Pirates of the Caribbean
 

I just saw this movie the other night. Johnny Depp has always been one of my favorite actors, and his performance in this movie was just brilliant.

Other than some slow moving parts (which should have been cleaned up with editing) this was a good, clean, fun summer movie. Great story, great characters, some incredible swash-buckling scenes, and pretty neat effects.

Any other thoughts on the movie?

I read the buckles on that swash were props. They used velcro fasteners.

Excellent film. I think some were skeptical given the last movie based on a Disney attraction - "The Country Bears." But Pirates is the perfect attraction for a movie.

Pirates is one of this summer's best movies. Disney already is planning a sequel.

Disney also has high hopes for its next attraction-based flick ... "The Haunted Mansion." If they do it right, it could be a winner.

Took the family to see this Saturday. Really good movie. I was expecting it to be scarier, but liked it anyways.

Ugh, saw the preview for that and it looks like another cheesy Eddie Murphy family comedy. Blech...

Agreed Jeeber D, looks terrible.

Silver Owl, being a Disney movie, but PG-13 I thought it was just about right.

Now that's what I'm talking about. Saw a preview for "The Alamo" last night when I went to see "Open Range" (which, by the way, was a very good flick) and it looks great. Can't wait to see Billy Bob as Davey Crockett...

The Alamo

This film is going to be awesome, which is probably why Disney is hedging its bets putting it out in the heart of Oscar season.

Apparently it is going to be a gem and Disney has spared no expense in its production. My understanding is Disney has Texas historians help out and I believe the director himself is a Texas.

BTW, Ron Howard was originally supposed to direct. He got another Western instead.

Got my Entertainment Weekly in and there looks to be several good movies coming out for Oscar season.

I saw the preview for the Alamo when I went to see Open Range.

I just hope it goes more the action-adventure route than the epic feel I was getting from the preview. Everytime I hear "Epic" music with the dramatic shots of the stars, I get a little hesitant.

I've never really liked Johnny Depp but he was great in this movie. It was interesting to hear his thoughts on the character in an interview that he did. He said that he considered pirates to be the rockstars of their time so he based the character of Jack Sparrow on Keith Richards.

After Eddie Murphy Raw in the 80s did anyone EVER think this phrase could possibly be said.

Might as well have said "Just another David Dukes NAACP Fundraiser in Lousiana..."

Which version of EW did you get. I looked through this years movies and sae lots and lots of crapola.

I was just discussing the state of Hollywood witha co-worker of mine and we both agreed that there is not much to see in this upcoming "Oscar" season.

Besides "Alamo", which I agree with you BTW as one of the few bright spots in a rather dismal season, which movies are you looking forward too. Maybe I missed something. Said co-worker looked at the magazine before me and the pages were stuck together a bit.

Disney and Pixar have that other movie coming out next year, they had a very short preview for it before Finding Nemo. It was called Captain Incredible or something like that??

I'm pretty excited about "Once Upon A Time In Mexico", but I'm one of the few people who thought Desperado (as well as El Mariachi) was incredibly enjoyable. I hear Depp steals plenty of scenes in "Mexico".

If Billy Bob surrenders to Santa Anna, there will be hell to pay.

Of course now whenever I see Billy Bob, I'll typecast him as Davy Crockett and start singing the tune. :D

Never going to happen - just like all the vietnam movies and such greats as 'Pearl Harbour', I'm sure this film too will re-write history and the Mexicans will lose......or at worst the Alamo will be a draw and the moral victory will be America's - with David Crocket and Jim Bowie surviving for the sequel :confused:

Reality will never even enter the writers thoughts ;)

Anyways, back on topic, I was really suprised by Pirates. I didn't expect too much and it was the most fun I've had all summer- it was just a fun movie. And, yes, Johnny Depp was downright amazing. Too bad it's not the type of role they give Oscars for.

I don't think many expected too much after "The Country Bears" fiasco.

I really enjoyed Pirates of the Caribbean too. It was much more of an epic movie than I had imagined it would be. Johnny Depp, as others have mentioned, was outstanding; he completely shattered the stereotype of "pirate".

There were a couple of places that lifted one eyebrow, though. Withoug spoiling it, I thought the ending went way outside the premise built up throughout the movie.

Although I think Desperado was a terrible movie... I've still got a woody from the mental image of Salma Hayek!

I totally agree with you on this. In the end, just about every character took a 180 degree turn from how they were portrayed through the previous two hours.

It's a Disney movie and it was a Disney ending.

I loved Pirates, thought it was the best movie I'd seen in a long time. The guys doing the special effects clearly had a ton of fun, and I thought they did a great job stringing out the mystery, feeding it to you a piece at a time. I wasn't that bothered by the ending; the characters were changing throughout the film, and an experience like that is bound to change your outlook on life.

I can't believe no one has used this thread to whip out their letter to Penthouse about Keira Knightley. That young lady was easy on the eyes.

Well, she just turned 18. Give 'em time. Besides Penthouse is bankrupt.

Keira Knightley was drop dead gorgeous in the movie, she was worth the admission alone. She's almost a Natalie Portman clone...she was actually the one who played her double in the first Star Wars movie.

Pirates was an excellent movie, you have to give Disney props for the way the handled it. I wasn't as big on Depp's performance as most people were though his performance was a bit more 'flamboyant' than it need to be I think. But it's nice to see a little bit different acting too, he broke out of the pirate stereotype nice. Rockstar is an excellent analogy for how he played the role.
