In April the Detroit hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .376 average with 41 hits, no home runs and 24 RBIs.

NL Selects Ames April's Best Starter

For the season, Baker is hitting at a .348 clip with 5 home runs, 99 RBIs and has scored 94 runs. He has 217 hits, 41 walks and a .391 on-base percentage.
Star of the Week Honored in AL
Monday, September 14th, 1908: Speak softly and carry a big stick and you could win the American League Player of the Week Award just like John Hummel.

He really dazzled on the diamond this week with a .552 average to take home the trophy. The Louisville left fielder went 16-29, drove in 8 runs, scored 3 times and hit no home runs.

This season Hummel is batting .296 with 175 hits, 8 home runs, 99 RBIs, .340 OBP and has scored 79 runs.
Mullin Toys with Cincinnati
Saturday, September 12th, 1908: In an outstanding outing, George Mullin tamed Cincinnati on a 5-hit shutout. The Boston hurler went the distance, finishing with 6 strikeouts and 2 walks in the 10-0 win.

"He had a lot of first pitch strikes and kept us off balance with a lot of off-speed stuff," according to the Cincinnati manager. "We just didn't get too many balls squared up today."

This season Mullin has registered 19 wins and 10 losses in 37 starts with a 3.94 ERA.

AL Awards Player of the Week Trophy

Merkle Belts Bunch of Base Hits
Wednesday, September 16th, 1908: It was a big day with the bat for Fred Merkle of the Philadelphia Phillies at South End Grounds III as he bashed out hit after hit after hit to defeat Boston 17-4.

After the game he said, "Guys, it's just one game in a long season. I hit it hard and found some holes today. 5 hits in 6 tries. But my hits are not the big thing in the game. The victory is the important thing. That's the story."

At the end of the game Merkle had collected 5 hits in 6 at-bats and a small mention in the record book. He was happy. He had a big day with the bat. And the Phillies had won.

F. Merkle singled in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 1st, grounded out in the 3rd, hit a two-run single in the 4th, singled in the 5th and singled in the 7th.

Thus far in 1908 Merkle is hitting .353 with 7 home runs, 93 RBIs, 143 runs scored and has compiled a .409 OBP.

Boston and Chicago have a magic number of #9 in the AL, Philadelphia has dim hopes of a playoff spot and Washington would need a near miracle.

In the NL, things are still extremely wide open with four teams vying for two spots with just a week to go in the season.

NL Batting Title Belongs to Lajoie
Thursday, October 1st, 1908: St. Louis Cardinals second baseman Nap Lajoie put the final touch on a fine season by winning the 1908 National League batting crown. The 34-year-old hitter was a pitcher's nightmare, hitting .383. Lajoie rapped out 271 hits in 708 at-bats with 64 doubles, 9 triples and 6 home runs. In addition, he played in 162 games, scored 129 runs and batted in 128.
Wagner Is AL Swing King
Thursday, October 1st, 1908: Batting titles are tough to come by. It takes a lot of talent, hard work, consistency, few slumps, good health and a little luck. Honus Wagner of the Chicago Whales put it all together this year and led the American League with a .381 batting average (272-714). The Whales shortstop played in 162 games, ending the season with 59 doubles, 7 triples, 13 home runs, 168 runs and 100 runs batted in. "When you work hard, good things happen," Wagner explained to reporters after winning the coveted award. "Slumps happen to everyone, but you won't break out of one without hard work. I think that's one of the prime reasons for my success this season."

buckinbranco 09-28-2009 11:46 AM

It's disappointing to finish under .500 but at least we were only 9.5 back of Cincinnati. Good luck to everyone in the playoffs.

Young Drachma 09-28-2009 11:48 AM

File is up, folks. Playoffs tomorrow night!

Montreal_GM 09-28-2009 12:40 PM

I knew the Redbirds wouldn't be in contention this year after failing to bring in suitable replacements for multiple FA's. The core of a good team is still here, so with a little luck in FA I might be back next year.

Congrats playoff teams.

Thanks DC.

cmldude 09-28-2009 03:50 PM

i was not expecting to be last in the NL. sure hope there is some good rookies in the draft pool this year!

We got off to a slow start, but slowly crept up throughout the season. Can't wait for the playoffs!

MattG 09-28-2009 07:56 PM

Another miserable season...we suck.

Good news is our #1 pick SP Ray Collins was 39-3 in AAA with 10 shutouts. Our AAA was 106-24...that's just funny!
