Had Some Low-Thought Time, And My Mind Went On An Idiotic Thought Binger...

I'll bet that title gets people to check this thread out. Of course, I doubt the subject matter lives up to its promise. :)

I was just letting my mind wander, and it occurred to me to wonder about how we would call each other by name at one of those FOFC conventions that are brought up every couple months.

I was thinking that if there was a massive group of us (where we would all be required to learn a whole bunch of actual first names), most of us wouldn't bother except for a small few, and would simply use our online names.

For instance, my guess is that even after saying my name is Matt, I would get a lot more "Chief" than "Matt" from a group of a hundred of you. :)

I was also thinking that even though I know SkyDog's name is Ben, let's say I ran into him by surprise and recognzied him, my first instinct would definitely be to say "SkyDog!" and not "Ben". It might not even occur to me to call him by "Ben" at all, in fact, if I was really surprised.

Then I was imagining a group of us giving in to the human response to familiarity at such a convention, once again, let's say a hundred of us. And we wouldn't even think about someone calling us by our online names, we would just respond. Half the fun would be seeing how many people would actually try to pronounce Anhrydeddu (I think I would say "An-rid=u" personally), or who would shorten it to just Annie or of course revert to Buccaneer or some form thereof. I'll bet few would actually call him Steve, his real name.

Just some of the weird thoughts going through a bored Chief Rum's mind.

CR

MikeVic 07-21-2003 06:47 PM

Umm.. well, since my real name is Mike.. I think people would actually call me "Mike," a shortened version of "MikeVic." :D

But I see what you mean. When I refer to someone in IRC when I'm talking to my "real-life" friends, I call them by their IRC name, and not by their real name..

korme 07-21-2003 06:51 PM

The only guy i would call by his first name is the who i actually refer to as his first name - Steve (Anrhydeddu/Bucc).. everyone else I guess would be called mckerney or sterling ice, or Marmel..

Some names that would make me think about pronouncing:
WSUCougar- I guess it'd be too annoying to say W-S-U-Cougar, so I'd probably just call him Cougar or Coug.
cthomer5000- I always pronounce it c-tommer. But that probably isn't correct.

I also think it'd be weird to see everyone. For all the people who I don't know what they look like, I have a mental image of what they look like. Then again, for the people who posted a picture in the 'whattya look like' thread, whenever they post I always see their face, how weird that seems (especially Pompy Tudors, ABC, FrogMan, and Coffee Warlord).

Good discussion, Chief. Or Chief Rum? Or Chief Running Mouth? Or Matt? Or Mr. Kieta??

So many choices, how would I decide? :)

Ben E Lou 07-21-2003 06:58 PM

I've hung out with Brian (GrantDawg) on a few occassions now. I think he still calls me "SkyDog" when he first sees me.

If it had ever occurred to me that this message board would become the community that it has, I would have used "Ben E Lou" as my nickname rather than "SkyDog" without question, as that is what most people have called me since my freshman year in high school. Of course, I can't switch now, because I can't have Hell Atlantic accusing me of trying to pimp my CD. ;)

sabotai 07-21-2003 06:59 PM

"I would get a lot more "Chief" than "Matt" from a group of a hundred of you. "

I personally will call you Rummy Rum Rum.

SackAttack 07-21-2003 07:00 PM

Yeah, I actually ran into that on a smaller scale when I attended E3. You see, the Gamenikki staff isn't concentrated in any one part of the country the way, say, GameSpy was.

So we've got a writer from St. Louis, one from rural Georgia somewhere, one from Nebraska, myself in California, and one in New York, and those are just the ones that I know of for certain.

So three of us got together for E3 (the others were either broke or underage), and the ones from Georgia/Missouri referred to each other by the online personas they had attached to themselves.

Me? I was simply 'Josh'.

Odd how that worked.

Josh

korme 07-21-2003 07:06 PM

They probably felt weird calling you Sack.

Anrhydeddu 07-21-2003 07:18 PM

I actually would try and call everyone by their real first name as I do in PM and emails. It seems more respectful that. The only exception would be Fritz. He would always be Fritz to me.

Kodos 07-21-2003 07:18 PM

I'm guessing most folks have no idea what my real name is. :) Probably some FMLers know.

illinifan999 07-21-2003 07:21 PM

I thought it was Kodos. :P

korme 07-21-2003 07:21 PM

Chris isn't it?

illinifan999 07-21-2003 07:25 PM

If it's not Kodos I'm gonna have a mental breakdown.

Anrhydeddu 07-21-2003 07:26 PM

It seems that half of the people on this board is named Chris. When in doubt, that would be a good guess.

Well, it's my middle name too

Airhog 07-21-2003 08:08 PM

Most of my friends do call me hogg. So it wouldnt be a big stretch.

kcchief19 07-21-2003 08:16 PM

From one Matt to another Chief, I would refer to as the name that goes through my head everytime I see your name: Pac-10 Lap Dog. :) j/k

Actually, Rummy, your name always makes me pause when I see it, because I wonder if someone is referring to me. Most people refer to me as either kcchief or kc, but I get a chief everyonce in a while.

thanks to your own "what does your nickname mean?" thread, you now know that your pronunciation is perfectly acceptable. It can truly be C - T - Homer or C-tommer. They're both legit.

