[Civ5] Interest in BMR Multiplayer? (Pitboss-like game)
I remember Pitboss for Civ 4. It enabled multiplayer at a slower pace, much like hotseat, only over the internet.
Civ 5, as of yet, does not have Pitboss, but some innovative people may have found something just as good. As BigSmooth posted on the Civ5 thread, Giant Multiplayer Robot, located here, enabled hotseat games to be played more effectively over the internet. Games can be timed, so if a player doesn't take their turn in 24 hours, the AI takes their turn for them so the next player can go. It effectively replaces PitBoss. The site was verified by the folks over at CivFanatics as legit, and you have to have a Steam account to participate (which you have to have anyway to play Civ 5). You can download the app, or just check the website (I think you're notified by email as well, when your turn is up). I gauging interest in a Gods and Kings game, maybe 5-7 players. Play a turn once every 24 hours. Nice, slow pace. Anyone interested? I can have a game set up in a jiffy! |
I'd probably be interested. I'm assuming it's relatively easy to set up?
Yup. Took me all of 5 minutes.
Here's the link to join the game:
The FOFC game! You'll have to sign into your Steam account to play, but otherwise it runs quite a bit like Pitboss. |
If there is a decent Gods&Kings sale over the next short bit, I'd be in. With any luck it will last longer than the time we tried to get Pitboss going with Civ 4, those just kind of died as the server kept going down.
Well, that was mostly due to me, since my computer at that time was less than reliable, and the server was on my computer that ran Pitboss.
With this, that's not an issue. It's much like PBeM, only with a consistant server presence by the Giant Multiplayer Robot. You even get email notifications by GMR when it's your turn. |
Got two players so far, need 5 more!
I'll play.
What kind of game are you thinking? Game speed, map size/type, etc. |

Open for debate. I'm a fan of longer games, but it's completely up to y'all. |
I mean if it's a turn per day and even a standard game is 500 turns, that's a long time. Standard is fine imo, I just don't know if epic or marathon would really be feasible.
We can even do a quick game to see how it goes.
Hey. Count me in. It says the game is private over on GMR, can't join. I usually really prefer longer games but we should probably go another route here.
3 players in, 4 more spots available.
I figure we can do Standard speed, Standard Earth map. |
I've been told that some people are getting an error message saying the game is private, so if you are interested in giving this a try, PM or post your Steam username and I'll directly invite you.
I got in no problem. Took Hiawatha.
4 players in. If no one else is interested, we can roll with 4 players. I'll give it until Sunday evening, then we can get rolling.
Game has been started! It's "Limelicker's" turn.
Make sure you put your email address in multiplayerrobot.com or download the app, and you'll be notified when your turn is. You can enter your email address by clicking on your Steam icon at the top left of the GMR website. |
Out of curiosity for future games... would I need the expansion or any DLC's to participate outside of of the GMR?
Nope. If the guy who makes the game decides he wants just vanilla Civ5, you can have that.
I can easily set up another GMR game for vanilla Civ 7 players if there's interest. You have to enable DLC's in GMR. It's defaulted to not allow them. |
Who has the Steam username Limelicker?
Signed up at GMR, don't have Gods and Kings yet, though.

I think you only have a few hours left before your turn is skipped and handled by the AI. Now odds are this won't matter since you and the AI would probably do the same thing, just found the capital where the settler is. But maybe you spawned in some tundra or something... |
Sorry, I didn't realized I needed to download something. I downloaded the app now. I'm assuming it will let me know when the save game comes through?
I received an email when it was my turn. Made my turn already. Anybody else get a crappy starting spot? Yikes, looks like i've got nothing but impassible mountains to my West.
On the top right of the screen, click on your Steam avatar (or if you don't have one, it'll show a big question mark). There, you'll have the option of entering your email address and even put in a password, so no one else can take your turn.
Even if you downloaded the app, it's still a good idea to put in a password. |

I set up both the e-mail and password and have the client downloaded. Should work a bit better this time. I'm assuming the person furthest to the left on the game listing is the one who's currently up to bat? |
I'm up right now. When I get home tonight after work, I'll take my turn.
You're up, Mizzou.

Got it. Had some issues where the game wasn't auto starting, but I got it working. Should be a bit quicker moving forward. :) |
I'll get to my turn in a couple hours.
Game is going well. Anyone found any ruins yet?
I can start a second game if there's any interest. The system runs really, really well. |
I"ve found 2 ruins. One with 60 gold and another with a free citizen. Good times so far.
Looks like WVUFAN surrendered already?
Maybe he got skipped five times or something.
If another one gets rolling, let me know, I'll jump in.
