A UAB Dynasty (TCY)

UAB Sports Daily
Pre-Season 2004

Big news from the University of Alabama-Birmingham campus today: Young coach B.B. Gunn has been named as the new head coach of the UAB Blazer program. The Blazers are hoping that Gunn can bring some energy to a moribund program...

...the university held a press conference to introduce their new coach to the public yesterday.

"I'm excited to be here, and honored to be the head football coach at the University of Alabama in Birmingham," Gunn said.

"It is a big challenge, no doubt. The Blazers have won only 7 games once in a season so far. Plus, not only do we have to compete with Conference USA teams, but we have to compete with Alabama and Auburn as well for attention in this state. But I think there's a lot of talent in Alabama and in the South, and we can make this program a winner. That's my challenge."

(I'll let that be my introduction. This is my first dynasty here, and hopefully it'll last a long time. :) It's just too bad that TCY hasn't been updated... it's a great game. :( )

Coach's Diary
Pre-Season 2004

Okay, let's look at our coaching staff for 2004:

Defensive Coordinator
D.J. Shields, 47
Playcalling: Poor
Injury Avoid: Good
Rehab: Fair
Congeniality: Very Good

DL: Lousy
LB: Teriffic
DB: Good

Hmmm... playcalling could be better, and the DL is gonna be key to us becoming a dominant team. But he's still young - he might grow a little.

Offensive Coordinator
Harvey Bratzke, 42
Playcalling: Fair
Injury Avoid: Good
Rehab: Decent
Congeniality: Terrible

QB: Pretty Good
RB: Pretty Good
WR: Good
OL: Lousy
K: Poor

Great at developing the skill positions, and avoids injury. But that OL development rating is bad, and so is his congeniality. Might be one to keep an eye on, but if the offense does well this year, I'll keep him around.

Scouts
For a program like this, the scouts are all good. Our Deep South scout was graded a B+ and out Southeast scout an A-. Hopefully they'll help us out, as our recruiting is going to be limited to Alabama and the bordering states.

Coach's Diary
Pre-Season 2004

Now for the roster assessment:

My goodness... this team is BAD. Very bad. This could be a long year.

Our best overall position is RB, and I would give them a 32 out of 100, with a bit of room for improvement. Guards are next at 31, then TE with 28. Our WRs are horrible (15). Although I favor a high-octane passing attack, it looks like we'll go with a running formation on the offense this year.

On defense, our best position is OLB (25). DT, ILB and CB are not shabby (relatively speaking), but our safeties are atrocious (1)!

Based on this, we need a running game to have a ball-control offense, eat up game time and put the pressure on their offense, as well as keep the horrible defense off the field as much as possible. But I do want to give the fans a reason to watch us instead of Alabama and Auburn. So... how about the Wishbone? Yeah, that sounds good.

As for the defense, since our LBs are okay, let's go with a 3-4 formation. Hopefully the opposition won't pass all over us, or else we're dead.

bbgunn 08-23-2006 07:54 PM

More roster assessment...

QB
Skip Nolan (Sr.) will be our starter, but Rodney Naquin (So.) will probably be our starter next year (for the time being), so he may get some reps during this season.

RB/FB
Bobby Forbes (Sr.) has established himself as the starter in the past, and Moe Stewart (Jr) looks pretty good in camp. They'll probably be my two backs in the wishbone, with Patrick Bruce (Sr) as the starting FB. Forbes has the potential to be a class RB in C-USA if the breaks go his way.

As I look at the rest of this team... it makes me want to quit writing this assessment. I'll just list some key players:

G Tyrus Clanton (Sr.)
This guy, along with RBs Forbes and Stewart, is one of the 3 best athletes on the Blazer squad. He's going to be key to this running attack.

OLB Spenser Morgenstern (Jr.)
He's not that good yet, but has the potential to anchor the defense during the season.

UAB Sports Daily
Football Preview 2004

... Coach B.B. Gunn has decided to go "throwback" and install a Wishbone attack at UAB. This is vastly different from the pro-style offense that has been common in Birmingham since the beginning of the program.

Gunn says the Wishbone will take advantage of UAB's talented running backs, give the team's offense a different personality than most offenses out there, and bring fans to Legion Field. However, it remains to be seen whether or not the Wishbone will cause fans to turn from watching the Tide or Tigers...