Vince 07-21-2003 08:43 PM

I don't think people would have a problem differentiating me and my nickname :)

Draft Dodger 07-21-2003 08:44 PM

coincidentally, one of the guys I work with has the last name of Dodge - everyone (myself included) calls him Dodger. If someone called me that, I'd wonder why they were talking about him.

I have the additional confusion of having a work nickname (DDC) - it's used almost exclusively there (even by my wife), very few people use my real name.

meanwhile, to my friends I'm Dave, and to my family...David (my preference is David, not Dave).

so, call me anything, I guess - I'll adjust.

But I am Fritz. My birth name is Frederick, and Fritz is a short form of Frederick.

CAsterling 07-21-2003 09:16 PM

Strangely enough I have a real first name, but not many people use it (its actually Paul), but to most my colleagues I tend to be refered to as 'The Englishman' or if they want to irritate me 'The Australian' and if they are really trying to piss me off 'Frenchie'

Back in good old England my friends tend to use my real name - its hard to shorten Paul ;)

ISiddiqui 07-21-2003 09:31 PM

I wonder if y'all would call me 'ISiddiqui' or Imran as is my first name ;). I know Anrhydeddu/Steve calls me Imran, but he has insider information from another board ;).

Heh. I pronounce it "K'thome-er" as in Cthulhu. Only other word where I know how to pronounce the "Cth" as "Kith" but without the vowel sound.

bbor 07-21-2003 09:45 PM

I'll give a buck in your name to the people fund if you can figure out my name.

Maple Leafs 07-21-2003 09:48 PM

This seems like as good a place as any to vent about my FOFC pet peeve: people who call me "Maple". If you feel the need to abbreviate "Maple Leafs", it's "Leafs", you American morons.* Not "Maple". Would you call the Red Sox the "Reds"?

*"American moron": a Canadian phrase meaning "cherished friend".

vtbub 07-21-2003 09:52 PM

Nobody pronounces my last name right anyway, bub is fine.

I'm just thankful I didn't go with my alternate FOFC Name Choice, DildoBoy. :D

Anrhydeddu 07-21-2003 10:15 PM

Fritz, I did not know that. So is your full name Fred Buff?

Shorty, you do know that we also have a funny mental image that pops up whenever you post, right? ;)

To keep on with the discussion, I exchange regularly via email with Rodney aka Ardent Enthusiast and we exchange using our real name, same with HornedFrog, before he disappeared. I tend to do that, when I get to exchange on a more personal level with anybody, I mean kind of stop using the nickname and get on a more personal level...

I thought you were Donald Rumsfeld in disguise, so I was going to call you Republican Whore;)

Seriously, I'd think it mostly be Skydog or Chief Rum or whatever. It'd just be weird saying anything else.

Well, seeing as how my name is Kyle, the first guy you think of is not MrBug708 is it?

Radii 07-22-2003 12:28 AM

I actually answer to radii. The guys I play poker with IRL, about half of them I knew in person first, about half of them saw me posting on a newsgroup at tech going by the handle radii. Being the computer geeks that we are, many of us refer to each other by our online handles.

What's worse, is that I was goofing around with everquest and the character I ended up playing to the max level was a female character. So to a small few number of people, I will answer IRL to my female Everquest Character's name :P I probably shouldn't tell many people that though huh?

Axxon 07-22-2003 02:13 AM

I'd find it hard to put real names to the nicks IMHO but I'd do it if they felt it a sign of respect. Me, I don't really like my given name and would gladly answer to Axxon. It has far more personal meaning to me ( as it relates to things I've done and was taken as a choice by me ) than the name my parents threw on me when I wasn't even born yet.

Don't get me wrong, I'm honored to be named after the two relatives that I was named after; they're two of the finest people I've ever had the pleasure of meeting but they had crappy names. :)

I could have had it worse though. I was named Edward after my grandfather but that is the americanized version of his name. I could have just as easily been an Heriberto. I think I'll stick with Axxon. ;)

Met a "Dude" once. Forget what his real name was. He was from Canada and looked like Charlie Sheen.

I have no problem answering to Cuervo, it's a play on my last name and was my nickname in college.

No, you just inspired me to go on an idiotic thought binger.

SplitPersonality1 07-22-2003 10:00 AM

I know for a fact that I would probably use most folks screennames.

SkyDog might become Ben, but Craptacular would have to be called Crappy.

On a semi-related note. Do you guys share some of the board threads with your wives/significant others. If you do, do they find it odd to be talking about Kodos, Marmel, Crappy, SkyDog, Shorty etc.?

My wife thinks it's fairly normal since a lot of my friends that I've known since high school still use nicknames most of the time. It's been nearly 20 years and I still talk to "Stump-Jumper", "Chauncey", "Coma-boy", "Noj" & "Lurch"

Sometimes I'll talk about funny or interesting threads, but usually I'll just say something like "someone on the football board posted ...". This is the only forum I visit on the net, so she knows what I'm talking about even if I'm really vague.

However, SkyDog gets special treatment ... he's "that guy from the football board whose CD we have". :D
