OT: British Open

Anybody psyched for this?

I know I am. Should be a great championship. I get the feeling that a no-name could come out and win, and probably will be in contention, but a real player will emerge successful.

My darkhorse pick (or should that be darkhourse), though, is Monty. Sergio + Tiger in the same group is pretty neat too.

Can't wait to see the first group off the first tee, in only a few hours...

Go Mike Weir :)

Go Jerry Kelly!

There always seems to be at least one "no name" (at least to us in the States) that contends. Fredrik Jacobson has been playing well, and introduced himself to this side of the pond with a strong showing in the U.S. Open after two wins in Europe. Obviously, Woods and Els are the favorites, but I would still look at guys like Jim Furyk, Nick Price, and Justin Leonard. I think Mickelson will surprise (he does not have a good history in the Open) and may contend.

So much for Jerry Kelly. Dead Last.

Question: Now Tiger teed off at about 4:00AM here on the East Coast, was ESPN on with coverage then? I've got a feeling they weren't and that is a bit surprising..

..You have to get those Bassmasters 2001 Challenge re-runs in though..

Ksyrup 07-17-2003 10:14 AM

They were going to cover it, but Tiger's first tee shot knocked the power out of ESPN's truck.

henry296 07-17-2003 10:30 AM

Actually the coverage is on TNT not ESPN this year. I don't think they showed his first shot which was never found.

No chance for Monty either as he withdrew.

Can't see that Otto guy shooting par tomorrow with the conditions he'll be facing. Jakobson looks really, really good out there. Westwood played pretty well also.

At this point, though, with scores being this high, it's impossible to put out an early favorite. Being in the lead at this point means nothing. This seems very reminiscent of Carnoustie, to me, bordering on unfair (though the players don't seem to be to upset about this course setup). But when scores are high like this, you can come out of nowhere with one good round. Paul Lawrie started his final round +10, finished +6, and won, so anything can happen in this tourney.

Good thing. No golfer have I ever known can get his panties in a knot as much as Monty's.

As usual, I am rooting for the golfer not named Tiger Woods to win (but I kinda doubt it).

Both my wife and I can never forget that round. It truly was the most incredible round/finish I have ever seen.

I'm hoping for Mickelson. I always root for him in the majors. He is -1 after 12 holes. The leader is at -3. The British Open always seems to be the toughest, with the deep bunkers and the weather.

I know Jim Rome is going to have fun with Monty's withdrawal. I can hear him already. "Monty Doubtfire opens the hotel door, looks at the sky, takes a tumble and he's done. Well done, Monty Doubtfire."

Yeah, lookin' good! I didn't say he was a favorite, I just wanted the local guy to do well. Oh well. The biggest surprise to me so far is Els at +5 after 13.

I just saw that my favorite golfer of all time, Greg Norman, is tied for 2nd. That is amazing considering his back problems.
