HIMYM/Big Bang Thread

New season begins tonight.

Someone less lazy than me can start separate threads if so desired. :)

Lathum 09-21-2009 12:02 PM

I think there already is a HIMYM thread

DaddyTorgo 09-21-2009 12:03 PM

yeah, where we were discussing BBT as well. but a new thread for the new season is fine.

i'm so excited!! i don't even mind that it's monday!!!

Lathum 09-21-2009 12:03 PM

How I Met Your Mother: Season Three - Front Office Football Central

It started with season 3 but kept going

Lathum 09-21-2009 12:04 PM

I love HIMYM but never got BBT, everything seems so forced on the show.

DaddyTorgo 09-21-2009 12:16 PM

i dunno...i find the geek-humor of it appealing. particularly because it's inter-geek rather than like non-geeks making fun of geeks.

plus you get those great sheldon-facts that you can bring into everyday life (kinda like you can with Dr. Reed on Criminal Minds)

wade moore 09-21-2009 12:16 PM

BBT is one of the best sitcoms in years.

These need to be separate threads though, I do not watch HIMYM.

Agreed, but I'm the opposite.

ISiddiqui 09-21-2009 12:30 PM

I don't see why these should be combined. Especially since they aren't back-to-back anymore (and even before that, they were different types of sitcoms).

Dr. Sak 09-21-2009 12:33 PM

Are we really bitching about the fact that two shows are in one thread? Have we become a bunch of women? :)

Dr. Sak 09-21-2009 12:35 PM

What better:

ROBIN

PENNY

Fidatelo 09-21-2009 12:40 PM

Penny

Dr. Sak 09-21-2009 12:44 PM

Really? I thought Robin would have it sewn up with you cause of her hockey background.

ISiddiqui 09-21-2009 12:44 PM

Robin, without a doubt.

I don't care about it all that much, but it really is pretty stupid that they're in the same thread.

Ronnie Dobbs2 09-21-2009 12:52 PM

They both have really annoying lead characters, so they share that.

I don't want to have to sift through a bunch of comments about a show I don't like to read ones about a show I do like.

Radii 09-21-2009 01:01 PM

Robin and its not even close imo.

I didn't know she had a hockey background, so that narrows the gap I suppose, but when in doubt, blonde > brunette.

MrBug708 09-21-2009 01:21 PM

No problems with the combined threads. Im actually surprised that people who like one, don't like the other

kingnebwsu 09-21-2009 09:00 PM

Penny and it's not even close IMO.

People who only watch one or the other should really give both shows a chance. I like BBT better, but these are the only two shows with a laugh track that I can stomach.

kingnebwsu 09-21-2009 09:00 PM

Double post! :)

tarcone 09-21-2009 09:05 PM

I likeboth but prefer BBT. great show. Comedy gold.
And I like Penny better.Robin is rough.

Swaggs 09-21-2009 09:22 PM

If I saw still pictures of each, I would think Robin is better looking, but I find Penny more attractive overall.

DaddyTorgo 09-22-2009 07:27 AM

good episodes last night i thought. not "blow your mind amazing" but it was nice to see barney+robin finally get-together, and it was nice to see penny+leonard finally hook up. Those types of episodes are always tough for comedies and shows that have tension built in around the two characters getting together (thinking more of penny/leonard in this case particularly), and i have no doubt that it'll continue to be an on-again/off-again type of thing, but i thought given that they had two shows last night where they had to have sort of "payoff" in that sense that the shows were decently strong.

on an unrelated note - because i'm a lazy network exec's greatest hope, i refrained from changing the channel and watched the pilot of the new Jenna Elfman show that they stuck at 8:30 - gotta say I wasn't digging it at all.

HIMYM was good. BBT was not as good, but some fun lines (like the evolution "theory" getting Sheldon to go).

like i said earlier - i think they were both difficult episodes. i thought BBT was pretty funny...if anything I thought it was probably the funnier of the two, but only slightly. Like a 3pt win in the NFL

MrBug708 09-22-2009 11:25 PM

I though Raj playing along with the Vulcan Mind trick was great. And Walowitz's 'stach as well

Crapshoot 09-22-2009 11:43 PM

Vulcan Mind Trick? He was using the Force. [/nerd]. Jeez Bug; just what I expect from a Dodger fan. :D

ISiddiqui 09-22-2009 11:45 PM

Is there even such a thing as a Vulcan mind trick? It's like Bug got the Vulcan mind meld and the Jedi mind trick messed up ;).

The last two weeks of How I Met Your Mother have brought back a lot of the awesome that had been missing earlier in the season.

MrBug708 11-23-2009 07:32 PM

Probably has to do a lot with Barney not worrying about a girlfriend. It's what made the show what it is today!

HIMYM is one of my TV highlights of the week, and clearly Barney is the reason why. But as TK demonstrated 10 posts up, apparently there are people that watch these comedies (at least partially) for the wet-blanket dramatic storyline and not the awesomeness of Lorenzo von Matterhorn and friends. IMO, nothing was worse than the actress from Scrubs coming across for most of S4 - she nearly managed to completely ruin a 2nd comedy series.

