_field_injuries.txt. I presume we can just edit whatever we want into this.

//Format:
//type of injury, light injury (0 = doesn't matter, 1 = yes),minimum year (0 = does not matter),injury event
//type of injuries:

//running = 2,
//collision = 3,
//fight = 4,
//illness = 5,
//undiscloded = 6
//Use undisclosed if you are unsure wether the expected injury is in the database

WOOF Solevision just got me, too. I now officially hate JC Cox.

Meanwhile, I'm hitting a snag in getting any of the real databases to work, so I'm going to start my first test with fictional players, but I should be able to still see what type of players lead the league in triples and such.

cartman 03-02-2007 09:08 PM

What better, getting injured skipping stones at a lake or throwing dog a frisbee?

Young Drachma 03-02-2007 09:11 PM

Well this gives me something to look forward to as we get into March...

Eaglesfan27 03-02-2007 09:20 PM

Hmmm. My problem may have been the database after all. I'm trying another database now, and it seems to be importing correctly. So, I'll start a real player career test starting in 2005 in a few minutes if this continues to progress well.

Edited to add: It's importing very slowly because I'm using the option to have every guy from the past 100 plus years added into the game with their career stats which seems like it will be a great option to provide a real history for a current day league.

Ben E Lou 03-02-2007 09:25 PM

OK. Headed to bed right now. It's January 1st, 2009. We'll see how far it sims by the morning, with limited (like I'd really want to have) reporting turned on. I'll start the sim the moment I post this reply. It's set to run through 2209. It won't get that far, I'm sure. ;)

That's what Rip Van Winkle said...

:D

Eaglesfan27 03-02-2007 09:28 PM

FWIW, it definitely seems to be the database that was the problem. Perhaps, I had a corrupted download (I was using the same one that the the guy doing the big blogs was using and I tried re-downloading several times.) I'm now using the Gambo database and it is humming along importing a ton of history. Already at 50% after 11 minutes which seems good for the tradeoff of all of that history.

Eaglesfan27 03-02-2007 09:59 PM

Complete game universe with MLB and all minor leagues set up in under 30 minutes using the Gambo Database. No winter leagues or Asian leagues in this test. About 10-15 minutes of that time was letting the game use Facegen to create pictures for every single player. Just set up the Almanac to be somewhat selective in the number of HTML reports that are done. About to start simming seasons now (after putting my GM in vacation mode so the AI will run everything.)

Eaglesfan27 03-02-2007 10:04 PM

Dola -

The History is working perfectly with the import option. Looking at the Phillies, I can quickly with a glance on one page see a history of who started for the majority of the year at each position. Looking at 1980, I can then click on Schmidt and pull up his record (with a fictional facegen pic) and see all of his current ratings (all 1's) as well as his career stats.

I now have stats of EVERY player who ever played on the Major League Level that I can quickly view the index. The 30 minute setup is definitely worth it for this. Now, to sim a few years and see if I see any odd trades/releases, etc.

I don't know if you want huge pics of the output of this in this thread, so I'm going to put Schmidt's example in the mini-dynasty thread that I was planning on starting.

I wont get to my preview til Sunday

miked 03-02-2007 10:06 PM

After the weekend, I'll be doing some 6.5 conversions and simming ahead a bit. Glad the ghost player option is back, because 2006 created 1000 new players when importing. I'll really be digging into the conversion stats and more since that was a big issue last version.

miked 03-02-2007 10:08 PM

Dola- I have no idea whether I won in WOOF, but I know I scored less than 20 points.

Eaglesfan27 03-02-2007 10:30 PM

An entire calendar year was just simmed in 10 minutes.

For the question about triples:

Rafael Furcal led the league in triples in 2005 with 16. He has a 63 in gap power, 94 speed, and 95 baserunning instincts.

Jose Reyes was 2nd with 14. He has 66 gap power, 100 speed, and 76 base running instincts.

Michael Tucker was 3rd with 12. He has 66 gap power, 68 speed, and 67 base running.

5 or 6 guys tied with 8.

