Cheerleader walks onto Southern Miss Football Team.. expected to make cut.

It's common for a player to go from standing on the sideline one season to playing a key role the next. Southern Miss' Adam Kelly is doing that - but in a roundabout way: He's going from cheerleader to long snapper. He will be an invited walk-on this season and is expected to win the long-snapping job. He was a long snapper in junior college.

Wow, is Southern Miss really that bad? That a cheerleader would be able to make the team...

TroyF 06-28-2003 12:12 PM

Some of those cheerleaders are pretty good athletes. I don't think it's surprising one could make the team.

Who would name their daughter Adam?

Blade6119 06-28-2003 07:34 PM

its a boy...a male cheerleader b & b

daedalus 06-28-2003 10:05 PM

I'm going to guess that B & B caught the whole "he's a boy" thing from the "he" in the article and was making a joke. But y'never know.

I agree with Troy, some of those folks seems pretty damn athletic. That'll be kind of a cool story.

Well he was a long snapper in junior college (or "high school with ash trays", whichever term you prefer) which means he probably can't be that bad, though I'll bet he's no Mike Morris.

seeing as this is the truly enlightened, wonderfully informed, beautifully open-minded, totally non-jock and in no way homophobic world of college football, i hope this team mates don't crucify him for having been a cheerleader.

I was hoping for something out of Unnecessary Roughness.. (except that was a soccer player and not a cheerleader.. but anyhows)

44Niners 06-29-2003 01:03 PM

I am going to teach all my sons to be long snappers (and not cheerleaders)

it is skill that is always in demand - consider the 49ers long snapper makes $800,000 a year and DOESN"T PLAY ANY OTHER POSISTION. Thats right folks - 800,000 dollars for long snapping.

CHEMICAL SOLDIER 06-29-2003 09:59 PM

Wow! For being on the field anout 10 minutes the whole season a whopping 800K!
And Here I am sweating out in the field !

Why does everyone always call it Unnecessary Roughness. The movie is titled NECESSARY Roughness. Geez...

Sorry, but that's one of UNT's main claims to fame (the movie was filmed on campus here)...

Its ok. :) I used to have friends that lived in Denton when I worked in Irving. I thought the claim to fame there though was Mean joe greene? :)

Long snapper is to NFL what LH relief specialist is to MLB.

Not much work, always in need, and a great job if you can get it.

Well, yeah, that's our other claim to fame. Football wise, at least. There have been a ton of famous musicians who went to school here...

Dola-

UTEP has a female kicker on it's team this year. She was one of the best players on our soccer team, and during the spring the soccer team was practicing on the Sun Bowl turf when some of the girls decided to try field goals. Holly Cohen started nailing them, and some of the football coaches were impressed. They invited her to spring practice and she did really well (our incumbent kicker was out getting some sort of nasal tumor removed).

It sounds like the Miners are going to try and get her into a game so that she can be the first female to score in an NCAA football game. The weird thing is that it her ex-boyfriend is a defensive lineman for Arizona, our opening day opponent (and her current boyfriend is on the UTEP football team). Should be interesting to see how he reacts if the Miners put her in to kick against his defense...
