So, how long have you been married?

Today I'm celebrating my 10th wedding anniversary. Yes, we got married on April Fool's Day. Thought I'd put up a poll just to check to see how my marital bliss measured up against other people.

path12 04-01-2010 10:29 AM

Welp. 10 years beats my two marriages combined.

If the third one doesn't work I'm done.

saldana 04-01-2010 10:34 AM

it will be 9 this May for me.

Coming up on 5 in October and still enjoying every minute of it.

19 the first time and while I have no regrets, I wish I could make the first marriage 5 and my current one 19 :)

BYU 14 04-01-2010 11:10 AM

Dola, am interested in how many have been married more than once and if that first marriage has made you a better husband/wife to your current spouse?

A resounding yes for me....I had no business getting married when I did the first time and I enjoy the whole concept so much more this time around.

RendeR 04-01-2010 11:18 AM

FIrst marriage lasted 7 years, ended horribly.

This one is about to hit 7 Married and is over 13 altogether. Much better this time round.

It's going to be 5 for my wife and I this July. After I mentioned that this past winter to a friend of mine, he just started glancing back and forth between the two of us and said "no" a couple of times in disbelief. I think it was a bit of "wait, it can't have been that long ago, can it?"

Oddly (or not), I met my future wife 1 month before joining the board, and I started dating her 2 months after joining the board (we met on 9/11).

Yeah, I've only been married once, but I'm like you in that I dated my wife for 6 years before we got married. Her parents didn't want her getting married until she was through with residency, which was fine by me. So we've been together 16 overall.

This is my second marriage (her first), and we will be celebrating 15 years later on this year. As for whether it's made me a better husband, I would tend to say yes. I think I am much more appreciative of what it takes to be in a true relationship/marriage. My communication is much better. I think I've taken what I learned about myself in my first marriage and applied it successfully so far in this one.

My first marriage, my wife's 2nd, hitting 10 years in December, been together for 11.

This will be my only marriage, so I hope it works. It looks good so far. I think the 2nd half has been much better than the first for sure.

Marc Vaughan 04-01-2010 11:51 AM

Somewhere over 10 years and below 15 ... can't remember exactly, my wife's as bad as I am at remembering - put it this way we celebrated our 10 year anniversary twice ;)

chesapeake 04-01-2010 11:55 AM

My wife and I have our 9th anniversary on April 15th. We'll have been together for 17 years in October. It is the only marriage for both of us.

This is epic.

I just reached 6 years last month. My wife and I have been together for 11 years, though. After our third or fourth year together, our relationship kinda went like this until the wedding:

Her: Time to get married!
Me: What? Already?
Her: Well, we are going to get married, right? :p
Me: Yeah, I guess.
Her: What does that mean?
Me: It means we're going to get married. (I was usually eating popcorn at the time)
Her: Time to get married!
Me: Already? :)
Her: :banghead:

hehe, we're not much better. This year, we went to bed a little past midnight on the eve of our anniversary so my wife wished me a happy 12th anniversary and we kissed goodnight.

It was only the next morning that I remembered that she was 6 months pregnant with Andrew when we got married and that Andrew was to turn 13 in March this year, so it was indeed our 13th anniversary. oops... :)

Another funny story is that often tell people that while we're Canadian, we were forced by the American government to get married. At the time, I was getting ready to work in the States under a work visa that required us to be married if she wanted to live with me in the Sattes for more than 180 days in the year. So we got married despite not really having any plans to do so. :)

It's probably because she spends so much time lurking it's like she's never around.

I'm surprised we have so many married for so long. I am at 2.5 years and very happy. No small feat for a former commitmentphobe.

I'd say yeah. Was 21 the first time and just way not ready. 35 for the second one and I thought overall I did much better -- though she dumped me for another guy so I guess that could be a sign that I didn't.......

Generally, I believe failed relationships give you great insight into what makes a successful one. I have huge respect for those who maintain long term relationships and my family is part of that group: parents married 48 years, both brothers married over 15 years to their high school sweethearts.

cubboyroy1826 04-01-2010 03:35 PM

18 years as of this Sunday. Best decision I ever made.