I've given the Big Bang theory more than one shot but ever since it was pointed out that they have the most absurdly synched laugh track outside the Disney Channel I can't take that show seriously. Too bad as it definitely has parts with potential, but the overall package doesn't do it for me.

That's actually part of the whole joke.

Although it's at least 2 or 3 levels below the real joke.

ISiddiqui 11-27-2009 08:53 PM

LOL, super-fan wank! ;)

There was this great article on HIMYM and BBT and how they are lumped together (CBS comedies, same night), they are very, very different in how they are done. IIRC, the article was stating that BBT is usually very threadbare on plot, but uses the characters and their quirks for laughs, while HIMYM is very different in that it jams in tons and tons of plot (almost too much for a half hour show) and uses that to drive the show. Not that HIMYM doesn't have interesting characters, but they are secondary to the plot and the story that is trying to be told.

It was very interesting view and solidified why I'm much more of a HIMYM fan.

Racer 01-11-2010 06:08 PM

Just a reminder that there are new episodes for each of these shows tonight. For HIMYM, it's the 100th episode of the series.

ISiddiqui 01-11-2010 06:18 PM

Woot! 100th Episode of HIMYM!!

DaddyTorgo 01-11-2010 10:56 PM

hmm...just started my dvr of HIMYM...do we think that's the mom, or is there a swerve coming later in the episode?

Do I even dare ask what the real joke is? Because if it's lampooning TV viewers and sitcom tropes there are more subtle and less repetitive ways to go about it.

PS - I vote for fewer musical numbers on HIMYM.

On the other hand, my new favorite show is "Glee", so :p

I liked Dr. Horrible and some shows (South Park comes to mind) have integrated musical numbers well. I just didn't think this one was particularly well-done or had any funny lines. The funniest line was NPH telling Lily to get her head out of her ass (as if he would pick world peace over Suits) - and that was delivered monotone and could easily have been an exchange at the table.

Sheldon is getting a girlfriend...

Spoiler

DaddyTorgo 04-13-2010 08:56 AM

Wow. Umm...wow. Didn't see that coming AT ALL. Thought the relationship was going to finally go someplace...but not THERE.

Dunno how I feel about that.

And Evil Wil Wheaton...makes me as a Trekker want to punch him in the face. But I wouldn't. But that's some quality acting by him.

MrBug708 04-13-2010 09:04 AM

Wonder where it will go from here? Hopefully not a ross/rachel type of thing, though a baby in the mix would be...different

Yeah. Frankly, I was enjoying having them together...I didn't think it harmed the comedic value of the show, and I actually thought it opened up a lot of stories that they could have told and mined for comedy. Plus, the "geek getting the girl" story is always...nice.

I think if they started down the Ross/Rachel path I might start to really dislike the two characters passionately, and get pissed at the writers for going back to that typical well.

I'd like to see them apart for say maybe...the rest of the season? With a "get back together/i love you leonard" either in the season-finale, or have that as the cliffhanger moment resolved at the very beginning of next season.

Oh that's right...they did have the sort of "break up" thing for a little bit. IDK why I didn't count/remember that.

Yeah...if the show goes all Ross/Rachel, I'd probably move it from "must watch" to "eh." It adds so much, and there's so much comic potential for "fish out of water" both ways. Plus...it's just a feel-good thing.

Yeah. They're coming to the end of the third season. You figure the average hit sitcom runs what, seven-to-eight seasons? Get them back together and run with it. The nice thing about this show you have a lot of characters to play with it.

Danny 04-13-2010 02:19 PM

Hmm how did I miss something. Wasnt last night just an episode about Marshall getting monkey robbed?

DaddyTorgo 04-13-2010 02:27 PM

talking about Big Bang Theory...

Danny 04-13-2010 02:31 PM

ah, thought that might have been the case, but since I downloaded HIMYM, thought I might have missed something.

DaddyTorgo 04-13-2010 02:32 PM

It does...we're going to watch them shortly. Just a big difference between a 50" HD screen and a 17" computer screen.

DaddyTorgo 04-13-2010 06:33 PM

hehe yeah - that's why you need a "HDMI out" on your computer

DaddyTorgo 05-17-2010 08:34 PM

Okay - as a Leonard-Penny 'shipper, I'm dissapointed that it seems from the first few seconds of this episode that they're just sweeping the whole Leonard+Penny breakup under the rug. If I'm Leonard, the last person whose couch I want to sleep on is my ex-GF's.

DaddyTorgo 05-17-2010 08:54 PM

Why in fuck's name is he sitting there painting her toenails??

I guess they're just going with the "pretend they never dated unless we want to use it for comic potential." Dissapointing.

terpkristin 05-17-2010 09:00 PM

I dunno, having been exposed to my fair share of nerds (physics nerds, no less), I can attest that Leonard's actions are actually what I've seen that type do after a breakup. Not saying that they're going for realism, or that Penny's putting up with it makes any sense, but Leonard is actually dead-on for the stereotypical physics weenie I know.

I'll still give it a chance to see how it plays out.
