Official apologizes for skirt remark

July 6, 2003

NILES -- A Niles Township High School District 219 board member says he's sorry for telling people at a recent committee meeting "to keep your comments like a woman's skirt: long enough to cover the subject, but brief enough to keep me interested."

But Timothy Knudsen insists those who criticized him were motivated more by differences over administrative and budget issues than by offended sensibilities.

"I feel like if I had said the Earth was round, I'd have been accused of insulting the Flat Earth Society," Knudsen said.

Knudsen acknowledges that he made the comment during the board's Finance Committee meeting June 23. Other board members let him have it Monday at their regular meeting.

"The kind of comments Mr. Knudsen made are not appropriate," board member Lynda Gault Smith said in a telephone interview. "They were humiliating. They were degrading. And they could, in my mind, constitute a hostile work environment, and, most definitely, sexual harassment."

Knudsen read an apology during the meeting, saying, "If anybody was offended, they have my apology, and it certainly won't happen again."

I'm sorry. Should we all switch to MACs?

Are they sure they didn't mean Lynda Galt Smith?

Franklinnoble 07-07-2003 02:47 PM

Hey, I got banned for jacking a "serious" thread with gay jokes (granted, they were a tad vulgar)... political correctness has infected pretty much every means of expression these days.

Oh, and I'm not whining about getting banned... I'll be the first to admit I had it coming... but had the thread been a serious discussion of the Cincinnati Bengals' chances at making the playoffs this season, and someone had jacked it with all manner of "Bungles" remarks, I doubt they'd have been sent to the penalty box for it.

Just my two cents...

JeeberD 07-07-2003 02:56 PM

Mmmmmmmmmmmmm....short skirts......

CamEdwards 07-07-2003 05:37 PM

There's a website called Tongue Tied that has great stories of political correctness. The guy does a column once a week for Fox News, but he updates his blog every day. It's always funny/sad to see how PC we've become.

No trolling there. Or was that to add content to the thread?

Blackie, when did someone replace your balls with ovaries?

Just wondering. :)

Frankly, what the hell is your problem?

The "wah wah wah" is directed to the PC idiots who didn't like the skirt comment.

CamEdwards 07-07-2003 08:06 PM

ohhhh... "wah wah wah" can be interpreted in so many different ways.

Sorry for the ovaries crack. :)

Blackadar 07-07-2003 08:09 PM

Cam, you should know better than to think I'm that PC.

Don't you just want to call that woman up and say, "Hey, good job on forcing Mr. Knudsen to apologize. By the way, your ass looks fantastic in that skirt your wearing today. I mean, really. I could just stare at those cheeks for hours. Are you even wearing panties?"

Sounds like something you should do tomorrow on your radio show, Cam. ;)

I'm having too much fun screwing with the NEA right now... but maybe I can segueway into this somehow.

mckerney 07-07-2003 08:34 PM

That's not sexual harrasment.

If he'd made a joke like, "Why do women have boobs" maybe, but not what he said.

Yeah... after all, men can wear skirts, too.

Killebrew 07-07-2003 08:51 PM

I hate anything remotely PC as much as the next total Goombah but I have to admit Timothy Knudsen did disturb my sensibilities with his careless tongue when he went on about the female body and so forth. The part that offended me most was the fact he did not mention whether the woman was married or not, or whether she had already accepted Christ as her personal savior before wearing the cautiously revealing (but yet not revealing) article of clothing. I'm not saying this Knudsen guy should be fired or anything, I just believe he should have practised horse sense before opening his big yapper. It's one thing to believe in free speech, but quite another to believe in free garbage. Some things are just better left unsaid, it seems to me.

ISiddiqui 07-07-2003 08:52 PM

It isn't sexual harassment... at least under the law. If their policy is different it might be, but I can't imagine one comment is enough to cause serious damage to this guy.

Blackadar 07-07-2003 09:02 PM

Stupidity is not a crime.

Good thing, too. :)

The only problem could be what his history is. If he had a known history of making indecent commetns to the workers and maybe directed that comment toward one in particular. Then it could be seen as harrassment. Just playing devil's advocate.

Case in point: An old boss of mine should have been fired for sexual harrassment several times over. To the point of him saying to the secretary how he wants to make love to her, and other very detailed comments, right in front of half of the department. She never did anything because she was afraid to cause problems. Let's say he made the remark about the skirts in a meeting and obviously directed it at her, then there could be a case made that it could fit harrassment.

But to come out and make a blanket sexual harrassment statement about the remakr when there is no background known is just crying wolf. To borrow another's comments "wah wah wah" (comments originally misconstrued, or at least that's the arguement I'm told, due to that person's recent attitude on the board and other remarks made towards the threads originator elsewhere on thie board).

mckerney 07-07-2003 10:28 PM

"Mr. Griffin, I represent one of your co-workers, Sara Bennett, she's sueing you and the company for sexual harrassment."
"Sara...Sara...I don't, wait, is she the one we video taped taking a dump?

Why, what happened?"

cuervo72 07-08-2003 07:19 AM

It's lewd, lascivious, salacious, outrageous!

oykib 07-08-2003 07:42 AM

I'm deeply offended

Why does a woman have to wear a skirt that's long enough to cover the subject?!

andy m 07-08-2003 09:27 AM

both the joker and the offended should be reprimanded for being fuckwits. it's a shit joke, but it's not offensive.

Fritz 07-08-2003 09:32 AM

Andy - That "shit joke" is fairly common public speaking and writing advice.

Abe Sargent 07-08-2003 10:35 AM

I didn't know about it being common advice, but now that I do, I feel even more strongly that women like that Gault chick are in need of serious deep dicking.

So you are removing yourself from the list of those that could help her at all, correct?

Abe Sargent 07-08-2003 01:23 PM

I'll help her. She can call for some Anxiety lovin' anytime. Even if she's ugly. The world needs her to calm down. So, for the world, I am willing to provide deep dicking to Ms. Gault Something.

Such a sacrifice.

RendeR 07-08-2003 01:35 PM

Heh, umm...nevermind, that one obviously went over your head *wink*

I'm sure you could help her a "little"

All right, he totally lost me after he implied a skirt is best when it actually covers something.

Yeah, I know... but it doesn't seem like there is a history. It would have been unearthed in the article, I'd imagine.