...The Conference USA coaches have made their preseason predictions, and we bring you the results:

Conference USA 2004 - Predictions
Code:

1.  Louisville
2.  TCU
3.  Southern Miss
4.  Tulane
5.  East Carolina
6.  Memphis
7.  South Florida
8.  Cincinnati
9.  Houston
10. **UAB
11. Army

As you can see, the C-USA coaches do not have high hopes for the Blazers. In addition, the national coaches poll has UAB at #104. In comparison, Louisville is at #53 and TCU is at #54. Looks like a tough season is in store for UAB this fall.

Nationally, here's the preseason top 5 (coaches poll):
1. Michigan
2. Oklahoma
3. Miami (FL)
4. Florida State
5. Ohio State

Now let's take a look at the schedule:

Home Games in ALL CAPS
$$-Conference Games

UAB lucks out in not having to play pre-season C-USA favorite Louisville, and they get TCU at Legion Field. In conference, road games at Cincinnati, Tulane and So. Miss will be very difficult. No need to analyze the brutal road trip to Florida State in week 4.

Based on the way things are now, UAB Sports Daily predicts a 3-8 overall record and 2-6 in Conference USA. Blazer fans, the future looks good, but 2004 doesn't. Prepare yourselves.

In other news, perhaps reflecting what UAB has in store in 2004, only 13,100 season tickets have been sold this year, out of a stadium capacity of 83,100.

UAB Sports Daily
Week 1 - Recruiting Highlights

Target:
CB Bart Roberson
6'2", 176
Mobile, AL (Lillie B Williamson)

Roberson is the #3 ranked prospect in Alabama and the #1 CB. He is ranked #19 nationally at the CB position and could probably help UAB almost immediately. Experts say that his man-to-man coverage is excellent, but his ability to help cover the run is suspect.

Target:
QB Tommy Green
6'1", 180
Ellenwood, GA (Cedar Grove)

#2 QB in GA and #20 QB nationally. Great with most routine passes, but has a big option/running game as well. In 4 games at Cedar Grove HS, he's rushed for 137 yards/gm with 7 TDs. Could be an immediate factor in UAB's wishbone.

Week 2 - Recruiting Highlights

Target:
FB Percy Schulz
6-1, 219
Dallas, GA (East Paulding)

#4 FB in GA. Not a great power back, but can get the extra yardage when needed. His HS coaches commend his great attitude.

Updates
CB Roberson - considering UAB, Georgia Tech and Iowa. Roberson places value on close distance and great academics. UAB is the closest of the three, but academics stink currently. Will Roberson stay in-state?
QB Green - considering UAB, Utah. Green wants a team with prestige and close distance to GA. UAB meets the distance requirement, but is it enough?

Week 2 - Preview

Baylor (0-0) at UAB (0-0)

Line: UAB by 3
Weather: 58 degrees, rainy
TV: none

UAB will debut their wishbone attack against the high-octane run-and-shoot offense of the Baylor Bears. This will be the first game for both teams.

UAB is favored to win in this matchup. However, Baylor is regarded by many to have more talent, and the run-and-shoot may prove to be problematic for UAB's horrible secondary. Our prediction: Baylor 42, UAB 21.

Week 2 - Review
UAB 24, Baylor 13

BIRMINGHAM - Three different UAB backs scored a touchdown as the UAB Blazers defeated the Baylor Bears 24-13 in Week 2 action.

After trailing 13-3 going into the 4th quarter, the Blazers shocked and delighted those fans remaining at Legion Field with a great comeback.
After a TD run by RB Gilbert Adachi, starting QB Skip Nolan put the Blazers ahead with a 1-yard TD run with 1:01 remaining. Then, with 8 seconds to go, RB Bobby Forbes added another TD to solidify the Blazers' win.

UAB starts the 2004 season 1-0, winning a game they had to win in order to have any kind of chance this season for a postseason berth.

The player of the game was UAB G Tyrus Clanton. With 8 blocks made out of 12, he was key to UAB's running game today. Forbes had 114 yards on 22 carries, while RB Moe Stewart had 87 yards on 16 carries.

UAB Sports Daily
Week 3

The Blazers have week 3 off, which gives them a chance to reflect on their victory last Saturday against Baylor, and to get extra preparation for the brutal trip to Tallahassee to face Florida State next week.

The wishbone offense had a great debut at Legion Field in week 2, amassing 233 yards net rushing and 3 TDs. However, UAB Sports Daily wondered if another goal of the wishbone – to attract fans to UAB that would otherwise watch Alabama or Auburn – was on its way to being achieved. We were at the Baylor game and we asked many of the 26,000-plus that showed up what they thought.

