2014-15 NFL Offseason Thread (Non Draft Edition)

So Black Monday is coming tomorrow.

So far we are pretty sure that the Jets and the 49ers are definitely looking for head coaches. If the score remains the same in the Georgia Dome, the Falcons, the Raiders, and the Bears could be looking as well.

BillJasper 12-28-2014 05:09 PM

I know Ross said Philbin is safe, but losing three out of the last four when the playoffs were in reach would have me re-evaluating that stand. If I was Ross.

BillJasper 12-28-2014 05:10 PM

I think Mike Smith and Rex Ryan could end up getting hired by other teams as head coaches after they are let go.

EagleFan 12-28-2014 05:12 PM

I have a strange feeling that Chip Kelly will be returning to college...

To who though? Maybe UCLA :)

A little late in their hiring cycle, isn't it?

If you were Ross, you probably would not have said he was safe:banghead:

Current rumor for the bears is everyone from Emery on down is fired. Ted Phillips managed to save his job which probably means he'll be a McCaskey pawn. I look for Phillips to try to appease the McCaskey's and go back to "bears football".

The bears are inching closer and closer toward Raiders territory.

EagleFan 12-28-2014 05:20 PM

My biggest concern with the hiring of him was that it seemed like he was only coming to the Eagles because of the issues that came to light. Seemed like a side step move.

Not saying that he is going, just that I have a funny feeling that he is,, or is seriously considering it.

Of course not. Because I would've fired Philbin after last years collapse!

I could see Rex Ryan ending up there.

While I'd welcome the hire, the Bears franchise has NEVER hired a HC or GM who has had previous NFL experience at the position.

miami_fan 12-28-2014 05:33 PM

Potential HC Candidates according to a couple of recent articles

Art Briles- HC Baylor
Rex Ryan- HC Jets
Teryl Austin- DC Lions
Kyle Shanahan- OC Browns
Josh Mc Daniels- OC Patriots
Todd Bowles- DC Cardinals
Hue Jackson - OC Bengals
Adam Gase- OC Broncos
Darrell Bevell- OC Seahawks
Bob Sutton- DC Chiefs

It would go a long way toward freeing up my Sundays.

BillJasper 12-28-2014 05:39 PM

Art Briles- HC Baylor: Just don't see him leaving Baylor.
Rex Ryan- HC Jets: Fired, would fit in Chicago or Atlanta, I think.
Teryl Austin- DC Lions: Think he needs more work.
Kyle Shanahan- OC Browns: Not a chance, Browns offense collapsed down the stretch.
Josh Mc Daniels- OC Patriots: Not sure where I see him fitting?
Todd Bowles- DC Cardinals: Niners or Atlanta?
Hue Jackson - OC Bengals: I think his attempted power play in Oakland will hurt his chances at another head coaching job.
Adam Gase- OC Broncos: Peyton Manning makes it tough to evaluate just how important he is to the Broncos success.
Darrell Bevell- OC Seahawks: Maybe Oakland?
Bob Sutton- DC Chiefs: Another I'm not sure where I see a fit?

I wonder if the luster has already worn off of Sumlin or will he get a look.

I imagine Washington will likely put out feelers for both Sumlin and Briles, quietly.

BillJasper 12-28-2014 06:11 PM

I wonder if Jeff Fisher might be the surprise firing of the year. 6-10 is nothing to hang your hat on in your third year.

Fun Fact: Jeff Fisher has 6 winning seasons in 20 years as a NFL head coach.

The Rams offense is fucking inept.

Warhammer 12-28-2014 06:46 PM

I don't think they get rid of him. QB out for the year, the team played hard throughout the year. A few plays here and there and they are looking at 10 wins.

People don't realize how bad the roster was before he came on board. That said, if there is not improvement next year, get rid of him.

No doubt they were awful before he was hired. His reputation doesn't come close to matching his career performance though. Shottenheimer needs to go. I think there's solid offensive talent there and the offense looks awful.

BillJasper 12-28-2014 06:58 PM

Tampa Bay is on the clock. Winston or Mariota?

Suicane75 12-28-2014 07:09 PM

Neither.

I wouldn't touch Winston at 1.1.

I would love to see Shotty go. They also need help on the OLine. I said it a few weeks ago, they remind me of the 98 squad. Poor record, but if they get a few pieces, they are a contender.

Neither would I. But the question seemed suitable as Tampa desperately needs a QB.

49ers and Harbaugh part ways.

If Winston gets his head together, he's an all-Pro right from the start.

A huge 'if' that could define Lovie Smith's tenure in Tampa.

stevew 12-28-2014 07:20 PM

That was some superb tank effort from Tampa today. If I were the management, however, I would have fired Lovie for winning today.

I really thought Smith would accomplish more in his first year in Tampa with the talent they had.

stevew 12-28-2014 07:28 PM

I would take Mariota because I feel like he's a safer bet to become an above average professional QB. Winston might have a much higher overall ceiling but I wouldn't want to roll the dice with him.

I don't think it'll matter if Lovie Smith doesn't bring his offense into the 1990's.

Which is why I think they'll go defense. No sense in drafting a franchise QB and giving him to Lovie. Leonard Williams?

miami_fan 12-28-2014 07:38 PM

Before the Bucs do anything, I would want to know what the hell happened this year with Jeff Tedford and how they plan to move forward after this? Tedford goes on an indefinite leave of absence to deal with heart issues, gets released from his contract the first week in December, and then two weeks later he is the head coach of the BC Lions. The team basically played the entire season without an OC.

I think they run the risk of making the fan base even more apathetic if they go back to McCown.

Just like every other Lovie Smith coached team.

I knew about the health issues with Tedford, but had no idea he took another job.

They pick at 2.1 right? They can trade up to get one, or maybe somebody falls to them.

But who? It seems after Mariota and Winston there is a definite step down in talent. I'm personally not sold on Brett Hundley from UCLA, who is mentioned as a possible first-rounder.

RedKingGold 12-28-2014 07:47 PM

I don't care who we (the 49ers) get, it will be a step down from Harbaugh.

I know it'll probably sound like poison, but I might chase Darrell Bevel from Seattle.

Seattle hate aside, I'm not sold on him. What is that offense if you take away Wilson and his improvising? I wouldn't mind Quinn, but if you look at Baalke's background, I wouldn't be surprised if its someone from the Parcells/Belicheck tree.

What is anyone's offense without a good QB? I think someone like Bevel might be good for Kaepernick.

He said he was following other opportunities when he gained his release. I think the problem was that with him being out so long that he lost influence over the team. Shit happens, but because he had a serious heart issue, I think everybody in Tampa gives him a free pass. I don't think any of it was ill-will.

I'm not either. But I believe they should do everything possible to help him succeed since they've hitched their wagon to him.

Not really, it's a year to year contract and he has some value. If they bring in an offensive guy who desires a more pro-style QB, it's not like they can't pull the trigger and move on. Their offense this season was pretty close to the Cody Pickett era.
