Monty Python Werewolf Game

Hi all,
Thanks to MrBug708 and Chief Rum, we discovered Werewolf over at the Mountain West Conference forums. We have a block of 10-15 or so players over there and need some more to fill out the game detailed below. Shooting for a weekend of May 16 start. If you are interested in taking a look it would be appreciated. I know you guys have done Python before, but this one’s different ☺ The game design is also subject to revision if anybody finds glaring errors in balance or consistency. Thanks!

Monty Python and the Holy Grail: Arthur Meets a Weremøøse (Truncated Version)

This is a 17 player game with changing locations, tradable items, one-time private messages, and in-game triggers.

Villagers and Powers
1. King Arthur: Elder (extra vote per day, 3 votes once per game) (I'm your king)
2. Sir Bedevere: Seer, Free “non-villain” scan day 0 (and that, my liege, is how we know the Earth to be banana-shaped)
3. Sir Galahad: Protector after Anthrax (dependent on Zoot), Mason with
Zoot, Self protector at Anthrax (Let me get back in there and face the peril)
4. Zoot: Protector before Anthrax (dependent on Galahad), Mason with
Galahad (Oooh. It is a lonely life ... bathing ... dressing ... undressing ... making exciting underwear....)
5. Minstrel: Annoyer, Possible cannibalism victim (and there was great rejoicing, yaaaayyyyyyy)
6. Sir Lancelot: His "idiom" allows him to escape a ynch and kill anyone instead once, Mason
with Patsy, 1-time any-time kill in specific location
7. Tim the Enchanter: Duke, Random incapacitator (disables one
random player for one day)
9. Sir Robin: Can bravely run away. Evade attack or lynch once
10. Sir Bors: Sacrifice self in place of other lynching (One rabbit stew, comin up!)
11. Sir Not appearing: Backup
12. Dingo: Cultist (There is going to be a spanking tonight!)
13. Herbert: Vanilla Villager, Messenger one-time one-way at certain location
14. Dennis The Constitutional Peasant: Vanilla Villager, Limited Elder if
revealed by Arthur's death (extra 2 votes first day, then 1 extra
next day, then back to vanilla) (Come see the violence inherent in the system!)
16. Patsy: Vanilla Villager, Mason with Lancelot (Message for you, Sir!)
17. Squires: Unnamed Vanilla Villagers

“Wolves” and Powers
1. Witch: Anti-seer (scans for seer each night), One-time incapacitator upon
death (disables target for one day) (She turned me into a newt!)
3. The Knight who says Ni!: Brutal wolf, except against Roger (twice) as he gets him a . . . shrubbery!
4. The Three-Headed Knight: Evil Elder when in Caves (3 votes, one for each
head)
5. The Black Knight: Survives first death (It's just a flesh wound)
6. Weremøøses, aka. Short Knights who say Ni!: Unnamed Vanilla Villains (A
Møøse once bit my sister...)

Miscellaneous
Each day the group moves to a new location (9 total) and different triggers can happen to certain characters.

There are 6 power items, some distributed at start and others by location triggers or PM. Certain items have different effects on different roles.

One-time messages can be sent by certain characters in certain situations, as well as through several coconuts randomly distributed throughout the game.

Most deaths will not result in reveals (no flip), unless it is part of the game mechanism or planned based on the role that dies.

CLICK ”Executively Modified Version” for complete details.
CLICK Game Thread to sign up

Lynch deadlines will be between 8 and 10pm pacific time depending on player preference and GM discretion with night actions due one hour later. If players don’t want to play over the weekend it is up to a majority vote, but I’m fine with continuing play through Sat/Sun.

*NOTE FOR ALL PLAYERS: Your choice of college "TEAM" in your MWC Board profile may have a role in the game, so please have a selection in your profile.

MrBug708 05-08-2015 09:07 PM

Come on guys!

Grover 05-09-2015 08:47 AM

Oh my god, yes.

IN!

edit: I guess I should read the thread and go sign up over there.

edit 2: I am operating as ChozoRuins over there.

Shoveler 05-09-2015 11:31 AM

to register you have to pick from a list of teams, but there aren't any good choices..

so confused..

lol no good choices (MWC site) - don't worry about it for now, I guess pick the least distasteful option? I'll see if Mugtang (the board owner) would add more and if not I'll get people's real team another way

Ziiggy 05-09-2015 11:52 AM

Mug says he'll add the rest of the FBS for that option by tomorrow.