“It’s kind of interesting,” said one fan. “My father grew up cheering for a lot of teams that ran the wishbone. It’s nice to see that here in Birmingham, especially when so many college teams are starting to throw the ball more.”

“I love UAB football,” said another fan, “so I’ll support them no matter what. But I hate the wishbone. I was hoping to see them run some kind of air attack.”

Another fan said, “I’m an Alabama fan, so I probably shouldn’t be here. You know what they say – UAB means ‘U Ain’t Bama’. But… I had to see this. Where else do they run the wishbone now? Some school in Texas?”

Week 4 - Preview
#47 UAB (1-0) at Florida State (0-1)

Line: Florida State by 8
Weather: 75 degrees, sunny
TV: None

The Blazers, who surprisingly made the Coaches Poll at number 47 during their off week, take on Florida State on Saturday in Tallahassee, FL. FSU started their season in Week 2 with a loss to rivals Miami (FL) 33-30, while UAB won its opener. However, FSU should get back on the right track with a game against a team that has considerably less talent.

The game will feature two contrasting running styles: UAB's wishbone versus FSU's outside running veer formation.

Our prediction: FSU 45, UAB 3.

Week 4 - Recap
Florida State 42, #47 UAB 10

TALLAHASSEE, FL - Florida State had no problem with the UAB Blazers, trouncing them 42-10.

The Seminoles had a big first quarter, scoring TDs on its first 3 possessions. Then their defense did the rest. FSU dismantled UAB's wishbone attack, holding the Blazers to just 11 yards rushing. All in all, it was a pretty bad beatdown for UAB.

Week 5 Injuries

WR Darrell Peters - Arthroscopic Knee Surgery (Out, 4 wks)
DE Sean Lazetti - Torn Thumb Ligaments (Questionable, 4 wks)

(COACH'S NOTE: The Lazetti injury hurts us more... we can't afford to lose depth on our defensive line.)

Week 5 Recruiting Notes

QB Tommy Green out of GA was getting much love from more prestigious schools, so we made the painful decision to throw in the towel on him. Our next QB options are... well, not so great.

In fact, overall our recruiting efforts have been quite disappointing. These high schoolers still don't know what "UAB" is, much less come to Birmingham and play. This is going to be a long fall off the field. Hopefully it won't be one on it.

Week 6 Preview
UAB (2-1) at Cincinnati (0-4)

Coaches Poll: UAB #66, Cincinnati #111

Line: UAB by 20
Weather: 56 degrees, stormy
TV: none

Fresh off their first C-USA victory of the season, UAB makes their first C-USA road trip. They'll play the Cincinnati Bearcats on Saturday.

UC runs a run-and-shoot, but they certainly haven't had much success with it this year, getting blown out by Ohio State, Miami (OH), Syracuse and East Carolina. With UAB doing well against passing offenses so far this year, and with UC not having much of a defense, this should be UAB's third win of the year.

Our prediction: UAB 35, Cincinnati 17.

Week 6 - Recap
UAB 34, Cincinnati 24

CINCINNATI - UAB dominated the second quarter with 20 points, then held off a fourth quarter comeback effort by Cincinnati to win their second straight game.

The Blazers' two starting tailbacks, Bobby Forbes and Moe Stewart, dominated the game. Forbes ran for 96 yards while Stewart had 99. Each back contributed 1 TD. Forbes was named the Player of the Game. QB Skip Nolan went 15 of 25 in the air for 142 yards and 2 TDs.

"Great game," UAB coach B.B. Gunn said afterwards. "You couldn't ask for a better performance from our backs. And what Skip is doing - not causing any turnovers - is phenomenal."

This is the third game out of four that UAB did not commit any turnovers. They have only one on the season, a pick in the Memphis game last week.

Cincinnati's QB Vincent Montanez was the bright spot for his team, passing for almost 300 yards on UAB's weak secondary, including 3 TDs, one of them an 82-yard bomb in the 4th quarter. However, Montanez also threw 2 crucial interceptions that possibly prevented the Bearcats (0-5) from staying in the game.

UAB improves to 3-1 overall, their best mark in a few years. They are 2-0 in C-USA.

(I decided to stop posting the Box Scores so that you guys don't have to scroll so much. If you want to know some stats, let me know.)

Coach's Diary after Week 6

3-1... not bad, better than I thought. Of course, the next two games against Mississippi State and TCU are gonna be tough.

Our wishbone attack is second only to TCU in rushing. We're getting 178 yards a game. Not bad, but I'd like to see more. Meanwhile, our rush defense is superb, but, as expected, the pass defense is horrible - one of the worst in the nation. That's gotta change if we're gonna be great.

Week 7 - Preview
UAB (3-1) at Mississippi State (2-2)

Coaches Poll: UAB #60, MSU #67

Line: UAB by 2
Weather: 73 degrees, sunny

UAB takes its wishbone attack to an SEC stadium as they face the Bulldogs. MSU was blown out 70-7 by LSU two weeks ago, but won a close one against Vandy in Week 6.

MSU has not looked good lately, and UAB is favored by 2. But the Bulldogs are an SEC team, and UAB's at their stadium. Our prediction: MSU 31, UAB 27.

Yeah, I'm a bit surprised. I was thinking about going with a passing attack next season, but we might have to stick with the wishbone for now. :)

Week 7 Recap

UAB 24, Mississippi State 14

STARKVILLE, MS - Star RB Bobby Forbes ran for 2 touchdowns, and UAB put up 230 rushing yards on an SEC defense, as the Blazers defeated the Mississippi State Bulldogs on the road.

The game didn't have much offense at all, as the halftime score was 0-0. Then in the 3rd quarter, UAB (4-1) opened things up with a field goal and Forbes first TD. MSU (2-3) tried to come back in the 4th quarter, but UAB put up more points to keep the game out of reach and the win in their hands.

The player of the game, for the 2nd time this year, was UAB senior C Vernon Jordan, who created several key blocks for his running backs all game. QB Skip Nolan didn't have a great game in the air, but he certainly helped things by having a great game on the ground, rushing for 56 yards and helping to fill in for an ineffective RB Moe Stewart.

UAB now has a 3-game winning streak going. Their rushing offense is now ranked 16th in the nation, and in C-USA only TCU (who the Blazers play next week) have more rushing yards.

Louisville and TCU had the week off, and Tulane impressed by beating East Carolina 12-7.

As you can see, we are definitely (and surprisingly) keeping up with the Joneses, i.e. Louisville and TCU. It's too bad we don't play Louisville this year, but we have TCU next week. We have to be ready for that.

Coach's Notes - Week 7

Injuries

Starting senior T Mo Gomez will be doubtful for 4 weeks with a pulled groin. We certainly don't need that; tackle is one of our weakest positions.

Recruiting

We finally had our first commitment of the year:

S Jose Dole
5-11, 175
Columbus, GA (Carver)
Rating: 37-

He's the #4 S in GA. He's great at picking off passes (11 INTs in 9 games so far). But his man-to-man defense is suspect. Still, we need any help at safety we can get, and he'll play a role in the future.

Week 8 Preview - UAB Sports Daily

#34 TCU (4-1) at UAB (4-1)
Coaches Poll: UAB is #51
Line: UAB by 9 (wow)
Weather: 52 degrees, rainy
TV: TV4

Since UAB doesn't play Louisville this year, this is easily the biggest C-USA game of the season for the Blazers. The TCU Horned Frogs come to Legion Field on Saturday in a regionally-televised game.

Both of these teams are sitting in 2nd place in C-USA, 1/2 game behind Louisville. The winner of this game will most likely challenge Louisville for the conference championship.

The game features the top two rushing attacks in C-USA. UAB runs the wishbone, while TCU runs the veer formation.

This is a must win game for the Blazers if they want to be considered as serious contenders in Conference USA. Here at UAB Sports Daily, we know we've been hard on the Blazers. The result has been a 2-3 record in predicting UAB games. We're going to side with the line here (which has UAB favored by 9). Our prediction: UAB 28, TCU 21.

Week 8 Review

#34 TCU 38, UAB 6

BIRMINGHAM - Looks like UAB isn't ready for prime time just yet.

The TCU Horned Frog defense held UAB to just 55 rushing yards while putting up 198 of their own, as UAB was outclassed in just about every aspect of the game. UAB was held without a touchdown for the first time this year, its only points coming off of two Blake Kerr field goals in the afternoon rain.

UAB RB Bobby Forbes was held to just 42 yards. QB Skip Nolan couldn't rescue the team through the air, completing less than half his passes and throwing one pick.

"It was a complete beatdown, plain and simple," said coach B.B. Gunn after the game. "We made a few mistakes, but they were just better than us this afternoon."

UAB falls to third place in C-USA, tied with Memphis and Southern Miss, while TCU rises to a first-place tie with Louisville.

Week 8 - News and Notes

Injuries

DE Lazetti and WR Peters are questionable 1 more week, and T Gomez is questionable 3 more weeks. All 3 are playing through the pain.

