Best Mel Brooks Movie

Which of these Mel Brooks movies do you enjoy the most?

condors 06-12-2003 08:12 AM

i voted for history of the world part I

very tough call spaceballs, and blazzing saddles are movies i could have voted for as well

oykib 06-12-2003 08:13 AM

"It's good to be the king."

Fritz 06-12-2003 08:16 AM

I left out a few, like the Nude Bomb. If you like one of those best you deserve a trout in the rectum.

KWhit 06-12-2003 08:17 AM

I voted for Blazing Saddles, but I love the Producers as well. Gene Wilder is one of the funniest people ever.

FYI - Wilder actually wrote Young Frankenstien (although ultimately share writing credits with Brooks for some additional material, but it was mostly Wilder's script). Of course, Brooks did direct it.

Coffee Warlord 06-12-2003 08:35 AM

Spaceballs. Definatly Spaceballs.

Samdari 06-12-2003 08:36 AM

You left out

"Mel Brooks is not funny. They are all crap."

Fritz 06-12-2003 09:43 AM

Trout in the Rectum for Samdari. I think the fish might have company.

We'll put you down for "I had my sense of humor surgically removed."

;)

Craptacular 06-12-2003 09:46 AM

Spaceballs, although HotW is a very close runner-up.

KWhit 06-12-2003 09:47 AM

I wish I would have voted for The Producers now. It's getting no love whatsoever!

Speaking of Wilder, Silver Streak was on FMC last night...I was preoccupied with the no-hitter though.

Spaceballs is the one I remember the best, considering the year it came out. I may have to lean to Blazing Saddles or HOTW though. Which one....

cuervo wishes less people would misspell 'definitely'....cuervo has seen it too many times in the last couple of days....cuervo doesn't mean to offend Coffee Warlord....

I have not voted yet, and am torn between the first 3.

KWhit wishes less people would refer to themselves in the third person....KWhit has seen it too many times in the last couple of days....KWhit doesn't mean to offend cuervo.

Those are "definatly" (that's for cuervo) my top 3 as well.

I imagine people's age has a lot to do with the # of Spaceball votes there are. To the young guys, The Producers and to a lesser extent BS and YF look quite dated.

cuervo72 06-12-2003 10:09 AM

Rickey Henderson is cuervo's hero :)

Seriously, when I was thinking it, I was thinking it in the Costanza voice....(George is getting upset! They're killing independent George!)

GrantDawg 06-12-2003 10:29 AM

Grantdawg thinks people voting for anything else definitaly ought to watch "Blazing Saddles" again.

54 Bravo 10 06-12-2003 11:24 AM

Gotta vote for Men In Tights .

If you find Mel Brooks funny, I'll put you down for, "I had my intellect removed." ;)

BFleming 06-12-2003 11:33 AM

And what year did Brooks do "I have a trout in my rectum"??

;)

Calis 06-12-2003 11:53 AM

Blazing Saddles easily gets my vote.

Kodos 06-12-2003 12:36 PM

History of the World!

"Pissboy, here's your tip." *ploink*

Franklinnoble 06-12-2003 12:47 PM

You left out "Life Stinks"

Fritz 06-12-2003 12:48 PM

trout in the rectum for Franlinnoble. bet he likes it

Marmel 06-12-2003 12:58 PM

Fritz, you left your extra large trout at Quiksand's place the other night. He said he is done with it for now.

But, hey... go ahead and leave that trout in my rectum, Fritz... I hear it helps prevent hemorrhoids .

Fritz 06-12-2003 01:00 PM

Marm, most folks use disposable trout now. The reusable ones are just so messy.

Marmel 06-12-2003 01:02 PM

I was under the assumption that messy=good.

Fritz 06-12-2003 01:13 PM

You obviously don't recall the old rhyme "Messy trout will stain your grout." Who wants splotchy grout?

Hedley Lamarr: That's not much of a crime.

For many a year I would have chosen Blazing Saddles but I voted with Young Frankenstein. It just ages better for some reason. I guess partially because it was far less over the top and also it really very closely mirrored the classic Frankenstein film that it parodies. In any case, it gets my vote for sure.

Neuqua 06-12-2003 05:06 PM

I really gotta start watching more Mel Brooks films. My alltime favorite has to be Spaceballs though, only because I'm such a Star Wars geek and to portray big menacing Vader as little Rick Moranis gave me laughs to this day.

"I'm my own best friend."

WussGawd 06-12-2003 07:36 PM

The current Broadway musical notwithstanding, the Producers. It launched the career of Gene Wilder and Mel Brooks as a writer/director. It won the 1967 Oscar for Best Screenplay, and it was a work of sheer genius.

Besides, how could you not vote for a movie bold enough to do a full Busby Berkely production number called "Springtime for Hitler?"

That being said, Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein were wonderful sendups of their genres, gothic horror films and westerns.

The other wonderful thing about Mel Brooks' early works was that they were some of the few films my parents took me to at a young age that weren't G rated. :)

Anyone else find it funny that as of now, Men In Tights still has no votes?

Spaceballs is the way to go. I'm sorry that Men in Tights has to be up against these, because I really enjoyed the movie. But compared with Blazing Saddles and Spaceballs, it's no contest. Perhaps I should go watch History of the World again...I don't seem to remember liking it as much as the others.

How did I get into the middle of this, exactly?

Sharpieman 06-12-2003 08:41 PM

I loved Blazing Saddles and History of the World, but I couldn't get past Young Frank. That movie is a classic of classics.

oykib 06-12-2003 08:59 PM

HoTW edged our Blazing Saddles and YF for me. History has aged well-- better than YF and much better than Blazing Saddles. Blazing Saddles was probably the best of these at release, though.

Spaceballs was pretty good. But it's not a classic. It's not much better than Men in Tights IMO.

Radii 06-12-2003 09:16 PM

I found Blazing Saddles thoroughly average and Spaceballs was only slightly better. I actually love Men in Tights, but History of the World was a very easy choice for me.

I think the stars of Spaceballs has to count against it...I mean, Bill Pullman and Daphne Zuniga? Ok, Rick Moranis and John Candy are at least comedians/comic actors...but Pullman and Zuniga? Certainly can't compete with Wilder, that's for sure. And the triumverate of pseudo celebs Joan Rivers, JM J Buttocks and Dick Van Patten....yet I still love the movie.

That and the fact it was from 1987. For me, nothing from 1987 can really be a classic yet, it is still too fresh in my memory (dating myself again).

tucker342 06-12-2003 10:41 PM

Tough choice between Spaceballs and Blazing Saddles, but I choose Blazing Saddles.