A bunch of teams were added but I cant choose the right answer.. When I do I get some message about how it isn't formatted correctly.

Fixed

Looks like your setup can be broken by a massclaim.

Exactly what I'm looking for - issues that need addressed. Could you explain?

edit: googled it :) So, you're saying because there are so many unique characters, the village could just all reveal on the first day and by process of elimination win without really playing the game?

So to fix it I could make it a rule, banning early reveals, or cut out some of the unique characters and have more vanilla villagers/wolves? Or, would just saying to the group "you don't know who is in the game and who isn't" and not assigning some of them work?

fontisian 05-10-2015 03:59 PM

I dislike early reveals as an option, as it unfairly restricts the abilities of the village.

The witchhunt creator, Chocolate Pi, has spent years trying to address this type of issue in his games. Generally, there are three options:
1. A closed setup, with the rolenames either not being completely damning to the scum team or fake rolenames provided. There are flips on death.
2.A setup much like yours with something called soup. Soup allows either a member of the scum team or a third party to try to match roles to each players, killing them if they are right. The moment they guess wrong, the souping stops. You may make it so that the scum team has to give up their night kill for the night to soup or that they are revealed when they guess wrong. In this kind of setup, it's important to not have a flip on death, or the scumteam has too much information in endgame.
3.An open setup like yours, where all but a few roles are randomized between mafia and town. This is the closest to Witchhunt in its current form and what I recommend here. Every expect the seer (and maybe one other) will probably be able to prove that they have their role, but that doesn't make them town. Again, no flips on death are preferred, but the town should have a couple roles that can help them figure out what happened.

If you want to see that kind of setup done right, you can check this out: Chocolate Pi Games

Ziiggy 05-10-2015 04:21 PM

That site will be super helpful, thanks. Interesting about the angels and demons.

Are there games that combine #2 and #3? Say having a GM discretionary mechanism to allow limited souping if the GM thinks the game is going south? An artificial mechanism, but could still be fun.

Also, did you mean 'everyone except the seer (and maybe one other)...'?

Will you play?

This fits into what I was planning I think. Most deaths will not reveal roles, a few will, and a few will be hinted at.

fontisian 05-10-2015 04:37 PM

For a combination, the closest is the assassin role (which can be scum or town). I can tell you that in one game of Witchhunt where I played and the town assassin had the ability to do one soup on his death, the assassin getting cleared enough for a massclaim made it nearly impossible for my team to win. The mechanic was nerfed afterwards.

I dislike any mod balancing decisions based on the state of the game. Build balancing mechanics in before the game starts. Otherwise, interference will be perceived as mod bias.

In witchhunt, the priest (the seer equivalent) is called a holy role, and is guaranteed to be town, because it's so important to the town. A lot of the game depends on the witches successfully killing the priest early enough.

I'd suggest making flips a binary thing, if not for every role, then at least taking out the hints.

I probably won't play for two reasons:
1.I'm getting started on Daily Mafia (a video mafia streaming site) and I want to devote most of my attention to that for now.
2.New communities need time to work out the kinks. The discussions of whether to lynch before any kills (you should), when seers should claim, and all the fun mechanics stuff are things your community will have, and will be better off for them. I'll check it out in a few months and see where you are.

I watched the horse game on youtube.. assume you are fonti on that one.

I made it about... oh.... 1.5 minutes into that video before I was about to pull out my hair from so many people talking over each other.

Not sure about the web-cam based gaming.. I'd have to comb my hair... probably not gonna happen.

Sorry but I'm new to this and still picking up on the jargon. By binary do you mean reveals could show alignment or role but not both?

The horse game was a fun random one, with more than the normal amount of people. It gets a lot better in smaller games or when people die off.

I think you shouldn't make hints. Either make a reveal or do not.

Ziiggy 05-10-2015 07:45 PM

All right, no hints, thx. Gonna cut down on my use of movie clips :/

Will this wait for 22 or start with fewer? Either way, please keep dropping a line here every couple days so that I don't forget to check in once this gets underway!

Ziiggy 05-14-2015 10:33 PM

No I'll go ahead with however many there are. Roles will probably go out Sunday night.

Giddy up! Errr... Giiddy up!

Ziiggy 05-16-2015 09:30 PM

Question. When there's a "Cultist" role that character knows who the wolves are but the wolves don't know him and he wins with the wolves, right?

Does he count for the village winning condition, though, when alive?