The Leader Screen is really nicely organized and allows for easy viewing of leaders in a wide variety of categories. Manny led the league with 53 homers in 05. Pujols led the league with a .373 batting average.

The only stat that looks somewhat surprising is that Mussina had 29 wins for the Yankees with a 29-2 record and a 2.82 ERA.

I'm going to eventually set this to run all night when I go to bed in an hour or two.

CraigSca 03-02-2007 10:32 PM

Man, I got dissed. I wonder who torqued-off not to get a preview copy?

Yeah, same hear. And not to sound like a whiner.....But, to be honest even though I am really liking the sound of this year's game, have been faithfully reading all the TRTR articles and was totally disappointed by last year if it turns out some people on the board were given given the preview code versions without even preordering I might just keep my money my pocket. I have no problem that they give more people a chance to test the game and to be honest they sound be doing an open beta for the last week or two after last year. The problem is the arbitrary slection of people.

DeftRevisited 03-02-2007 11:14 PM

Should these reviews of previews be posted?

The email that I received, said that I could post whatever I wanted wherever I wanted regarding the preview version, but if there was a serious problem to let the development team know. They apparently feel comfortable with their game and want us to post about it. Knowing that I and Skydog and whoever else have it here aren't censored in any way is only going to add to the validity of whatever we have to say. So far, I've been impressed with what I've seen. However, my almanac is also taking a very long time to populate. I think because of the many years of history that have to be converted.

TroyF 03-02-2007 11:26 PM

Just got everything installed. I'll start up a fictional league with full reporting and see how far I get by midday tomorrow. I'll post some thoughts from that perspective.

Building all the history pages takes a LOT of time. So I suggest unchecking this. In reality, this is only needed for online leagues once a season I guess, so you can let it run over night. When playing the game and browsing the history, those pages are generated on the fly :)

I basically told Marc that I wasn;t going to lie that I wouldn't mind a trial version, and that I was someone (one among a lot) who didn't think much of OOTP2006. I havent pre-ordered yet either, but I'm someone who buys every text game no matter what. Of course, I also was a commish in an online league that ended last year so I probably had that going for me.

But it seems like you are upset because you weren't picked on something that was relatively at random but open to all? It wasn't like it was offered to everyone on the board. There were minimal requirements that were set and to be honest I was actually surprised I was selected. Pleased none the less however (No offense to Marc but I had been hoping for the Mega millions lotto as my lucky pick, but hey. :) 277 million dollars is a lot of cash)

OOTP 2007 needs some files from the lahman database now that weren't required before. If you used an old custom database, then these files are missing (allstar,awardsplayer,halloffame,seriespost).

OK. Now for the BIG question for me: the interface. Markus, I see you're still here, so I'll ask, or, you can turn your IM on, so as not to clutter up this thread with a bunch of n00b questions. ;)

BIG QUESTION: Is there a screen where I can see, say, every catcher in my organization? Ideally, a place where I can see star ratings, current and potential in con/pwr/eye, fielding ratings, handedness, and age. In a perfect world, I could use this screen to assign my catchers to the levels in the organization that I want them.

I'm online on MSN. And yes, I'll tell you how to get this.

...and generated very, very quickly on the fly, I must admit. 25 seasons in, and the pages come up in a reasonable amount of time.

First impression from looking at the history is that dynasties do exist. Granted, this is only a 16-team league, but the repeat customers in the championship games are obvious. The sim is running on the other computer, so I'll copy and paste in the next post.

Good to see you are liking it Skydog, and agree about the speed, it's vastly improved from 2006. About the reports, as Markus said, there is no need of having them ON as the game itself has all the history and stats so it's not like in the past that we needed to build the almanac to watch the history. The html reports are only needed for online leagues now.

Btw MrBug, now that you have the game too, we can comment it by AIM, i hated to not to be able to openly talk with you before :)

Well, I haven't said I like it or dislike it yet. I like what I've seen so far about the sim speed and the almanac. It's too early to make that sort of verdict. Markus just answered two key questions for me. I'm going to check out a couple of things, and be back to give more impressions...

You can create and save a custom view + filters in the roster screen to look exactly what you asked for:
