So they just made Quinn the best significant other on the show since Victoria. Sucks to be Ted!

Easy Mac 03-20-2012 08:10 AM

So my latest, convoluted theory:

At the end, Ted didn't call her "Aunt Quinn," he said "this is how I met Quinn." Now, perhaps Quinn doesn't merit Aunt status for the purposes of the story, unlike the core cast.

Or, the mother is Quinn's friend, who is set to marry Barney, but they don't get married/do get divorced. This would allow the kids to meet Quinn at some future time as a friend of their mother's, without her necessarily being together with "Uncle" Barney.

With BBT last week I was really surprised that they didn't take the route of "here's the labelmaker for you to label your stuff because I want you to move in with me" type of thing. At least temporarily. I was sure it was going that route.

Uh. They've gotten so wrapped up in twists that everyone knew what the ending would be. That's a shame - its okay to tell the story straight for once.

Hated last night's episode. Hoping next season is the last. They've gotten too cute with the writing on the show.

WTF are they doing with this show? Last night's episode could have been a classic but instead it was quite lame.

Swaggs 05-15-2012 12:15 PM

Anyone else feel like there is a 90% chance that Ted turns around and takes Victoria back to the wedding in next season's premier (or it happened and he tells his kids about for 10 seconds into the first episode).

I'm also wondering if Quinn might die or something (maybe she leaves Barney or is a fraud?), so Barney and Robin don't become too unsympathetic. I know all engagements don't' work out, but we've already had Ted and Robin engaged without getting married, Ted likely ruining Victoria's engagement, and now somehow Barney won't get married, too? With the prospect of Barney getting engaged to Robin at some point and Ted presumably meeting the mother, they have kind of desensitized us to proposal/engagement episodes.

Passacaglia 05-15-2012 12:23 PM

I'm surprised to see people say they like Quinn's character. This whole "I'm dating a stripper" plot has been garbage (apologies to Chief Rum).

Perhaps my expectations are low after the godawful guest stars they've thrown our way for all of Ted's relationships (except for Victoria who is awesome), I dunno. But I like Quinn's character and the relationship with Barney quite a lot.

DaddyTorgo 05-15-2012 03:40 PM

I think there's multiple appeals of the Quinn character. In no particular order.

1. She doesn't put up with any of Barney's shit - aka she gives as good as she gets. Just look at how they met, and all the crap he's tried to put her through and she comes right back at him instead of folding.
2. She has now made a big sacrifice, giving up her job for him.
3. She's an attractive stripper.

I think it felt rushed with Quinn which might be why people reject it but it really sucks to me that she and Barney don't end up together. They have more chemistry than the other two will ever have.

Robin and Ted were never engaged. Barney and Robin were but only for part of an episode. Ted and Stella were also engaged.

ISiddiqui 05-15-2012 10:19 PM

Just saw the episode and I thought it was decent. And yes, I agree with what DanGarion said, re: Quinn. I wonder about the Victoria angel - it doesn't really seem like Ted to break up a marriage. He may be a douche, but he respected some things.

I didn't mean to each other.

Ted was engaged to Stella. Robin was engaged to Kevin. Now, we know that Barney and Quinn were engaged (and presumably didn't get married, although maybe they did?) Victoria was engaged (may still get married?). I don't even remember Barney and Robin being engaged, but I'll take your word for it.

The luster of the proposal and engagement on HIMYM has kind of worn off and we are expecting at least one or two more before the end of the show.

Kodos 05-15-2012 11:11 PM

Hated most of the "story" jokes. Although the stapler one was funny.

Really prefer the stripper for Barney. I was annoyed when they showed it was Robin.

Logan 05-16-2012 07:18 AM

I hate Ted. He wouldn't bang Vanessa Minnillo because she's engaged, but he'll take a girl away on her wedding day. Dumbass.

Not necessarily. Could have met at the wedding that preceded it.

I did see a great comment on Sepinwall's blog. She's standing there with her umbrella, guitar getting soaked, when she could have just walked 10 more feet to be under the overhang that was keeping Ted dry.

Crapshoot 09-24-2012 11:48 PM

I loved, loved tonights episode. I haven't laughed out loud that much in a while in a HIMYM episode. Yeah, the tricks Logan pointed out are a bit ridiculous, but at this point, that's tables stakes for this show - you live with it. :twocents:

I think it appears that way, but if you follow the "the mother is Barney's half sister" theory, she could have also been coming from the wedding. From what we saw of her, she was wearing a dress and nice shoes. Maybe her band played at the wedding.

I know it's not likely at this point, but I also think it's unlike the writers to tell us exactly how those two meet without any trick in how they got there.

Logan 09-25-2012 07:53 AM

And speaking of that shot of those important ankles...looked a little chubby, no?

Easy Mac 09-25-2012 07:55 AM

Per the avclub, the writers/creators are approaching this as the final season until they hear otherwise from the suits. Evidently its getting expensive.

I'm still in the camp that I don't want it to end with meeting the mother, only because I want to be shown why she's the mother, since the criteria seemed so important for Ted throughout the series.

But maybe that's the point, that we've always seen Ted describe who he thinks should be the mother based on "ineffable" qualities, when in reality those things never really mattered.

Kodos 09-25-2012 08:19 AM

This show has really gone downhill. Barely any laughs in last night's episode.

I hope it's Julie Taylor...

RainMaker 09-26-2012 02:41 AM

If they cared about maximizing ratings, they'd do the reveal during the midseason finale and give people a reason to tune in for the 2nd half. But I think they'll just do it in the finale. My guess is the season follows their relationships as they tank, then around midseason we see how Robin/Barney get back together. The season/series ends with Ted leaving their wedding depressed and running into her at the train station. Maybe a montage of stuff after to close out the show.

The episode was pretty bad I have to say. Doesn't even feel like they're trying for laughs. Does anyone else think that the final part will have something about the Mother dying and the reason Ted is telling them this story is so that they know about her?

ISiddiqui 09-26-2012 10:13 AM

Just saw the season premiere last night. Really enjoyed it and loved how they set up the season! Loved the 52 second recap, Marshall & Lilly zombies, Barney seducing the German woman on the phone, and Thomas Lennon as Klaus.

I'm a believer that she's pretty clearly Barney's sister at this point; makes sense with the younger, university student connection (she was in a class Ted walked into). I think she was at the wedding, but Ted just didn't meet her, as it were.(which now admittedly sounds pretty lame - she's Barney's sister)