NEW: DE Fred Talley is out for 8 weeks with torn knee cartilage, hurting our weak DE depth even more. This doesn't help us.

Recruiting
We have another new commitment:

OLB Luther Wheeler

McCalla, AL (McAdory)
Rating: 29+

#3 OLB in Alabama. Probably not going to be a stud, as his run defense is terrible. Might be a good backup for us down the road.

UAB's next test is this Saturday as they travel to New Orleans to face Tulane.

UAB's task is to not let the heartbreaker against TCU affect them and stay on course for a winning season. However, Tulane will do their best to wreak havoc on the Blazers. The Green Wave have been surpisingly effective at running the ball. However, they haven't scored many points at all, gaining more than 20 points twice all year.

Our prediction: UAB 23, Tulane 17.

UAB (5-2) picked up 176 yards rushing, 103 of those from Forbes. The Blazers dominated the first 3 quarters of the game, leading 20-3 going into the 4th. Tulane (3-4) had a decent 4th quarter, but didn't do much at all to come back.

Week 9 - News and Notes

Injuries

PREVIOUS: Talley, Gomez
NEW: RB Moe Stewart is out 4 weeks with a hyperextended elbow. He was ineffective anyway. DT Zack Newsome is out 9 weeks with knee surgery and DT Kerry Leatherman is probable 5 weeks with bruised ribs.

Recruting
We had a lot of commitments this week. The top ones are:

S Brenden Springer
5-11, 183
Kinston, AL
Rating: 57++

We needed big help at safety, and we got it. #2 safety in Alabama. Great at interceptions. He'll probably start for us at least 3 years. Both our S recruits this year will help out a lot.

C Dale Peachey
6-3, 256
Sparta, TN (White County)
Rating: 64--

#3 center in Tennessee. Wanted to go far away for college, but we convinced him to come to Birmingham. Great at run blocking. Not so great at pass protection, but we don't pass that much anyway. May be an adequate C to replace senior Vernon Jordan.

OTHER COMMITMENTS:
DE Michael Davila (FL, 57-)
FB Percy Schulz (GA, 56+)
G Everett Lerner (GA, 34+)
DT Dominic Stowe (AL, 31+)
RB Luther Schneider (GA, 19-) - the RB situation in our area is terrible

Week 11 Preview - UAB Sports Daily

South Florida (1-6) at UAB (5-2)
Coaches Poll: UAB #53, South Florida #108
Line: UAB by 17
Weather: 73 degrees, sunny
TV: none

UAB takes the field against one of the weaker C-USA teams, the South Florida Bulls, Saturday night at Legion Field. A win here would clinch a winning season in B.B. Gunn's first season as head coach and make the Blazers bowl-eligible.

This is definitely not a game that UAB should overlook. The Bulls run a veer running formation, which spells trouble for the Blazers' depleted defensive tackle ranks. However, UAB should have enough on defense to cause trouble to the Bulls' offense.

Our prediction: UAB 30, South Florida 21.

Izulde 08-29-2006 05:44 PM

Man, TCU is kicking some serious ass.

Reminds me of how they shredded the MWC IRL this year.

Week 11 Recap - UAB Sports Daily

South Florida 31, UAB 23

BIRMINGHAM - After shocking people all season long, the Blazers were given a big shock as they lost to the lowly South Florida Bulls on Saturday night.

UAB's wishbone offense was effectively shut down for the first three quarters of the game, while the Bulls' rushing offense had success in the first half. The score was 21-9 South Florida going into the fourth.

UAB got back in the game in the fourth quarter, mainly due to the arm of QB Skip Nolan, who threw 2 TDs to WR Darrell Peters. However, South Florida was able to answer UAB's moves and hold on for the upset.

"Ridiculous," said coach B.B. Gunn after the game. "When the hallmark of your game is rushing, and you don't get any rushing, you lose."

Recruiting

A very big commitment today:

CB Bart Roberson
6-2, 176
Mobile, AL (Lillie B Williamson)
Rating: 90-

Whoo-hoo! This was our number one prospect, and he signed! #3 overall prospect in Alabama, #1 CB. Perhaps UAB's biggest signing ever. He's tall and can really grab those picks. The scouting report says his weakness is run defense, but he had 4.5 sacks this year in high school. Also, we should keep an eye on his attitude; he's an attention-seeker. But if all goes well, he'll be one of the best defensive players in Division I-A.

Other commitments:
QB Deron Cox (AL, 31-)
T Marlon Coates (AL, 15+) - the tackle situation is weak in our area, too. I may have to relax our recruiting limits a little next year.
